Ann opened the door when she heard a knock. Upon seeing Kakashi, she groaned and started closing the door
Kakashi~Wait Ann! Wait
Ann~I’m fine. You don’t have to check up on me
Kakashi~I only wanted to invite you to dinner. You see-
Ann~I’m fine! You can’t ask me on a date! *****!
Kakashi~You didn’t let me finish!
Ann sighed and opened the door again
Kakashi~I was on a date with Iruka, but he got called in for a mission before we even got to eat. I had already cooked, and with Iruka being a glutton I made a lot. He’ll be gone for a few days and I thought you would appreciate the gesture of not having to cook for tonight.
Ann~Not stalking me?
Kakashi~No. Just a hot meal and some company
Ann~Okay…
She led him in, and they sat at the table
Ann~Are you going to eat?
Kakashi~When you’re not looking
She rolled her eyes at him as he brought out the things he packed
Kakashi~There was something else I wanted to tell you
Ann~Yeah? You’re gonna stop stalking me?
Kakashi~Yeah, but not by choice. As much as I enjoy play fighting with you and Ravi, Hokage wants to put me back on duty.
Ann~Oh…You’ll be safe?
Kakashi~Yeah. I’ll be back to bug you. I promise.
She reached out and held his hand.
Kakashi~The other part of the reason is that Hokage doesn’t want me to accidentally injure you or Ravi.
Ann~Sensei?
Kakashi~Yeah?
Ann~W-when’s your first mission?
Kakashi~Not til after Iruka is back.
Ann~Okay…Sensei?
He hummed
Ann~Can you stay the night?
Kakashi~Sure
He tightened his grip on her hand a moment
Kakashi~It’s okay if you don’t want to answer, but did your guardian go on a lot of missions?
Ann~Yeah. He’s an assassin…I know he can take care of himself, but…he can get out of control sometimes.
Kakashi~I won’t. I’ll come back. Here, move this way
He moved her onto his lap, sensing that she’s worried
Ann~What does this do?
Kakashi~Two things: you get to be held, and I get to eat with you without you seeing my face
Ann~I mean…I guess so…
Kakashi chuckled and patted her head
Kakashi~Some day we can do something a bit more normal. For now, just deal with this
Ann~Yeah, yeah…Thank you

Later that night, Kakashi laid with her and ran his fingers through her hair to help her fall asleep
Ann~Do you hate me?
Kakashi~What? No. What makes you think I hate you?
Ann~I dunno…
Kakashi sighed. He adjusted a little and brought her closer
Kakashi~I’ve never hated you Ann. Even when you bully me, a lot of times it’s fun.
Ann~Even when I tried to kill you?
Kakashi~Those weren’t as great…but I still don’t hate you for it. I probably was being a jerk if it escalated to that though
Ann~Okay…Sensei?
Kakashi~Yes Ann?
Ann~Will you still be here in the moning?
Kakashi~Yeah. I’ll be here for you
Ann~Even if I have a nightmare?
Kakashi~Especially if you have a nightmare. You shouldn’t have to be so grown up all the time. You’re still just a kid.
She nodded and pushed into his side
Kakashi~It’s okay to be afraid too…in the end, we’re still human
Ann~I don’t like the feeling of mortality…
Kakashi~you’re way too young to know that feeling
Ann~And here we are…I know too much about life, about the workings of the ninja world…and you’re stuck wondering why I have knowledge similar to someone who have seen war…
Kakashi~ann?
Ann~I find joy in fighting. Hurting others just to hurt them or to eventually kill them…I don’t like that…I don’t enjoy that…I don’t want to become that sensei…
Kakashi rolled on his side a bit to hug ann tightly, and she cried into his chest. He wondered what sort of things did she have to do before she came to the leaf? Should this be something he needs to be concerned about the safety of her and the village secrets?
Kakashi~ann…is this something you want to talk about?
Ann~no…n-not really…
Kakashi~Is it because it will reveal who you really are?
Ann~u-uh huh…
Kakashi~and who you really are is something you still don’t want to share?
She shook her and jabbed his side
Kakashi~hey…
Ann~S-stop asking questions…or I-I’ll run away again
Kakashi~okay…okay…
He brushed her hair some more and kissed her head. They laid together a while, with quiet sniffles from ann
Kakashi~The good thing about being in the village, is that no one expects you to stay acting like a ninja, even when you’re off duty. The only ones who have a hard time with that are the ones who spend most of their time having to fill the roll. It gets hard to separate being human from being ninja…you’re still young ann, and I know now you have seen some stuff…but don’t hold that against yourself…I know that if you truly had the choice you wouldn’t have picked it.
With no response from her, he looked down to find her fast asleep
