FIONA'S BIOGRAPHY
Not That She Knows What That Is.

User Image >> Name. Fionnghuala (Fiona)
>> Gender. Female
>> Age. 32
>> Nationality. Scottish
>> Reason(s) for joining LOTUS. Fiona believes that her being displaced, and even the "where" she was displaced to was done by fairies. The first was a practical joke, but the second... well, they strongly believes that something is wrong with the fairies in this new place. She joins LOTUS to help 'fix' those fairies and put them back to where and how they should be. Because she is not familiar with all the fairies in this new world, she has to rely on what others tell her - her beliefs give her motivation and purpose, but it is LOTUS that gives her method and direction.
>> Pertinent skills. > Green Thumb. Fiona has extensive knowledge about growing crops as well as utilizing them into food, dyes, and medicines.
> Husbandry. In terms of taking care of animals, she has the basic knowledge. However, this was never Fiona's expertise, but she can herd, cull, butcher, and dress simple wounds. This is not her strongest point.
> Childcare. Perhaps one of her strong points. Fiona loves children and could spend all day with them.
> Crude Fighting. Even though she may not have finesse, Fiona can throw a weapon around with strong moments and still get the mark. Years upon years have built up her muscles, and in her past she could not afford to miss.
> Strong-arm. Due to a lifetime of hard work, Fiona is very strong, even given her age. Even with her slight arthritis, she battles through it and does whatever it is she feels need to be done.
> Cooking. Anywhere and everywhere, Fiona can cook up a storm. No one around her will ever go hungry, and woe to the person who she feels is "too skinny"!

>> Personality. Fiona is a very strong-willed woman. By the standards of her people, she is Elderly and deserves the respect given to those who have seen and done "that". As one so old, she demands such respect and when she speaks expects others to listen. That being said, she more than knows that she does not contain all the answers but if you wish to correct her you better have a good reason. Stubborn to the core, it takes a lot to get her moving. However, if its something that needs to be done, then she's your woman. Because once you get this mountain moving there is no stopping her until the job is done.

>> Non-abilities.
Fiona cannot read, write, or do anything above simple math. She feels that they are useless skills and those that cannot do things that are productive to survival or creating surplus are thereby weak. However, by being weak they also need more attention because they simply cannot fend or take care of themselves. She is also not diplomatic or political. Things are as they are, and Fiona does not think that beating around the bush helps anyone.

>> History.
Fiona is from the Iron Age of Scotland, specifically around 500BC. She was the youngest surviving child in her family and stayed in the same settlement her whole life. As a child she lived as all the others in the household – following around her mother and pestering the others with questions while still getting her chores done. Fiona's father died when she was young and she retains no memories of even his face. Instead, her brother Daimhain stepped up to the plate and took care of the family as best he could. He was the father Fiona never had – he protected her and taught her all the things she didn't learn from the mothers. Daimhain was a charismatic storyteller and singer, and while Fiona tried she could never live up to his greatness.

Fiona's best friend was Eimhear. As young children, on the night of Beltaine, during the time of rebirth, they made a blood oath to grow up together – get old and raise children and grandchildren. They were inseperable and always did everything together. They would chase after the pigs, get tangled in threads, and be chased away from the hearth for snatching cooking bread. Their punishments were shared and reveled together in all their victories. They were united in their lack of a father, and because Eimhear did not have any older brothers, Daimhain took her under his wing as well. They had a third party in their little groups, even if he did not participate in the blood oath. Diarmad excelled where they left off, and was like Daimhan's protégé.

They grew despite hardships: too much rain this year, too little then. The raids were scary, though they lost some of their fear when the three learned that people usually did not die in such occasions (though there were accidents). One year a plague took over the crops and they had to rely on the kindness and trade with nearby settlements only to survive the harsh winter. They raided more to supplement the trade. Daimhan was too devoted. He was raising the children of his father's, and they came before him. Before the winter was over, Daimhan succumbed to starvation and pneumonia.

It was very hard on Fiona. Her friends and family helped her through the time, and Daimhan lived on with Diarmad's stories. The years that followed did go by in a kind of blur. Life moved around her. Eimhear and Diarmad got married. At the same time Fiona met Aedan, who had been at the village for awhile. He knew Daimhan, and it was this bond that helped him to court Fiona. She eventually did marry him, but was still in her slight depression. When her first son, Ciaran was born, she became fully recovered. She had a son to take care of - she could no longer be selfish in her remorse.

And then came Senga and Innis. They truly were a family.

>> Views of the "Future".
Fiona is not horribly impressed by the future. For one thing, she wouldn't be there if they hadn't "angered" the gods to begin with and destroyed a sacred crystal. She also feels that many of the people are lazy; they don't spend enough time with their children or families, nor do they spend enough time building/growing/cooking/etc (it's the fairies' fault for distracting everyone). The quest for knowledge is not for her, and she finds such activities as reading and writing to be mere frivolries. Why waste the time? All knowledge that needs to be passed on can be done with song and tale. The technologies do not impress her either. Sure, some things might be needed, but if she doesn't have to use or see it then she's not missing anything. Everything (in her mind) is controlled or possessed by some fairy, and she would prefer not to put her welfare in the hands of such mischief creatures. She is not curious to know any of the intricacies of technology and doesn't feel that even listening to how something works is worth an ounce of her time.

