{ { P R O F I L E Name: Alberto Riviera + Nicknames: Al (although he detests it) Age: 21 + Birthdate: June 11, 1907 Gender: Male + Orientation: Straight Homeland: Nicaragua + Home Region: San Carlos, Río San Juan + Religion: Roman Catholic Native Language: Spanish + Additional Languages: Fluent in English, with a small smattering of Chinese
Body: + Build: Lean but muscular, a fit body for combat under harsh conditions + Weight: 220 + Height: 6'1" + Skin Tone: Cinnamon brown Hair: + Color: Soft black + Style: Shaggy overall, shorter in the back with longer bangs around his face Eyes: + Color: Chocolate brown + Shape: Vaguely almond shaped
Family: + Mother: Lucia Riviera - housewife, age 45; deceased from a malaria outbreak + Father: Javier Riviera - age 52; member of the guerrilla forces following August César Sandino - status unknown + Older Sister: Elena Riviera - helps out around the house, age 26; deceased from a malaria outbreak + Younger Brother: Alejandro Riviera - age 3 months; deceased from a malaria outbreak
Likes: Women, music, city life, dark chocolate, birds, gambling, family Dislikes: Dawdling, cats, being away from people for too long, drinking too much, cigarettes
Faults: Women, his pride, getting carried away/absorbed in what he's doing, impatient Virtues: Courteous (or so he appears to be), outgoing, street-wise, friendly
Personality: This young man is an actor on the make. His personality can easily sway in favor of anybody he happens to talk to, in order to reflect what he would think that the certain person would find likable. In essence, he can fluctuate between a number of personality types and one may never be entirely certain if it is the real Alberto or not.
He can come off as either genuinely likable or an aloof, shifty character. He often looks this way when he stands back for a moment to observe. He does like people, though, and will eventually make an endeavor to get on a person's good side, but whether or not his intentions are honest is a different tale. This is all a defense mechanism when he feels uncomfortable somewhere, or when he is required to play the part. He spent much of his first few months at LOTUS in these assumed roles, but since then has started to become more open with others. But some habits die hard and he finds himself slipping small lies into an otherwise truthful conversation (mostly as an added flourish intended to impress the party he's talking to).
He does have a strong sense of loyalty and honor to his comrades in arms. Once a person takes the time to get to know him (or vice versa), he is fairly inclusive with them and will do what he can to help them, should they need it.
Alberto gets carried away or engulfed in a project rather easily, and focuses so hard on a set goal that he blurs the other details. He also gets impatient when things begin to carry on too slowly, and will either fidget or have to find something to focus his mind on.
Skills: He is very much a people person, and as such is able to blend in, mingle, and read a person. He has a talent for being charismatic and shifting his personality to fit with whomever he's talking to, and this benefits him well enough. His common sense and street smarts tend to get him further than any kind of book knowledge he has, so he uses these abilities in order to gather information (being that he has a good memory for it). This also gives him an advantage when helping with strategies.
Because of his time spent as a guerrilla fighter, he has a basic knowledge of medicine (treating minor wounds, proper methods of survival under harsh conditions, etc.), as well as being quite physically fit. His strengths tend to run more towards speed, as he is relatively quick on his feet. He has a decent handle on long-range weaponry, such as guns or projectiles, but is not one to go down easily in a fist fight. If anything he lets the adrenaline rush to his head and gets carried away in a close-range one-on-one fight.
He has fairly sharp senses, his strongest being (oddly) his sense of smell. He likes to tell people that this is because his mother was very liberal with the use of chili powder in their food during his childhood, but it remains to be seen whether or not this is true.

{ { H I S T O R Y H I S T O R Y
Alberto was born in a small village outside of San Carlos in 1907. He was born to a family consisting of Javier, a fisherman, and his mother Lucia, as well as his older sister Elena (already 5 years of age). It was expected that he would follow his father into the fishing industry. He grew up close-knit with his family and the village, often exploring the nearby rainforests or river with other town boys. Their family was poor, as were many others in their town, and bad fishing seasons put the whole town under a great deal of stress. Bad years for crops also made the small Riviera family garden suffer, so Alberto was always expected to do his part to help his mother and older sister around the house.
In youth, he already proved himself to be an excellent liar. Because of his eager attitude to play the man of the house, his mother was more apt to believe him over his sister Elena, who had been in trouble multiple times for sneaking out after dark to the house of her boyfriend, as well as her outright annoyance with her younger brother. He figured if he could get away with it at home, there was a good chance that he might be able to do the same out in the streets. He began simply, using the boys he regularly caroused around with as a starting point, and using small lies. He could appear to be telling the truth, and the fact that he could get away with it exhilarated him.
