Welcome to Lotus, a breedables/changing shop where characters from the depths of history come together with ones from the mysterious future, whether to work side-by-side or to collide. These characters are all completely original and roleplay-required. In fact, the shop is based around RP, so please be aware of that before proceeding. Enjoy your stay!

[ 1 ] Obey all Gaia TOS, Rules and Guidelines.

[ 3 ] DO NOT PM JYOTI. Seriously. All queries should be made in this thread. The reason for this is that Jyoti's PM box is always full, and if you need to PM someone in regards to this shop, please PM either Wraith Sian or Shee Sian.
[ 4 ] Before asking a question, please read this front page to make sure it hasn't already been answered.

[ 10 ] If you are unable to fulfill roleplay requirements, your character will be "rehomed" or ICly removed from LOTUS as is seen fit.
[ 11 ] Inactivity for two months at LOTUS (ie posting in the shop, solo RPs, PRPs/ORPs) will get you a reminder. 6 months no activity gets your character NPCed/taken from you and another reminder sent. Two months after that if we still haven't heard from you your character will be re-homed or used for plot purposes later at Jyoti's discretion.

How does a character end up at LOTUS? How does recruitment work?

A character can either formally be recruited into LOTUS by being approached by a LOTUS representative, or they can choose to seek out LOTUS and ask to join. If your character asks around about LOTUS, LOTUS would find them because LOTUS is desperate to recruit more members. A character cannot accidentally end up at LOTUS because its so secluded.

There is no formal recruitment RP that needs to be completed. How a character got to LOTUS is part of their backstory and you will be responsible for determining how it happened.

[ the golden age ]

When time broke, amidst the chaos no one noticed the returning whispers of a story long forgotten. It was said that there was once an old peoples, amongst whom the gods walked. They were the shining, golden ones, blessed with the gifts of the gods.

The shining ones one day discovered invention. They were fascinated by the notion of continuous revelation, and the gods became jealous. A rift developed between them, and the shining ones were lost to their devices, while the gods withdrew into their anger. The gods, in their rage, reclaimed their gifts and scattered their shining ones across the newly formed world.

The golden ones became dull. Some were driven to develop their devices. Some felt regret and turned to worship their gods. Slowly, memories of the golden age faded.

[ innovation ]

They were moving steadfastly towards harnessing whatever power they could. Zenit had united from a common drive towards innovation, and then one day, they had harnessed all the tangible energies they could. So they turned to the intangible. It was discovered that time was unusually concentrated deep in the soil of an unimportant little village in the Amazon jungle, and they set out to uncover and contain it. The inhabitants resisted, decrying the uprooting of the musty old temple that stood upon the concentration. They were easily contained. Pulling out time took little time itself, and it could easily be seen that this was a power beyond anything that had come before it. No one noticed time's warnings. No one realized that other such concentrations existed, inseparably intertwined and perfectly balanced to force the linearity of time. They only realized time had been bound into long-ago petrified crystal when everything shattered.

[ the new world order ]

There was only one constant when time broke-- the remnants of crystal that drifted into the sky, released from their meticulous bonds. Time now ran rampant, plunging the world into chaos. Timelines were interspersed, the ancient mingling with the modern and confusion abounding, and people began to forget, the furor of time stealing their memories. Fear closed borders as nations struggled to stabilize and became wary of anyone but themselves.

And then hope emerged. From Rome came word that the god of time had a solution. The Church of Aeturna arose around him and swore to repair the damage the heretic Zenit had wrought. Aeturna drew their followers, lured by the promise of stability and the prevention of the loss of their memories. The Roman Empire was reborn, with Janus, god of time, at its helm.

The lotus blossom is renowned for unfurling its pristine white petals in the middle of muddy waters. Much like its namesake, the mysterious LOTUS organization arose from the confusion of broken time and bickering nations. No one really knows their purpose or the nature of their apparent conflict with Aeturna, and some believe they are simply a construction of fanciful minds. For who would oppose a god promising to lead humanity into a new world?

