Endellion

User Image

Nicknames: Del
Race: Water / Wind / Geian / Lightning
Pronouns: They/Them
Physical Description: Seemingly taking after their mother, Endellion has a petite frame and sharper features.

Personality:

Epicene / Resolute / Inventive

Endellion has always been a stubborn, bull headed child whose more at home pulling their weight around the ship than worrying about their appearance. They're always the first to volunteer for something interesting, quick to voice their opinions, and once their mind is made up it's difficult to change it.

That being said if a good idea comes their way Endellion isn't one to let it go. They have their own area of the ship's cargo hold lovingly called 'The Infirmary' where a variety of specimens (odd spices, little bones, interesting shells, etc) are kept for study. While they have yet to show any magical talent, Endellion's passion for healing and anatomy have given them a passion for study. When they aren't busy with their chores (or causing chaos with their twin) they're down in the hold whipping up 'herbal remedies' that are sure to mend bones in half the time or cure an illness in hours. (At this point, however, they're more likely to make the 'patient' ill for days).

Their tomboyish nature has always led others to believe they're a rough little boy instead of a girl, and this has given the growing youth something to ponder. While they feel at home in the body they've been given, being referred to as a 'girl' doesn't seem quite right and neither does a 'boy'. In truth, Endellion doesn't care much for gender and finds their identity lying somewhere in-between.

History:

Endellion was born to the Captain of the Misty Maiden and it's sharp shooter. They've lived a blessed childhood full of adventures on the high seas that have taken them to places most their age could only dream of. Trips to the isles of the Kahikina were always a rare treat, but even the more 'mundane' voyages between Oba and Matori were a spectacle.

The bonds between family are as tight as the bonds that Endellion shares among the crew, and they've never lacked for companionship. Aboard the ship there have always been tasks and lessons, even games when seas were calm, and they've always considered themselves blessed.

Prentice Solo 1

Endellion was the furthest thing from a fighter that could have existed. While some of the deckhands were accomplished swordsmen and had offered to train them, Del had always managed to duck out of it. Their size made holding onto anything larger than a dagger difficult, and to be honest sparring against anyone taller than their father gave them anxiety. There had been more than a few times when Del was knocked onto the deck, and there would likely be more, but it wasn’t as if they went asking for a beating.

So, when Nifo signed on Endellion knew they were in trouble.

The young Moakai joined the ship during an excursion in Kahikinan waters and while they were a real crack at deck work their real talents lay in battle. Few could best Nifo, both in ferocity and general skill, making them the person a lot of the younger deckhands wanted to train with. That sort of physic was perfect at the manual labor needed aboard any vessel and some even liked to imagine what Nifo would be like against pirates and brigands.
Endellion didn’t like imaging any of it. Nifo was as tall as any Aishan they had ever seen with a scowl to match and they tried to give him a wide berth.
Which, admittedly, was made harder in the halls beneath the deck. While Nifo was far from the first Kahi to work onboard they were certainly one of the largest and getting past without brushing into them was hard. Endellion got off lucky; their smaller stature meant that most of the time they could just slip by and go on about their business. Most of the time.

Today was the exception.

Their mind had been too wrapped up in the events of their latest shore leave to notice Nifo coming their way. They’d been mumbling something and looking down at the book in their hand when the incident occurred and to this day Endellion wished they could have died right then. Endellion’s body slammed into Nifo’s causing something wet and hot to splash them both. Thankfully they’d acted quickly enough to toss their book to the side to save it, but not fast enough to save Nifo’s clothes. The moment Del heard the Moakai curse they knew their fate was sealed.

“I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you-“

In an instant Endellion was picked up by their tunic front and slammed against the wall. It would have been comical, really, if it were anyone else. The difference in their sizes was just too vast not to feel some sort of way and unfortunately for Endellion it was absolute fear. Nifo’s eyes looked like a raging sea when they leaned in close, lips pulled back in a snarl and every hair on the back of Endellion’s neck stood on end.

“You didn’t see me?” He growled.

