Jasrai Name: Jasrai Age: 21 Gender: female Sexual Orientation: heterosexual Craft: none Rank: wingrider in T'pan's wing
Character Tracks: "How Soon is Now?" - Love Spit Love "I'm Not That Girl" - Wicked
Appearance: For all that Jasrai will be the first to say that she's plain, homely, unattractive, and whatever other unflattering adjectives she can come up with on the spot, she really isn't. She's correct, however, in her assessment that she isn't beautiful. The best word for her is striking, and that's only when she puts effort into her appearance. Otherwise she is fairly average.
Jasrai has dark hair that she has allowed to grow long. She isn't quite vain about her hair, because it refuses to be smooth, silky, or shiny, but she's strongly opposed to the idea of cutting it. Her reasoning is that she would look like a man with short hair. In this she is mistaken. Although the lower half of her face is more square than she would like, it is nothing like the masculine lantern jaw she sees when she looks in the mirror. Jasrai also sees a nose that is far too wide, eyes that are far too small, and eyebrows that look like two small, furry somethings have taken up residence on her forehead.
The only part of her face that she actually likes is her mouth, but she will also be the first to point out that her smile is lopsided: one half of her mouth pulls back and the other side curves up. With regard to her other despised features, her nose is a little big, her eyes are proportionate and actually have a slight occidental tilt, and although her eyebrows have the potential to look like furry somethings, they don't because she shapes them. Most of the time Jasrai completely disregards the fact that she's got decent cheekbones because - as she says - they're not always there anyway, meaning she is plump and that makes her cheekbones less prominent than they might be otherwise. One last note about her face: Jasrai's eyebrows are very expressive, as she uses them to convey a great deal, and her eyes are a medium shade of brown that looks a little like dark honey in direct sunlight.
In truth, Jasrai's concerns that she could be mistaken for a boy are completely unfounded. No man has ever had breasts or an a** like hers. If it wasn't for the fact that she really is plump (her adjective of choice is fat), Jasrai could be a knockout. She has large breasts and a well-rounded bottom that - unfortunately - lack the requisite tiny waist in between to emphasize their proportions. Not that her stomach is actually round. It's just not concave and there's a lot of squish if she pokes herself. Her legs are maybe a little too short in comparison to her longer torso, but they're pretty solid muscle under a layer of not-so-solid fat. Like someone who used to lead an active life and then switched completely to being sedentary, or someone who leads a life that's not quite active enough to combat a weakness for certain foods.
Jasrai blames her appearance for most of the ills in her life, and believes her appearance is the reason most people don't tend to take much notice of her.
Personality: Jasrai is intelligent and she knows it. There has never been any doubt in her mind that she could probably outwit most of the people she knows who aren't related to her. The problem is, in a family where everyone is intelligent and nobody is free with compliments, she never really learned to value her intellect. She just clings to it, which is something completely different. What she values, because she's observed it's what others tend to value, are good looks and skill with people, which are both things she's somewhat lacking, as far as she's concerned.
In point of fact, Jasrai isn't bad with people. She doesn't like to meet new people because she hates going through the whole "getting to know you" dance and because she can never think of anything interesting to say about herself. Her grandparents are certainly interesting, and she considers both her parents admirable, but she doesn't feel that she's ever done anything particularly remarkable. She is not impressed by her skills or her life story. For someone who likes to be amused by stories - and Jasrai does - this is a major failing. She is convinced that if she had a great friendship like she used to with Morlie or a bit of romance (which she never has) then her life would be more interesting and worthwhile, but the cycle is vicious, and as long as she's reluctant to put herself out there, she's unlikely to have these experiences she craves.
Being an only child and the darling of the grandparent she did know gave Jasrai a sense of entitlement that seems at odds with her lack of self-confidence. It really isn't. She's more than intelligent enough to know what basis different things are judged by, and so she wouldn't take it as an insult to her intelligence that men aren't killing themselves to be with her any more than she would blame her looks for her failure to Impress a dragon before Roseth. That's clearly a personality flaw, as far as she's concerned. Her sense of entitlement, however, can cause her to have strong resentments for those people she perceives as receiving everything without any effort, particularly when it seems they really don't deserve what they get. She is also inclined toward jealousy of people who she thinks are her superiors in areas that matter to her, and tends to avoid such people when she can because being in their exalted presences serves to remind her that she isn't what she wants to be.
