Remembered, Experienced, Scryed
The Past
Violet eyes gazed out a large window. Trailing the endless snow, his eyes fell on the ice crystals clinging to the wreath on his neighbor’s door. Yamashita Yue watched disgustedly as people drifted to his own brilliantly lit entrance. From his position by the window in his silent room, he could hear the loud rambunctious sounds of celebration in the parlor.

Reaching into his desk, the raven-haired boy extracted a photo. The noise of the party faded as he revisited the past sealed in the black-and-white image taken months before. In the dark room, the moon’s light revealed the beloved memory of the eight-year old. With a gentle smile, his mother draped an arm on his shoulders while her other hand caressed her protruding stomach, obviously well into pregnancy.

An unwanted tear splashed onto the treated paper. Yue angrily rubbed away the moisture. He refused to show his vulnerability, even with only the moon to see.

A month before the baby was due, a complication arose. The placenta began detach itself, putting both the mother and unborn child at risk. The doctors attempted to save both lives, however, the problem was discovered too late. Yue’s sister was a stillborn. His mother never fully recovered from the ordeal; her condition was weak due to excessive bleeding. Weeks of struggle later, she joined his sister.

Despite his wife’s death weeks before, Yue’s father was determined not to show moments of weakness and staged an elaborate Christmas feast.

Yue scorned the pathetic attempt to act as if grief had not taken over their lives. He knew as the life flickered out of her eyes, so had the light in his heart. Determined never to feel the pain of loss again, Yue closed his bitter heart tightly. Although it still pulsed with life, his heart was frozen in death.

The Present
“Yamashita-san, what happened back there? You‘ve failed to retrieve one of the souls despite your months of experience? You should‘ve gotten this down by now!”

Yue unconsciously clenched his jaw and remained silent. Was it truly his fault that one of the souls from the plane crash in the mountains refused to go? The spirit’s last words before disappearing into an abyss were, “Only she can set me free.” No mention of who “she” was or where “she” was could be found. Humans and their inability to let go of their past… He wanted to growl in frustration.

He craved to argue his side but repressed the urge. In a mission where all the spirits were clinging to their past, which was an extremely odd coincidence, Yue was the only one to lose a soul. Arms by his side, Yue bowed deeply. He apologized profusely for his mistake and swore it will never reoccur in an even voice despite his turmoil thoughts. Failure was not an option.

The Future
A rapist was on the loose; no matter how hard the shinigami tried, he always eluded capture. It wasn’t the only strange fact in this case: this rapist was reported to have committed crimes around the world within hours of each other. Was this a supernatural human? There wasn’t enough information.

Yue managed to capture the outlaw before he violated another young woman. The shock and shame from the rape would have led to her suicide. Advising to find the leader, Ryo offered to hold down the perpetrator. Unfortunately, his leader found Ryo with the rapist, who launched into a fabricated tale of how he ensnared him.

Hiroki clapped his hand on the brooding Yue’s shoulder, “Stealing credit from newcomers is a hazing ritual for us. But it’s odd, someone should have joined our division by now.” It had been almost half a century since Yue joined. Until another shinigami entered Division X, he would remain the rookie. Tired of being blamed of other’s actions while they were recognized for his accomplishments, Yue came to his decision.

Fists clenched and darkened amethyst eyes flashing, Yue angrily turned away from his division. Away from his leader proudly praising Ryo for his “work”. From now on, he shall go under the name of Yami Yoru, a rogue shinigami. He would finally be acknowledged for what he does.

((I'll work this into the RP... somehow sweatdrop ))

Yue abruptly sat up on his bed, taking no notice of his sheets slipping down. Threading his fingers through his dark hair, he held his head.

What was that strange dream?

Swinging his long legs over the edge, he silently padded barefooted to the window. The light shone against his unclothed chest and his loose pajama bottoms drawn tightly to his hips.

That dream... He could remember snow, a dark room and a photo. Of what?

