To Be

.::. General Information.::.

Name: Artemis
Alias: None
Gender: Female
Species/Race/Element: Moon
Born: About 16 years before the fall of the tower of Babel
Wand birth:11/27/05
Guardian: Ariel Mason
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Blue
Skin Tone: Caucasian
Distinctive Marks: Silver crescent moon on her stomach
General likes: Freedom, Wilderness, independence
General dislikes: Being caged, men, impurities
Hobbies: Belly dance, School
Abilities:

Invisibility/cloaking - Artemis can turn herself completely invisible including anything clothing on her. She used this a lot as a baby but it wont show again until Teen age where she will master it.
Dance - It is not really a power, more of an ability that was passed down from her previous life. Artemis is a very accomplished dancer and can master any move shown to her relatively quickly from teen stage on. As a child she still needs to learn the basics. This still transfers to gymnastics as well, as that is a form of dance.
Archery - Again, not exactly a power, just an ability. She is very talented with a long bow, this one is a natural talent, one she doesn't need to train initially, but one that wont show itself fully until end of teen/youth stage.
Transformation of other objects - She is limited to changing small items/things only into something found naturally. She also cannot change the life properties of the item/thing. Such as a rat she could turn into a plant, since both still live. Or a camera into a rock. She can't turn a cell phone into a plant or turn a mouse into a rock. The items remain small, not exceeding a laptop or small bolder in size, unless she hits sorceress. At which time she can handle much larger items. She also only gains this ability as a youth. It also takes a large toll on her strength until she is a sorceress.

Other notes on Artemis:

Her life is like the phases of the moon, at times certain abilities are most prominent (like dancing) but when they fade in her interest to peruse them, she maintains the ability, but also gains greater abilities that replace the old ones. Her life is about change and renewal, also understanding death and how the re birth process is only powerful due to death. She is adventurous and strong willed and wont stop until she had reached her full potential, no matter how long it takes.

Baby

Hair: None.
Favorite pastime: Sleeping ... during the day.
Moon Phase: New Moon
Abilities: Ability to vanish, like out of sight, when feeling threatened. (A flicker of a power to fully pronounce itself later)
Personality: she is just a calm little baby, who is slightly nocturnal
Appearance:
User Image

Toddler

Favorite pastime: Chewing on her wand, walking everywhere
Moon Phase: Waxing Crescent Moon
Abilities: Unsteady walking (she tries to do more then just walk)
Personality: Adventurous. There is a whole new world she has access too, and for some reason she thinks the best way to identify something is by shoving it into her mouth. She also sleeps a lot during the day, less at night, a habit Ari tries her best to fix.

Finding The Moon - Part One

"You want me to go WHERE?" Ianna screamed at her unseen daughter.
"The moon." came Matilda's voice, soft as silk and purring in Ianna's head as if there were nothing unordinary about going into outer space and traveling on a satallite.

"NO! NO NO NO NO NO! When I signed up for this gig, I didn't sign up for realm and space hopping. EARTH hopping, that's another thing. I may LIKE going to Paris, or Cairo, or...or...Hawaii or something, but THE MOON!? ARE YOU FRIGGIN NUTS?!"

There was a long silence. "That's to be debated. However, I need you to go to the moon. The first wand has began to awaken, and it needs you. I need you. Mother."

Ianna could almost feel Matilda smirk at her. She KNEW that when she used that word Ianna was putty in her hands...She never heard that title anymore...

"Fine...I'll g--" She didn't get to finish her sentence, but was immediately transported, without warning, to the moon.

"O...." Ianna looked around, though the first thing she noticed was...SHE COULDN'T BREATHE! She gasped for air, finding none, and panic rose in her.

MATTY! MATTY! ******** HELL MATTY I NEED OXYGEN! I AM NOT IMMORTAL! Ianna thought frantically. She felt light headed already, and began to droop.

"Oops." came the response, a pocket of air immediately wrapping itself around her.

"Bloody hell, Matty." she muttered, gasping for the air and greedily sucking it in. "This better last me."

