During the late 1930s, Stalin launched the Great Purge , a campaign to purge the Communist Party of people accused of treachery. Targets were often executed, imprisoned in labor camps or exiled. Stalin replaced the New Economic Policy of the 1920s with Five-Year Plans. The estimate of people killed under Stalin's regime ranges from 3 to 60 million.
