Introduction

It’s been ten years since the earth ran out.

We didn’t think it could happen, and secretly knew it would. Even so, we did nothing to stop it. Humanity found yet another way to screw itself over.

Before I was born, back when my grandmother was middle-aged, around the advent of nuclear-powered goods, the world was a “perfect place to be.” You barely had to lift a finger, much less get off your a** to do anything. Humans lived in a cheap and easy world, always seeking a new way to stay idle for the longest time possible. Consumerism was what kept our economy alive, while the dwindling number of producers struggled to keep up. The population thrived.

There is where the records stop. No textbook or netsource will give any evidence that our world wasn’t always sitting atop its filthy throne. No document ever wrote of the years our little utopia began circling the drain, nor will they ever.

Once humanity’s resources started drying up, vicious markets evolved, harboring primal gang-like violence and creating fear. The frightened will go to extremes just to return to some form of normalcy. The growing fight for our survival even ran deep into as so-called flawless government. That’s when the war started.

I think the world must have forgotten how to live off the land without destroying it. With no thought to giving back the things we took from the generous Earth, we decimated all. Humans are a selfish race, and now instead of salvaging the remaining life in the aging earth, we fought.

Humans, such violent creatures...always fighting. Now our actions were being reciprocated upon us, and we didn’t know what to do. I mean, it wasn’t our fault. It never is.

The world was dying around them. Countries were being bombed, destroyed over disputes that were easily solved, and not accelerated by such thoughtless violence. People don’t think. Or, at least they don’t seem to. I know they do, but they never…

More than anyone, I know people think.

So why don’t they use it?

Ever since the advent of nuclear power, and the war, people have been being born with differences…nuances in human ability, mutations, powers, whatever you want to call it. The point is, it was ******** us up, and all the government did was try to sweep us under the rug. They were ashamed. They were afraid of what was different. We were different. They were frightened of us. “At least they’re not dying,” they said. “Why should attention be brought where it isn’t due? These are trying times. We need to focus on survival.”

It wasn’t common, but these “nuances” did occur. Slow exposure seemed to be building immunity to the effects of our nuclear godsend (according to those very few scientists who actually cared), causing the mutations to be few and far between. It rarely caused death. That part was true.

So we add up the factors: a war-ravaged, dying earth, overpopulation, under-resourcing, “mutants,” an advanced technology…the government thought up their miracle solution: terraforming.

I don’t know exactly how terraforming works, but within twenty-five years, two planets had been transformed to become livable to humans. First came Mars, home to the first evacuees, then Venus, with more to come that would take many more years in relation to their current livability.

Earth was voluntarily evacuated to prospective pioneers. But really, who would want to live on a dying planet? A promising new life on a promising new planet was just the kick we needed, apparently. Whether it was a temporary solution to war, the answer to overpopulation, or just a new place to start draining resources from, I guess I’ll never really understand. Maybe it was all three.

Not everyone left, though. There were people who wanted to live simply, who wanted to live freely, free from discrimination of cruel governments and ignorant people, free from violent instigators…those who believed in the Earth.

We stayed. The Anomalies stayed.

Now we either save the world, or destroy it.