Now that she could breathe, Ianna seemed a little more interested in where she was. The soft grey dust, the craters, and the millions upon millions of stars all around it. Oh! And the VIEW of the EARTH! It was amazing...

"I hate to interrupt, Ianna, but...Time is of the essence..."

Ianna snapped out of her daze and nodded her head, beginning her journey of searching for the wand.

After hours of fruitless combing of the moon's surface, and several refills of air, Ianna was close to giving up. "You sure it's here?"

"Of course I'm sure!" Matilda snapped indignantly. She was never wrong.

"Yeah yeah...But I can't--" she trailed off, a glitter of silver catching her eye. "Nevermind." she muttered, moving towards the staff of silver and moonstone which stuck out of a crater.

"See. I told you."

"Bite me." she hissed as she pulled the wand from the hole, dusting it off. "It's beautiful..."

"Yeah, it is...Pure silver and moonstone, quite expensive too. But it's more important than money." Matilda mused, never really getting the human concept of money, even when she was one. "It will be of the moon, when it emerges. And a looker too. Well, time to go home."

And so...Ianna was returned home, wand in hand, to find a home for the wand.

Finding The Moon - Part Two

Ianna sat grumpily in her shop. She knew that whoever was meant to find the Moon wand would be drawn into her shop by the wand's pull...but bloody hell! Did it have to take so long? She'd been waiting two weeks to find the right guardian, and so far, nobody had come in. She was getting anxious.

Silvery eyes darted to the left, the wand of the moon glinting in the very dim light of the shop. "Well, you'll have to wait a little longer, my friend."

Ianna's fingers trailed over the smooth metal of the silver wand handle and sighed, closing her eyes. She despised the fact she would have to give up her pretty trinket, but she knew that the wand, however pretty and shiny, was not hers to keep. She missed having a child around the house...Matilda had aged so quickly that it almost killed her. But...This at least, when she wasn't putting her life in danger to get the wands, was fulfilling enough.

She knew what would happen when the wand's owner came. They would be confused, wondering what led them to the dingy little dusty shop in the middle of nowhere. They would wonder why the hell they were there, and who the hell she was. And then, she would have them read from the book, just as a test to see if they truly were. If they weren't, she knew the book would stay closed until the real guardian came.

Her eyes opened to look at the old leather bound book laying beside her. "Yes, Thinking about you." she murmured, the book giving a shudder of appriciation. It wasn't forgotten in the hubbub of finding Moon. "I just wish we could hurry this up."

Ganty was walking home from here work, she was feeling weird all day allready and thought it would be a good idear to go home and sleep it out, she felt sick, but not realy sick at the same time. She was walking past closed stores and houses. She didn't pay any atention to any of the buildings untill somthing in here mind told here to look to here left. Ofcourse in that point of time she didn't that it was a wand that was leading here there, a lot spirit killed of somthing he believed in...

She looked left and noticed a small shop, in the display window there were small trinkits nothing special, nobody would notice this shop it was small and old, it looked open so Ganty walked to the door, she opened it. There she was standing in a dusty old shop looking face to face to a old lady not knowing why she even entered the shop.

If Ianna had known Ganty thought she looked like an old lady, she would have beaten her with the Book of Life and Death sitting before her. That is, if she even noticed her there.

She didn't, for quite some time, until the Book gave a rumble and Matilda mentally prodded her.

THATS HER THATS HER THATS HER!!!

All though it was strictly in her head and Ganty wouldn't be able to hear Matilda speak.

Ianna blinked. "Ow. That bloody well hurt my ears. Don't yell at me." she blinked yet again and lifted her head from her notes, noticing the girl walking into the shop. The book before her gave a little shudder..it was definitely her.

Brilliant eyes locked on Ganty's features and she nodded her head. "Welcome to Ghosts of the Past."

Ganty steped closer to the woman, now that she stands in the light she could see its not a old lady after all. She blinked when the woman looked up at here and sade the name of the shop
"Welcome to Ghosts of the Past." she mumbled
"What a strange name for a shop, could I ask you what you are selling in your little shop?"

