A watcher in the darkness, a defender of the night; such was the life of a gargoyle.

Rothelez had never questioned his nature, and now with an egg in the rookery it seemed even more important. Still he would rather be out gliding through sky with his mate than staying here with the young.
"Ah well," he said as he patted the egg, "this is no less important." In more than a century since they moved into the cathedral they called home only a handful of times had there ever been an intruder. But the surrounding human civilization had grown denser in recent years and the sound of sirens closer and more common. He smiled as he fingered the badge on his chest. It wasn't a real constable's badge, but still it was a touching gesture from the current vicar, one of the few humans aware of their presence. He could only imagine how it would be, to be awarded such respect by the rest of the humans they protected
"We must remain vigilant," he told the egg as he sat up straighter. "after all 'If the master had known at what hour the thief would arrive'..." His musings were cut short by the sound of breaking glass from the church below him.
"Well well, speak of the Devil" he muttered. He set the egg back in the straw-lined crate they used as a nest and said, "Now you stay here and be a good, um...egg." Then he turned and stretched his wings to their fullest as he took two steps and leapt from the roof.
As he deftly dove and turned to glide toward the broken window he mused to himself, "Not such a quiet night after all."
