• [ GROWTH • applications ] •

Staff will be looking over applications and taking note of character development. Only after your quest has been approved will you be entered into an available artist slot, based on your preferences. If we think your character isn't quite ready for growth, we will send you a PM with feedback. This thread will be locked when slots are closed.

There is a cool-down period of one slot opening after you apply for and receive your growth. This means that you may not apply for growth for one slot cycle after you receive your growth. This is to prevent people from rushing their requirements.
For more detailed information on criteria for growth, please see the
Growth Requirements and Information thread.

Any changes to your character's appearance?
As a captain, Van oversees intelligence and black operations, rather than melee/battle activities. She should be outfitted for such covert ops and for small skirmishes instead of heavy warfare. In a few words, her captain style is authoritative yet chic, and flashy/edgy with some soft elements. Seeing as she spends more time in an office or undercover than out fighting the battles, she can afford to be fashionable, but should still be battle-friendly. Her clothes continue to be of Vietnamese influence, and Van is still as fashion-forward about them as ever (ie. not traditional). The rest is up to you!

Her captain stage weapon is still a pair of butterfly swords. They are just more fancy and expensive than her starter ones from the fighter stage, perhaps with a tiger or leopard imprinted on the steel, as indicative of her martial arts style... or like tassels. At your discretion~

Van's wavy hair is a little longer these days, reaching a bit past shoulder length when tied up. I still love that smoldering expression she has going, and that is how she behaves to this day.

Reasons for growth:
Before Van became a fighter, she was never entirely sure why she was a Legionnaire, and possessed no sense of loyalty other than to herself and to her family. Even after her brother was abducted, she felt little hatred towards the Nobles. Since the Emperor's death, however, and through numerous unfavorable run-ins with Nobles such as Kiran and Bataar, she was finally won over. At the end of her fighter stage, Van is convinced of her alignment to the Legion. However, this brings her loyalty to her family up to question.

Previously, there had never been a dispute as to what was more important to the woman. She put everything aside to retrieve her brother, vowing not to stop until she either found him or avenged him. After fighting tooth and nail as a fighter to win her brother back from the Nobles, though, she discovered that he's defected from the Emperor's Legion, and now serves the Nobles as a captain. Van's captain stage will explore a personal conflict between loyalty to the Legion, and loyalty to her family - namely, her brother.

Her loyalty to the Legion, though newfound, is not blind. She continues to look for the good and bad in both factions, justifying her falling in love with Noble captain Raiden while on an op to betray him, and leading her to allow Bataar to move in with her with the intention of stealing information from him. Yet amidst all of these two-faced relationships, Van has managed to make a friend in Sara, the soul conduit. Though she is decidedly opposite from the fighter in personality, each day they spend together brings them closer, and Van trusts her more each time they hang out. It's about time; the woman would have gone crazy in loneliness long ago if it weren't for Sara.

Van has also matured in her fighting prowess, learning what her strengths are and capitalizing on those. She has discovered talent in the intelligence and covert ops; her record in undercover reconnaissance missions is an unmatched 100%. Secondary to this skill set is her ability to perform hit missions. She's learned that she simply does not have the force of will and brute strength to last long in head-to-head battles (see win/loss ratio lol), and thus she will be overseeing covert and black ops as a captain instead.

Her fighter stage marks the beginning of a spiritual awareness that continues well into her captain stage. While Van is not religious by any means, she spends more time meditating at the shrines and reflecting on the goddess than ever. This change exhibits itself in her fighting style. Van is slowly converting from her mixed martial arts (quan khi dao) to Shaolin kung fu, preferring the leopard animal style.

Any changes to your characters appearance?
Her hair would have grown longer, and as she is a proper lady of the noble retainer, she styles and dresses herself in suitable high class attire. Her hair would be styled more complicated, something like this and this. She can either have grown out her bangs, so they'd be longer and styled more, or they may remain the same, it's up to the artist, I would like some of her hair falling in the back and around her shoulders though. For clothing, perhaps something like this or this, though possibly more functional, and in her color scheme. I'm not so picky with the clothing other then fancy and high class, I'm more concerned with the hair.
o 3o I'm hoping to have her clothing look build up to the classical, traditional Chinese princess sort of thing as she grows from stage to stage.

Reasons for growth: In her run as an academy student Shin has had her fair share of experiences, both good and bad, though in her own opinion she's been dealt a hard lot the last year or so, and as a result of the hardships and strain she's experienced she views herself as a harder individual. For the most part this is true, she's far more guarded, but there are certain parts of Shin that are still vulnerable, despite her denial.

At the start of her schooling she was an awkward, temperamental thing. Her personal history with the guardian spirits that did the majority of her raising, as well as the continued distance of her parents and the slim role they play in her life had left her ill equiped to deal with others on a personal level, and she struggled to overcome this hurdle, with quite a lot of success. She's managed to make some deep and long lasting friendships with both Cais and A'Meiya, whom she looks upon as family.

With friendship though came betrayal, not just from supposed allies such as Zhong-Xian, but in her first love, Huang-fu. She gave the young man her heart, and upon discovering her allegiance he stomped on that precious gift and left her, only to take a noble b*****d as his lover some time later. Shin will never forgive the legion fighter, and she's vowed to repay him the pain he's caused her. A marvelous start to that plan came to fruition when she challenged and brutally beat Huang's love, Kyung. The mongrel offspring of one of the most predominant figures to the noble faction. It was a start, and very satisfying, but it's still not even close to enough. Haung-fu will know pain if it's the last thing Shin-Mu does.

Through these trials and tribulations Shin has experienced battle, and learned that while effective, her personal brand of magic, and the method in which she delivers it, are not adequate. Something that was driven painfully home when she was abducted and assaulted by two cut throat bandits. She couldn't get to her dizi, and without that medium she was little better then helpless to defend herself. Only through the intervention of a spirit with a unique adaptation on soul magic was the girl able to free herself. The spirit, not quite malevolent, has taken root inside the young noble, and as of yet Shin doesn't know what to do about it. While she does not enjoy being possessed, or the helplessness that sometimes raises with it, she is very eager to learn the style of fighting perfected by the deceased priestess now residing within her.