She looked around saw a lot of shelves with books on them and wondered where they would be for. Again she looked at the woman, waiting for here responds.

Again she looked around, how could she be so rude!
"Sorry my name is Ganty, i was just wondering around the streets when i found this little shop and the window display doesn't really say what your selling"

Ianna smirked. The smirk was rather frightening, if you didn't know how half insane Ianna was at times, especially when Matilda was talking to her.

"Selling? Oh, we don't sell anything here. You see..." she paused. "Well, here. See for yourself." Ianna reached for the large leather book and pushed it across the counter to sit in front of Ganty. It immediately slammed shut. "You'll have to be able to open the book to read what we do here. If you can, you're set. If not, I must ask you to leave..."

Ianna watched quietly, patiently, and smiled

"Will you quit playing with her, Ianna! SHES THE BLOODY GUARDIAN!"

"I -know- that, Matilda. I'm not STUPID. But, You know the rules as well as I. She reads from the book or doesn't get her wand." Ianna seemed to be speaking to voices that weren't there again.

Ganty looked at the woman, she was smirking "What is she smirking about" she thought to herself and looked at the book, it was a old leather book, very large to. "And way would I read from a book if she wont even tell me what’s in the book" she started to wonder and looked again at the book. She stroked the book with one finger and it felt smooth, not ruff like most leather books. Something in here head was telling here to try to open the book, but she way unsure way she would do that.

She turned to the woman again and asked

"What's in the book? Way do you want me to read it?"

Ianna shrugged her shoulders. The minute Ganty had touched the book, the leather covers sprung open, pages flipping madly and causing dust to fly everywhere until it landed, as if turned by magic, on a specific page.

On this page rested a picture of the silvery moon wand which had been resting on the counter beside her. Under the picture in small print, though perfectly legible read:

"Moon. Wand ID 00000. A Soul has been trapped within the confines of the wand. Congratulations, you have become the next guardian to take on the task of raising it from infancy to greatness. We, Ianna and I, have the upmost faith in you to complete your task dutifully. Best of luck,

Matilda."

Ianna watched for Ganty's reaction as she leaned against the counter, the smirk never leaving her face. "Well? Got anything to say?"

After the book hade opened and Ganty just stood there for a few seconds, then she looked up at Ianna. "What...how...where...what just happened?" That was about the only thing she could bring out... "And ... and how is Matilda and what's this about a wand?! What is going on?" Here head started to feel light, she hade to sit down.

Ianna knew that the woman would react the way she did and simply smiled. "This wand." she indicated to the silver and moonstone based wand sitting beside her, "Houses a soul. One who died a miserable, horrible or wrongful death. It should not have happened. As a result of this, Matilda's spell....My daughter's spell...trapped her soul in the wand to give it a new chance."

Ianna paused and watched her before telling her Matilda's story, how she cast the spell, and that Ganty was the one chosen to be a parent to the child who would soon issue from the wand.

"So," She looked at the wand, it was very pretty nice silver with some kind of white crystal on the top "This wand houses a soul but...but why me? There are so many people out there that would do a much better job then me! I'm sure of it. And what will happen when this soul will come out of the wand? And where is your daughter now anyways?" She had so many questions she didn't know where to start. Was this really happening to her?

Ianna nodded her head a bit. "Nobody knows why a guardian is chosen, but they are. They're drawn here, and they don't know why. And the book can tell if you're supposed to be one." her fingers stroked down the spine of the large book, which gave a shudder of pleasure. "When the soul comes out, it will have 10 more stages of life. A Wisp, Baby Ghost, Human baby, toddler, kid, teenager, youth, adult, sorceress or sorcerer, and eventually, if they train, an Ancient. It's your job to act as if you were their parent.

Congratulations, Ms. Ganty. You're a mother."

"A mother?" Ganty blinked. She never really thought about being a mother and for sure not of a wand... "How long will it take for this wand to become a baby? And what should I do now with the wand? I have so many questions to ask you i don't know where to start! I never thought something like this would happen, are you sure something is in that wand? It looks like any normal wand" She looked at the wand again, every time she looks at is she feels warm inside. "Am I supposed to take it home now?"