But gods have their secrets. To rebind time to crystal requires great power, perhaps more than even a god possesses. And a new world implies the death of the old one…

LOTUS takes place in a world where time has 'broken'. This means that time is no longer linear, and it is as if all time periods that exist in the past, present and future are all occurring at the same time. There are little 'pockets' of different time periods that exist everywhere. To deal with this, most countries have decided to undergo rigorous cultural homogeneity campaigns, creating a national language, religion and culture that everyone must follow, in order to unify their people, promote nationalism and provide their nation with some semblance of stability. The world is in a state of global anarchy, where there are no rules of conduct for countries to follow, and tensions are running high with nations poised to go to war at any moment. Some nations have already been torn apart by strife, and others newly created.

[ aeturna ]

The Church of Aeturna was founded when the God of Time revealed himself to the High Augur and promised salvation for humanity. Based in Rome, Aeturna has gained a large following and is continuing to grow. The central tenet of the church is worship of Janus, the god of time, who has promised to right the disruption of time. Aeturna is particularly vigilant against Zenit and regards them as heretics.

[ zenit ]

Zenit is highly intelligent, highly driven and obsessed with innovation and technological discovery. The group attracts those that strive to push possibilities beyond their limits; it was Zenit who postulated that time could be used as a source of energy and who lead the charge to extract time. Zenit's main administration is anchored in the reborn state of Akkadia. The group is quite a bit older in origin than it appears; Zenit itself does not recall its inception, but are more concerned with the present than the past.

[ lotus ]

No one knows very much about Lotus. It does not appear to be a large organization, and its goals are unclear. Aeturna seems to have some sort of interest in Lotus, but refuses to provide more information on the matter. There are a handful of people who are reported to be emissaries of Lotus, and recently they have been recruiting. Those few who are aware of the nature of Lotus know of an ancient temple situated in a tranquil valley nestled deep within the Great Himalayan mountains. The building is secluded and nearly inaccessible; ancient trails are etched into the landscape, reaching across the mountain passes, however, they are so old few dare to use them. LOTUS only experiences two seasons: winter and summer. During the long, winter months, there is heavy snowfall and the landscape is covered in a dazzling blanket of pure white snow. The summers are cool and allows for the thawing of the nearby stream, small and crystal-clear. Blue poppies grow abundantly around the building, creeping up its sides and adding a soft touch of colour to the smooth white stone, sparsely adorned with intricate carvings.

Lotus has recently been recruiting new members, and it appears they are starting to make their move. Regional Lotus Representatives are available for interview for anyone wishing to join the organization.

Wraith Sian
A young Indian man in his mid-twenties who is the head of the LOTUS organization. He is responsible for much of the administration involved and spends much of his time in the compound's library. It appears that Wraith Sian is not his real name, and it is unknown why he chose to change it. In fact, very little is known about the man. He has a younger sister, Shee Sian, also involved with LOTUS. Wraith has something different about him-- whereas most people of Indian descent have dark, almost black eyes, Wraith's are a bright, piercing blue that seem to get a fire in them when he is especially determined or angry. He is overall a curt, somber man with a quick temper, dressing in clothing that is only somewhat recognizable as Indian.



























Shee Sian
The younger sister of Wraith Sian, Shee is almost his polar opposite. A young woman in her mid-twenties, she spends most of her time outside the LOTUS building, tending to flowers and feeding the birds that nest around the compound. She has somehow fallen into the position of the organization's de facto doctor. Although she has the same piercing blue eyes as her brother, her personality is much brighter and cheerful, almost excessively so. She has been known to have her lapses into silence and withdrawal, seemingly provoked by nothing in particular. Her attire shares much of the strange but traditional Indian quality of her brother's.

[ new recruit ]

All LOTUS members begin as new recruits into the league. They do not have a specific job or specialty as of yet. This is the lowest rank. It gives new members a chance to get comfortable at LOTUS. As a new recruit, you are restricted to the LOTUS base and to your home country. After completing a mission in a certain country, you are granted access to that country.
Example mission: aid clean-up and rescue efforts after a natural disaster.

