His marking is a patch of geometric shapes (mostly circles and lines) on the top of his left foot. Most of the time, it's not visible since he prefers to stay covered up.
Personality ||ambitious, selfish, awkward
+ ambitious Even though he started so young that his alchemic skills seem advanced for his age, Howth has had to work quite hard to earn his knowledge, and he's well aware of that fact. He loves to learn, and he chases new ideas like they stole something from him. He maintains this drive in other parts of his life, he simply hasn't had much of an opportunity to show it yet.
+ creative A large part of scientific study is thinking of all of the possibilities that might arise from any given situation, and Howth excels at doing just that. He also draws well, sings passably, and occasionally dances with the right partner.
~ awkward He might be good at sketching and experimenting and studying, but Howth is as socially awkward as a boy who rarely left the house would be, and he has no real desire to waste his time becoming more charismatic. He gets by.
- selfish Howth watches his own back first in all things. Perhaps it comes from having been a spoiled only child for most of his life, but however he got here, he has quite the ego on him and won't hesitate to look for how he might benefit in any given situation. Thankfully, he's not intentionally malicious about it, but it can be rather annoying to deal with.
- proud Pride is Howth's greatest sin, and while he isn't arrogant enough to believe he can do it all, when he does feel he's good at something, he is clearly the best at it. No question. And he truly hates to have that perception challenged or be around people who might see things differently.
Life Work || Howth's life work revolves around the disappearing/reappearing ink he developed while apprenticing under his father, a healer. Missives written in this ink retain a faint purplish color as they dry, after which they are as invisible and undetectable as a message penned in water. When the paper bearing the message is brushed with a seaweed-based reagent, the ink reappears and can be read.
Upon entering the Academy of Steam, Howth has (mostly) perfected his invisible ink and a single reagent. He will spend his time in the Sector of Community making sure that the ink performs as it should every time it is used, as well as reworking it so it can be used with many reagents rather than just the one. That way, if multiple parties wish to make use of the ink, they will not be able to "crack" each other's correspondence.

✔Nnena || Though he has a certain streak of resentment for her now that she's giving him a sibling, Howth loves his mother fiercely and has always dreamed of being as strong as she is so that he might protect her. Instead, he made some ink.
✔Chenet || Howth's father has a tendency to hold him at arm's length, not because he doesn't enjoy being a father, but because he occasionally forgets he is one. Chenet is often so intensely focused on his work that there is little room for anything else in his head, a feeling Howth can certainly sympathize with.

the past
From a very early age, Howth was fascinated by potions, tinctures, and any matter of mixtures that did the unexpected. His father, Chenet, was a healer of the mundane variety, patching cuts, setting bones, and easing the discomfort of disease without the use of magic, and Howth learned a great deal under his tutelage. But Chenet was a successful man, and seeing no need to reinvent the wheel, Howth strayed away from healing when he grew old enough to start projects of his own.
His mother, Nnena, was a bodyguard officially, but she was often sent away on mysterious trips for the well-to-do, and Howth worried greatly for her while she was away. Over time amidst his worry, he grew interested in the transfer of secret information and spying, and endeavored to find a way to make that sort of business less dangerous. He created his ink first, developing a solution that quickly faded after it had dried and was indistinguishable from the surface it was applied to. It took almost two years for him to find something that would reactivate the ink, though in that time he was actively changing the components in the ink as well, so he likely reached a working combination out of equal parts luck and skill.
Nnena retired a mere four months ago, and soon after that, she announced she was expecting a second child, a full sixteen years after the first. Howth took the news as a sign that he should get out on his own more, maybe stop being such a homebody, but he is at a complete loss as to how to go about doing that.
