Zone One, objective 4
The pens that Cerise had found while scavenging for supplies with the professor and James she kept for herself; the group could have everything else, but she needed the outlet of writing. Fortunately, paper was in great supply. They were still in a school, after all.
I was planning to go to Italy during winter break. I was going to start in Florence like da Vinci and walk the paths he walked to Rome and Bologna and Venice. I was going to soak in the beauty, the history, the culture, and remind myself why I was putting myself through another two years of university. It took da Vinci 14 years to paint the Mona Lisa. I could afford to wait and be patient, like he was.
Now I don't know how I survived yesterday or if I'll live to see tomorrow. The world so quickly went to hell all around us, we didn't even have time to prepare--how do you even prepare for something like this? Zombie apocalypse 101 isn't exactly an elective. I'm an art history major, not some...I don't know. Words continue to fail me. How can I even begin to describe something like this? How can we get through this alive?
What if we don't? What if the walls fall and they get us all and we're easy targets because we're a bunch of students and teachers and not some trained outdoorsy people or whatever. Do we become the infected? Do we just die? Will anyone remember us when we're gone? Who's going to tell our families--if they're still alive, which we don't know because it's not exactly safe to leave.
But I've seen what happens when the infected get a hold of someone. I see it every time I close my eyes and hear it in every loud noise. I don't want to spend my last moments on Earth terrified and being torn apart. I don't want to end up some mindless zombie, either.
I hate this being afraid all the time. I hate not knowing how this is going to end. I had my life all planned out and now I don't even know if I'm going to get to live it.
What if we do survive? What then? How can we possibly go back to the way things were a month ago? How can we be the same people, having lived through this?
What's next?
