maybe i'm the only one who didn't want to learn about sex? or i just didn't care until i got older then i could just use the internet

or was it a problem that i was uncomfortable with it because before that point i was so heavily taught about private parts and the first time i was ever taught about sex other than private parts my mom said over and over 'you wait for marriage when you're an adult'

idrk

but i do not feel bad about not learning about it too much (i just got the basics)

i mean i don't like that schools make you just sit there all day every day and learn s**t you will never need again or stuff you don't want to learn at that time

isn't it more liberal to let kids pick what they want to learn instead of forcing sex ed on everyone?

Anyways my school literally just never taught it. Like ever. And I live in the super liberal part of CA

I only leaned anything thanks to TV and the Internet.

I'm not so sure how it works in America, but how are schools lying about sex-ed n order to force people to abstain?

They outright tell students condoms and birth control don't work. Or that they're somehow unhealthy and will get you sick/damage your organs. They also forbid masturbation and demonize every type of sex.
One of my friends lived in the Deep South, and they slut-shamed a whole lot too.
One time, a teacher demonstrated by using a cupcake with fancy icing to represent a girls virginity. He then licked all the fancy icing off the cupcake, and said that the equivalent happens to girls who have sex before marriage. They aren't considered "pretty" anymore, they're now seen as used and dirty and gross, because who wants a cupcake with all the icing licked off? (uuggghh)
And of course, the boys never got this talk.
neutral
And yes, this is all 100% legal.

WTF burning_eyes

i went to a catholic school in the south and don't remember any blatant sexism like that

other than little things like only boys can be priests ofc

Greedy Giver

I remember watching a video of a mom explaining to these two girls about their reproductive systems, which happened to be a good conversation for morning breakfast, so she made a pancake shaped like a uterus with the fallopian tubes and the ovaries and everything! (she was very skilled with that pancake batter)

yeah I think most of the sex-ed I went through was basically:
heres anatomy
STDs are horrible
if you have sex, you can and most likely WILL get an STD or get pregnant.
don't have sex= dont have STD or get pregnant
if you CANNOT STOP YOURSELF from having sex, then use condoms. Otherwise you'll probably get an STD (or get pregnant)

it wasn't until much later I found out how poorly educated I was on how my body works.

My health class was horrible back in High School. All my (male)teacher did was rant on and on about how "evil" and "immoral" abortion was. Oh, and he showed us pickled fetuses that he kept in the back closet, along with a bunch of other lovely propaganda. What a freak.

Anyway, I'm very lucky that my mom was able to actually give me a broad, open-minded view about sex and birth control.

What the- the baby project doesn't teach you crap about STDs, contraceptives, or anything else. Sounds like a scare method. "If you're not ready for this, no sex."
That is literally all it is. It's to scare teenagers into not becoming teen parents. And for those whom it doesn't scare, they get to learn how to take care of a baby. Not that it does a whole hell of a lot for some of those ones. We had one girl in our year or the year behind us who was pregnant something along the lines of... I wanna say three times? During the course of our high school careers. I think. I don't remember; that was six or eight years ago.

I later learned everything through my husband's urging and the internet, a few years before we married (I was a new adult).
In my school for sex ed we had to watch a cartoon. The cartoon gave no information apart from where the guy sticks his junk and why he goes it ... This was in the ninth grade ... We would have learnt more from porn

Mine was not awesome. It was like, anatomy of parts, p***s+ v****a= babies. And then some std's and stuff. But they didn't really go into a lot of detail. Or teach about options when it came to birth control. And there were no suggestions on where to get birth control. Or what to do if you get pregnant. Or really anything.

Actually. I think I may have been taught abstinence only. And there were A LOT of pregnant girls...

Oh, and we had to take home a crying baby doll for the weekend. But mine died sad

I live in eastern Kentucky. The words "Bible Belt" should say it all.

Basically they had some morbidly obese woman try her best to get into the classroom (poor thing, she shouldn't have even been teaching in her condition) and pop a tape into the VCR for us to watch. All the tape said was "don't have sex right now because you need to get through high school before you have kids, also STDs are bad" and the woman never even bothered to explain anything to us. Literally "here watch this... ok bye" and that was it.

