Narrow Pathways Shade OccupiedThe southern mountains of the vale are a good bit less explored than the northern ones. Paths do exist, they're just a bit harder to find. Narrow pathways snake up into the sky, keeping wanderers safe from the rather dangerous looking points and falls of the southern mountain. Though some of the paths seem to stray... Amendamenament sweatdrop : With the Plains below and the Cliffs above occupied, it doesn't take Einstein to figure out that this is a no go zone unless you're a Shade or on their side. Fortifications and traps have oozed out into this as well and these paths have been made into dead ends quite literally. There is now only one that leads a steady supply back and forth. The rest lead to NPC related doom.

A path, a safe, clear path. A bit narrow. It would be hard to march a company through... but it was safe and stable, from everything that Daniel could tell.
Stepping onto it, he took a seat, waiting for Al, Ben, and Con to get caught up with him again, and back in formation. His eyes scanned the sky, pistol at the ready, just in case an enemy air came in scouting...

"They are attacking the dam..." Con spoke up, the fourth set of words he heard the shade say. "They need people to cover the rook..."
Daniel shook his head, gesturing for them to form up again, "That's a long way from here. And four bodies won't make the difference... we should forge ahead, and figure just who, or what, made this trail."
The shades stared at each other, silent, mental communication passing between them. Finally Con spoke up again, "That is correct. We will follow."
Daniel nodded, "Trust me mates. We need to know what's here. It's right next to us... and I don't want an army knocking on the back door while we go out the front..."
He started to lead the company up the trail, another line phalanx fire team formation, each shade covering 90 degrees of the firing arcs.

"I can see something up ahead. A building maybe... a clearing..." Daniel told the rest of them, whispering it behind him, trying to remain as quiet as possible.
He gave the hand signal to move on, followed by the one he taught them for 'breech and clear'. Get up there, and secure the area.
He picked up the speed, charging up the narrow, one man at a time trail. It might be a death trap... but maybe he could catch anyone up there unawares. Besides, good leaders always lead from the front.

Back down the pathway. It was slow going, despite the clear trailway. Daniel kept he shades, and himself, on a leash as he took point. No use running, and tumbling down, or worse, off the trail.
So, three shades, and one man, walking around armed, in a column formation down the trail. Nope, not suspicious at all...

Ah, there it was, the point they had turned onto the trail. He saw it continued down farther... but no telling who, or what they would run into at the bottom. The narrow trail, the lack of manuevering space, it all pointed to vertical coffins to him.
Thus he turned the company back towards the Jagged Cliffs, where he knew it was at least relatively safe. Pistol ready, he kept his eyes, and ears perked for traces of the enemy.

Back on the narrow trail. Daniel breathed a sigh of relief. Despite the narrow, "Oh, just shoot us all one by one" dimensions of the place, he was happy for nice, solid ground beneath his feet.
He spared a look back, checking on his little contingent of shades. Just how did you tell if a creature of dark matter and magic was fatigued? Hungry? Hopeful?
Shaking his head, he waited for Ben to bring up the rear and get on the path.
"If you start to feel tired, let me know. Or if you need to feed on, well, whatever you feed on," Daniel used his nice, hard commander's tone. The "That's an order!" version. Even as he regretted not knowing more about what his men required.
That covered, giving them a steely gaze to make sure it sunk in, he started down the trail. Same Column formation, moving slowly, sticking to whatever cover they could get from the broken rocks, and trying to make a low profile. Spying eyes could be anywhere.

A long way, and they were nearing the end. Daniel looked about ready to kick himself. The plains ahead. Walking death traps. No cover. No hiding places. Just a killing spree. They didn't even need a trap at the bottom of the trail.
He signaled for the shades to stop. As they crouched down near the bottom of the trail he passed on some of the more complex signals. He would go in fist. Then Al and Ben would come, and split to either side. Con would bring up the rear. Cover him.
With a nod from each of the shades, he broke the little pow wow, and started down the trail. Five seconds behind him Al and Ben, three seconds behind them, Con.