Ianna chuckled at the barrage of questions. She was doing her best to be patient, but Matilda had been bugging her and reminding her to hurry up because she needed to go to Atlantis to receive the next wand.

"Yes, a mother. And I'm not sure how long it'll take your wand to evolve....This is the first wand found, other than my daughter's, and my daughter grew to ancient in two months...

They'll have an accelerated growth time..." Ianna paused and chuckled again. "But it won't be as fast as two months. Matilda changed that. I'm guessing...maybe a few months before the wand emerges through the first three stages and becomes a flesh and blood child." she looked to the wand and picked it up, handing it to Ganty. The moment she touched it, the tip would light up with a beautiful silver light. "It's awakened now. You can take it home."

Ganty looked at the wand when a beautiful silver light came from the tip of the wand "That's a long time" she responded "but I will do the best I can. Can I ever come back here and ask questions I might have later on when the wand is 'growing'?" She still couldn't really place the events that just happened, was this real? Can people's souls really but trapped inside a wand waiting for the perfect "mother or father" "I hope I can handle this" she looked again at Ianna. "I will do the best I can, I hoop to see you again one day"

Entering the Shop for the First Time

Receiving The Moon - Part Three

Kyrianna
"Hush little baby don't say a word..." Ianna sang softly, more of a prayer than anything else. The tiny moon baby not shut up since she was dropped off at her door step. It had never happened before, the leaving of a child, and it worried her that someone would abandon such a sweet thing.

Or, something that would be sweet when it shut up.

Finally, Artemis did quiet down and slip into sleep, causing Ianna to sigh in relief.

Done. Finished. SHE WAS ASLEEP...

Maybe the new guardian would show up today? Ianna vaguely wondered who would be pulled.

Faeyas
Ariel sighed as she stood up and wondered her room yet again. Ok so maybe camping out in a shop wasn't the smartest of plans, but it got her where she needed to be. Least so she hoped.

Something was differant today, normally she could easy work for hours stright without needing to stand up and pace in order to get her mind stright.

A walk.

A walk would help.

She slipped on her shoes and decided to explore the shop a little, see if she could get into the shop instead of just the lobby. Somehow, going there seemed rather important.

If it was enough to take away from her work, it must be worth at least a look.

Walking out, then locking her room, Ariel went into the lobby, where she saw the door to the wand shop was cracked. Inside she heard a melody, a song, like a lullaby.

Curious, she quietly stepped up to the door and pushed it open enough to sneak in. No one would know she was in there. The shelves hid her well as she snuck around trying to find the source of the melody.

It was a woman, kind, yet professonal....and she was holding a beautiful baby. Ariel was so mezmorized that she hardly realized that she had been slowly approaching the pair, until she tripped over a box and face planted right in plain vew.

"Oh ....umm...hello?" Ari hoped she wasn't in trouble...

Kyrianna
Ianna lifted her head and blinked, "Hello," she said softly, wincing just a bit when the noise made the child twitch in her sleep, "Do be careful, please, the little one just got to sleep..."

She stroked her cheek gently and smiled, "Left on my door step. One of my own returned..." she huffed softly at the thought and shifted in her seat, "You must be the new guardian. Why else would you be here this late?"

Yes, she must be the new guardian, because Artemis was getting warm.

Faeyas
Ari picked herself up from the floor and was attempting to pick up the mess she had made when she heard "Left on my door step."

Nothing else went through Ari's head except that one line.

"Left here? oh dear the poor little thing, is the baby alright? oh of course she's alright, I mean she's sleeping and..." Ari covered her mouth, realizing she was talking loud after having made that huge crash. "sorry." she whispered.

Then the rest of what she had said finnally made it into Ari's head and her eyes widened, "What do you mean...new gaurdian? Did her parents leave me, specifically the custody? I've never met them if that's it..."