No matter how hard he tried, he could not recall what it was. This is the fogged past of any shinigami. But it didn't prevent him from getting a headache trying to figure out the cryptic pieces.

Gazing out the window, Yue's mind drifted. The vision of the grounds, soon becoming familiar, comforted his raw nerves.

Yue jolted and the words abruptly died upon his lips. Holding a hand to his mouth, as if he could no longer control his own voice, he wondered, 'Why does this melody sound so familiar?'

Leaning against the wall, he turned the lyrics over in his mind again, trying to translate them from their original language.

It sounded so familiar... Soothing, comforting... like the arms of a mother.

"don't want to look back...?" Yue muttered. He slid down, his eyes suddenly shuttering close as he slumped against the wall.

:+:in his dream:+:

"Yue! Let's go~ Papa won't wait all day with the camera" a female voice teased. The mentioned boy tilted his head up; he was eight years old again. He sulked, not comfortable such formal clothes, and reluctantly trailed behind her.

"Ready?" a deep voice called.

"Almost! Ne, Yue-chan, you're going to be a big brother soon! When your baby brother or sister grows up, let's show this to them and say, 'We've been waiting for you for a long time!' Wouldn't that be a nice memory?"

Yue sullenly nodded his head. He wanted to make her happy but these clothes were stiff and they ITCHED.

She turned him around and rested her arm around his shoulders, "Now smile to be the light to guide them in their life."

The jet-haired boy looked adoringly up to his mother and a gently curve of his lips appeared.

Yue slowly opened his eyes. He dazedly saw his legs stretched out in front of him. These fainting spells were getting annoying. Luckily, they only occur when he's alone in his room.

The dream was different this time, but confusing nevertheless. They had yet to reveal anything that might substantially revive his memory. But does he truly want to know his human past?

Yue arrived in Meifu with only a name in his memory. He didn't even recall where he was originally from, although he could hypothesize somewhere in Japan. His mannerism was too similar for it to be a mere coincidence.

Over the last few decades, new memories replaced old ones. Yue was told that many shinigami would not remember their previous lives. Yet these recollections were surfacing in a disturbing rate.

He reached towards his toes, still seated against the wall. Stretching out the kinks in his body, he languidly rose from his position.

Yue drew his dark cloak and draped it onto his body. The silky feel of the material was reassuring and familiar, banishing the troubling thoughts away. While he wore it, he was recognized as a member of the Division X (a rookie, but still respected by others) not as a being of the afterlife speculating about his past.

Pulling open the door, he slipped out into the blinding white halls of the Division, greatly constrasting the darkness in his own room. Like the cloak, darkness was comforting. Although he did not dislike light, he simply prefered the shadows over the brightness.

With a click, the door was shut and he was off wandering the halls.

