Hidden Item Hunt The Lantern Festival continues in this thread. As the sun begins to sink toward the horizon, Tempesti clears her throat softly to draw the attention of the guests assembled. “If I read correctly, during the Lantern Festival the ancient Tempestines believed that the spirits would guide them to items they’d lost during the year. I haven’t seen any spirits here, but in the er, spirit of the tradition we’ve hidden some Tempestine trinkets around the city for you to find.” Summoning a stack of papers from her subspace, Tempesti sets them on the table closest to her. “I’ve drawn up a few maps of the city, they’re pretty simplified but I circled the locations that are important here and we hid the items along the main paths that lead to each one. It’s less than a mile in each direction so it shouldn’t be too much of a long walk.” She glanced around briefly before continuing, "Once you finish up, we'll meet at the river docks by the bridge near the Great Library." Quote: Please roll 2d20 for your posts and note the direction in which your character is traveling. The first roll will determine where your character finds their item and the second will determine what they find. Feel free to use articles of clarity or similar items for a +1 bonus to your second roll. If you have more than one such item these bonuses will stack. Though I will put up the main second post in 48 hours, please make sure that you quote me when you roll and I will quote you as quickly as I can with what your character found and where they found it. You are welcome to fill in your post before I reply if you like and respond to the results after. Please include this at the top of each post, thank you! (Click for Larger Image) Map With Sans Serif Font Toward the Great Library (West)The westward path to the Great Library of Keraunos passes through what was once one of the capital’s wealthier neighborhoods. The streets have an air of abandoned beauty. Colorful floral mosaics edged with small golden tiles adorn the sidewalk and greenery spills forth from untended gardens. In the waning daylight a soft, warm glow emanates from crystals within tall glass streetlamps. The distant spires of the palace complex are visible on a hill to the north, its stained glass glittering with the sinking sun. To the west you can see the Great Library. Though its design isn’t as large or elaborate as the palace complex, it bears the same skilled and careful craftsmanship in the botanical motifs carved into its stone and the semi-circular façade divided into three large, pointed arches. Its bronze and glass doors are adorned with images of snake-like animals with vibrant blue and purple scales and flanked by tall, dark stained glass windows. Tall, wrought metal lampposts stand on either side of the door, each bearing a hanging, multicolored lantern in the shape of a many-pointed star. Toward the Capital Docks (East)The walk toward the Keraunos Capital Docks follows a path toward the southeast, passing through what was once a row of small shops. Though their designs are by necessity much simpler than those of the wealthier areas of town, many of them bear less complex carved designs on their narrow pillars and a few have simple colorful stained glass in their window frames. Eventually the street curves downward toward the water. A stone guardrail, crumbling in sections, edges the ramp which offers sweeping views of Keraunos Bay and the rocky islands in the deep blue water. On the largest of these islands stands a tall, pale tower with a beacon at its apex. The cool spray of the water intensifies as visitors reach the bottom. Tiny crabs with sparkling shells scurry among the scrubby vegetation at the sandy base. On the western edge, weathered stone and wooden boathouses flanked by docks and the bobbing forms of small boats as they begin to reemerge from their watery graves. Ancient market stalls line the eastern edge. Sand has long since invaded most of these once bustling docks, with local fauna taking the place of ancient mariners and merchants. Toward the Tower of Aniketos (South)The southern path toward the Tower of Aniketos crosses the river Naiara via a large bridge of carved white stone that arcs gracefully over the deep blue-green water. Slender balusters form the railings that line the wide road. Slightly raised footpaths separate the visitors from the wheel-worn stones in its center. Pale purple lanterns punctuate the railings, their shapes reminiscent of buds just beginning to open. Upon reaching the other side, characters find themselves in what appears to be a residential neighborhood. The presence of a number of what appear to be barracks and the uniformity of the houses mark the area as the likely home for the Tempestine military and associated workers. To the south, the monumental walls of the ancient city come into focus, massive bronze gate marking each entry point. The Tower of Aniketos itself stands at the end of an uphill road. Standing on a sheer cliff, the weathered fortress remains imposing. The architecture is markedly different from the rest of the city, dense and heavy, its design less refined but arguably more imposing. Toward the Guildhalls (North)The northward path toward the Keraunos guildhalls passes through what was once a mercantile district. Shopfronts display the remains of their wares, and the occasional crumbling wall reveals the inner workings of ancient workshops and kitchens. Many of the buildings seem to have living quarters above or behind whichever business they house. Though the presence of so many workshops makes it clear that the priority of this area of the city was production and commerce, the numerous parks and gardens indicate that leisure also played an important role here, as does the significant number of what appear to be restaurants and taverns. Trees line much of the road, and as visitors get to the guildhall, they may notice that the buildings grow more ostentatious, the trees grow larger, and strings of small, colorful lanterns hang from their branches until they reach a large plaza surrounded by tall, ornate buildings. Each bears an emblem which sits proudly above elaborately designed doors. It is clear that whichever guilds called this place home, they wanted to ensure that their wealth and power were immediately recognizable, even after centuries of neglect.