The presence of the Marines and other migrant workers passing through on their way to work on the Panama canal was a normal sight, but young Alberto was fascinated with them. He asked a number of them questions about their homelands, their language, their cultures, and kept each bit of knowledge ready at hand to throw back in the conversation later or to use later at home. While a number of the strangers he questioned brushed him off and ignored him, a few found it enlightening, seeing as most of the adults avoided them and warned their children to do the same. He also used this opportunity to exercise his “skill”, and for the most part his small “excitements” proceeded successfully without detection. There was one individual in particular, an older seaman by the name of Eric Rochester, who was able to see through one of his simple lies. Alberto was in shock – he had gotten away with it for so long, only for a foreigner to discount what he was saying. When he was unable to challenge the facts that the Marine had presented, the older man merely smiled and laughed, and with that Alberto knew he couldn’t hate him – he too was playing a game. The two became quick friends; Eric was especially happy to share his knowledge, books, and part of his lunch with the young man. It was from him that Alberto perfected the strained English he had picked up all throughout childhood, as well as learning to read and write the language as well. He became somewhat of a curiosity to the other Marines who passed by, but neither seemed to mind this much.
He kept this a secret at home, where his liberal family was very at odds with U.S. involvement. His parents were against the presence of the United States, joining many other liberals in believing that they were attempting to steal their resources and colonize them (under the ruse of building a canal in Nicaragua). With his father so busy and his mother and sister never approaching the base, he felt his secret was safe. Life continued on in a pretty linear pattern for the young man: helping his father on the docks, assisting around the house at times, hanging out with the local boys, exploring the nearby rainforests, and going to mass on Sundays (and when other events popped up in town - most little joys were shared by all).
1925 would prove to be the start of a hard road for Alberto. The United States withdrew their forces for a short time from Nicaragua when the political squabbles became too much. Eric was among them, leaving without so much as a goodbye. The desertion by his friend hurt Alberto, who had valued the friendship highly, and he began to distrust strangers and foreigners. His family temporarily found joy in a good fishing season, as well as the birth of his younger brother Alejandro in the dawn of 1926. A small malaria outbreak swept the village that year, picking off the elderly, young, and sick. His newly-born younger brother, sister, and mother all perished.
In 1927, with no family left and after a meager attempt at making a living in fishing, Alberto and his father packed up a few spare belongings and joined the guerrilla forces of Augusto Sandino. His memory and skill in deception did him well, and the small dispatch soon joined the main forces. They marched together with Sandino into the mountains of Las Segovias, where the sustained war against the Conservative forces and allied Marines dragged on. It was mostly by chance and by his father’s hand that Alberto was saved from injury many times. He learned to steady his aim over time, as well as basic skills for planning strategies, medical care with limited supplies in the battlefield, and aided in many raids. A few months after joining, a dispatch of fighters (his father included) was sent out to raid a camp further towards his hometown. They never returned, and Alberto never heard news of them.
In the dawn of 1928, he was assigned to a group to convey an invitation to a small group that had staged an uprising against Marines in a nearby county. He joined them, hoping to perhaps find news of his father. Upon entering the first border town however, his group was separated by the presence of U.S. Marines; each felt it best to scatter and reconvene at a secret rendezvous point. Alberto lay low in the home of a comrade’s sister while the Marines patrolled. A week passed and the family was feeling tension at his presence, until the woman’s husband urged him to leave by the next night – they did not want the wrath of the law to fall on them because of a stranger. Upon finding shelter at a nearby inn, the U.S. forces marched through the streets, and with them were the other members of his party – most importantly the message courier. Their mission was compromised, and should he be discovered.. the possibilities were making him dizzy. As he watched from the second story window, he knew he was cornered, and the reality must have hit him very suddenly as his head began to swim. A struggle occurred between the captives and the captors, and a bright flash of light and a gunshot were the last things he heard before he passed out.
He still felt ill when he awoke. The sun had already set and the outside was pitch black. He realized if he were to stay that he would likely be caught – the innkeepers would turn him in if they feared for their own lives. He grabbed his meager belongings, donned a jacket and a coolie hat left abandoned in the vacant area downstairs, and headed out into the streets. The cool air did his head some good, but something still felt very amiss. The streets were empty, and the night was eerily quiet.
If by chance or some twist of fate, one light of activity still burned brightly – a large ship was docked nearby, taking applicants for a program he had never heard of. They called out to him, offering him protection should he join them. Bereft of his comrades, his family dead, and his father long since missing (and presumed dead), he signed up for this program. He hoped that this L.O.T.U.S. would help him get out of the country, to where his skills were appreciated… and far away from his own government.

{ { R O O M The room he resides in is small, but he makes good use of the space. The carpet is simple - hard and a grayish-blue in color, as well as kept rather clean (unless it is near the door, by which it is considerably dusty). The walls are white-washed clean and barren for the most part, with the exception of the crucifix that hangs directly above his dresser and mirror (his mother's rosary beads are draped around it).
His bed is normally a mess as he just rolls out of it in the mornings and doesn't think to make it unless he's about to go to sleep. The sheets are white with a red quilted comforter. Above the bed hang a collection of photographs and stained letters from his journal, while said book resides on the bedside table, where a plain white desk lamp acts as an auxiliary source of light.
His clothes are kept neat and put away in the dresser, although his military jacket is draped on the back of his door, while the military duffel bag is shoved into a corner.
