Shinigami are individuals that reviews the lives of those that are about to die. Shinigami are generally seen in sharp suits, basic at the beginning of their career. They are suited with glasses that allow them to view the cinematic records of a person's life (see the wiki if you are confused) and each are equipped with a unique, inconspicuous Death Scythe that allows them to reap souls. While Shinigami are generally hardworking beings that dutifully fulfill their soul reaping responsibilities, some have quirks of their own and tend to adopt side-missions in the human world (ex: Ronald attending parties, Grell & Madam Red as Jack the Ripper). However, due to more people becoming aware of the Shinigami's existence, the Shinigami Offices started a code in which each Shinigami takes the disguise of a human occupation and identifies each other according to an Arcana codename (ex: Kiel is known to his fellow Shinigami-in-disguise as 'The Fool'). In YML, Shinigami are expected to likewise record brief summaries of their missions in the Shinigami Offices. In return, their records will be used in the main plot! Excellent work, Shinigami!

FAQs

Q: How old are Shinigami?
A: Shinigami can be as young as in their teens to thousands of years old. However, their appearance doesn't seem to change too drastically, as most of them look quite young.

Q: Can Shinigami identify Demons? What about Dolls?
A: No, Shinigami cannot identify demons unless the Demon reveals himself/herself to the Shinigami. It is difficult for anyone to tell that a Doll is, in fact, not human, because their physiognomy is so lifelike. They may notice that the Doll seems to be a very peculiar human, though.

Q: What kind of missions do Shinigami in YML receive?
A: The Shinigami Offices distribute missions to their personnel. The Shinigami's job is to trail the subject of interest, record their time/method of death, and finally reap them of their souls while simultaneously reviewing their lives. (Please refer to the Shinigami Offices if you have more specific questions/interest.)

Q: Isn't that a lot of writing?
A: Quality over quantity is a prominent proverb. Length isn't as important to us as the relativity of your writing. The more creativity or effort we see in your Shinigami's missions and RPs, the more likely we'll allow you a complete custom costume for your shinigami (corrupt) or shinigami (mentor).

Q: How do Shinigami "disguise" themselves?
A: While in the canon, Grell's disguise was moreso cosmetic, he also adopted the disguise as a butler. In YML, your Shinigami is expected to take on a human occupation due to the Offices' precautionary requirements (these jobs are not restricted to butler) and his Death Scythe should be based off of it to appear inconspicuous in the human world.

Q: Wait, so I get to choose what my Shinigami's Death Scythe is?
A: Yes! Pistolsys will even give you art for it after you complete your first two solos. You may even influence its design a little if you wish! Pistolsys admires effort and creativity. However, the staff would appreciate it if you do a tiny bit of research to see which Death Scythe concepts are already taken to avoid mishaps; each Death Scythe should be unique and unlike any other.

Q: A Shinigaim's job doesn't require them to have a companion. How come stage II requires them to?
A: While a Shinigami isn't required by the Shinigami Office to have a partner to complete their task, your Shinigami's quirks may. Is he a ladies man? Does he do his soul reaping work better in a duo? Does he feel lonely? Shinigami, while they are gods of death, still have very human (and sometimes even idiosyncratic tendencies).

Q: So if a Shinigami reaches Stage III (A) / Shinigami (corrupt) does he/she lose his/her job as a Shinigami?
A: It all depends whether you plan for your shinigami to resign or promote. Hypothetically, if your Shinigami murders/reaps the soul of a human/doll (which still counts as reaping a soul because it has a living, human soul) he or she will be faced with forced resignation in contrary to the canon (William just smashes Grell's face in). However, if you plan for your shinigami companion to be on the death list (to avoid resignation), you must PM the shop mule for a mission RP in which the Offices will send you a letter that permit you to. However, your mission prompt response will need to be stamped by one of the admins to ensure that the aftermath/conduction of it are reasonable. Your shinigami and companion by now must have at least developed a bond of a sort.

Q: My Shinigami won't be aligned with the Shinigami Offices if my Shinigami chooses to kill off his companion that is not on the death list right?
A: That is correct, and you will no longer have to fill out Shinigami logs. However, we expect you to be just as active. Your Death Scythe will be taken from you in return, as you no longer work for the Offices. However, at this time, you are allowed to influence the designs for your "new" weapon that has the same properties as a Death Scythe sans that it cannot reap souls nor view cinematic records but it cannot be cut by another Death Scythe (the staff likes to call it an Anti-Scythe). Anti-Scythes are featured in the canon but are spoilers if further explained. Your Anti-Scythe can be influenced with your ideas so long as you PM the mule with your concepts. BUUUUT you must first write up an RP in which your Shinigami changes his human occupation (or keeps it, it's up to you). The occupation should influence his Anti-Scythe in some way just like it did with his old Death Scythe. However, he can never gain a companion again.

Q: What about his faction? He left the Offices right?
A: At this time, your Shinigami can choose to serve another faction so long as the reasoning you offer in your RPs explain his motives.

Q: So if my Shinigami kills his companion on the Death list, he is eligible to become a Shinigami (mentor)?
A: Correct. The Offices are impressed that he severed such cloes bonds with his job at the highest priority. While your Shinigami (mentor) cannot gain a Death Scythe upgrade/redesign, he can gain a sidekick Shinigami that you are allowed to pair him up with after you've won one from a sale.

Q: How does my sidekick Shinigami become reach Shinigami (*enlightened)?
A: If your sidekick Shinigami's learning progress from his superior is comprehensive to us, he can be promoted to Shinigami (*enlightened), which, too, like Shinigami (mentor), is much more refined and fancy. Your Shinigami sidekick will receive his custom-drawn Death Scythe art after completing two solos as well).

Q: If you're tenaciously sticking to the timeline, how come the Burschton brothers sport sunglasses? This is Victorian England!
A: As a matter of fact tinted glasses were available by the 18th century. However, the Burschton brothers' eyeglasses are not called "sunglasses" ICly. They are special, moderated Shinigami spectacles that allow them to view specific major events of a person's life in the cinematic records because their work demands efficiency and lucid transition. Not only do they have to act as the Shinigami postal service but Grim Reapers as well.
