Feather-Soft Razors: See those soft, cute little feathers at the end of each of her tails? They aren't always so soft. This little girl can turn them into razor-sharp metal blades. Ouch.

Maggie Reflects

Mommy. Mama. Mother. They're terms of endearment for a female parent. Margret hadn't been born with one of those, but she had been given to a father. When she'd first arrived, the toddler had felt no intrinsic need to have two parents. She hadn't felt abnormal or out of place – there were plenty of kids on Gaia with only one parent and several with none. It was just her and her Daddy, really, and that's all there needed to be.

Well no, not quite. In truth, it was her and her Daddy and sometimes her Daddy's brothers. Vance had several brothers, all with varying professions, including one who fixed cars. They were all princes, but none had to take on something like being a ruler just yet so they were allowed to work, and go to places like Gaia to get children. It was an exercise in responsibility, he'd explained to Maggie one day, learning to care for a kid since one day they'd be having and raising an heir. Maggie couldn't be Vance's heir because she was a girl and because she wasn't his kid by blood – but he still said he loved her, which was good enough.

Maggie'd been happy with her little family. Her father was decidedly more regal than she was, but he let her play the way she wanted and took her out to see things she wanted to see. Then, it'd been so strange, things had changed in one night.

The toddler had met a little boy – he was her age but weird, with blonde hair and glowy things that followed him. It'd been after spending a weekend with her Grandmama and her Uncles, seeing how her Daddy acted with his brothers and parents. Margret'd met Iggy and he'd been like her – a kid with only one parent. She'd had a stroke of that genius some children sometimes have flashes from and decided to declare him her brother and that they would share parents – his Mommy would be her's and her Daddy would be his. Both parents had found it weird but went along with it, taking the two of them out for cocoa.

She'd met him again later, at a strange party thrown by the people who made her. The toddler had gone skating with her friend while their parents talked. It was nice and they'd gotten to spend more time together after that, since her Dad had exchanged numbers with Mommy Blaice so they could meet up again in future.

Life'd been simple and dull for a bit, with Daddy training for work and all, but Maggie enjoyed it just the same. He'd bought her a soccer ball, and she practiced kicking it around the house and watched games on the TV, seeing the things that went on and figuring parts of it out – mostly that there were guys in one color that tried to kick the ball in the net, and guys in another color who tried to keep it out of the net. She'd be allowed to play for a few hours with other kids in a small day care type place, then Daddy'd come get her and take her home. He was supposed to be “in training” but she didn't totally understand for what, at least, not for a bit.

Vance was a very well known skater where he came from. Not Olympic quality, but they didn't exactly have Olympics where he came from anyway. He was very skilled as an athlete and had been training hard for a rather large competition. Maggie was still his first priority but when she was safe and happy spending time playing at the day center for a few weeks, his extra training wasn't a problem.

The day his competition came around, the toddler got to sit in the front row with her Uncle Chet and watch as her Daddy skated around to a very sad sounding song about dancing and love. He looked different from usual, his blonde hair specially brushed and done to fall in his face just the right way, and a tight dark outfit with funny spangles on it adorning his chest, a puffy white sleeved shirt under it. Maggie wondered if he was cold like that, since the ice was all frozy and she was kinda cold, having to wear a jacket over her clothes.

Maggie got to hug Vance and sit with him while he waited for his scores, trying to relax. They watched the other skaters together, though her Daddy was mostly just napping, trying to ignore them. But Maggie got to sit with him and watch, which was nice. But then she had to go back to sitting with Uncle Chet while her Daddy did another program – this time he was wearing some funny blue outfit with lotsa frills.

These competitions went on for a few days, and her Dad did a bunch of different dances in them. Maggie thought this was cool. Especially when she got to go stand with him on the podium as he got given a few medals for doing so well, and he even let her wear one! They got to take a lap around the ice together after that, but he carried her rather than making her skate. It was fun zooming along the ice up on her Daddy's shoulders while he spun around and circled it to people cheering and throwing flowers – Maggie even caught a teddybear someone tossed!

The little girl smiled. Skating with her Daddy was fun, but it wasn't for her. That was okay though – her family was okay being different. And she got to show Iggy the pretty gold medal her Daddy let her keep, so that was cool right?

The Fancy Blue Hat

Trying to get Margret to actually dress up – more specifically, dress up like a female – had been a complete failure. Instead of her finding a cute dress to wear on Holidays and to special events, she'd found a boy who dressed in girl's clothing and deemed it acceptable for her to always dress like a boy. Vance had decided he might as well go along with her ideals at this point – he could compromise after all, and if she wasn't willing to dress like a girl, he could at least try to get her to dress like a nice boy.

The blonde had taken his daughter to a more extravagant store than just the local WalMart this time. While this place did have some ridiculously fancy and fine pieces, they also stocked some neat and lovely men's clothing. And if he was letting her run wild anywhere to get formal wear, it might as well be here.

Maggie was astounded by the sheer number of clothes here. Oh she was SO going to have to tell Iggy about this when she was home! The girl's eyes were wide as she stared around at the fancy suits and weird materials for a few moments before the bird girl was off like a shot. For such a boyish toddler, Margret was very choosy about her “fancy” materials, feeling different fabrics and trying to figure out what would and wouldn't be comfortable. Then – she saw IT.