An interesting side effect of her lack of self-esteem is that Jasrai is practically fearless when it comes to physical danger and risk (emotional danger and risk being things that terrify her). She doesn't consider herself pretty enough that it would be a shame if she became less attractive, and so she's willing to try anything that seems interesting. It's turned her into a bit of a thrill-seeker at the Weyr, though she pulls all of her stunts solo. For one thing, people at Telgar would not approve of a woman behaving so, and for another thing she doesn't really have anyone to keep her company anyway. There's also the potential for emotional risk in the form of embarrassment if she fails at something in front of people.
Her greatest fear and her greatest desire are mingled together in a somewhat self-defeating fashion: her greatest fear is that she will someday take after he father's father, the murderer, and her greatest desire is to have someone she can share her darker side with without fear of judgment. It doesn't help that she really is intrigued by criminals and crime, having grown up in what used to be Crom, and she's occasionally tempted by the combination of opportunity and her skills which could be applied to minor sorts of crime. Only the thought of the humiliation involved in being caught and then labeled a criminal stops her.
It should be noted, because it is a large part of Jasrai's personality, that she is quite cynical, bordering on pessimism. If you were to ask her about this, she would say that it's a natural side effect of being intelligent. She's also quick to point out her own flaws, particularly physical ones.

History Raised in High Telgar, Jasrai is descended from criminals on both sides, though her parents were neither of them criminally inclined. Her paternal grandfather murdered his wife and oldest child when her father was seven and her maternal grandfather was an accomplished thief who was actually convicted for a theft he didn't commit. Jasrai's parents met by accident, and after establishing a household they saw their parents as infrequently as possible. Their visits tapered of to near non-existence after Jasrai was born, because they didn't want their daughter to be negatively influenced by their parents' respective criminal leanings.
Unfortunately for them, their daughter grew up clever and with a definite lack of regard for social mores. Or, rather, she regarded them with great interest and then took a certain amount of glee in seeing what would happen if she broke with convention. One of the first things she did when she was old enough to be allowed to wander about without supervision was seek out her maternal grandfather, who had served his time in the mines and was thrilled to meet his intelligent granddaughter. He flat-out refused to teach her his former profession, of course, but the games he played with her did give her a number of skills that would have made it easy for her to take up his profession. She learned to have nimble fingers and to observe people, and to notice the things a thief notices: entrances, exits, locks, and that sort of thing.
Jasrai also learned what it was like to be convicted as a criminal from her grandfather, seeing the scars from his work in the mines and hearing his stories about the ills that befell his fellow convicts. It served to convince her that if she ever decided to ply his trade, she'd better make bloody sure she didn't get caught. Despite being intelligent and fairly convinced that she's at least as clever as anyone she's ever met, if not more clever, Jasrai never got up the courage and self-confidence necessary to make any attempt at thievery.
When Jasrai was eighteen her best friend, Morlie, was Searched, but she was sent home even before the hatching, pregnant. Jasrai was among the people who went to meet her on her homecoming, and the dragon who had brought her friend back pointed out to his rider that Jasrai would make a fine candidate. It was not a pretty scene, actually. Morlie got it into her head that the rider (who Jasrai later learned was the father of Morlie's child) was being spiteful and had deliberately selected her best friend to go to the Weyr so that she would suffer even more. Jasrai went to the Weyr anyway, encouraged by her parents, who thought it might be good for her self-esteem to have the chance to Impress a dragon. Like most parents, they assumed simply being Searched was equal to Impressing, and it would be a sure thing.
It wasn't. Jasrai remained at the Weyr after her first hatching mainly because she'd only been there a few sevendays when she failed to Impress and she was intrigued by the very different lifestyle. She wasn't as disappointed by what she deemed her failure as she expected to be, mainly because she'd come to the conclusion that Impression was highly unlikely and she probably wasn't an ideal candidate anyway. Her time at Telgar stretched to months, and then a turn, and then a second turn. It wasn't that she was so unbelievably happy that she couldn't bear to go home, but she knew that she hadn't much of a future in High Telgar, but she might have one at the Weyr, if she could just manage to make herself useful.
