The doors to the ivory hall open once more to reveal a fantastical change. The gauzy drapes have been replaced by heavy black velvet, the delicate tall tables have been removed. In the center of the room is a cleared space--a dance floor, to judge by the couples and trios twirling about it--where the unmasked Alois had been so recently screaming. Now there are strange, modernist chairs along the walls and in clusters near the entrance to the courtyard. They look like nothing so much as vaguely sculpted teardrops. Despite their unfamiliar shape and unwelcoming appearance, they're quite comfortable.

In the sky above, the moons have moved closer to the apex of their arc. Stars seem to sparkle in the black velvet, and glimmers of galaxies.

The deer triplets have retreated. They're nowhere to be found. In their place at the head of the hall is the Spinel Lady, her gray dress replaced with a pearlescent white column. It gathers at the wrists, the throat, and just below her bust with black lace that seems to writhe to a heartbeat. There is no sign of the attacks she has just endured.

The burning man stands to her left, a fair distance away; Adoelle stands to the right, her stained white dress replaced by another. Each of them are taken with their own conversations, and do not seem to wish to be disturbed.

In a small alcove sits the sinister survivor, alone and undisturbed, his drink in hand. Prividaniye has gone elsewhere for now.

To the left is a grand staircase that leads to the plum parlor.
To the right is an open, arched doorway that leads into the scarlet foyer.

PERSUADABLE NPCS:

The Burning Man; 16+ to persuade. Will cease answering your questions after 3 failed attempts.
Is on fire. Unmasked, and on fire. Is not wearing any clothes, on account of being on fire. Responds well to philosophical inquiries, but as he is actively on fire, easily becomes impatient.

Adoelle Nashua; 14+ to approach, 10+ to persuade.
Unmasked, dressed all in white, happy and healthy. Seems concerned about all comers, genuinely seems to be helpful, but clams up tight when asked about herself. Far less knowledgeable than her peers, apparently.

The Spinel Lady; 14+ to approach, 20 to persuade. This character will attack you after three failed persuasion rolls.
Wearing a black lace mask dotted with red spinel gems. Prefers to be approached by the beautiful, and those who speak beautiful words. Does not put up with sass, and has an aura of Severe Danger. Those who try to sass her will be ignored no matter your roll, because we are roleplaying.

The Sinister Stranger; 20 to persuade.
Wearing a pale gray plague doctor mask and wearing a navy-blue sari-inspired suit. Very tall, very shapely, has tattoos visible below his cuffs. Seems human, but who knows? Always seems to be laughing at you when you're not looking directly at him.

Shun Kuroda 25/25 | Considering his options

After some time spent skulking through the halls on his own, Shun had stepped through into what had been the ivory hall before. The room was drastically different from before, and the change was jarring enough that he had to stop just before entering much further.

Off in the distance, he saw several important figures, but he didn't approach. Not now, anyway. After what had transpired earlier, he had to wonder if any of them would consider speaking with him at all. Spinel was out of the question entirely.

But time was running short. He was going to need to at least pretend that he was actually competent at doing this investigation soon. He was sorely out of his element here, and it was a realization that came far too late. There was no physical evidence he could pick apart. It was all... people. Mostly shitty people at that.

For now, he watched the three at the head of the hall from a distance.

Shun Kuroda 25/25 | Attempting to stealthily approach the trio, +2 to approach

It appeared that they were conversing with one another. It was entirely possible that they were talking about things not pertaining to the events of tonight at all, but just the same, they could be speaking of relevant things. Shun surveyed the room, looking to see if he had a path in which he could approach, as well as a place he could stand nearby where he wouldn't be easily noticed.

Eavesdropping had worked well enough to fetch gossip for the stranger, but this was a bit more of a challenge.

Even so, he began to make his way over, keeping his movements casual to try and avoid drawing attention to himself. Being able to blend in and appear as if you weren't up to something shady was important. Now and then, dancers in the hall twirled nearby, providing a small bit of cover as he approached. He kept an exit strategy in mind, should this fail.

But first, he just needed to get close enough to try and listen.

Shun manages to secret himself inside the heavy velvet drapes approximately equidistant to Melany and the Burning Man. His line of vision isn't so good, but eavesdropping doesn't require your eyes.

The burning man says to someone: "Noeh, ask the Lady Melany--" There's no answer from whoever he's speaking to, but he sighs. "That's right. I defer to your greater knowledge."

Shun Kuroda 25/25 | Listening +2 to approach/stealth

Shun went still as he found himself a spot within the drapes near Melany and the Burning Man. He tilted his head, hearing the latter speak to someone named Noeh. That wasn't a name he recognized.

Perhaps it was just another servant, though that was unlikely, depending on who he was talking to exactly for seeking advice. He waited and remained in place, listening for more context.

Chester Poole: 25/25; pretending he's on the BBC and maybe providing a nerd distraction if this roll isn't a 1

Chester had only heard about the goings-on in the ivory hall second hand, but he had no trouble discerning the infamous Spinel Lady from the others milling about as he arrived in the blackened version. He would try chivalry once, and if that didn't place him in her good graces, he would just back away. No harm, no foul, or so he hoped.

He waited until she wasn't conversing with anyone before approaching, then said, "Good evening," as he bowed at the waist. It might have been more impressive had he known what to do with his arms, but he eventually got them under control, tucking one shaking limb across his chest and the other against the small of his back. When he straightened, he kept his eyes on the living lace at the lower half of her dress, concerned that if he wasn't looking at her face, his gaze would end up somewhere far more offensive. He was afraid to look at her face.

"I was hoping to hear an opinion on Adoelle Nashua's fate from someone who matters." Chester noticed an unnatural ripple in a nearby curtain, and just in case he added, "And I also think you're looking quite lovely this evening. Leading with that seemed a little tacky though. Sorry." He pressed his lips together, even going so far as to bite them shut to prevent himself from blabbering further.