There on a large rack was what had to be the most beautiful item she'd ever laid eyes on. A large blue hat with an oddly curved brim and a large feather stuck from the band. She walked slowly to the counter, looking up at it in wonder and was too dumbstruck to answer for a few moments when the cashier asked her if she'd like to try anything.

“Y-yes. Can I tries that hat?” Maggie asked, pointing to the blue one.

“This? Ah yes, it's modeled after one of the Dappy Dandy hats.” the cashier explained helping her to put on the large fancy item. Maggie smiled, feeling it's weight settle over her head, and adjusting it a bit so it didn't cover her eyes. She already felt different just wearing it, standing up a bit straighter and walking over to show her Daddy.

“Chu think?” she asked, holding the end of it as she looked up, like she sometimes saw Uncle Trevor do.

“Very fancy.” he agreed, laughing. “But you need a coat to go with it.” he told her.

“SO I CAN GET IT?” the excitement in her voice was just astronomical, and she was loud enough for Vance to burst out laughing at her childish glee.

“Yeah kiddo, come on. Let's fine you some coats and pants.”

Maggie's Two Homes

The costumes in her dad's closet were covered in sequins and other shiny objects. They were otherwise plain and tight, but the strange little doodads attracted her attention so much.

His regal clothes on his homeworld, when they visited there, were grand and sleek. Made of silks and satins, flowing bits and ruffles, flares and buttons. But they all seemed so tame and streamlined compared to the tacky little designs on his skating costumes.

Margret often found people around her father's far away home and his work were very much the same – very fancy showy people. They were more elegant and political at the one than the other, but it was still very flashy.

Following Vance to shows or to court wasn't so bad on either end. He took very good care of her, and if he didn't, he made sure at least someone did. She was allowed seats where she could see things well, and after court cases allowed to ask all the questions she liked. She was even allowed to help him pick the themes of his routines at times.

Her father spent a lot of his time practicing, training for his sport on this world. He explained it was because his world was so far away that time was different but she also thought it was because he enjoyed practice. His home world was very practiced and methodical, but loved trivial sports and games and casinos were accessible even to young children.

The girl had often went with a few other local youngsters from the palace to Casinos and such when visiting her father's home of Cazari. They very different from Gaia's casinos, that she saw now and then. The themes were much more grand and wild, each with its own set of rules, and yet children were allowed in and given their shot at things. Women in outfits that covered teeny outfits that seemed to be made of nothing but sequins flirted with grownups and gave winks to young boys who passed wanting a glance at the grown ladies, but nothing more.

Maggie tended to play with the kids who preferred sports to shows, and would be more found upstairs trying to learn to kick balls or play strange netted games from other children. But once, she had ventured into a show and watched a woman do an elaborate song and dance number in an outfit of purely silver sequins, a silky skirt and tons of giant white feathers. During part of the song she had walked to Maggie's table and the girl had been allowed to reach up and pet the feathers, wiggling her tail a little to join in the dance. While she wasn't allowed into the fully adult shows, this had still been something strange and interesting to her.

In the courts of Cazari, when her father helped hold trial with the other princes over criminals who had broken the strange laws of the place, Maggie learned plenty about the strange codes of conduct and rules of the place. It was a glimpse of society to her, and what was considered right and wrong in different places. At home, her father was considered to be in a skilled but flamboyant profession – but after seeing showgirls and the places of play in Cazari, the girl couldn't help but think his work was tame and regulated.

Sometimes Vance would take Margret on the ice with him, let her take a few turns. It was wobbly and not something she liked, but with her father she could understand the control of it. He was a very reserved person, for a Cazari, and that was probably why he spent so much time on Gaia. He liked the seemingly simple and “prudish” ethics of the place and being content with how little weight his actions held here.

The duality was almost welcome for Maggie. At her home on Gaia, she was just Maggie – little girl of the skillful figure skater Vance Altressor, learning with his trainers and being supportive. At her home on Cazari, she was the little princess-adopt Lady Maggie, daughter of Prince Vance Altressor, and a promising study of the laws. In Cazari, royalty and nobility – by blood or adoption – were to take on important societal jobs. They could have their pleasures on the side so long as they did something such as community management or environmental care or, in Vance's case, holding court.

Cazari courts did not feature a single judge and jury. Those who had studied the law were to convene in the area and discuss things, both on moral and ethical levels and take into consideration the crimes to determine fair punishments. There were no “lawyers” - merely facts, evidence, people who did investigations and held testimony, and it was all presented to the court to debate, discuss and decide upon. People were allowed to attend provided they followed certain guidelines – they were not to speak out of turn and ask or say things if they could not back it up or didn't have a pertinent reason for making their question or comment relevant to the case. Apprentices and nobles' children could attend provided they followed these guidelines or else they were to be expelled. Court hearings were also generally not publicized, since those not involved really didn't need to know unless they were told by an involved party.

Maggie got to sit in on court with her father on many occasions, generally just keeping quiet. However, she did pick things up now and then and on one occasion stood to ask a man on trial if he was aware that he had changed his story in a very significant way on each of the four repetitions he'd given. The girl had immediately sat back down and been given a few nods from the people on the court that day and felt just a little bit proud for having spotted that.

On one occasion she asked her father about Gaian courts and if they were at all similar to Cazari ones. Vance had laughed and shook his head, finding her a news show to watch on the subject. It hadn't at all been what she expected, but in some ways, Maggie found it just as fascinating.