In spite of her best efforts, Impression did not occur for her, and by the time she reached her twentieth turn Jasrai had begun to despair. It wasn't just that she hadn't Impressed, but she had also made no real friends while at Telgar, or even form a deep, lasting relationship with a single person, and that sort of unelected isolation is difficult for human beings to endure. She had made up her mind to stand at one more hatching, Shaith's last clutch, even though there was obviously no gold egg. The censorious attitude toward females riding chromatics didn't effect her much because she didn't expect to Impress.
And then she did.

Roseth Name: Roseth Color: green Rank: wingrider in T'pan's wing
Character Track: "Extraordinary" from Pippin
Personality: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet?
Um, excuse you. Clearly you do not know who Roseth is, because no one smells better than her. No one is smarter than her, faster than her, or in any way better than her. The only time she'll yield is to Nellath, and even then, it's more out of respect than truly acknowledging she's not better than her clutchmate at something. (Which she is, just so you know.) People have accused Roseth of compensating for some deep rooted insecurities, but that couldn't be further from the truth in her mind. The reality is that is very true. Being looked down upon makes her blood boil! In her defense, Roseth is stronger, faster and smarter than most other greens. Her social skills, well, that's where she needs some serious work.
Her desire to win is a steadfast first place of "Most Ridiculous Award". You really can't win them all. Unless, of course, you're Roseth. If she can't be the best of the best, she'll be the best at being the worst. It doesn't make much sense to a lot of people, but the logic translates perfectly to her, thank you very much. Maybe you're just too stupid to get it. At the end of the day, she can always, always say she did something better than the norm. (Even if that something is failing.)
She considers golds to be pests, but would rather just listen to them and get it over with then go gripe about it to Nellath and Kannaroth later. Roseth's biggest problem is not gossip, it's ignoring problems. If something bad happens, she'll ignore it until she forgets or it goes away. It hasn't failed her so far, so why fix what isn't broken? Other than the two greens, she only holds her rider in high esteem. Perhaps too high. Why can't they act like they ride a gold or bronze? If they weren't better than their riders, she wouldn't have picked them. Duh.
She is, after all, Roseth the Great.
Why Jasrai? In Jasrai, Roseth saw first and foremost an audience. Someone with Jasrai's skill at observation would make a perfect witness to Roseth's wonderfulness. They also share an assumption of their own intelligence, and although Jasrai lacks confidence in herself in other areas, Roseth is marvelous enough to compensate for any failings her bond may imagine in herself. As far as Roseth is concerned, Jasrai's unconventional skill set is a bonus. No other dragon can claim such a talented bondmate! And the fact that Jasrai is willing to take risks means that there are more opportunities for Roseth to show off with hers. There's a good possibility that the pair could become the Pernese equivalent of trick riders, were it not for the restrictions Telgar has for its women. Jasrai also gives Roseth a sympathetic ear to grumble in when others fail to properly appreciate her, since Jasrai knows how it feels to be overlooked by people who're incapable of recognizing her true value.
Clutchmates Green Nellath, Impressed to Alirien (A'li). Green Kannorath, Impressed to Yisenkar (Y'kar).

Impression Four eggs was so few, and they were so small! Jasrai thought cynically to herself that she had chosen an unfortunate clutch to make her bargain with herself over. The odds of her Impressing anything in a clutch of four was very slim indeed. Nevertheless, she stood on the hot sands, ignoring the glares of male candidates who clearly felt that she didn't belong on the sands at a hatching that didn't include a queen egg. She couldn't explain to them that this would be her last hatching, and then she would go home and they wouldn't have to worry about her Impressing their dragons. She wasn't going to argue with them. She was allowed to be here, and she was going to stand.
To avoid causing a commotion, however, Jasrai stood near the back of the candidates ringing the four eggs. It seemed to her that they probably shouldn't be standing so close to them. If she was a newly-hatched dragonet, she wouldn't like to be surrounded by so many people, staring at her so intently. She wasn't a dragonet, of course, so the thought might be totally ridiculous, but it hardly mattered as an egg burst spectacularly and a green dragonet shook herself off. Her eyes were ruby red and her expression ferocious. At the same time another egg cracked. It's occupant - another green - lurched free of the egg and moved toward the boys ringing the eggs like a drunken bumblebee.
