Branching RP

Quote:
Prompt 1: The group has split up; while a large number of people remain in the storage wing, you have decided to help clear out some of the smaller rooms. Things are packed more securely here, and while there are some oddities on display, for the most part everything is secured in an array of wooden, stone, or metal boxes of varying security. You may see a strange item here or there, or something that catches your eye. There is an undeniably weird hum of energy in the room but Almadel has trusted you to behave.

While you must stay in the area, you can investigate anything. You can PM The Space Cauldron or DM xigglet on Discord if you want to check anything before posting; you can also ask if you can interact with anything or gain extra information about something your character is involved in. It is possible to find an artifact or relic that is some way important or relevant to your character but you must have permission. If you are interested in finding something, please be prepared to give a physical description and any relevant lore; we can work things out with you.

As you investigate, you hear a strange noise. Roll a 1d4 to locate it.
If you roll 1 it is coming from an air vent
If you roll a 2 it is coming from a storage box
If you roll a 3 it is coming from the wall
If you roll a 4 it is coming from under the floor

You can decide how to get to them; you may be fortunate and find a loose tile but you may have to break something to reach them (at player choice). Just remember that Almadel wants his museum in the best condition possible…

Quote:
Prompt 2: You have located the sound–Kosopods, ranging from six inches to two feet wide. They are hard shelled isopods with many legs and prickly tails. They can be nearly any neutral color, it just depends on what they have been eating. They will immediately try to scatter. Roll 1d4 to determine how many Kosopods you have located; you can decide their size.

Quote:
Prompt 3: The Kosopods immediately attack. They are frantic and hungry; they can spit acid that causes agitation and eventually burns through things and they have many sharp legs and sharp points on their shells. They can bite. Their shells are very hard and they can only be damaged by flipping them over to expose their delicate underbelly or possibly by overwhelming them with magic. They cannot be starseeded. They are vulnerable to fire but it might not be a good idea to start setting things ablaze if you want to stay on Almadel’s good side. Roll 1d4 to determine how many Kosopods you have defeated; if you roll lower than the last prompt, you will need to roll again until you defeat them all or hope that your allies rolled high enough to take out some of yours as well. If you roll a higher number here than you did in prompt 2, you can help your allies.

Quote:
Prompt 4: Once the Kosopods have been defeated, you can take a moment to breathe. It sounds like things have calmed down outside in the large room that you arrived in. You can look around the area if you like (and if you sent anything in to find or examine, you can identify it now. It may be possible to steal small items from Almadel if you have sent in for approval). This post can be considered an exit or you can continue roleplaying until you are ready to leave. You can rejoin the closing post of the ORP when it is announced! This should be on Friday the 30th. While you do not need to have this RP finished at the time of the close, please try to close this RP promptly! You must write 500 words in this RP to be eligible for the prize!

Ephesus “Effie,” Knight of the Moon

“Hello?” Ephesus called as he carefully peeked into one of the smaller rooms. He was pretty sure no one else had ventured into it yet, and hoped that there wouldn’t be too many of those bugs they were supposed to be getting rid of.

“I think this room might be good to check out,” he said, although he didn’t sound very sure of himself. He was still with Amarynthos and Ekstrom at least. He didn’t know if there were others he knew there, but it was too dark to really figure it out with ease. And too much stuff to try and look around. And he was on the shorter side, anyway. Maybe if Mary or his parents let him ride on their shoulders but… no, that would be too much.

“I bet Mercury must be pretty nice when it’s summer here,” he commented with a warm smile at Ekstrom.

He couldn’t smile for long, because he heard a strange noise and practically jumped into Mary’s arms. “Do you think the Kosopods would like some granola?” he squeaked, looking around with wide, fearful, but also curious eyes.

Ekstrom followed close behind the two knights, hoping she’d be of some help should they encounter any of those bugs. She hated bugs, but she was determined to fight every instinct to run away. She at least had her trusty frying pan; it’d served her well so far, hopefully it would continue to do so here.

“Seems okay,” she said as she carefully reached out toward what looked like a wall. “And it is, actually! A bit like stepping into a walk-in freezer, times like…maybe a hundred or something.” She smiled as well, hoping to lighten the mood some.

Her efforts were dashed to bits by the strange noise. Like Ephesus, she started, and was suddenly much closer to the other two than she had been prior.

“Or jerky…I might have one or two sticks in my pocket.”

