Race: Elf
Base: Elf M Face 33

Description:
  • Body: Plain flesh tone, no markings. Something in the gold/pale brown spectrum. I used dad18d in her reference picture. I'd like her to have eyeshadow, either in pink or green shades, and some eye liner. Perhaps a pink lipstick as well. Any other makeup is optional.
  • Eyes: Bright green.
  • Hair: Dark pink. Short, slightly curly ends, and two high pigtails.
  • Clothes:Green dress with a wrap-style top and flowy skirt. The style does not have to be exactly like the reference pictures, as long as it is similar. A brief overview of their life so far:
  • Giselle was abandoned as a soulstone for reasons unknown (i.e., parents decided not to keep her, parents dead, etc). She was adopted by a wealthy elven family that had no heirs. Though she didn't realize it at the time, her parents adopted her as a form of power maneuvering, attempting to appear charitable by taking in an orphan in order to raise their esteem in the eyes of their peers and betters. Giselle was treated well though, and taught the family business. There were high expectations but she was able to meet them. She enjoyed being challenged, the thrill of conquering what was set before her and being praised for it, and looked forward to her future. Then one day, her parents brought home a soul stone. Their reasons for not imbuing before then were simple enough. They had plenty of time, since they were a long-lived race and still considered quite young. Their business had been going through a period of growth and there had been a lot of power jockeying. There just wasn't time to raise a child properly. Giselle had been nothing more than a mean to an end, a showpiece to prove what kind, good people people they were. Perhaps her competence was a welcome surprise, but it just added to the image they were trying to cultivate. Of course they wouldn't get rid of her once they had children of their own. Even if they had no intention of making her their heir, she was a valuable asset that would serve them well. But that was all she was. As soon as her brother was awakened from his stone, Giselle was officially no longer the heir. She was virtually ignored after that, even more so when a second stone was successfully imbued while her little brother was a freshling. No more challenges, no more attention or praise. Giselle slowly became bitter. It was not so much the loss of status that bothered her (she loved her younger siblings), it was how invisible she became to a family she thought loved her. She tried sticking it out, but when her siblings got old enough to begin snubbing her like the rest of the family, she left the house and went down to Below. She took classes in Law and Business to acquaint herself with the customs, and is determined to open a successful business of her own to prove she doesn't need the ones who tossed her aside.

Whether or not they're an orphan from the cache:
  • I think that would be impossible, unless Above had a similar cache.

How their status as an orphan or non-orphan has effected them:
In the beginning it didn't mean much. Giselle knew she'd face a certain amount of disdain from families that had blood heirs, so she worked harder to prove that just because she was adopted didn't mean she was any less competent. She was hard on herself, and loved nothing better than to please her family. After her brother (and eventually her sister) came along, her family's total abandonment of her hit hard. It was like they told her she wasn't enough, could never be enough. She never blamed her siblings for that; while they were little they were sweet, and the only ones who still treated her like family. She left when their attitudes began to change, before those memories could be tainted, and refuses to contact her family ever again for the same reason. At this point in her life, Giselle is nursing a grudge and feels a level of contempt for her species as a whole. She's living in Below and starting a new life, where love and hard work wins out over blood or entitlement.

One event that changed their life or effected them:
  • The birth of her brother set about a lot of changes. The change in how her family viewed her started her somewhat prejudice attitude towards her own race and culture, as well as brought about a level of cynical bitterness that was not part of her before. It would eventually drive her to move away from Above to Below and restart her entire life. On the positive side, Giselle discovered she is quite fond of children and enjoyed being a sister while she was able.

How they feel about their race and house:
  • Giselle holds a great dislike for elves. She finds their entitled attitudes to be irritating at best, and their superiority complex is all veneer overlaying greed. She does not hate elves. In fact, she is likely to be very sympathetic to other orphans or towards blood heirs who are determined to work hard. She is civil, if not friendly, and tries to keep her personal feelings in check.