Jack Hawthorn | 25/25 | broaching mister sinister and apparently copying Chester's roll

Having stood by with only photographs as evidence for his acts, Jack decided it was time to actually try approaching one of these mysterious people. La que tiene la información; tiene el poder. Information was power here, and with time ticking down--the reverberations of ten chimes still in his ears--he had to make a move.

Drink in hand, he took in the scene unveiling in the now black hall, from the dancing to the quiet conversations to the lone wolves, and decided to take his chance with one of the latter.

Perhaps the Sinister Man had chosen his spot because it was so isolated. The alcove was small, and with both of them being men of tall stature, it might get cramped quickly. Jack chose not to wholly enter just yet, standing just outside where the extension connected to the hall and giving a slight bow. "A plague doctor," he observed. "Interesting choice given the purpose of the ball, no?"

[25/25 | EVE]: a fox appears

A silver fox in a pearl-and-ebony mask sauntered into the room, and sat a foot or two away from the burning man, in such a domestic fashion it looked like part of his daily routine.

Rolling a bit to her side, she stared innocently up at him.

alois scholz (unmasked) || 25/25 || groveling

Alois sighed heavily at the entrance to the black hall. White-knuckling the wine bottle in hand left him slightly numb, slightly appeased of the rage welling within him. It was natural, he told himself, to hate his latest position, but he would not allow pride to ruin him. No, such an act demanded more pride than others gave credit for.

So he swallowed, and pushed past the door.

The sweeping entrance to the black hall from the scarlet foyer promised grandiosity, and never failed to deliver. He felt unduly important while descending the staircase, while his gaze roved about the room to spot the stark and dramatic rewrapping of the former ivory hall. This version felt far more akin to his tastes, and the thick ambience of animosity promised to keep his senses on edge. Few others looked to be in the room. Those who still remained kept to the corners, or in the case of the three Patrons, remained at the dramatic fore.

Alois reached the bottom of the steps, one hand still on the elegant banister, when he dared look in the direction of the Patrons. Immediately he thought he caught Melany’s daggers in his direction and forced his attention to the ground instead. Head bowed, he watched many a graceful marble tile pass beneath his feet. It must be said. I need to be careful with words. She tolerates no ugliness, as Apeshit said, and Father has no patience for insincerity. And for one who has known me long enough… It’s a tricky task to undertake. Present well, be pithy, be polite.

He approached the head of the hall in a death march, being driven at the heels and yet repulsed by going further. Pacing himelf proved a misbegotten task. He wasn’t one for apprehension, so he strode as quickly as he could without losing grace. Others were around him, he knew - a fox (where did that come from?) laid before Ezra, a stranger spoke to a plant (too much to drink?) near Melany, and one other stood far away by the sinister-looking man with the mask he wanted to steal. So far none had approached the mistress or Adoelle, and a fox couldn’t count for much of an audience. He wondered, briefly, if she required onlookers for the act. Perhaps not. Perhaps it would be better if none were around to invoke to similar levels of ire as before. If that were true, then he had no longer to stall.

Finally he drew himself before her, taking in the pure white of her dress before he dropped to his knees carefully. In his hands he still held the bottle. Carefully he crafted his words with less natural accent. „I apologize for my foolishness, Spinel Lady. I sought harm with my words out of misbegotten petulance, but I now recognize my error in judgment. Please consider this as my request for forgiveness.“ At once he offered forth a bottle, black as the lace on her gown, of Quinta do Vallado Reserva Field Blend 2010, a douro wine as dark as they came.

„And Father,“ he offered next, „I disappointed - no, embarrassed you with my actions. It won’t happen again.“ Ezra likely appreciated the brevity without the pomp presented to Melany. He hoped this attempt wouldn’t bite him in the a**.

[Unmasked Temperance: 25/25 wallflower-ing]

Temperance stepped into the hall and, rather than make her way towards the gaggle of important people, veered off. She sank into a chaise, carefully pulling out her notebook. she wouldn't overhear anything from where she was, but she could use the time to organize her thoughts.

Shun hears nothing. Either his targets are being very sneaky, or he's just poorly placed.

Blade Kuroda

Chester attempts to talk to Melany, only to have her turn sharply away from him. She has no desire to talk to humans right now.

Smerdle

"One who acts to preserve life in the face of unbelievable odds? Yes. I thought it appropriate." The sinister survivor shrugs. "Won't you have a seat?"

medigel

"You will not fool me," says Ezra to the fox. "I know who you are... Don't look at me as if you don't know I know." He sighs: god damn it. "I think everyone ought to re-read their invitations. The unmasking is at moonset, not midnight. There is still time, but you all must speak to each other."

He says, by way of farewell, "Which being a fox isn't going to help."

cibarium

Alois grovels, and Melany pointedly doesn't look his way. Her interest is betrayed by the single delicate hand fisting in the white of her skirt. "If the words of a worm like you could hurt me, I'd hardly be worth my title," she says. The masked woman at her side steps forward to take the bottle from Alois; this she holds in delicate hands. "Consider your insult forgiven, but not forgotten."

Ezra, nearby, nods. He seems... proud, almost, in a way that only those he's raised would recognize. (Behind him, July flashes a thumbs up.) "Thank you, Alois," he says, gravely.

Shun kuroda 25/25 | repositioning. +2 to approach/stealth

After a bought of silence, Shun furrowed his brow. Perhaps this spot wasn't that good after all. He waited a moment longer, then carefully began to move in order to hopefully get a better position for the time being. If that didn't work out, he was going to need to try something else. As he relocated, he was careful to try not to disturb the drapes too much.