Also, after I graduated, they completely changed how they teach sex ed... It's more of a Christianity-based "God says no sex before marriage" lesson. That pisses me off more than anything. And yes, it's a public school. ********.

So yeah, whoever claims there aren't shitty sex ed classes can kiss my a**.

Your mom told you are made by massive gang bangs in the spring and fall? XD What.

I love how those centers get slammed for showing people how to stay safe.

I know, right!? seriously, I fully believe that christian conservatives are actively malicious people who want to further a sexist, heteronormative, homophobic, racist, theocratic agenda and start a new inquisition. their political and social actions certainly support that hypothesis, anyway. there are plenty of blind followers who are christian conservatives, who fully believe that they are not doing any such thing.... but I am willing to bet that the leaders behind these political stances are doing so knowingly and willingly.

I love my Pride Center. it is literally my savior. that is where I was uplifted, and educated, and guided and helped.

Oooookay. emotion_facepalm I read "maturation" completely incorrectly and wondered where you got that leap in logic from.

It's dumb that boys and girls aren't taught about each other's stuff in general. Just amongst my friends there have been moments of "you know that isn't how that works right..." I get the practical aspect of covering the self first, but by the time ya finish high school you oughtta know something. I think people just gather (sometimes stupid) information from peers and TV. gonk Way to set up these kids' lives. You'll give 'em condoms, but you won't teach them about the sexes in sex ed because... ?

that's hilareous. xd

and yeah, exactly. the fact that people don't teach kids about sex at a young age, and don't teach much anything about sex ever, and refuse to teach people about the opposite sex, and insist on teaching that sex is shameful, and insist on teaching one set of standards for sex to men and a completely contrary standard for sex to women.....

are all individual terrible and awful things, which combine to be a complete ******** of culture, which can only end in disaster.

Vicious Reveler

Mine was actually pretty good, I mostly just came in to see how bad it gets. Pretty bad, by the looks. For such an important area, I know it's one that far too many people don't get good information on.

Went to public schools in New Zealand. We got basic anatomy stuff towards the end of primary school, then a little more in depth at intermediate. At high school we had a twice weekly health class from ages 13-15. It was in these nice classrooms that were in a quiet place, that had no desks and just a bunch of sofas and comfy chairs. There was a set-out curriculum of topics to be covered, so it was standardized and it was pretty comprehensive in the range of topics covered.

No abstinence only, although we were encouraged to wait until we were ready and not be pressured to lose it early if we weren't sure, but that's pretty sensible. We did basic anatomy and the mechanics of sex, but also emotional implications of it. We got taught about pretty much every form of birth control and barrier device, and how to use them properly. We got taught about STD/I's of course, and what to do about them for the ones you can do things for. I'm pretty sure we got taught about pregnancy and birth, but I don't remember that part well, it was quite a while back now. We even got taught about homosexual relationships, sex and protection to use in those cases. We got taught where to go to get protection if we needed it, and where to go to get sexual health related stuff done. Then there were conversations on stuff that goes on with teenagers socially, peer pressure and drug and drinking use and stuff like that.

It could get cringey and embarrassing, but I'm glad I had a good education with it in my school, since many people don't get that.

My sex ed class was only this , "If you dont have it , nothing bad will happen to you. "

Anxious Associate

First sex ed class I had was is sixth grade in science class. Your basic topics: HIV, AIDS, disease, reproduction, male and female differences. I think we had it for about a week.

Next 10th grade (first and last time in high school -_-): Same s**t basically. Wasn't anything new from what I learn from TV. And that also lasted for a week in science class. Nothing handed out like condoms.

I don't think they take sex ed seriously, at least where i live (FL). What the hell is someone suppose to learn in one week about sex. And of course you have the laughs and giggles going on. The embarrassment for asking a question and seeming "slutty" for actually knowing a thing or two about sex.

Surprising abstinence wasn't hammered down our throats.