The pale green dragonet that had hatched first hissed at her sibling and began to walk purposefully through the ranks of candidates, fanning her stubby wings to encourage them to clear a path and snapping at the fingers of anyone who tried to touch her. One boy quite deliberately planted himself in her path, as though he planned to force an Impression and Jasrai bit back a cry of warning. She watched as the green bowled him over and snarled in his face while he was down. After that the pale green's speed increased as she examined the candidates and clearly found them all lacking. Meanwhile a third egg hatched and the second dragonet's motions became frenzied.
Jasrai's instinct for self-preservation had decided to take a holiday it seemed, as she moved to intercept the course of the frenzied green dragonet, who was causing the candidates to spread out to avoid being plowed into. Her attention was wholly on the distressed green and didn't notice when the first dragonet came barreling into her with an outraged squeak.
What are you doing, Jasrai? Look at me! I am your Roseth and you are my Jasrai and she can't have you, an alto voice in Jasrai's head said.
Before Jasrai could recover from her shock of having a baby green dragon crouched over her chest Roseth spread her wings and hissed ferociously at her distraught clutchmate, warning her away with every tool at her disposal. Jasrai heard Roseth's dialogue: This human is mine! I will bite you hard if you try to take her. She doesn't want you anyway.
"Roseth, I am thrilled that you chose me, but I can't breathe with you sitting on my chest like that," Jasrai said breathlessly.
It took the young green another few moments to decide that no one else was going to make an attempt to steal her bondmate before she removed herself and agreed to be led over to feed. When asked if she was interested in seeing her clutchmates hatch, she was dismissive: I have already claimed the best human. What care I for lesser creatures?

Firelizards Name: Flynxerrat Nickname(s): Flynx Looks to: Jasrai Personality: Fiercely protective of Jasrai, Flynx can be extremely aggressive toward people he views as potential threats, which includes anyone who looks like they're monopolizing Jasrai's time or attention. Even Roseth. In defense of his Jasrai, he is fearless. The rest of the time he is eager to please and impress his human, which makes him more obedient than one would expect from a firelizard of his temperament. He does this solely out of love for Jasrai. Everyone else is a potential threat and thus viewed with suspicion. He is very much a one-person firelizard, and will only permit himself to be fed from Jasrai's hands and only obey commands that she speaks. History: Flynx's egg was given to Jasrai by her grandfather when he learned of her Impression. The egg came as a belated gift because he decided to go through official channels to acquire it at first, though in the end he fell back on his less-than-savory contacts to expedite the process when months passed without producing the egg he wanted. The resulting egg was delivered to Jasrai about four months after she Impressed Roseth, and hatched two sevendays later. Jasrai was delighted with Flynx and he soon became an omnipresent bronze ornament glittering on her shoulder. Roseth tolerates him because she approves of his pride in their human. Recently he flew Y'kar's gold Treasure and they had nine eggs. Training: No/Stop/Don't, Come, Stay, Behave/Be Good, Find, Bring Parents: unknown Offspring: (with Treasure) gold Chantey, bronze ???, brown Andre, blue Sirsi, blue Trinket, blue Flurry, green Patience, green Shashee, green ???; (with Shimmer) bronze Lord, brown Moraket, blue Reflection, blue Glince, green Shine, green Numbweed
Name: Satish Nickname(s): Sati Looks to: Jasrai Personality: Sati is as protective of Jasrai, but she always defers to the older bronze, allowing him the position of preference on their human's shoulder while she flies about. She is a vain little creature who is constantly getting into things and requiring extrication. For this she is always being scolded by Roseth, who views the little green as a cute nuisance on whom she secretly dotes. Although her first love is Jasrai and her second Flynx, others may win her favor through profuse adulation. She isn't averse to meeting new people, after all, she's just averse to people thinking they're friends before she's reached that conclusion. History: Sati was another gift from Jasrai's family. Several sevendays after Flynx hatched, Jasrai's parents sent her another firelizard egg that they had gotten through the usual, legal channels. At first Jasrai thought she might give the extra egg to one of the others who had Impressed with her, but she ended up not doing so. When Sati hatched, Jasrai couldn't resist the pretty little green's charm and was glad she'd decided to keep her. Besides, Roseth wanted another firelizard and Flynx seemed to like her. Training: No/Stop/Don't, Come, Stay, Behave/Be Good, Find Parents: unknown Offspring: none