He was not proud of how much relief was in him as soon as he was afforded an excuse to be somewhere else - somewhere that wasn't looking around at everyone busily bent to their lanterns (his own still blank; it was best that way, maybe). But the relief was there anyway, and it followed him as he chose a direction more or less at random - and what other way was there to make such a decision? - and pursued it. A nice stroll in good weather was always a good way to dislodge the ol' mental and emotional cobwebs, and since the brain spiders had been spinning with gusto all morning, he had a lot of dislodging to do.
He tried to reframe the emptiness of Tempesti as quiet; tried to reframe his own lack of company as peaceful. This had almost worked when the peace was decidedly cut up by the alarming arrival of a horrible Thing, which at first startled an undignified yelp out of him - morphed into a cough; he really, really needed to kick the habit - and then, on examination, produced a weak sort of laugh.
Sure. A giant fairy chicken might as well exist, and it might as well be helping him out in his hunt. Why not? The fact that it steered him towards something in the shape of a bar felt like it might be a sort of cosmic poultry subtweet, but he ambled obligingly over, reaching out with an uncertain hand to pick up the cup and discover the bag under it. The cup fell over; the resultant noise startled a sudden movement in the corner of his eye, and Maus was once again made Not Proud: this time by the fact that he instinctively moved to power up before realizing he already was, and also by the realization that it was nothing but some small little creature fleeing from him in the way that everything and everyone with any kind of sense seemed inclined to do.
He gave it an exasperated look as it fled, feeling both insulted and ashamed, and then turned it on Hildegard as if this was also, somehow, her fault, before emptying the bag into his palm. It was a pretty thing - not necessarily to his usual taste, but not outside of it, either - and he turned it over in his hand, testing the tiny hinge and clasp, and then held it up towards the horrendous chicken between his fingers.
"Thank you," he said, feeling that this was only polite. "I don't know if you're being clever taking me to a bar and giving me a new stash box, but if you are, fair play, I guess."
The little wisp of light emerged from his hood as he said this, and he playfully - gently - tried to snap it up in the box. Somewhat to his surprise it did not desert him (perhaps sensing his somewhat fragile state of feeling), and instead settled next to the prize in the palm of his hand.

It was not a surprise when Joy manifested a magical guide and assistant. This seemed like the universe doing what it ought to do, and supplying her with what she wanted when she wanted it. The fact that it came in the form of a hilarious sparkly chicken was an additional bonus, and while Joy sometimes grit her teeth at all the damn Whimsy, today she was feeling indulgent of it and just about everything else.
"Hello, darling," she sang out to the chicken. "Give me a hand, will you? Or a beak, or whatever." But she hadn't even managed to get the request out before Hildegard was of her own accord leading her attention to the beautiful figurehead of an old boat, which Joy paused to admire. It reminded her, a bit, of the Garde - the dragonflies and the boats and the serene green-speckled water - and so it was not surprising when she opened the bag and found within it something not only to her taste, but that seemed like it would have been at home there as well.
She would have to ask Tempesti, later, if the figure depicted anyone specific. But it was enough for now to have found something that appeared to be a celebration of a beautiful woman - the sort of celebration Joy, as a beautiful woman herself, could always get behind.

