K'ro Given Name: Kyros Rider Name: K'ro Age: 21 Sexual Orientation: Bi-sexual Craft/Rank: Jr. Weyrling History: Practically born on a boat, Kyros’ family lived in a fair sized fishing hold almost due north of Trine Weyr. He knew how to handle a little row boat not long after he knew how to walk, and became a cabin boy on his uncle’s fishing ship aged eight. When he turned twelve he became an official fishercraft apprentice, and had to start leaning more than how to scramble up and down rigging and stare up at the wheeling gulls with envy. He took to it well enough, an average student all around until he hit puberty when he began to grow both very tall and very powerful. While this, of course, didn’t help him at all with theory, it did make the practicalities of hard work on a ship easier. It made living on one a lot harder, but Kyros accepted the discomfort as he accepted most things; with quiet equanimity. He continued to progress in his studies at a normal rate, and at twenty turns he was just about ready to walk the tables when he was searched to Trine Weyr. Deciding he could defer his progression to journeyman to take the chance of standing for a clutch, Kyros went willingly.
When he arrived, he not only found that there were two clutches on the sands, but that emotions were running high due to the 'invasion' of Benden riders and healers. Not sure what to make of the situation, Kyros kept out of as much of the gossiping, speculating, and ranting as possible. He was unsure what to make of the disaster of crimson Alumath's death; in a way he could see that it was Benden's fault, and yet it was only one bronze rider who was really to blame... In the end, he opted to keep out of the way of anyone who felt too strongly about the subject and made it to the hatching in one piece, where he Impressed to green Viridith.
Height: 6'2" Build: Very powerful Skin: Tanned, especially on the face and torso Hair: Dark auburn, straight, short Eyes: Dark blue Detailed Description: A great brute of a man, Kyros stands six foot two inches high and is strong-jawed and powerfully muscled. His dark auburn hair is kept short, and from the waist up he is darkly tanned from spending his life largely shirtless aboard ships. Marks from that rough life are scattered here and there on his hands and arms; even a fairly small cut scars up well when exposed to salt water. All in all he cuts a rather intimidating figure, until that is you notice the calmness of his expression, and the steadiness in his dark blue eyes. For all of his size and obvious physical hardness, careful inspection will reveal that this man is no brute after all.
Keywords: Calm, steady, stubborn, grudge bearer Character tracks: Detailed Personality: Kyros is like a deep body of calm water; collected, and with a great stillness about him. He smiles quite frequently but seldom grins, and almost never actually laughs aloud. Equally, while he’ll scowl a little at something he finds foolish or annoying, he won’t raise his voice or show signs of real aggression. Over all, if you drop an emotional rock into this deep lake you might well see a few ripples in his expression but things will soon calm down again and he won’t rise to it. The stone, however, will remain at the bottom for a long time; Kyros has a long memory both for cruelty and for kindness, and while he will never flare up at somebody he feels has wronged him he will quite happily do them down when the chance arises. It doesn’t have to have been a particularly major offense to get onto his quietly disliked list, but it does take a lot to get off it again. Equally, however, it doesn’t take very much to make Kyros decide he likes somebody, and he can be taken advantage of for quite some time before he finally decides that person isn’t worth his time after all.
It takes quite a long time for him to change his mind about anything in fact; he is rather a stubborn man, but again never aggressively so. He’ll tell you what he thinks, why he thinks it, and if you don’t like it you had better have a few candlemarks spare and some really good arguments if you want to change his opinion. You’d better come equipped with a good dose of patience as well; Kyros has absolutely no respect for people who get themselves worked up about things, and will utterly ignore anything someone might have to say if they start shouting at him or otherwise getting in a tiz. He does have reasonable respect for legitimate authority, however, so while he might think a superior of his is an idiot for roaring orders and stamping about he’ll still do as he’s told. His stubbornness and quietness translates to stoic toughness too; no matter what he’ll push himself on to finish a job alone; he won’t ask anyone for help until it’s pretty well too late, or mention an injury that might keep him from doing a job he’s been assigned. So far as he sees it, the job he’s given is his job and if he’s sick or hurt that’s his issue not anyone else’s. While he isn’t stupid by and large, he never seems to think far enough on this score to realize that struggling along and probably ending up making himself worse and or doing a bad job doesn’t benefit or impress anyone in the end.
In a group situation Kyros is comfortable with leading if he knows what he’s doing, but he won’t try to take control if he’s clueless about the situation. If somebody he thinks knows less than he/somebody else in the group does tries to take charge however, Kyros will calmly but firmly tell the perceived usurper to back down. If they don’t listen, he might well gently but firmly restrain them physically; while he’s no brute and has never been known to start an actual fight, he isn’t afraid to use his size and power to his advantage if he thinks somebody is being an idiot. If he is in a situation when he isn’t the best for leading, he is a good mediator and calming influence. He never leaps right into action or panics about anything, and while this means that he couldn’t be the one to drive a group onward towards a desperate goal, he could come up beside somebody struggling with the pace or stress and reassure them with his large calm presence.