>> Past Acquaintances.
> Aedan. (/ /) Husband - deceased
Aedan was a boy from a nearby settlement when Fiona first met him. He courted her and they were married not too long after. Fiona was loyal and did love her husband. It helped that he was a very victorious warrior and a caring father. Really, she did not feel that she could have gotten such a man. When he died, she was sad – but it was a way of life and she has moved on in her role as a grandmother and widow.
> Ciaran. (19) Oldest Son - married
Ciaran was the first son Fiona ever had. She was exceedingly lucky because he survived to adulthood and got married. He was blessed with twins with his wife Osla and they still live in the settlement. Fiona is a very proud and doting grandmother.
>Senga . (15) Middle Daughter - married
Senga was actually Fiona's second daughter, but her first was stillborn. She is married to Caomh and as of the time of Fiona's Displacement was pregnant for the third time but had not given birth. Senga lives in a nearby settlement.
> Innis. (10) Youngest Daughter - betrothed
There were miscarriages, and one son was born between Senga and Innis. However he died unnamed. Being the baby of the family, Innis was spoiled. She was betrothed and living with her sister at the time of Fiona's Displacement.
> Riaghan & Siofra. (02) Grandson & Granddaughter
They are the twin children of Ciaran. Ciaran's wife had a miscarriage before she was pregnant with these two. It is said that Osla had something go wrong with the pregnancy and won't have any more children. So Riaghan and Siofra are very cherished.
> Eimhear. (31) Best Friend -also a grandmother
She was a year younger than Fiona, but neither of them cared. They were attached to the hip as children, almost as if they were twins themselves. They both stayed in the settlement. Eimhear married a boy named Diarmad from their settlement who was often hanging a round them and has two children of her own: Osla (16), Ciaran's wife, and Alaister (11), male.
> Daimhin. (/ /) Older Brother - deceased
Daimhin was multiple years older than Fiona. He was her protector and source of all the stories as she was growing up, since their father died shortly after she was born. He stayed in the settlement and actually took Aedan under his wing when the boy came to them, which was how Fiona knew him. When Daimhin died suddenly and childless it tore Fiona apart, but the birth of her first son helped her recover and cope with his untimely death.

FIONA'S WORLD
Iron Age Scotland (500 BC)

To understand a person, one must know their past.
DISCLAIMER: I have picked, chosen, and editted, from sources for an ease of reading. The Iron Age is prehistoric, so what is known is interpretations by archaeologists and does change with the generations.

>> Geographics.
Fiona is from the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland. The Islands are of rolling hills and larger foothills. There is an abundance of stone and the land is incredibly fertile. While there is an excess of grasses, there is a lack of trees.

>> Communities/Households.
Families tended to live together in very large (relative) housing settlements. These settlements were fortified. A family consisted of the parents, and children, although grandparents and extended families might be included depending on the family. The households can be for one family or many. Those that were lucky enough to have children grow and have babies of their own would stay in the community with one of their children. This allowed for them to continue to pass on their knowledge and experience to the community. They were fortified in a loose manner. This was because the raiding and "warfare" was more for prestige and honor as opposed to bloodshed. There was actually a lot of trading among the settlements, and the warfare was symbolic for the most part.

>> Gender/Age Roles.
The roles were split, but when in a bind there was overlap when it was needed. Also, there were two "spheres" within every society in Iron Age Scotland: the public and the private. The public is that which is set out with prestige and status. It is also what is usually considered "better" than the other, even though they were both extremely important.
Women: The women had a bigger role in the private world of society. They could gain their own status but it was more of a respect form and not a prestige wealth as one might expect in the public sphere. Women were in charge of the household and everything dealing with that. This included (but was not limited to) raising children, cooking, cleaning, weaving, making pottery, making tools, growing crops, raising animals, and protecting the settlement.
Men: The men are more known for the public sector. The culture was patriarchal. Men were the "leaders" or chiefs. Some status was passed on by birth, but much of it was earned by one's own actions and victories. The men were largely in charge of their fighting weapons including swords and spears – those used for warfare. They did help out with the other chores when needed, but it was not their 'job'.
Children: Children spend much of their time with their mothers and helping out with their chores. Without children, the settlements would not function as smoothly. They commonly did everything their mothers did (both boys and girls) until they participated in the rights which would separate the men and the women.
Elderly: The elderly were treated with great respect. They pass down the stories and tales of the families. It was a hard life and those that lived to see their grandchildren were elderly indeed. They have the experience that others desire and they are responsible for really helping children grow into model adults.

>> Religion.
The religion of these people was polytheistic. There were the gods and there were fairies. The gods were omnipotent, and above all fertility and agriculture was praised. The continuity of the seasons, animals, people, and community, was important above all else. The individual was only survived by their children and their legends if they were lucky enough to have them. The gods must always be respected and did demand animal sacrifice in their honor. Mostly, people were just supposed to worship, respect, and praise, the gods. The fairies had a more known view in every day life. They controlled things as well as did acts of mischief to people, things, and animals. Everything that goes wrong could be blamed on the fairies while large events were the acts of the gods. Please note, I grouped everything in the concept of a fairy (brownies, mermen, etc).

>> Agriculture.
Crops-to-eat include: barley, rye, oats, emmer wheat, beans, peas, and flax.
Other crops include: flax for cloth and oil, woad for blue dye for clothes/tattooes
Domestic animals include: cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, and dogs.
Tools include: ploughs (ards), harrows, and sickles.

>> Technology.
By modern standards, the technology is very primitive. Supplies were limited to stone, metal, pottery, and plant and animal byproducts. Yes, there were swords.

>>Entertainment.
There were simpler games with glass and boards. Also, musicians were extremely important for keeping the stories and legends alive, as well as giving praise to the gods. Hunting was also an entertainment, not a necessity given how abundant the land was – there was no need to hunt. There were also festivals and many holidays. And you mustn't forget the beer!