Endellion’s hands came up to grasp onto Nifo’s wrist and even with both of theirs they couldn’t encircle it. “I said I was sorry-“

“Can words cool burns?” The altercation was starting to gain attention and soon enough the sounds of footsteps caused Nifo to cluck his tongue. He let go of Endellion like a flour sack and the teenagers legs buckled, causing them to hit the decking. “Tonight. You and me. Topdeck.”

“You want me to fight you?” For a moment, when he looked down at them, Endellion saw a flicker of what they thought was amusement. It faded so fast that they knew they must have imagined it, though, because the snarl was back in an instant. “If you’re hurt I can get Fran or some aloe-“

“Top. Deck.” He enunciated each word before continuing down the hall and disappearing into the lower decks.

You’ve really done it now, Del. Even when a few of the other deckhands showed up to check up on them all Endellion could manage was a few shell shocked ‘uh huhs’ and hums when asked about their physical state. This was bad; really bad. There wasn’t a weapon that Nifo hadn’t at least practiced with and if it was on the topdeck their fight would be on full display. Everyone who happened to be awake would see it and those that weren’t were sure to hear about it the next day. If they mentioned something to their parents they might get out of it today, but Nifo would remember.

Nifo would take it as a slight against them and come back for more.

They just needed to outsmart him. Nifo was a behemoth, but he wasn’t without honor so he wouldn’t fight dirty. He wouldn’t do anything to permanently maim Endellion which, while somewhat comforting, also didn’t mean he would hold back. They’d seen more than enough of his opponents to know Nifo was just as likely to keep a man from passing out from a concussion as he was to break bone. With shaky legs, Endellion thought about retreating to their room for the rest of the evening before thinking better of it and seeking refuge in The Infirmary instead.

If Imani found them like that then he might try to do something and their brother would just have his nose broke for his efforts. No, it was better for Endellion to take some time to center themselves and figure out a plan. Nifo was a Moakai so he served at night, when the sun wasn’t likely to harm his eyes and his preferred weapon was a massive trident. He preferred to strike from a distance with the trident, then come in for close hand to hand combat. On a ship there wasn’t much Nifo could do with the trident, but his fists…You just can’t let him grab you. Which was easier said than done. He was fast for his size; but maybe, just maybe, not faster than Del.

Which gave Endellion an idea.

For the remainder of the evening the teenager spent time in The Infirmary gathering a plan. They poured over every ounce of information they could recall about the Moakai, and about Nifo himself, while working on a few ‘tricks’ to help them in the fight. If he wanted to face Endellion he would have to fight them on their terms. Del had no grand aspirations of being known as ‘the one who defeated the undefeatable’; they only wanted to survive. They removed all of their piercings, to reduce added damage on their body, and packed their sash with any ingredient they might need to help in their fight.
And so, by the time the sun began to go down, Endellion was ready. They took an unsteady breath, allowed the panic to have it’s moment, before releasing it and climbing their way topside.

The night’s crew were milling about, going through their routine without so much as sparring a glance their way. There was a hesitancy in the teenagers step, but not once did they stop until both feet were planted securely on deck. At first they didn’t see Nifo. They knew he had to be close, but it wasn’t as if he’d been waiting next to the doorway below deck, tapping his feet and ready to throw Endellion overboard. It’s a mind game; has to be. He was making them wait and sweat it out and as much as Endellion didn’t want to admit it, the tactic was working.

“I thought you wouldn’t show.” Endellion turned their eyes up to the rigging and sat a dark figure casually leaning against the ropes. In one swift move Nifo dropped down to the deck, the glow of their lure unusually bright on such a dark night. They’d hoped for a full moon to help them to see, but thick, full clouds blocked most of the sky from view. Not even the stars would be helping Endellion that night.

“Well, I’m here.” They moved closer to Nifo and got as close as they could without straining to look up. “This is my father’s ship and brutes like you need to know whose in charge.”

“Yeah,” Nifo smirked, He is; not you.” He walked toward the mast and casually, far more non-chalantly than Endellion would have liked, lifted a massive club. After a few test swings he turned back to his opponent. “What’s your weapon of choice? A toothpick?