While Kyros is calm and steady, he certainly isn’t passionless; he adores the sea and the sky, and if asked he will speak with soft intensity about the beautiful sights he has seen out on long voyages, his dreams of flying free like a gull, or anything else that really grabs his interest for that matter. He has plenty of well-handled passion in other areas as well; while he isn’t desperately handsome he has pretty enough eyes and a nice body, and that along with his strong yet soft nature has drawn more than a few ladies into bed with him over the turns. Out at sea it’s drawn a few gentlemen in too... well, sailors, but still, the point is that Kyros has slept with a large number of different people, but avoided a serious relationship. By and large his flings haven’t resulted in any bad feelings, as he’s sure to make it clear that he isn’t looking for a relationship right at the start, and has avoided sleeping with anyone too important. While he’s back at the Hold it would be very hard to get even a hint that he’s as interested in men as he is in women and he doesn’t mention of it of his own accord, but if he is asked he won’t lie. Lying is something Kyros never does, not even to keep himself or a friend out of serious trouble; the truth the the truth, and it is just as important to him as it is to a member of the runnercraft. People who do lie, or twist the truth, can expect to earn his stony disapproval, and will find themselves very hard pressed to redeem themselves in his eyes.

Viridith Jr. WeyrlingSr. WeyrlingDescription: Viridith is near stick thin, and appears to be almost entirely made up of legs, wings, and tail. At rest she tends to stand or sit absolutely stock still, eerily so some might say. In motion she looks like a predator, pure and simple, and those unfamiliar with her stalking gait might be inclined not to let her out of their sight.
Keywords: Focused, patient, stubborn, devoted Character tracks: Extended Personality: If nothing else can be said for this green, it is that she is patient and deliberate -- because if you try to hurry her, absolutely nothing good can come of it. Because when hurried, that patience turns almost predatory. But there's one good thing about that -- a single-minded determination can come in handy in a rough situation. There's a certain stillness about Viridith that can make her come off as strange and occasionally distressing to people who don't know her well. She always seems as if she's just on the edge of pouncing -- but Hers will have to learn well the difference between the actual desire to pounce and Viridith's simple temperament.
There is a lot about Viridith that is likely to boggle Hers, but once she has connected, it's forever and exclusive. That same single-mindedness carries over into her bond, and she can be extremely possessive, almost to the point of violence. This is the only thing that can drive her out of her almost calculating demeanor -- her rider belongs to her, and if anyone tries to come between them, it is highly unlikely to go well for that person. She would never hurt a human, but she can certainly make a lot of noise when she is angry.
For Viridith, flights are something more to be calculated. Any male that she lets catch her had better put on one amazing show, or he's likely to wind up very disappointed and a bit the worse for the wear at the end! Displays of courtship are what Viridith is all about, and so premeditation is key after the first time. She'll rise like clockwork, so at least she'll be predictable!
Why Me!? Viridith needed someone who could understand her – especially in learning to tell the difference between a strolling prowl and intent to pursue that dangerous air. She’s not an angry soul, but she certainly is a collected and controlled one. His patience, his calm approach will be the supports to her emotional towers and she will build them high in his honour. She is, after all, quite devoted.
His stubbornness also speaks to her own might stubborn streak and this is both a strength and a weakness for this pair – once they set their mind, its going to be nigh impossible for anyone to change their course. That said, there’s potential there, really, but they have to learn some flexibility if that strong drive is to be turned into something golden.
Additionally, his more whimsical side will help balance this serious green out, perhaps help to uncoil that predatory charm just a touch. Her preference for courtship before Flight maybe also help Kyros build more lasting relations and bring romance, more than just lust, into his flings. Over all, the two are another one of those matches that just make sense and anybody who gets to know either will see why Green Viridith chose Kyros.
The Praying Mantis: Contrary to popular belief, in the wild the female mantis seldom bites off the male's head during copulation; by and large this behavior only occurs in laboratory settings. If left undisturbed, praying mantis actually engage in complex courtship dances, and provided the female is well fed the male will usually live to mate another day. Most of a mantis' diet is made up of other insects, but larger species will also prey on lizards, rodents, birds, snakes, and fish; so long as they can catch, kill, and devour it and mantis will eat it.
When threatened, a mantis will stand up tall and spread its wings to make itself look larger. If the threat persists, the mantis will make a hissing sound and lash out with its forelegs or try to bite.

The Impression Dragonflight Pern As the dragon made his Impression, more eggs had begun to wiggle and crack and roll about. A brilliantly marked blue burst from the Distorted Reflection egg and shook himself free of the mess as he craned his neck and seemed to congratulate Violith.