A note slipped off the table unnoticed a the gust of wind blew in from the door closing.

~~~
The Adjutant was a tall man. Clad in his dark violet robes, he towered over most, yet he was slim and to most eyes seemed the gentle quiet man, silently patrolling the halls. He was discreet and passes unnoticed, not feared nor acknowledged eventhough he held one of the highest position within the Division. But within the Division all serve one lord, hence he held himself humble.
He now made one his rounds. There were new Auras about. His work consisted the abundance in shadows as much as the work of the Secretary was infront of the Shinigami. Through the dark silent corridors of West wing, he felt a familiar tug, someone was walking the halls. Ashika slipped back his cowl, and brought forth a small orb of light, sending it up to spill its rays and warmth. "Yamashita......." he said quietly, "I trust you're on your way to the Division Hall."
He nodded and made to pass by the shinigami.
A book suddenly flipped open on his desk, pages turning from a nonexisting wind. Finally it came to a stop on a certain page.
Quote:
I had that dream again. The one where it was snowing and a boy was in his room, looking at a photo. I think that boy... I think that was me, when I was still a human.
I think back to it, and I have this heavy, lonely feeling. I want to cry but in the back of my mind, I have a man telling me that I should not expose my weakness to the public.
Why are these dreams coming back to me now? I've heard my seniors say that they do not remember their past...
A more gentle wind seems to turn the pages. Stopping a few pages ahead was this entry.
Today I saw the Adjutant. He was in the Hall of Elders, reading his papers. It seemed like a polite conversation, him asking me about the last assignment... And how I felt about moving into the Division.
I feel like he was looking into my very soul while I replied. It was unsettling, talking to such a respected senior. Especially while I'm still known as the rookie here.
I did notice that he was drinking red wine. I remember trying red wine once... It smelled strongly of rubbing alcohol and even tasted like it... After that experience, I swore never to touch it again.
But I wonder if the Adjutant thought I was foolish for agonizing over the wandering spirit. For some reason, I just cannot accept failure. Perhaps this is an effect of my human past? Just like how I cannot let others see my weakness?
Ah, perhaps I'm too quiet for my own good. I don't think I'm the type of person to question thing much, at least not aloud. I just hope I didn't leave a bad impression on him...
Again the pages turned, leaving at the latest entry
I found another shinigami while I was wandering the halls today. At first, I thought it was woman. With such long hair, isn't this what you'd first think?
But the way they moved when the person got back up told me I was wrong. When I looked closer, the arms seemed too toned to be a woman's.
He was strange. He looked like he was talking to himself while creeping up with his jacket as if to catch a small object.
I wonder if all shinigami are like this. Should I be afraid?!
The entry faded away, leaving a blank book. It seems to be magicked such that the innermost thoughts of Yue are recorded, without needing him to pen his thoughts. Without the permission of the owner, another reader cannot see the entries...
Another journal entry appeared in the book...
Quote:
Year: 07 Month: 01
I met another shinigami. This time it was a pale little girl. While I was playing the piano (another oddity I must elaborate on. But I digress...) in the music room, she suddenly appeared. Somewhat like the girl in that movie... The one adapted from Suzuki's book. The Ring, I think it's called?
Her name is Sayuri. She was very quiet and for someone so young, she seemed wise beyond her years. Her skincolor and pointed ears mark her demonic heritage.
She was also dressed in a tsukekage. It feels nice to meet someone with Japanese origins, besides myself.
Besides meeting this girl, I found the music room. Something was calling me there, I think... And for some reason, I could play the piano. And various other instruments, I suspect.
Playing an unknown (supposedly) instrument wasn't the only odd aspect of my day. A particular song was stuck in my head, which I somehow knew to be called, "Le Ciel". It's strange how I knew of such things that I cannot recall anymore.
I found a binder full of sheet music. Sheet music that were composed by myself, or with another person. Is this another reminder of my past?
With a controlled flick of his wrist, Yue tossed his cloak off his shoulders. The fabric made a muffled noise as it landed across a chair.
The suddenly loss of warmth made Yue shiver a little. In a few long strides, he crossed the room to a lacquered bureau.
He grasped the hands to the middle drawer and pulled. Inside were several neatly folded dark shirts. He snagged an article before sliding the drawer shut.
The silk was cool against his skin as he tugged the black sleeveless shirt over his head. The dark cloth covered his firm midriff as it was pulled down.
Yue briefly debated on what to do before settling to read a novel. Machevilli's The Prince, sounded interesting. Or perhaps Brown's Angels and Demons. He had heard raving reviews of both during his missions.
He sauntered towards his desk but paused when he noticed a small square of paper in the center of the floor. Bending at the waist, Yue reached for it with his curiousity piqued. When he straightened, the jet-haired shinigami carefully unfolded the creases.
Absent-mindedly sending a spell to light the room, Yue waited for his eyes to adjust before reading the note.
Small scripted writing unravelled across the cream colored paper, rustling lightly as if it was being written, right there and then.
Requesting a report of your failed mission. Await further instructions.
Adjutant Suki
And then more writing appeared, only for the eyes of the shinigami holding the note. It was attuned to his aura so will only appear if he read it.
Perhaps consider additional training, should you feel unease in your new position, Yamashita Yue.