Name: Kitterin Nickname(s): Kit Looks to: Jasrai Personality: Kit does not like anyone except Jasrai. She doesn't like Flynx, she doesn't like Sati, she doesn't like Roseth. She likes Rem, but only because he's fun to terrorize. Everyone is a potential enemy, and even Jasrai can expect to receive her share of nips, particularly if she tries to solicit affection. Kit is only affectionate when she chooses to be, and only for as long as she chooses to be. She can go from zero to total b***h in less time than it takes to blink, and by the time she's at b***h, she's biting. It's conceivable that she is only pleasant and agreeable because she actually enjoys the disbelief on the faces of her victims. She is virtually fearless and will not be bossed around by anyone, though Jasrai can usually persuade her to behave. History: Kit was one of seven offspring produced by Y'kar's Treasure and a bronze named Melpo. Jasrai received her egg as a gift from Y'kar. Upon hatching, Kit promptly bit Jasrai and hissed threateningly at everyone else, but after enough food was offered she calmed down and fell asleep. She has not shown herself to be intimidated by any of Jasrai's other companions, and is actually usually the one doing the intimidating, particularly if someone is foolish enough to wake her from her repose. Kitterin spends a lot of time sleeping, which is probably for the best. Training: No, Come, Stay Parents: gold Treasure and bronze Melpo Offspring: none
Name: Hourem Nickname(s): Rem Looks to: Jasrai Personality: Rem would love to be a retiring homebody. He is happiest nestled somewhere warm and safe on Jasrai, but by virtue of being unassertive and easily cowed there are relatively few places left to him unless Jasrai makes a special effort. He likes to be carried, but when Flynx tells him off or Kit harries him he's quick to take flight, though he's not very fast. He loves Jasrai unconditionally, and not just because she frequently intercedes on his behalf. In spite of the abuses he endures from Kit and Flynx, Rem is a very patient and forgiving flit. Rem also has a habit of flying back to his mother when things get too bad at home and hiding out for a while. History: Hourem was one of nine eggs laid in a flight between Y'ul's gold Song and a bronze belonging to a visitor from High Reaches, and Jasrai was more than a little surprised to be the recipient of his egg. In the end she chalked it up to being in the right place at the right time and was even more deeply indebted to Y'ul. Because he was convenient enough to hatch when they weren't otherwise occupied, all of Jasrai's assorted companions were present when he hatched and he was greeted by general indifference from all but Jasrai and Kit. Kit hated him and Jasrai loved him. It was an easy choice. Training: No, Come, Stay Parents: gold Song and bronze Adorn Offspring: none
Name: Sirsi Nickname(s): Sir Looks to: Jasrai Personality: If any of Jasrai's firelizards is a player, it's Sirsi. He has a deep and abiding love for anyone who's female, regardless of species, and likes to bring his flavor of the week paper presents. He is very fond of physical contact, and likes to sleep curled up with as many other bodies as possible. As he grows older and his "love all" attitude changes meaning slightly, he'll often be seen chasing any female that rises, regardless of his likelihood of success. If there is no female in heat, or no female relief to be found after an unsuccessful flight, he will actually sate himself with other blues or even small browns - if he can catch them. For this reason, he also seems to spend a lot of time getting into fights. History: The product of a flight between Flynx and Treasure, Sirsi's egg was chosen because it seemed very unlikely he would be any larger than a brown, and so would pose no threat to Flynx's authority. When he hatched, he more or less swooned into Jasrai's hands while radiating universal love. Even Kit was impressed by his unconditional affection. Training: No, Come, Stay Parents: gold Treasure and bronze Flynxerrat Offspring: none