Amarynthos, Knight of the Moon

Amarynthos seemed like he was ready to scoop Ephesus up even without being asked. If he wanted to ride on his back, Mary could do that, too. He wasn’t afraid of Kosopods, even if he didn’t really understand them.

“Well, if they’re hungry, I think we have things a lot tastier than…” he peered into the room and squinted. “...Stuff. I mean, at least ours is food.”

He had a subspace full of snacks that he was willing to share.

“Your granola’s pretty good. And jerky sounds good.”

He glanced over his shoulder at Ekstrom and noted that she seemed to be radiating discomfort. “You don’t like bugs either, Ekstrom? It’s okay, let’s stay close. I don’t know what sort of plan we should be, but. Well–how about this.”

He pulled out some of the snacks from his subspace–cookies, a few energy bars, some crackers. He started opening the packages and tossing them around the room. “Maybe they’ll come out for food and we’ll be able to see them before they get too close. Do you guys have a plan for what you want to do? I mean, I can squish bugs. Especially the ones that are destructive. I just want to make sure we’re all on the same page when things start happening.”

Something skittered above them, and though he couldn’t immediately see it, it was pretty easy to assume by the strange metallic sound above their head that something was in the air vent.

Ephesus, Knight of the Moon

Ephesus squeaked again when they heard something skittering through the air vent, and immediately clung to Amarynthos for safety.

Wait… no, he shouldn’t be hindering him, especially if he was going to be squishing bugs. Oh no, this was a horrible idea. Effie wasn’t sure how he was going to manage.

“I can, um… help squish bugs too,” he offered, already looking like his expression was crumpling in misery. He could barely squish bugs at home, but!! They’d agreed to help! So he had to just… figure it out, right? It would be like a youma. Maybe. He hoped. It would just disappear when it was squished, right?

“It’s too bad we don’t have a big freezer here,” he sniffled a bit, trying to distract himself by thinking about how awesome Mercury was.

“Maybe if we could slow them down they’ll be easier to catch-- oh… I mean squish. We can’t exactly put them outside, can we? I don’t think they’d do well on the Moon…”

Ekstrom, Page of Mercury

The sound of skittering overhead sent shivers down her spine, and as she processed the idea of kosopods falling down and potentially landing on their heads the color began to drain out of her face. She looked like she was going to be sick, though she managed to hold things together well enough. It helped that there were two others with her, and that they were younger. Not that she felt she had to save face, but they were kicking her big sister instincts into action.

Glancing to Mary, she saw what he was doing with the food he had on hand so she did the same—tearing the jerky into several pieces and tossing them about the room.

”A giant freezer would be awesome right about now,” she said, offering Effie a small, hopefully comforting smile. He looked about as thrilled as she did when it came to these bugs. “Or a giant oven, or a giant cage.”

When she finished tossing the jerky around she looked up again. The skittering seemed to get worse…

”I have a frying pan so I can play a little whack-a-kosopod, too, if it comes to that,” she offered, though if it was one frying pan against who knows how many, that might not be all that helpful. “If we could find something to contain them, maybe, or just a way to keep them from moving around so we can squish them more easily? That might things a bit easier…”

Amarynthos, Knight of the Moon

“Effie, you don’t have to squish any bugs if you don’t want to. I know how you feel about it. You can just be my eyes. It’s kind of dark over here and I can’t see very well.”

But, he followed the sound of the skittering above him–right to an air vent. It had stopped there, and for a moment the room was silent.

“I can try to use my magic on them,” he mused. He didn’t look away from the air vent. “But I don’t know how much it’ll do on bugs. And my summon is pretty big, and definitely won’t have a hard time crushing them.”

…But that wasn’t what Effie wanted. He wanted to catch them, and let them go outside.

“Hey, Effie? Can you start emptying out some of those boxes? It’s kind of chilly in this room, maybe they’re already a little slow. We can see if we can try to corral them into a box. I’m sure one of the Mauvians we know could help us get them back into space if we can't figure out how to do it here. I’ll try not to crush any of them unless I can’t help it, okay?”

And if he got hurt, well. Effie could heal him, so it was worth the risk.

“I hope they’re not too big. Ekstrom, are you okay with bugs? Because if you two can get the boxes ready, I can try to get them in your area but I don’t want to chase anything in your direction if you’re not comfortable with that.”

…But they’d have to make up their minds fast, because Amarynthos didn’t even have time to figure out what they were dealing with before a basketball sized Kosopod knocked out the grating and fell onto the ground. It squirmed on its back, all legs kicking, and it began to spin and rock as it tried to right itself.