[ level one ]

After passing the aptitude test, you choose a specialization track and begin to tailor your skills. Some missions can only be completed by members with certain skills.
Example mission:serve as a bodyguard for a high-ranking official.

[ level two ]

You can now go on higher class missions and are permitted to lead others on missions.
Example mission: investigate and try to debunk a conspiracy that's about to lead to war.

[ elite ]

Being an elite member of Lotus means the ablility to take missions of any class. You are now at the top of Lotus' social heirarchy.
Example mission: One of the Superni has been paying suspicious attention to a given area. Figure out what she's doing and, if necessary, stop her.

Lotus is an RP-heavy shop. This means that if you have a character here, you must RP with them. That is the whole point, really.

LET ME REITERATE. THIS IS A ROLEPLAY HEAVY SHOP.

Failure to meet the minimum RP requirements without good reason will result in your character being taken away, with no refund.

[ rp requirements ]

1. You should participate in one (1) RP every 2 months. A post in your journal, provided the post is complex enough (such as a short story or diary entry) will count towards this total. However, in terms of strict activity requirements, you are required to either RP or post in this thread at least once a month before you will be sent a reminder and have your character taken away.

2. While in a multiplayer RP situation that is set up by Jyoti, there is a forty-eight hour rule in effect. You must post within 48 hours of a reply or risk being minorly powerplayed. More information on this rule (which you should read) can be found here.

3. Most of your RP should be in the form of missions.

All roleplay should take place in the guild. This thread is for all OOC talk.

GUILD

Further, when you make a post in a guild thread, please post an indigo notice of that in this thread. It should indicate which thread you posted in. You can copy-paste the following form if you like:

...though you can certainly just slap your own words down. No, if you're playing with only two people or posting in your own journal, you don't necessarily have to do this. But it's a great way to keep everyone informed about what's going on and to get attention for whatever you're writing, and when there's truly multiplayer gaming in progress, hopefully it will serve to keep anyone from getting left behind.

There are many ways to roleplay in Lotus:

- private RP
- missions
- crystal retrieval

[ journal entries ]

Writing journal entries or posting any piece of writing in your journal helps you develop your character more fully, and is encouraged!

[ private RP ]

This is group roleplay. Group roleplay can be either open or closed, and include as many people as you wish. Please read the rules to see what you can or can't do plot-wise, but this is generally quite open to whatever you can imagine that fits into the setting.

[ missions ]

RP is initiated by taking an available mission. All missions are different and further information will be provided when you take on a mission. Some missions can only be taken if you have reached a certain rank, or if you specialize in a certain area. Missions will be posted in the world map subforum in the guild.

[ crystal retrieval ]

These rare RP events involve all players who wish to participate and can only be initiated by the GMs. These take place when one of the five time crystals has been located. The task of your group will be to retrieve it...even as others try to do the same thing. Completing a set number of retrievals is necessary to advancing your LOTUS rank.

Please note that all roleplay will count towards rank advancement; however, different types of roleplay have different 'exchange rates' and weightings. Please see the Ranking and Advancement thread in the guild for more information on this. Although you are able to 'trade in' all kinds of RP, you should mostly be RPing through missions.

[ character creation rules ]

[ 1 ] Your character may not have magical abilities, may not be a deity and may not be mythological.

The world of LOTUS is largely not a fantasy setting, and characters should not be magical. Characters based around the idea of shamans, fortune tellers, etc. are welcome, however, their 'abilities' must be grounded in reality, not magic.

[ 2 ] You may choose your character's gender, and in most cases you may choose your character's country of origin, although there are often some restrictions.

The 'theme' of your character is the country and time period they come from. To ensure variety in characters, there is often some sort of restriction on which countries may be chosen for a character origin during events. For example, the restriction might be to choose a South American country or a country that has a cold climate for much of the year. You are not allowed to choose a country from which a character already exists at LOTUS except when clearly indicated.

