Freshman Quest: Apprentice Guard Duty

After certain events happening (right under their noses!) it was decided there were not enough guards to keep their eyes on everything. The goal of this quest is to start training for guard duty earlier than they have prior to now. All freshman will be assigned to a higher ranking member to show them the ropes.

Quest Notes:
-This is a RP format Quest! No dice, just RP.
- Choose one (or more than one if you'd like!) Scenario below and RP it out.
- The higher ranking officers mentioned are random NPC's, just pretend it is some random member of the group mentoring your character(s).
- You can do this Solo or in a group! Just pretend each of you is assigned a NPC mentor.
- Make sure to make a note somewhere in your post(s) about wearing your Jersey! You are leaving the dorms so the Jersey is required.

Scenarios:

1: You and your mentor spot one of the infected getting a little too close to the dorms. Quietly look around for something (you're choice) to throw as far away from the university as possible - The noise will hopefully attract the infected away! Does it work?

2: Investigate a strange noise you hear. It turns out to be nothing (perhaps just a mouse or maybe a fellow team member playing a prank?) RP out what you find!

3: You discover part of the University where the lights have gone out mysteriously. Making a mental note to tell the leaders, you decide to check it out as well. What do you find? (most likely a false alarm! Just a fizz'd wire~ )

4: On the rooftops of the dorms you peek over the edges to the open grounds below- What do you see? Infected? Burning Objects? Other people? Nothing? Remember to stay quiet if its an infected or other people! No need to give away our position.

5: WILDCARD: You decide what happens! But remember, no battles!

Requirements:
- Being as this is RP format, 800 words is required to consider this quest complete!
- If a single person is doing this, write either a one post solo or a multi post solo-thread if desired!
- If in a group, 800 words is still required per person total.

Rewards:
- Upon completing this quest each person will receive +4 Credits! (If in a group EVERYONE needs to meet the 800 word requirement before you can claim credits!)
- If you complete more than one of the Scenarios, add +1 Credit (Max of 5 credits total for this quest.)

Liam was pulling his jersey over his head and adjusting the hood of his hoody through the neck of it, making sure it lay flat, with no weird bunches under it. Out side they were required, though the young man usually had his on, even when in the dorms. Corey had wanted them to wear them, it cost him nothing to do that, so he did it.

His mentor, a tall, stony faced individual that Liam couldn't recall the name of, was walking a little ahead of him. They were headed out to the field where apparently they'd be meeting up with another mentor/mentee team.

So far his mentor had not bothered to say much to him. Hell, he hadn't done much more than greet him. It seemed terribly rude, and Liam had to wonder if it had to do with the fact that he was limping heavily and slowing the whole progression down.

Probably.

Cerise really hadn't wanted to pull guard duty, too afraid of what was happening outside of the relative security of the university to want to go out and see it for herself. Everyone was being forced to do things they didn't want to do now, though, for the greater good, to ensure their survival, and whatever other platitudes her "mentor", Tori, would have guilted her with to ensure her compliance. Thankfully, she didn't seem to have much to say after Cerise had finally agreed to go with her, though her silence had a certain smugness to it that made Cerise wish she had just shut the door in her face.

The weather was startlingly nice; fresh air and sunshine had been easy things to forget when survival in seclusion took priority. It was almost pleasant, even with the ever-lingering threat of the infected. Cerise even had half of a smile for the other students as she and Tori met up with them, and it was entirely real and unforced.

Liam smiled back as they got close enough to him to realize who he'd been spending the next couple hours with, lifting a hand to wave at Cerise. "Hey, looks like we lucked out on the weather, eh?" It was kind of beautiful out, something they didn't get to enjoy much anymore.

"So where should we go first?" This was directed as much to Cerise as it was to either mentor, brows arched in question. Liam hadn't done much guard-duty before now, and what he had down had been done with a mento that had been very much in charge, and hadn't let him down a damn thing. He'd pretty much just been along for the ride. At the time he hadn't minded, now he considered a loss of experience.

Ah well, he'd get some now.

"Sure did," Cerise agreed. "I missed the sun," she sighed, indulging in the feel of it on her face for a moment.

Back inside would have been her immediate answer to Liam's question, but that wasn't really an option, unfortunately. "We could take a walk around the perimeter," Cerise suggested. "See if there are any holes in the fences where the infected could get through so someone can fix them later."

