Humans, Sorcha decided, were very nearly more trouble than they were worth. They were rude, and heavy, and lazy--she didn't know how long she had been dragging this human around, both arms locked around its waist and tottering on her hooves under its weight in the most awkward and graceless dance known to monster--and all of this exertion was very nearly making her sweat and that was completely unacceptable. No one had told her that volunteering was going to require so much effort! This was quite possibly not even worth the yay the pamphlet had promised at the end.

Fortunately, the portal was within sight. She just had to drag this unwieldy (and ungrateful) human through the portal and then she would have done the thing and would be able to collect her yay, though she was sorely tempted to demand multiple yays for her efforts.

With a heavy and overdramatic sigh, Sorcha unceremoniously dumped her human burden into the welcoming glow of the portal. She congratulated herself for a job well done before stepping through it herself.

Only to find that she was not, actually, back in Halloween and, worse, her rescuee was still sprawled on the ground at her hooves. Sorcha groaned theatrically, her ears drooping. "Where are we now?" She most certainly did not whine, looking around with distaste at the desolate landscape. All she could see was a long road and a very tall, poorly designed skyscraper. No yays in sight, of course, though there was what appeared to be an awfully large horse-shaped thing.

Not quite kin but close enough, she supposed. "Excuse me, sir," she started, craning her neck to look up at the giant horse.

Except suddenly it didn't seem to be quite as horse-shaped anymore, the shadowstuff it was made of spooling out into reaching arms and grasping hands.

All of the hands seemed to speak directly into her head at once--and wasn't that something, she thought dimly over her sudden splitting headache, considering that hands didn't even have mouths--and then her every instinct told her to run, far and fast, and don't forget the human.

It seemed easier to pick the human up, her complaints silenced by the extreme sympathy the voices evoked and her speed increased by necessity. At some point, she shed her dainty humanoid shape for that of a strong horse, her human slung carelessly over her back. Four legs were much more efficient than two, after all, and the farther away they got from that thing, the better.

Eventually Sorcha ran out of room to run as the road became increasingly dense with abandoned cars. She was getting tired, anyway; she liked running in this form, but by herself and in pleasant meadows and fields, not with a passenger on an ugly road in a headlong dash from sure and sudden danger. Danger was something that Sorcha actively avoided for just this reason.

She picked her way around cars, dwarfing most of them, but finally found one that looked like it would hold her in this form, and probably her passenger too. Fortunately, the drivers side door was already open, probably left that way by whoever had deserted it. It was no easy task to fold herself into the passenger seat, but it looked as though the car's previous owner had been large themselves, as the seat was already pushed all the way back.

She wiggled and unceremoniously dumped her human cargo into the back seat before squirming into the driver's seat. She didn't actually know how to drive, but she was pretty sure there was a button she was supposed to press or a lever she needed to turn or--oh, yes, a key. A tiny key. With an unladylike snort of distaste, Sorcha delicately took the key between her teeth and turned it until the engine roared to life. Yes, good, now there was something she was supposed to step on and it was only by luck that her hoof was already on the gas pedal. They immediately sped the hell away from the oncoming creature.

It wasn't really that difficult, Sorcha thought, keeping the car steady by holding the steering wheel in her mouth. Much like running, only with less effort and infinitely more awkward. She would have to try this again sometime when she wasn't a horse.

The creature caught up and rudely jolted the car forward. Sorcha pressed the pedal to the metal. With her hoof.

Sorcha could see the portal just up ahead, and they were going fast enough now that the monster was losing ground on them. They were almost there, and then the car died. Looked like they would have to hoof it from there.

Ha.

Sorcha was busily dragging the human out of the car--by the arm, with her teeth--when it finally seemed to stir, blinking up at her dumb and muzzily. "Th' ********," it slurred, still waking up and not quite believing what it was seeing. "'S a horse."

"Yes," Sorcha said, "and you are a human. Now that we've established that, let's continue this conversation elsewhere, shall we?" Her voice was muffled by the limb in her mouth but it was pretty obvious that she wasn't making typical horse noises.

It took Cerise a moment to put two and two together, but awareness snapped back into place very suddenly. "Jesus <******** Christ talking horse get off of me!" She yelled, smacking Sorcha's nose as hard as she could in the cramped space and pulling herself back into the corner of the seat.

Sorcha pulled back with a pained whinny, pulling back to look at the shrieking, ungrateful wretch of a human with as much distaste as she could muster. "How incredibly rude," she replied disdainfully, petulantly stomping at the ground with a hoof, "and after I dragged you halfway around the world and saved you from a giant monster and drove a car to save your exceedingly ungrateful skin. I volunteered for this, you know!"

Cerise grew ever more incredulous as the horse ranted. "You're a talking horse," she pointed out. "You're a monster too!"

"Excuse me," Sorcha said icily, "I am no monster. I am a demon and I would very much like to go home now and you can find your own way through the portal and there are not enough yays in the world to compensate for your gross ingratitude. Good day."

With that, she turned to prance off, her nose very clearly in the air. Cerise stared after her for a moment, stunned, before physically shaking it off. "Wait," she called after the horse, scrambling out of the backseat. "Did you really drive a car?"

Sorcha paused and turned her head just enough to keep the human in view. "Yes I did, and it is not a feat that I care to repeat."

"Oh," Cerise replied, a moment of awkward silence passing before she continued, "Thanks. I think."

Sorcha snorted delicately, watching as the human cautiously trailed after her. "You going back to wherever it is you came from would be thanks enough."

"I don't know how to get back, or even where we are."

"Through the portal, like I said!"

"What portal?"

The portal that was no longer there, of course. It looked like Sorcha and Cerise would be stuck with each other a little while longer.
