WHATABOTH. ➔ As a young demon, Anthem is, for all intents and purposes, a trickster. Often considered the life of the party and the clown of the crowd, he tends to divert the majority DERPISH.of his focus and energy toward devising ways to spice up the night. Practical jokes are his specialty, and he delights in the act of providing some amusement for others at the DERPISH.expense of some unfortunate individual. Though his pranks are never personal in nature (he picks his victims at random, and although acquaintances are rarely short of DERPISH.complaints, strangers could just as easily fall prey to Anthem’s wicked sense of humor), there are times when they can stir up some animosity toward himself or Valka. That DERPISH.victims of his pranks could take offense is a fact that rarely seems to occur to him, however, and he often forgets his jokes as quickly and easily as he thinks of them.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Although a lover of practical jokes, being pranked in return can and will bruise Anthem’s ego. He is a prideful being, determined to hold his head high no matter where he DERPISH.goes. Anything that prevents him from doing so automatically becomes an obstacle that he must overcome at any cost. He despises failure and will do anything to uphold his DERPISH.“reputation,” often overlooking his duties or responsibilities in favor of making himself look good.
WHATABOTH. ➔ As much as he cares about the image he projects (which, in Anthem’s mind, tends to involve the words rugged and powerful, but whether either applies is somewhat DERPISH.more… open for debate), he cares about the images that others project toward him. True to his more impulsive nature, he tends to make judgments quickly; once an opinion DERPISH.has been formed, it tends to be a strong one and difficult to change, no matter who or what it concerns.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Jealousy and loyalty go hand in hand when it comes to Anthem, whose devotion to Valka is undeniable (should anyone insinuate otherwise, he will fly into a rage, DERPISH.insulted by the idea that anyone could accuse him of disloyalty). There is nothing that Anthem would not do if his master were to ask, but that loyalty can also manifest itself as DERPISH.jealousy. Anyone attempting to get too close to Valka will first have to go through Anthem, whose desire to protect his master as well as to keep Valka near at hand often mean DERPISH.he will fight anyone tooth and nail for his master’s company.
WHATABOTH. ➔ The fire that fuels this jealousy can also manifest as aggression toward other demons, or even just toward other humans in general, and represents a destructive force DERPISH.inside the demon that must be controlled. Any tension left to build within Anthem can and will eventually explode in a burst of violence toward some poor creature, and God be DERPISH.with whoever has to take the brunt of his frustrations. With Anthem, “control” involves letting loose all his energy before it has the chance to build and become malevolent (by DERPISH.the time he gets frustrated, it is usually too late to stop him), which in turn involves movement, almost constant movement throughout the day. Exercise, both physical and DERPISH.mental, is the ideal outlet for his tension, and he is always happiest when he can end the day completely worn out. His spirited, active nature allows him to partake with ease in DERPISH.lengthy activities requiring physical effort, and there is nothing he loves more than being outside and simply moving.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Under ideal circumstances, Anthem can be a stable, steady-going companion but it must always be noted that it takes little to upset that balance and send him spiraling DERPISH.toward aggression and destruction.
DERP.history
WHATABOTH. ➔ Anthem has served as Valka’s butler for five years. His responsibilities are much like those of an older brother’s, and he does anything and everything necessary to DERPISH.ensure that no harm befalls his master. Intimidating Valka’s foul landlady, sharing Valka’s partial duties as errand boy, aiding his development as an apprentice, and observing DERPISH.the Russian murderer all fall under Anthem’s usual activities.

WHATABOTH. ➔ Valka is a taciturn young man whose desire to be alone greatly exceeds his desire for company. There is little that he wishes to say to outsiders, and even less that he DERPISH.wishes to hear from them. There are few people who know or understand him and those few were allowed into his life with reluctance; their acquaintance is neither appreciated DERPISH.nor gratifying. Most people, he treats with indifference and slight suspicion, as if they might at any minute attack and take from him everything of value.
WHATABOTH. ➔ He tends to apply generalizations with ease, rarely taking the time to recognize others as individuals. His limited life experience has yet to steer him on any other course, DERPISH.and what he has seen so far of people seems to indicate that they are ruthless and avaricious and not to be trusted. He considers men brutal and violent, while women appear to DERPISH.be frail and intent on taking advantage of everybody else. Children seem consistently juvenile and jealous and eager to please all the wrong people.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Valka takes pride in knowing that he refuses to conform to such shallow behaviors, and in this sense, he is something of a maverick. Social and political conventions DERPISH.mean nothing to him; pretending otherwise means even less, and should he feel as though something has rubbed him the wrong way, he might even intentionally rebel against DERPISH.the norm in an act of defiance. He embraces his Russian heritage with fervor, and English rules and customs mean nothing to him, nothing to the boy from so far out east.
WHATABOTH. ➔ All his life, Valka has felt different from the others, and he clings to that difference with the same tenacity as he clings to everything else. He has the same single- DERPISH.mindedness and obstinacy as a bulldog, and like a bulldog, he will latch onto some idea or theory and refuse to let go. Personal welfare, as well as everything else that could DERPISH.possibly concern him or anyone else, falls to the wayside in the wake of this doggedness, and he can even grow obsessive when he enters such a phase.