Kyrianna
"No, no...She's fine, really, but no, her mother didn't know you." Ianna laughed softly, shifting Artemis gently in her arms and carefully holding the sleeping child over to Faeyas, "You felt drawn here, yes? Like something couldn't, or wouldn't, leave you alone? And the feeling went away when you got here?"

Silver eyes twinkled slightly in the dimmed light of the shop, "And it's quite all right. She'd just been crying terribly up until a few minutes ago."

Faeyas
Ari looked at the women like she was crazy, "Yeah I felt pulled here, I have since I first came here, but ... I dun know, it was like I couldn't sit still, so I decided to explore, the door was open, so I came in." She walked over to the lady and the baby, "At least she's calm, but what do you mean, 'gaurdian'?"Ariel knew she wasn't supposed to have come in here, but this lady, seemed to think that it was alright.

Kyrianna
"Take her, hold her. You need to, you know, since you're her new mother," Ianna's lips twitched slightly, "Her name is Artemis, and her element is of the moon. The wand there," she indicated to the silver and moonstone wand laying on her desk, "Is where she was born from. NEVER let the wand break. It will kill her," she took a deep breath.

"Most of all, bring her here often. There are other children like her. And she needs to know them."

Faeyas
The girl babe, Artemis was transfered to Ari's arms, as she held the baby gently, yet secure. The child felt so warm, and looked so peaceful as she held her. "She's beautiful...." Ari felt drawn to her instantly, and suddenly all the images from what happened around the shop came shooting back. Ari looked at the lady, "That's what those wands where, all those people here, are gaurdians arn't they? That's why I'm here..." while supporting the child in her arms, Ari picked up the moon wand and tucked it securly into her pocket, "I wont let it break, I promise to keep her safe...this is all just so sudden...."

Kyrianna
She nodded, "Aye. The guardian of this little one left her here. It was lucky she did it after the child was emerged or she would have never been reborn. Even now, it'll be a hard adjustment losing her guardian. I warn you, she may be fussy at first."

Ianna looked at the woman and child, biting back a small sigh, "You should get her home, though. I can explain more to you when you've settled in with her. But first, what's your name?"

Faeyas
The warning was a usual one, yes children were fussy. Ari was just greatful that this little one was allowed to live on as she was.

The question suprised her, no matter how simple. "My name is Ariel Mason." She held the child close, "I can come back once she settles, my room is just down in the boarding area of the shope, she needs things like a crib, I can get." It was just then that Ari realized there was little day light left in the day, "Can I come back tomorrow? would that be ok?" Ari looked at the lady, and then just asked, a questions he ahd been wondering for a bit of time, "What's your name? who are you?"

Kyrianna
"Ianna. A pleasure to meet you, Ariel. And yes, you can come back at any time," she smiled and gave a small bow, "As for me, I should go check on my daughter. I hope Artemis won't be too much trouble for you. Goodnight."

She slid off the chair she was sitting in and walked through the portal to the headquarters, closing the door, and locking it, behind her.

It was time to see if Coailiann had woken up yet.

Faeyas
Ariel was, shocked to say the least.

"Ianna!" she called, thinking that in her rush to see her daughter that the lady had forgotten that she had trapped Ariel in the shop by locking the door.

Great. Bloody great. Ariel sighed and rocked the child in her arms, "Let's see Artemis if your new mummy can remember how to pick locks." She really wished there was a place to set Artemis down, and suddenly there was like a silver/gray car seat next to the desk, "Well, that works." not questioning a life saver, she set Artemis in it and pulled out her picks that she picked up in Europe at one point.

Unlocking the main door took time but soon Ari was out. She went back to pick up Artemis and walked out with the child wand, and picks. The door open for them to leave.

But once they left the room, the door slammed shut behind them. Curious, Ariel set down Artemis and checked the door.

It was locked.

Fancy that.

"Ok Artemis, lets go to the store and pick you up a new, umm, necessities." And they left the shoppe and building for the store.

Artemis Growth - Faeyas

Eclipse

Changing The Moon - Part Four

Artemis had begun to sleep at night. It was such a wonderful change that Ari feared to break it. But she couldn’t keep her nerves still; Ari loved astronomy, and was well aware of most interesting occurrences. Tonight, she would witness something amazing.