“Close,” Now it was Endellion’s turn to smirk. The pulled a set of gloves from their pocket and made a show of slowly putting them on. “Needles.” And when they pulled one from the pack at their side it was just as promised; a tiny, nearly non-existent needle.

Nifo frowned. “You plan to poison me?”

“It’s not poison. You failed to name any terms and there’s no way I can fight you using your strategies. You’re chuffed that someone made you look stupid; well, if you want me to look just as stupid as you then you’ll have to beat me with my strategies.”

It was a bold plan, antagonizing him like that when he was already clearly pissed, but Endellion needed Nifo to get riled up. They needed him to be so blind with rage he didn’t think and unfortunately for them it didn’t happen often. Nifo was a cool, if hardened fighter, so Endellion had to lay it on thick.

“I wonder if your little bubble will deflate like a zit once I pop it.” They raised their fingers up to their forehead and gave an imaginary flick.

And in an instant it was on.

With a loud roar Nifo barreled across the deck, raising his club just enough to go for a side sweeping attack that nearly landed. Endellion ducked just in time to have the club sail across their curls and in a panic they rolled to the side. “Stop running!” Yeah, I’ll get right on that. The moment they stopped that club was going to bash in the side of their head or demolish at least half their ribs. Reaching back into their back, Endellion grasped a small pouch and the next time Nifo went in for a hit they tossed up the pouch instead.

A bright ‘flash’ illuminated the entirety of the ship. Even the regular crew, poor sods that they were, cried out as they were blinded and only Endellion, who had thought to close their eyes, was able to see. Nifo staggered, the bright light doing the most damage to his eyes, and Endellion took that as a chance to land a hard hit to his solar plexus.

Nifo gagged and dropped the club. Before Endellion could duck away, however, Nifo reached out to grab Endellion’s arm. His hand clasped around their bicep and before they could process it Nifo lifted them off the deck. In one fast, barely thought out move Nifo slammed them back down onto the wood. Endellion’s body seized, the air leaving in a quick rush and the only thing they could hear was static. Was it over? It had barely even started and now…All they wanted to do was to throw up and –

Endellion managed to roll over before doing just that. The contents of their stomach spilled out in a rush, just in time for the club to catch them in the head and knock them across the deck into the railing. Their scream was only as loud as the onlookers, who had just caught onto the fight.

“Stop it! You’ll kill him!”

“Lad, stop! You’ve done enough! He’s beaten, can’t you see?”

A few of the men tried to physically detain Nifo, but he shoved them all off. Endellion had wanted him enraged beyond reason, and they’d gotten it.
They struggled to reach for the railing behind them, but ultimately failed. Everything shook around them and they recognized the taste of blood in their mouth. The pain…Spirits, their head was killing them, but over it all they could still hear Nifo bellowing.

“GET UP! GET UP, YOU WORTHLESS SACK OF FLESH!”

Maybe you are worthless. They were the child of a Captain and as wet behind the ears as any greenhorn. They knew sailing like the back of their hand, but where was the physicality to show for it? Where was the muscle, the definition, the grit? I have grit. Maybe it was the gender they’d been given at birth that held them back…Maybe it was their race or a lack of determination…Whatever it was that separated them from Nifo was vast, but Endellion wasn’t made for quitting. They shook when they stood, blood freely falling from their mouth onto the decking, but it wasn’t over yet.

They weren’t born a brute, but Endellion was one hell of a fighter.

With a cry of their own Endellion ran across the deck. Nifo roared in return, pushing past all who held him back and with a mighty swing he meant to take down his opponent in one go. Endellion hit the floor, using their own blood and sweat to slid beneath Nifo and pop out the backside. Before he could think to turn Endellion had leapt up onto his back, jabbing no less than three needles into his neck and causing the mighty Maokai to stumble.

“Wh-what are you doing?! You said no poison!”

“It’s not poison; I just hit your nerves! Read a damn book!” Nifo stumbled, dropping his club to reach back for Endellion but instead falling to his knees. Before he could hit the ground, however, Endellion reached around to shove a plant pod into his mouth. They used both hands to close his teeth over it, popping the little beat and sending whatever juice it contained down his gullet. Before he could so much as curse their name Nifo was unconscious.