WHATABOTH. ➔ The story of Valka’s family began deep in the heart of the Russian Empire, where his father was a relative higher-up involved in the workings of a corrupt militia that DERPISH.tormented the small town in which they resided. The father was one of the major sources of information for the militia, and earned what was considered a decent living from his DERPISH.activities. He desired nothing but to provide for his wife and unborn child, but their way of living was disrupted when he was caught selling information to government workers in DERPISH.the area. Enraged by betrayal, the head of the militia put a hefty price of the father’s head and demanded that the father be brought to him dead. Knowing the injustices that DERPISH.the militia men would commit on his wife should they find her, the father decided there was no other way but to flee.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Their destination was England. It was as far away a place as the father could imagine, and he thought that perhaps there would be a way to make an honest living in a DERPISH.place like London, a city of which he had heard many things but had never before seen. The journey would be arduous, would perhaps even rob them of the spirit to continue, DERPISH.but for the sake of their child, they had to endure.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Caught in the dregs of what had been a merciless winter plagued by blizzards and unstable temperatures, the couple travelled for three months. Their baby was born just DERPISH.before they crossed out of Russia – he would be the last true, Russian-born son of their bloodline – and to give him the strength to endure the ordeal that lay before him, they DERPISH.named him Valka: strong.
WHATABOTH. ➔ By the time the family reached London, the mother had fallen ill. Her sickness was exacerbated by the poor living conditions that greeted them as part of the working DERPISH.class. Unable to properly care for the child, she was forced to rent a room in an already-crowded house for the meager help neighbors could provide. The father found himself a DERPISH.job as an assistant for an eccentric student of the paranormal. The term assistant was… loosely defined; the job required the father to work long hours toting books and bags DERPISH.and cleaning and cooking and finishing everything the employer was too indolent to complete on his own.
WHATABOTH. ➔ It was no way to live, but at the same time, it was the only way. Valka grew, familiar only with the squalid conditions that surrounded him. He became his mother’s DERPISH.caretaker, often making hot broths to soothe her wicked cough and working as a cleaner around the house. Late into the evening, when his father would return, he would sit DERPISH.beside his mother’s bed and listen to his father tell him fantastical stories of ghosts and demons that haunted the streets, of hail and corruption that terrorized the Russian DERPISH.countryside.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Banned from leaving the house for anything more than short errands, Valka had no friends, and learned everything he knew from his father’s tales. His was a solitary DERPISH.existence at best, with nobody for company but his invalid mother and a landlady who despised him. With this upbringing, he came to understand better than anyone that his DERPISH.family was all that he had, all that he needed to treasure. There was nothing else for him to adore or respect or pine after, simply because there was nothing else that he knew.
WHATABOTH. ➔ When he was nine years old, his mother succumbed to her illness. Without an excuse to stay inside the house during the day, he was forced into the streets during the DERPISH.day by the landlady and allowed to return only at night, when his father returned. To fill up the lonesome days, he found himself a job as an errand boy for a blacksmith that had DERPISH.opened shop several houses down.
WHATABOTH. ➔ When Valka was eleven, his father’s past finally caught up with them. A recent immigrant from Russia, whose involvement with the same militia was unquestionable, found DERPISH.himself in the same part of town as Valka and his father. Remembering the father’s betrayal, the militia man exacted revenge, stabbing the father eleven times in the torso late DERPISH.one night.
WHATABOTH. ➔ Valka, who had developed a habit of silently awaiting his father’s return by the doorway of their home, watched the murder from down the street. In the dark, he could see DERPISH.nothing of the man save the glint of moonlight reflected in his ice gray eyes and the sneer that flickered beneath his thick, twice-broken nose.
WHATABOTH. ➔ In the unbearable darkness that flooded that filthy, poverty-stricken street in London, Valka vowed to have his revenge.
DERP.recent history
WHATABOTH. ➔ In the years that have passed since his father’s murder, Valka has not strayed. His job as errand boy for the blacksmith became a permanent one, and after several DERPISH.more years, the blacksmith recognized his persistence and adopted Valka as a part-time apprentice. With Anthem by his side, he has slowly begun to learn the trade of the DERPISH.blacksmith, which he hopes to master and eventually use as a means to earn a living.
WHATABOTH. ➔ He has not forgotten his father’s death, and watches the murderer from afar. With each passing day, he comes closer to ironing out a concrete plan for revenge, one that DERPISH.he hopes will ensure a maximum amount of suffering for his father’s murderer. |

WHATABOTH. ➔ andrey was sixteen when he became embroiled in the world of corruption. the local militia that had guarded his village was replaced by a generation of younger, less WHATABOTH. moral fighters in that year, and with pressure from his elder brother, andrey signed himself up to be an informant for the militia. in the seven years that he upheld his post, WHATABOTH. he related to the ruthless militiamen information on hundreds of families that allowed the fighters to extort and blackmail. by the time andrey realized what was happening, WHATABOTH. it was too late to back out. instead, he turned toward his status as an informant to earn more money for his family. in doing so, he found himself caught in a deal to sell WHATABOTH. information about the militia to the government. the militia was furious and placed a bounty on andrey's head. to protect himself and his pregnant wife, he made the WHATABOTH. decision to flee in search of a new life.
WHATABOTH. ➔ cause of death was blood loss after eleven knife wounds to his mid-section, administered by a fellow ex-member of the corrupt militia, who wound up in the same slum WHATABOTH. and still held a grudge against andrey for his betrayal.

WHATABOTH. not surprisingly, he chose himself, and in essence sold her to andrey. though initially reluctant, tatyana was eager to leave her father's ***** company, and in time WHATABOTH. found andrey to be more agreeable than her father.