She recalled her parents forcing her to bed at night, refusing her the opportunity to witness such an event as a lunar eclipse. Artemis would most certainly not be so deprived. Ari further validated this action with the fact that Artemis was a moon child. Little did she know exactly what was to come.

Artemis giggled as Ari changed her and gave her a bottle. Artemis had grown strong quickly, and was cruising along furniture already. Her sounds were starting to form clusters, and she appeared to be growing up. Artemis anticipated going to bed when Ari picked up the child at nine that night, and cried out in protest.

Ari smiled and rocked her, “Shh shh, I want to show you something.” Ari murmured so that the babe could hear. Gently and softly Artemis calmed down, realizing that they had not progressed to her bed room, and appeared to be going outside instead.

Artemis giggled. She loved being outside, especially at night. The soft air and the sweet smells always pleased her, but tonight was also a full moon, and that seemed to energize Artemis enough that Ari was certain the child wouldn’t fall asleep.

Ari sat on the semi wet grass of a near by field. The clearing gave a full view of the stars that night. They shone brightly, and shimmered and twinkled, as if laughing at some unknown secret. Artemis was playing with her wand shaking it up and down, giggling merrily as her head faced upwards.

The event was slow, something most children couldn’t sit through. Artemis, were she a normal baby would have been crying for lack of activity, crawling around on the blanket Ari had prepared instead of watching the sky. Artemis it proved, was not normal.

She gazed lovingly at the moon, giggling and shaking her wand. It was beautiful.

It was vanishing. Artemis quieted. She watched, not crying, not moving, nor making a sound as the moon was covered. This took a bit of time; it was not something that would happen over a minute or two. It took almost an hour or more until the moon appeared no more than a ring of fire in the sky. Ari watched the moon, holding the quiet Artemis.

Ari looked down occasionally; to be sure her daughter hadn’t fallen asleep. She hadn’t. The babe was focused intently, her eyes wide with wonder as the moon stood covered.

It remained this way for nearly two hours. So did Artemis. Ari had checked often to ensure that the babe was breathing, and doing alright. After all she had hardly moved or spoken.

Gently, as if coming out from behind a veil, the moon started to reappear. Gradually the moment of the moon revealed the silver light that was familiar. The ring vanished. This took time as well. Gradually as the moon became clear, Artemis had begun to move. She would hum every so often, or fiddle wither wand, as if energy was seeping back into her body. Her face went from stunned to amused to happy, slowly, as slowly as the moon.

She giggled as the final of the moon had been revealed. Her laughter was loud and merry. She chirped and called, and held her arm out, with her wand, as if trying to grab the moon.

Suddenly Artemis jumped up from Ari’s lap and waddled foreword, as if chasing the moon. Her steps grew more confident, and her pose more stable as she continued on until she was in the dead center of the field, her arms reached up to the clear sky, to the moon.

The shimmering light made Ari question as she watched black hair come forth on Ari’s head, and her arms and legs grow slightly longer and her balance perfected itself. The full moon looked down at Artemis, and she back up at it. The soft sweet smell of the night eloping the toddler and she giggled, and spun around in the field. Still slightly wobbly she fell a few times only to pick herself back up.

Ari didn’t know what to make of it. Her child appeared to have matured at least a year in the period of a few minutes. Artemis, unaware of the change simply held up her arms, grasping her wand, she pointed it at the moon, “MOON!” She called out and giggled, before falling onto the soft grass once more.

Ari quickly caught up with her daughter and lifted her up; Ari’s laughter joined Artemis’s as they made their way back home for the night.

At least, what remained of it.

To Remember

The Last Whore of Babylon

Artemis was born in Babylon, her family powerful, rich, and wealthy. She was also the only daughter to the family, with only one older brother. When she was only a baby she was called upon by the Priestesses of the Temple of Istar, who would later be called the Whores of Babylon, to serve in the temple as a Naditu, the second to the highest priestesses of the goddess. As high an honor as this was, her family could hardly refuse handing over their only daughter to the temple.

