The Clockwork Droids were repair robots that stalked Madame de Pompadour in 18th century France from their 51st century spaceship. They believed that in taking her brain, they could repair their broken ship. It is never discovered by The Doctor why they believe only her brain would do, but it is later revealed to us that the name of their ship was the SS Madame de Pompadour.
