You guys are reminding me of a website I went to once, an online store.. probably a shopping@yahoo kind of store, and the entire menu was java applets. Note how I'm saying that plural? Yeah, every single item. There were at least 40 or 50 java applets lol.
What.

Edit: "My next laptop's gonna have a i7" i though. "Won't overhead like the old Turion" i thought. Yeah, played Far Cry 3 and the CPU went critical. The GPU was fine, though (well, as fine as 70°C are for a GPU anyways). What.

Laptop models are kinda notorious for being meh.

Though at that in general you can still see some increase, just depends what you're doing I guess.

I just went from a system rolling an i5-2500K to a new box rolling an i7-6700K, despite otherwise having a notably more vented case and even a GPU that's partially water-cooled the 6700K runs on average a few degrees warmer w/ EIST enabled (and downclocked) than my 2500K ran w/ EIST disabled (full-clock always),

Admittedly I gimped on the CPU cooler a little, same general zalman style but the last system has a 120mm cooler vs the 92mm on this one :/

What specific CPU do you got in your new laptop? Definitely find it weird you hit the thermtrip on the CPU while the GPU temps were only moderate.

Does anyone have any recommended (free) VPN clients? I'm trying to find one that isn't a hassle to use.

Intel Core i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz (Haswell, 22nm)
The GPU is a GeForce GTX 970M, considering their supposed efficiency i suppose that would explain why it only got that warm.

Weird, and it actually triggered in the event viewer as a thermtrip? Definitely wouldn't expect that to heat up quicker than a 970M in FC3 unless it's got some heatsink/cooling issues, though any fan/cooling issues would prob effect the 970M as well.

I don't really know my way around event viewer so i can't really tell you whether that happened, but the CPU got way above 90°C and suddenly the computer shut down. Just like my old Turion (actually that went into hibernation, the current one just shut down).

Funny thing is setting max CPU performance to 90% in the energy settings keeps it at a nice 70°C (+/- 2°) without affecting performance in the game (as far as i can tell).

Is Lua any good?

I'm a Node.js fan. That, Rails, and Python (Flask, usually) are at the top of the startup web dev industry. Corporation wise it's .NET and... I forgot what framework they put on a JVM nowadays.

Okay, but specifically I was asking about Lua sweatdrop
Because I found this https://love2d.org/ and want to try it.

Unless there's some way to turn PHP into a "use anywhere" language. If there is, I'd be set for life.

Define use anywhere? As in outside of website development? If so, then no, not really. I mean you CAN otherwise build PHP s**t as CLI applications, but it's main purpose will always be aimed specifically a per-request web stuff.

As for node.js, it's fun but the community can be absolutely dismal at times, as well as node.js itself.

I'd probably avoid Rails (RoR) at all costs though, RoR gets hyped like once every year and then fades away back into obscurity, I've met few people who really were happy with the fact they learned RoR, and the ones that were primarily were the few people who managed to score long-term jobs in RoR by companies who are too lazy to move to anything else, lol.

Funny thing is, whenever I find a company that uses Rails, they're looking for a dev. If you go to a Rails meetup, you'll meet at least a few people from companies that are hiring. That said, I haven't learned it. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and I've poked at it, but I haven't actually done anything useful with it other than install it. It looks nice.

Part of the problem is every time I think about making something with ruby, it turns out everyone else in the project doesn't know ruby, but knows python.. and python is pretty darn easy to work with, so I just use that.

Rails is like a cliff. To master it you have to climb up vertically for a thousand miles. Those who have mastered it say how great it is, but when you get up there you find out that its peak is 2 inches wide, and off in the distance you see staircases to castles up in the clouds. When you come back down and say that you mastered it, everyone else who's mastered it suck you into their cult and you become too scared to leave. You spend the rest of your career worshipping Sandi Metz.