lizbot glanced over the Creedence thing to make it so you can tag however is ez for you lol As usual, Alekto - who had not all that long ago sworn that she wouldn't be bossed around by that damn cat anymore - stood there and waited for the damn cat in question to pick a direction for them to go. Having obediently turned herself in the direction of what Creedence suggested might be money (with a skeptical expression behind her veil), she did at least manage to separate herself enough to hunt mostly alone. Having thoroughly demonstrated her total ineptitude for arts-n-crafts back there at the lantern table - and having only just had the self-awareness to avoid making a slash movie joke of her lantern at a festival meant for memorializing, like, the actual legitimate genuine dead - she was glad to turn her hand towards something else, although she wasn't feeling optimistic that she'd be doing any better at an item hunt. She'd been to a few escape rooms. She had not been the most useful member of the team at any of them. What was she even looking for? A big red X on the ground? Dotted lines to follow? A secret code to break? She hoped not that last one. All she could do was try and be perceptive, losing herself in the examination of all this zombie scenery - dead, shambling along in some semblance of life, she thought with a strange feeling of guilt - and trying not to think about Creedence's suggestion that she might one day be responsible for reviving the festivals of some other dead planet, whose people had long since ceased to be remembered and who could be remembered by no one but herself. Which meant that she was distracted when Hildegard made her dramatic entrance and startled a little scream out of her, which trailed off into a somewhat hysterical laugh. "False alarm!" she sang out, just in case anyone had heard that scream and was even now on their way to what would be an embarrassingly unnecessary rescue. "Holy s**t," she whispered to herself, waiting until the chicken had lost interest enough to wander away from the bag Alekto had spotted near her awful feet. She emptied it into her palm, then held the little trinket up between her fingers, watching the light shine through its colored wings and crystalline body. She was surprised, then, when it glowed just as a firefly ought, and she turned it quickly, thinking that it must only be a trick of the light in the facets - only to find behind it a little mote of light hovering. She held out her hand to it, and it alighted on her fingers, weightless, as if examining the trinket. It had a certain restless energy to it, and she wondered if it was about to start barking orders at her, Navi style. Just what she needed: another annoying Spirit Guide, or whatever. An attempt to shake it off yielded no results, and in fact it seemed to convey, without face or body language to do it, a stubborn insistence on remaining exactly where it was. "Don't get any ideas," she warned it.

With a squawk, a bizarre entity materializes in a shower of sparkles. The creature resembles something like an unholy chicken with fearsome eyes and lovely fairy wings. Turning her head toward you, she pecks around a bit before drawing your attention to an overturned cup on the bar of what appears to be an outdoor seating area for an ancient tavern. Examination turns up a brightly colored bag. As you pick it up, you bump the cup softly. The sound startles a small, weasel-like animal with soft fur in a gradient of purples and oranges. With what appears to be a judgmental glare, it scurries into the open doorway and vanishes into the shadows. Upon opening the bag Maus will find a small, round stained glass box with a colorful floral motif. Rejam Multiples of six in either roll summons Hildegard. Through the power of nosiness, she grants a +1 to your second roll

As you reach the end of the bridge you see an old gondola tethered to a small dock. In a puff of sparkles Hildegard the Horrible Fairy Chicken appears, flapping toward you before diverting her attention to a bag hanging just within reach from a figure of a winged woman adorning the prow. Among a cluster of aquatic plants you see several dragonfly-like insects with pointed wings and hooked tails. Their exoskeletons shimmer in shades of green and purple as they dart about in search of prey. Upon opening the bag, Joy will find a small wooden figurine delicately carved into the form of a woman with feathered wings. The wings and dress are inlaid with an unfamiliar material that give them an iridescent sheen.

As you walk down the cobbled street, your foot bumps a loose stone out of place just outside of an overgrown garden. In the space beneath you find a brightly colored bag. Upon opening the bag, you find a colorful plique-à-jour brooch in the shape of an iridescent dragonfly-like insect in shades of green and purple.

Character: Ekstrom Direction: North Ekstrom picked up a map for herself and studied it briefly, debating the encircled options with a surprisingly quiet (but no less excited) curiosity. Each one drew her interest in some way or another, and in equal measure. Once she realized this, she decided to take a more methodical approach. She would start at the top, and if there was time (and Tempesti didn't mind), she could then make her way down and stop at each one along the way. With her mind made up, she turned and headed north.

Strings of colorful lights hang between several of the trees lining the main road. Hanging from one of them you find a brightly colored bag. If you look up, you see a small bird with metallic blue feathers, a green plume on its head, and beady bright orange eyes watching you from the upper branches. Upon opening the bag, you may be surprised to find a small figurine delicately carved out of polished wood to resemble a curious looking bird with a large plume on its head. It is painstakingly painted in shades of metallic green and blue. The live bird lets out a squawk, perhaps offering an opinion on its wooden counterpart. itspao_ This was a genuine coincidence with my roll tables and I'm happy it lined up this way.