Their goals in life:
  • Giselle wants to start her own business and attain a level of success equivalent to her family's business. At the very least she wants to lay the groundwork for something that will grow bigger even after she'd gone, since her family has had generations to work on their business.
OOC: I want to work on personal growth for Giselle. A lot of her motives at first will be purely to spite those she feels have wronged her. I would like for her attitude to slowly soften; as she achieves more with her life, it's less and less about proving herself and more about being herself. She can be quite generous and loving at heart, she just needs time to prove that to others and herself.

Personality Overview:
Giselle is not your typical elf. She eschews racial pride as she feels abandoned by her race, to the point where she has abandoned Above to live in Below; the fact that elves are not popular with the other races and that she will be judged for what she is is something that leaves her bitter and resentful on the inside. In the end all she wants is for people to see her for who she is and what she can do. She is very controlled and careful not to let anyone see her inner thoughts and feelings. In a sense she is fighting an internal war, her need for approval battling with her determination to succeed on her own. She maintains an air of polite civility and professionalism that comes off as aloof and stiff, but as she is now Giselle cannot allow herself to lower her shields to expose her true self...and her vulnerabilities.

Positive and negative traits:
Positive
  • Loving | When Giselle does take to someone she can be quite sweet and will go out of her way with little gestures here and there that proves she's thinking of them.
  • Generous | While Giselle is all about a successful business and bottoms lines, she's got a generous heart. She donates her old things, buy food, clothes, or toys for seasonal charities, and is the kind of person who'd buy a hot drink for someone standing out in the cold. With her business she's willing to work with someone's personal income level to create a payment plan.
  • Hard-working | Giselle is the type that once she feels the drive to do something she won't stop until she achieves her goal. She's willing to put in long hours and won't settle for "good enough".
  • Trustworthy | This can be applied in a board sense. Personally, you can tell Giselle just about anything and she won't betray your secrets. Professionally, if she tells you something you can believe her. No hidden costs or sub-par materials. If something goes wrong, she will own up to her mistake and do everything she can to make it right; even if it's someone she might not necessarily like.
  • Confident | Giselle believes in her own abilities. If she says she can do something, then she will do it come hell or high water.

Negative
  • Obstinate | Giselle could give a mule lessons in obstinacy. Once she makes up her mind it's very hard to dissuade her. Sometimes she's stubborn just for the sake of refusing to give in to another's opinion, even when doing so might cause her to fail.
  • Prideful | Giselle can sometimes be a bit too confident in her own abilities. Though she hates to acknowledge it, her time and training spent with her family in addition to her schooling in Below gives her a sense of superiority. Whenever she fails or is proved wrong she can lash out or pull away.
  • Private | Giselle doesn't like to share personal things. Stories of her past, her thoughts, her feelings. Sometimes she bottles things in far too much, when simply talking about it could help her.
  • Obsessive | Giselle can't let go. She isn't prone towards revenge seeking, but she knows how to hold on to and nurse a grudge that should have died a long time ago.
  • Jealous | Giselle can't help but covet thing she wishes she could have. Acceptance, success, love, friendship, family. She would like nothing more than to be happy with what she has achieved, but deep down she yearns for more.

Likes and dislikes:
Likes
  • The color green
  • Apples
  • Children
  • Honesty
  • Pretty clothes and accessories
  • Praise/Feeling appreciated

Dislikes
  • Entitled people
  • Being dismissed or ignored
  • Instant food
  • Neoptism*
  • Loneliness
  • Feeling vulnerable

*There are exceptions. Her feelings on the matter are complicated. On principle she takes a disliking to anyone whom she learns is inheriting a position, no matter how high the rank, due to family connections. This is only with in-family companies though; typically family members aren't listed as references for more common jobs, due to the potential for bias, and if a more high-ranking job is achieved at a non-familial company through the inquiries of more successful family members then the hire-ee in question is usually started off in the bottom rungs and must work their way up to prove themselves, just like any other employee. Competence and hard work don't seem to do much for her negative feelings either; she is quite certain that her siblings are competent and hard workings, even as she was (and still is). A good portion of her dislike may stem from sheer bitterness at seeing something she feels like she should have had that was taken away from her. She may also be projecting in an attempt to shield her mind from self-destructive emotions; part of herself (the logical, calculating part) understands the system, can even agree with it and see some sense to it, and she hates that part of herself because it makes her wonder if she's in the wrong. Her determination and drive currently stem from her belief that she was wronged, so the thought that that might not be the case could be harmful to her mental and emotional state as she is now. Thus she holds firm to her dislike. She can be won over with proofs of competence, dedication, and fairness, though it takes a lot of time and effort due to her own stubbornness to refuse to admit she might be wrong. As her character develops and eventually relaxes her views will be less harsh, though she will never be fond of the system. One of the main exceptions to her dislike would be someone who doesn't want to take over the family business but is being pressured to do so anyways. She is actually sympathetic in those cases, which might surprise people since it would seem they're throwing away what Giselle herself would have wanted to have.