The Naditu were to remain childless and single throughout their lives, but many women ignored this. As Artemis trained, she gained reverence for the lunar goddess greater then that of any of her patrons, for she kept to the scripture, holding the words of purity and solidarity close to her heart as she honored the goddess. She learned the provocative belly dances of the temple priestesses, the many skills sacred to the priestesses of Istar, including trans-formative powers.

Artemis was always a strongly independent child; she loved to explore the woods, and took strong objection to being tied to the temple all day. She was also quite the perfectionist, mastering all the arts of temple life, dance, music, archery, magic, and scripture. The one aspect she disliked the most was the tradition of women who were to come into the temple and pay a man to have sex with them. This was meant to bring honor to the women in the eyes of Istar. Despite her dislike of this custom Artemis accepted it as what the goddess wanted from those who worship her. As a Naditu, Artemis took great pride in the fact that she was exempt from such customs.

As she grew in age, she grew in beauty. Her dances were renowned and asked for by a large portion of the populous. This made her fellow priestess jealous for no other priestess could catch the eye of men as Artemis could. She wore flowing grey cloth with teal accents, and silver veils for her dance. Her preferred metal was always silver, even if it was second to the powerful gold. She moved with a grace that many commented could rival Istar herself.

Whenever Artemis heard such a comment while dancing, she would falter, to show the goddess, who was probably eavesdropping, that she had no intention to rival her. On her sixteenth birthday, the harlots of Babylon decided to play a prank on her, an attempt to get Artemis to lighten up, and to soil her perfect purity.

It was a month before the rumored completion of the expansion of the temple of Istar. Later in history this temple would be called the great tower of Babel. There was a rush of women to the temple to pay men for their virginity. Artemis, just finishing up a performance in the temple grounds to honor the goddess, decided that it was a perfect opportunity to bathe in a pool she had found. She would purify herself to the goddess under the goddess's gaze to prove her purity and faith.

Overhearing Artemis's plans, one of the other Naditu's went to a man leaving the crowd. "Good hunter if I may?" she veiled herself to appear more mysterious, and important, "The goddess has told me that if you venture into the woods a good while you will find a moon pool. There shall bathe a woman for you." The Naditu smirked to herself as the man ran off to find his prize; Artemis wouldn't know what hit her.

In the pool of the moon Artemis had hung her dancing clothes on a branch of a near by tree, she slipped into the water bare and bathed under the clean waterfall from the cliff. The sky was clear and Istar was witness at the purification Artemis was performing onto herself. The man had come from no where, and Artemis was glad she had spotted him in time, she covered herself up and shouted to the heavens "Istar, my purity for you, protect me from this beast!" The man smirked.

"The goddess sent me here love." He spoke, he hands caressing her delicate skirt that hung on the branch. He couldn't believe his luck. Artemis herself was about to become his.

"If she sent you then this is a test. She is testing my loyalty to her." Artemis thought quickly as the man gathered up her clothing, his expression that of a child who had just gained a toy he wanted so dearly, a toy no other boy had. Artemis felt that she was surely this toy. "Put my clothes down you beast!" she ordered as if she held the most authority in the world.

"Women should be seen and not heard." He chuckled, putting the clothes into his bag. "So pure you hide from me priestess." His face twisted wickedly. "Istar won't save you, so here is a wager, I will give you back your clothing, if you marry me." His grin widened.

"If I refuse?" she couldn't even believe she was humoring this wild beast.

"You stay in this pool until someone else comes along or you die. Or you always could walk back to the temple nude." His grin grew, "I'm sure my offer sound appealing, so how about it?"

She looked up to the moon, closing her eyes she spoke, "I accept your trial goddess." She spit in the man's general direction. "I refuse all of your offers and options." She begun a chant and soon the man beside the tree was no more. Instead a Stag stood his place. "I hope this pleases you and my oath to you." Artemis, feeling herself somewhat dirty from the exposure she had to endure yet powerful and pure from completing the trial, rose from the waters of the pool. The full moon shone on her wet body, making it shimmer brightly, giving her a surreal form as she approached the stag. She picked up the bag and removed her clothing. She dressed quickly, leaving her wet hair down.