[ 3 ] Your character must be appropriate for their country and time period.

The reason you choose a country and time period for your character is to utilize the culture and surroundings of that time and place in the development of your character. Your character should properly reflect their origins and should not be completely contrary to them. Your character's development should NOT include anachronisms, things that don't fit into that country and time's culture and lots of unbelievable instances. This is not meant to restrict your character to a stereotype. You should still have lots of leeway to make an interesting, believable and nuanced character. If you don't want to follow this rule, choose a different country and time period for your country.

[ 4 ] Your character should have some skill that would make them a good LOTUS agent.

LOTUS is a mysterious organization that is committed to resolving the time crisis and opposing the Church of Aeturna. Mysterious organizations cannot recruit useless members, and thus your character needs to be useful in some capacity to LOTUS to be recruited. Please see this post on specialization tracks to get an idea of what is useful to LOTUS. As an addendum, do not be afraid of giving your character some power! Not all characters should be presidents or princesses, however, they also shouldn't all be farmgirls and penniless orphans. Soldiers, knights, politicians, (reformed) criminals, scientists, and concubines would all be interesting characters and possible assets to LOTUS.

[ 5 ] Jyoti is in control of appearance and character design.

This is how characters work in LOTUS: there are some predrawn first stage characters, but they are largely semi-customs. There is usually a set theme given in events, and you are then responsible for developing a character, particularly their personality and history but also their appearance, around that theme. Jyoti will then draw your character based on your description, HOWEVER this does not mean that Jyoti will draw what you detailed word-for-word. Jyoti will use your description as a basis and add in her own design aesthetic to come up with the final product. All players so far have been happy with how their character turns out.

[ 6 ] Develop a 'good' character.

This is more of a guideline than a rule. When developing a character, remember the basics of good character creation. Characters should not be one-note and should have some depth and complexity to them. They should be interesting, and very importantly, should not be without flaws. Characters that excel at everything or 'have too much good stuff' are not good characters and are not fun to RP with. Likewise with characters that don't excel at anything at all or are completely terrible people. Remember that you are RPing with others as your character, and it should be fun for everyone.

If you do not follow these rules, you have a much lower chance of getting a LOTUS character. If you do get a LOTUS character but there are problems pertaining to some of the above points, Jyoti or a staff member will contact you in order to tweak your character for LOTUS.

The point of these rules is not to make LOTUS a more exclusive shop by shutting out potential players. Everyone is absolutely welcome, even if you feel like you may not be the best writer. The point is to ensure that all characters fit well into the LOTUS setting and that RP is fun and we are able to move the plot forward well. What is appreciated more than anything else, even amazing writing, is that you are an active part of the shop, its community and its plot, and that you try to do your very best in your writing, character development, and meshing well with the LOTUS setting.

If you ever have any questions about character development, or are struggling with the LOTUS setting or developing your own character for the shop, Jyoti and the staff will be more than happy to help you as much as they can in this regard!

How do you get your (free!) LOTUS character? Easy. Develop a character and create an application (a 'quest thread') in the application list subforum of the LOTUS guild. Once you get staff approval for your concept, Jyoti will draw your character. That's it!

[ inspiration ]

Final Fantasy VIII- The interior of the Lotus building was originally based on Balamb Garden.
Final Fantasy X- The exterior of the Lotus building and it's general atmosphere was inspired by Mt. Gagazet in both FFX and FFX-2.
Hill Stations in India- Like FFX, the atmosphere of the Lotus building was inspired by many hill stations Jyoti has visited in India.
One Hundred Years of Solitude- This amazing novel is where much of the memory loss idea came from.
The House of the Spirits- Like One Hundred Years of Solitude, this novel inspired a lot of ideas about time.
World History Class- Strangely enough, most of the setting for Lotus comes from things discussed in Jyoti's World History course.
The Catori Archipelago- The first breedables shop where Jyoti used to work. A lot of the structure was carried over.