He bounced away, however, as a green rolled out of the Bared Fangs egg and nipped at the blue before slowly rising with all the grace of a seasoned predator. The two were stark contrasts to each other and held so very much promise. TawnyAngel ...Ah well, not the brown, but maybe the green or blue? Kyros studied them carefully, frowning slightly at the green as she snapped at the other dragonet. It was... he supposed it was like a new pack of canines sorting out the pecking order, or a crowd of kids. Sometimes, if you were willing to show your teeth, size didn't keep you from dominating... Still, he guessed she could be for him; right now, given the little he knew, he was ruling out only by colour, i.e. golds and bronzes. Anything else, for whatever reason, might look to him. Dragonflight Pern After that initial encounter, the two dragonets parted way with relatively little trouble and the green prowled towards the boys, her gait more measured then uncertain. Just like the brown before her, she was taking the measure of each of the boys her gaze passed over, leaving a distinct impression of 'ready to pounce' rather then 'looking for Hers'. It was unsettling but it was only a feeling - she wasn't growling, had no teeth bared, just that uncanny prowl.
And the blue... the blue trotted over to the girls and nosed a few of the younger ones, even pushing one poor girl over in his enthusiasm. Her cry of surprise startled him and he jumped back, keening. Did His see that? He hadn't meant to!
His gaze shifted away from the girl he'd knocked over then and played over the others... His was here somewhere....
The blue pushed his way through the anxious girls - several dragons had hatched and none, including the gold, had come their way, surely he'd be one! They weren't His, not at all..... not that one, or that one... or that one. Or that one.
His gaze flicked through them, seemed to see right into the truth of them, and then it froze. That.... he padded closer, head tilting to the side, that... he moved closer. Yes! Yes it was! There was His!
He broke into a haphazard run then as he fluttered his brilliant wings and tackled Nasuyumi.
More eggs began to crack and fall and roll but only one dragonet saw fit to actually emerge (from the Mellow Daisy) at that point and it was a pretty green, large and healthy, and she wobbled about, confused.
As her sister tried to find her way, the other green continued to creep among the boys, rearing up before several boys, her height enough to make her intimidating if she suddenly broke into action for there was a sense of tight control about this one, and the potential for incredible bursts of activity. TawnyAngel Humm... He wasn't sure he was entirely comfortable with how that green was looking at them. She might only just come up to his knees, but the danger of rampaging dragonets had been firmly hammered into his head. Some of the other candidates had scars from getting in the way of an angry or even just clumsy hatchling. If she did decide to kick off and attack somebody, Kyros was aware that he was one of the bigger targets around. He was almost aware, however, that if necessary he could probably leap over and outrun the stalking green.
In the end he didn't honestly think she would deliberately attack anyone, but she had an air of taught energy about her, and a pretty impressive scar on his left side spoke of what happened when tense energy was suddenly released. Overstretched rope or tightly focused dragonet, neither was something you wanted to get in the way of when it snapped. Keeping his weight light on his feet, Kyros watched the creeping green carefully while trying to keep her sister in mind at the same time. Dragonflight Pern As the green appraised the boys, she felt one in particular and swung her gaze round, body following, as she searched for that echoed emotion. There... somewhere.
There! Her gaze caught Kyros' and the coiled tension was released as she bounded across the Sands, tearing through Candidates foolish enough to get in her way, and reared up tall, forelimbs extended, wings spread wide. She'd found Hers!
"Kyrosmine, Your Viridith is very hungry." Her introduction might have been short, but it was too the point and unhurried in its lilt. TawnyAngel Oh shi-
....Oh.
Wow.
As the green he had considered a threat a heartbeat ago made her final approach, Kyros opened his arms and embraced her as she placed her forefeet on his chest.
"Viridith... We'd better get you some food then."
"Yes," Viridith responded, wrapping her wings around Hers and giving him an nudge, "we had." So saying, she dropped back to the ground and set off beside her rider towards the meat tables.
...Had this actually just happened? Had he actually Impressed? Well, obviously he had, but the reality of it hadn't sunk in just yet. He was going to fly. He was going to fly with Viridith. Viridith. He felt... he felt as though the name had been somewhere inside him his whole life. "You know, I didn't think you'd be mine with how you came out of that egg," he told his lifemate, wondering how you did that whole mindspeaking thing anyway.
"Just think it, I'll hear you. As for the other part... I did not want to be hurried, that's all." As they reached the tables Viridith sat down, and raised her head to regard Hers steadily. "Take your time," she told him, "pick the best meat, not the first bit you see."
"Mmh," Kyros looked down at his partner and smiled softly. "I will."

Patience. If there's one thing I've learned in my life, it's that patience is the way to go. Nobody catches fish by jerking their line back the moment they cast it, by hauling their nets up in a rush so that the catch spills. While I'm not totally against the idea of using the ancientcraft technologies, I am against rushing into using them. For now, I believe we should trust in the farmcraft; I would want to know more about the techniques proposed by the master ancientcrafter before I entrusted the fate of the world to them, I would want to see a lot of tests done. A decision, however, is needed now, and so Viridith and I feel we must cast our vote against using the old technologies. Simply said, we do not know enough about them. I believe in the farmcraft, we shall have results in the end, and in the meantime the golds and crimsons of the south are fertile. We shall get there in the end. Patience.