Hobbies:
  • Baking | Giselle is quite handy in the kitchen, and specializes in making sweets. She loves trying out new recipes or making elaborate confectioneries.
  • Making jewelry | Giselle has a good eye for stones and an artistic sense for what kind of setting they might look best in. Jewelry-making is a labor of love for her, but one she wants to turn into a career someday.
  • Reading how-to books, romance novels, and mystery novels | Giselle enjoys a good book, and these are some of her favorite genres. Nothing like a little mystery and romance in one's free time, even if it's fictional, and all the interesting tips and tricks in how-to books are worth ferreting out.
  • Gardening | She's no natural with plants, but Giselle enjoys growing pretty flowers for ornamentation or herb/vegetable/fruit gardens to add to the table.

Quote:
Something has just reminded your Nightmare of a poignant memory. What was it, and what was the memory?

Giselle sat at her work bench, back bent and pliers in her hands. She twisted silver wire around deftly into delicate, lace-like patterns. On the work bench, set to the side and resting on a folded cloth, was a beautiful piece of topaz. She finished the base and leaned back with a sigh, then stretched out her abused muscles, listening to the joints pop. She set her pliers down on the table and reached for the stone to check its fit.

High pitch giggles and the patter of little feet reached her ears as she plucked at bits of wire, trying to get it to hold the shape she wanted. A small elf burst through her bedroom door and threw himself at her, tugging on her silk blouse.

"Big sister, big sister! Come play with me!"

She looked down into the expectant face, full of sweetness.

"In a moment. I have to finish this, or it will be all tangled."

Curiosity mingled with interest.

"What's it going to be?"

More tugs on her blouse, and an effort to climb into her lap for a better look. She picked him up and settled him in her lap.

"Well, this piece right here-"

Giselle's hand twitched, still poised in the air to take the topaz. She let her hand fall back to the scarred wood of her work bench, eyes staring into nothing. She stayed like that for a moment. Then her hand clench, and she turned to face her work resolutely, refusing to let an old memory get the best of her. She didn't even reach up to wipe the tears from her face.

Critique Incoming!!

Appearance:
Everything here looks good! But I would make sure to specify what you mean by "flesh tone" in your custom form, since Nightmares and Daydreams come in all colors and they are all considered "flesh tones." C:

Backstory:
I like the overall story here (in her brief overview), but I think it could use some reworking.

Before the treaties existed that allowed Above and Below to travel freely back and forth, trade was very much still a thing. High quality stones were available to Above long before travel was, so Giselle's parents would have access to them considering their wealth.

The quality of stones also does not have an impact on whether or not a person can imbue. The quality refers to the stone's own ability to retain the magic without breaking. If Giselle's parents couldn't imbue before, the quality of the stone wouldn't affect that at all, so you'll need to rework that to make it work. : D

If you can fix that, this section should be good to go!

Personality:
Everything looks great here! I love her depth, she seems like she has a lot of internal conflict to work through. <3

It's not necessary, but if you're up to it, some expansion on her feelings concerning nepotism would be awesome.

Prompt:
Looks good!

Rework that backstory issue with the stones and quote me when you're ready for a new critique! <3

nepsah

Added a color description as well as a hex code to help be more specific with what skin tone I'm going for.

Altered the backstory, hopefully it works better!

Attempted to expound on Giselle's feelings towards nepotism, hopefully didn't just make a muddle of it XD

Also shoving some other examples of her roleplay in here, so that I don't have to hunt down the links at a later date.