Another glance up at their mentors, but neither of them indicated that Cerise's idea was a bad one, so he flashed her a smile. "Sure, that sounds like a good idea." There was four of them, He had a crowbar hanging from one of his belt loops, and the mentors looked like they were both armed as well. They should be just fine.

It then occurred to him that this job would require a lot of walking, and that was something he wasn't very good at at the moment. "Ah." Sheepishly, he rubbed at the back of his neck, offering an apologetic look. "If you don't mind walking a little on the slower side, I mean. My leg got injured at the barricade, so I'm not very fast at the moment." A grimace, blue eyes skittering off to the side. "I'd understand if you didn't want to hang back. Could get your duty over faster if you didn't"

Cerise gave Liam a quick once-over and a sympathetic nod. "Staying out here a little longer instead of cooped up in the building?" She tsked. "Such a hardship." Her tone implied that it was anything but, and though she had been reluctant to take up patrol in the first place, she found herself quickly warming up to it, if for no other reason than the fresh air. "Let us know if you start hurting too much, though, and we can go back."

Liam offered a very relieved smile. "I should be alright, as long as we move slow." Which wasn't technically true, but he'd been walking around on the injury for half the day now, and he wasn't about to start complaining now. Nor was he going to make himself a burden to the group. If everyone else could continue working with their own injuries, Liam could as well.

Still smiling, The slowest of their group started towards the fence so they could follow it, looking for holes.

"We can do slow," Cerise assured Liam, "unless you see an infected, and then we're gonna have to do run like hell." The fence seemed to be okay, but they were still close to the buildings.

"Or we can try to send it away. I saw someone else do that, throwing rocks over the fence to make them think there was something out away from the campus."

He paused, head turning to the side as if he were listening. "Did you hear that?" It was hard to tell what it was, but it sounded as if it were coming from the other side of the athletic department. "We should probably check that out."

"Really?" Cerise perked up at that, contemplating how useful that would be. They were monsters, yes, but maybe they weren't all that smart. How fortuitous for them, then, that they were a bunch of smart people. In theory, anyway.

She blinked back to awareness as Liam claimed to have heard something. "What?" Cerise asked, and then, "What?!" again as Liam's suggestion registered. "No, no, that's--we shouldn't do that, what if it's one of the infected? A-and if it is, then you can't run from it!" She shook her head subtly, already shuffling backwards. Suddenly she wanted nothing more than to be back inside, the nice weather ruined by the prospect of whatever else shared the day with them.

Liam frowned as Cerise's enthusiasm for their post died out almost instantly at the idea of investigating a noise. Hands up, he took a step towards her as if he meant to touch her arms in a reassuring manner. "Hey it'll be okay. I've got a weapon, so do out mentors. It might not be anything." If they were lucky it wouldn't be anything. "And this is our job at the moment, isn't it?"

Reassuring her was almost reassuring himself. Liam didn't want to be anywhere near the undying or infected, but he understood that one person not doing their job could literally put every single person on the campus in danger. All it took was one shambling menace creeping past their defenses. Just one.

"We can do this. I'll keep you safe, alright?" Here he'd smile, all self deprecating and earnest.

Cerise let Liam stop her backwards retreat, allowing his placating words to soothe her growing anxiety. It was stupid to be so upset when she was in a group of others in broad daylight, and she was mad and frustrated and ashamed that she had to be coaxed into doing her duty like a frightened child. It wasn't that there was nothing to be afraid of--there was everything to be afraid of--but everyone else had sucked it up and moved ahead and she could, too. She had to, because the alternatives didn't bear thinking about.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out in a shaky exhale. Another, and she sighed it out much more smoothly. She opened her eyes and looked into Liam's giving him a tight, sheepish grin and a nod. "We can do this," she repeated. "We'll be okay. Sorry."

"There, that's better," he grinned at her, letting his hands fall away from her arms and back to his sides. "We can definitely handle this."

Just to be safe, he pulled the crowbar from his belt loops, waggling at her before starting to head, slowly, in the direction the sound had come from. "I think it came from around the side of the athletic supplies shed.."

"We can do this," Cerise said, like maybe saying it often enough would make it true. False confidence was better than none, she supposed, squaring her shoulders and even daring to take the lead, by a step or two, to the supplies shed.

Now that they were closer, she could hear something rustling. It didn't sound very coordinated, whatever it was. Cerise cautiously peered around the corner of the building--and abruptly laughed in relief as she saw a raccoon looting an abandoned trash can.