She turned to the stag, "By morning you will regain your normal form, forgetting your time as a stag." And she left.

When she came back to the temple, the same Naditu who had sent to the man after Artemis questioned her "Are you pure?" she smirked.

Artemis noted the amusement in the Naditu's voice, "My bath by the light of Istar proved trying of my purity, but have no fear, I remain as pure as the light from the moon." She then went to bed, leaving the Naditu red from shame.

At this time the priestesses had begun to leave the temple. The people of Babylon had started to travel the world, venturing north east west, and even to the desert south. Few remained for the holy rite of Istar, a yearly sacrifice to the goddess, which would lead to a birth, and renewal of the world and love. It was one of the most important practices of the priestesses. This year, Artemis was chosen to perform the sacrifice. A long silver bow, created for the sacrifice, and brilliant silver arrows adorned her body as she walked to the pool to purify her body before the ritual. When she left the pool and was entering the city she noticed that things were as far from right as could be. The city was burning, and the temple was being destroyed. "No!" she cried and ran as quickly as she could to the temple.

When she arrived, all the remaining priestesses who had not left were all dead and lying in the temple, their blood turning the white Marble a deep red, the red of anger and sorrow. The pain and fear Artemis felt had her so scared she fled the temple, which fell once she had reached the near by market square. The falling of the tower, the temple of the great goddess Istar of Babylon, would be remembered for centuries after. The tears and grief Artemis was feeling, gave her strength. Of which she needed once the sons of the one god had spotted her. Their war had reached Babylon, a common irritant to all three factions. The result lay in the destruction around her.

"A priestess of the savage faith, destroy her!" one had shouted. A language she had never heard before, but she understood the threat of a sword pointed at her body. She ran, all around the city, her bow notched in hand, and her arrows slung on her back. The thin material of her belly dancing outfit made movement easy, but it was also easily torn. Her sandals protected her feet from the rubble as she ran. As men approached her she fired arrows at them, killing whoever she aimed for.

It was soon for naught as she was quickly cornered by the large warring factions in front of the Temple where she had started. "Kill the whore!" a chant that meant nothing to her own ears, except to condemn her to death. A man with a large sword approached her.

"Stay back!" she shouted, notching an arrow. She was afraid; she knew she did not have enough arrows for them all, even if she wasted none.

"Become my wife and I will save you from death," a man, different from the previous one who had proposed to her approached. "I will make you a good wife." He spoke her language at least. But her purity meant more to her, so she spat at him.

"The goddess tested me once and I passed, this will be no different!" she called to the sky, to the broken city, "I refuse to marry an animal like yourself, My purity is my greatest treasure and gift to Istar, I shall hand it to no man," she pulled back her arrow, and fired.

The man fell before her dead. For the sake of maintaining the rite, she began to speak over the man, "For love is the greatest and most powerful of all things, when lost it will be reborn again, stronger, and purer then before. But it must always be reborn, like the moon grows full then shrinks to nothing. Nothing is forever, nothing is lost forever!"

A man approached her from behind and beheaded her. "Shut up you whore." And he spat on her body.

Like the saints to come, great persons of old gained almost surreal forms in the societies who had early on witnessed them. The man who Artemis had turned into a stag that night had witnessed this, all of this. When he returned to Greece he told a tale of a woman named Artemis, a daughter of the moon, an independent woman who valued her purity above the love of a man, who was a huntress with perfect command of a bow, and who had once turned a man who had spotted her bathing in a pool, into a stag.

He told the story of the last whore of Babylon, but she had become a goddess when it was recorded. Despite not trying to challenge her goddess, in the end she had.

But as her spirit had departed her body on the steps on Istar's temple, a strong magical pull tugged it to the moon, where it formed a staff to reside in until one day when it would be found by a woman sent to the moon by her daughter to fetch it.
