• My parents were out of town for the weekend so I decided to spend some well deserved time with my friends, whom I rarely saw anymore. Unfortunately shortly after I got to Kaden's house all of my friend's boyfriends came over, not wanting to watch a make-out fest I decided to head home. The radio was blasting a Jim Morrison song that went something like "Killer on the road." Slightly creeped out I turned it down, something about this old highway made me nervous.

Clank, clank sputter clang. My car died almost simultaneously with that thought. What did I do now? I sniffed the air. My radiator just busted? I assumed. The smoke from the hood told me that my assumption was correct. I sighed and leaned my head back against the car seat, "Great."

I looked back at my purse and snatched my cell phone from it. NO SERVICE greeted me with mocking irony, I had just bought this phone a week ago because of the "great coverage". Even more irritated I opened the door and walked to the trunk. Upon opening the trunk I realized that my dad had taken my tools. I slammed the trunk closed.

"Always be prepared Zeta," I muttered mocking my father's concerned voice that I had heard everyday since I got my license.

I opened the passenger side door and took out the flashlight that I had just bought from the drug store right after I got my phone. I also put my spare battery pack in my pocket thankful that something was going right. I was about ten miles away from home and had no intention of sleeping in my car. I closed and locked my car after taking out my purse and guitar. I checked both doors and began walking with the flashlight guiding me along the way. It was funny that something so small could serve as such a big security blanket.

I walked to the beat of killer on the road and was slightly annoyed at the realization that I was creeping myself out.

I sang "Killer on the road." My eye twitched STOP THAT!

I didn't know what would creep me out more at this point, continuing to walk alongside the road with only my flashlight or hearing a car pull up next to me. It was almost one in the morning my watch informed me. Though it shouldn't have bothered, I could tell by the bite in the air and the frost on the ground. I still had seven more miles to go and my guitar was feeling increasingly heavy. Would I really have cared that much if someone had stolen this thing?!

I heard something behind me and used all my self control not to jump out of my skin. A new more vibrant light joined my flashlight making it look inferior. I couldn't handle the suspense any more I turned around and stared at the car. My heart pounded in my ears barley blocking out Killer on the Road. I couldn't see anything inside of the car due to the tinted windows. I put my hands above my eyes trying to see better.

I put my keys in between my fingers ready to use them as brass knuckles if I had to.

"Hey," a man's voice called out.

"GET AWAY FROM ME!" My common sense shouted in my head. Then...Wait...Was that Billy?

    "Billy?" I questioned.

"Yeah, sorry if I scared you."

"You dickhead you almost gave me a heart attack!"

    "Do you need a ride?"

I gave him my oh so famous I can't believe you asked such a stupid obvious question look. He smiled in response and unlocked the door. I threw my guitar in back and sat down in the front seat.

"What are you doing here? You live on the other side of town."

"I went over to Kaden's house and she told me that you left her house early...So I decided to come and say hey."

"Oh." It didn't surprise me, Kaden was convinced I needed a boyfriend.

"This looks a lot like Jessie's car," I said after awhile.

"Yeah," he said lighting up a cigarette. "He let me borrow it."

I raised an eyebrow, not wanting to be questioned any longer he turned on the radio. Killer on the Road came on yet again. He turned it down.

"That song creeps me out!" He proclaimed.

Clank, clank sputter. His car died, we stared at each other.

I smiled sardonically, "Great." I said. We were about two miles away from my house.

    "Guess we better start walking."

    "Yeah."

We started walking down the road talking and laughing. We were nearly to my house when my flashlight made out a slumped figure just up ahead. I grabbed Billy's arm, he had already seen. The body was that of a man there was a pool of blood around him. I started shaking, "We have to call the police!" I remember saying. My cell phone still wasn't working. I cursed to myself in frustration. The body groaned and Billy screamed. And to think he was my knight in shining armor a moment ago...

We stared at the body. I moved my flashlight up to his face. It was Jessie! I should have remembered my earlier conversation with Billy about him, but I didn't, I just wanted to get him home. I should have remembered. How could I have been so thick?

"WTF?" Billy asked. We ran to his side and without another word dragged him to his feet and carried him the rest of the way to my house. As soon as we had laid him down on the couch I grabbed the phone from the kitchen and called the police. Nervously I went back into the living room and found Billy standing over Jessie's dead body drenched in blood humming Killer on the Road.