The teenager could barely register their victory. Their body was struggling for air and the pain of inhaling nearly overtook them. A pair of hands came up from behind them, physically lifting the little hybrid away from their opponent and into their arms. Words were being shouted all around them, but Endellion couldn’t hear an ounce of it. All of their reading, all of that work…it paid off. They couldn’t see properly and they were pretty sure they’d lost a few teeth, but…it worked. They’d won.

Conscious or not Endellion was grinning like an absolute madman by the time they were brought below deck. As terrifying as it had been, they were positively high on the victory and when the world faded away around them they knew it was all worth it.

Class Choice Solo - Arcanist

When Endellion woke the next day it was to sore muscles and a raging migraine. Several of their ribs had been broken, at least one tooth was gone and as they’d been told they suffered from a concussion. All in all it wasn’t the worst of things, considering just how riled up they’d made Nifo, and the bruising looked far worse. When they’d manage to pick themselves up out of bed to wash their face it had been with a grimace.

The bruising was bad enough to darken both of Endellion’s eyes, split their lip, color their skin a variety of hues and worst of all was the handprint encircling their bicep. It was…certainly not their finest moment and yet, in a way, it had been. Through sheer ingenuity and cunning they’d managed to defeat a Moakai warrior and –

“Oh s**t.”

Nifo! As quickly as they were able Endellion went after the Kahikinan. Thankfully no one was even expecting them to be out of bed so they weren’t watching as carefully as they ought to have been. When they came across the Moakai it was on the topdeck where he was receiving an absolute earful. The poor sod in charge of supervising him had been docked for Nifo’s action and thus Nifo himself was being punished. For a moment Endellion hung around in the shadows, using a wall to support themselves, but when the coast was clear they saddled up next to the larger man.

When he caught sight of them the Moakai clucked his tongue. “You tryin’ to get us both on lock down?”

“It was a spat between two hot headed kids. It’s fine.”

“Maybe for you,” He grumbled. “Cost me my job. Next time we make port I’m getting off.”

Seriously? Nifo, I’m so sorry, I had no idea-“

Nifo held up a hand and sighed. “Don’t. It was my fault. My ma always told me my temper would get the better of me and this was just proof. I like sailin’, but right now it’s just not a good fit for me. Least not here.”

Endellion frowned and looked up at the taller teen. In the light of day he looked far younger than they’d thought; maybe closer to Imani’s age, honestly. At night he was an absolute terror, but then again, all things were scarier at night. He rubbed at his eyes, and remembering the sun bothered him, Endellion grabbed Nifo’s hand to pull him back toward the shadows.

“Look, you’re better than I thought you were. A lot better. Make sure you do something with it.” He reached out to flick their forehead and when Endellion squirreled up their features the Moakai actually had the nerve to laugh. “And who knows? Maybe we’ll face off again in the future. Won’t be the last time I see the Maiden in port.”

They stayed like that for a while, hidden in shadow and discussing what could have been, until Endellion was eventually caught and shuffled back to bed. For the rest of Nifo’s service the pair were kept separated, though Del did spare a few glances his way when they could and eventually Nifo was gone. He was a good sailor, a damn good fighter, but Nifo had a lot of demons he needed to work out.

Demons that had awakened Endellion’s.

Night and day since the fight they’d poured over their books. They took what they learned from a text no sane person should have to turn the red flower plant into a salve for their aches and that bulb, the one that dropped Nifo so efficiently, they worked to extract the juice from it for other projects. Schemes, schematics, visions and musings…There wasn’t a moment in the day that Endellion wasn’t envisioning ways to turn both natures splendor and earthling ingenuity into ways to better their fighting. It’s what led them to looking at the Arcane arts; at blunderbusses and pistols.

And with the training they’d received from their mother holding a pistol was as natural as breathing.

But how far could they go on their own like this? How far would books take them when it was natural practice they needed? A few years at sea with a new ship, a new captain and crew; that’s what Endellion needed. Something fresh and when they came back to the Maiden it would be with all the knowledge they’d obtained.