Name: Moraket Nickname(s): Mora Looks to: Jasrai Personality: Perhaps the most even-tempered of Jasrai's fair, Mora generally tries to avoid getting into tiffs whenever possible, but he isn't a coward. He simply prefers to choose his battles. He is one of those flits who likes to know what's going on at all times, and while his intelligence makes him easy to train, his inquisitive nature makes it difficult for him to adhere to commands like No and Stay. His inquisitive nature definitely extends to foodstuffs, and he will put just about anything in his mouth and try to eat it. Fortunately his stomach and digestive system seem virtually indestructible. One would think he'd be frequently in trouble, but he has a gift for opening his eyes very wide and looking extremely innocent indeed, which has no doubt saved him many scoldings. History: The product of a flight between Flynx and a gold named Shimmer, Mora was something of a surprise, but it was readily apparent that he would not be a problem when it came to the social hierarchy of Jasrai's firelizards, which was a relief. Training: No, Come, Stay Parents: gold Shimmer and bronze Flynxerrat Offspring:
Name: Elanais Nickname(s): El Looks to: Jasrai Personality: History: Training: No, Come, Stay Parents: Offspring:

Firelizard Relationships + means positive relation o means neutral relation - means negative relation
Flynxerrat o Hourem - Flynx actually doesn't care one way or the other about Rem, but he does sometimes enjoy tormenting him and won't hesitate to scold him or snap at him if he feels the brown's overstepping his bounds or impinging on Flynx's territory. - Kitterin - Flynx cordially dislikes Kitterin for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that she bit Jasrai and continues to do so on occasion. The fact that she has no respect for his authority doesn't put her in particularly good standing with him either. + Moraket - Flynx has no problems with Mora, provided the brown doesn't do anything that will get Jasrai in trouble. He can appreciate that besides himself, Mora is probably the most intelligent of Jasrai's 'lizards, and he appreciates him for that and will come to consider him a comrade and ally. + Satish - Flynx views Sati more like a younger sister than anything else. He cares very much for and about her and will defend her almost as vigorously as he does Jasrai, but he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. In spite of that, it's unlikely he would be pleased if anyone else flew her. o Sirsi - Flynx doesn't mind Sir as long as the blue doesn't try to cozy up to him. He's also not well pleased when Sir makes eyes at Sati. However, he approves generally of the blue's peacemaking tendencies, particularly when they keep Kit out of his hair, so to speak.
Hourem + Flynxerrat - Rem is terrified of Flynx, but despite that he doesn't dislike him. He sort of views Flynx as a father figure, and very much wants the bronze to like him and protect him like he does Sati, actually. He is convinced that it's his fault Flynx is indifferent to him. - Kitterin - Rem is more afraid of Kit than he is of Flynx, and for good reason, considering how cruel she is to him. He alternates between fleeing from her and trying to appease her. The former tactic is generally more effective than the latter, but not by much. + Moraket - Rem appreciates that Mora is willing to stand up to Kit in his defense, particularly since none of the other 'lizards will, really. He thinks Mora is almost as amazing as Flynx with regards to his intelligence and courage, but more personable. He wishes that he was more like Mora. + Satish - Rem likes Sati because she is very rarely unkind to him. Admittedly, she very rarely thinks about him at all, but at least she isn't unkind. He's probably a little bit in love with her just for that, but too much in awe of Flynx to even think of flying her. + Sirsi - Rem adores young Sir. The affectionate blue is second only to Jasrai as far as he's concerned. However, he is uncomfortable with Sir's lustful ways and will probably be one of the blue's go-to cuddle buddies when he needs relief, though it's unlikely Rem will notice the sexual aspect.
Kitterin - Flynxerrat - Kit resents Flynx for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that he is a bronze and able to order her about. She resists him and opposes him in whatever way she can. Many of her actions are actually calculated to annoy the bronze. - Hourem - Kit's attitude toward Rem is truly unfair. She would dislike him whether or not he'd stand up for himself, but the fact that he won't makes her like him even less. She thinks he is weak and pathetic, and just dying to be abused. She's only too happy to help. - Moraket - Kit dislikes Mora mostly because she dislikes everyone. She has no particular cause to dislike him, except when he comes to Rem's defense, but she still dislikes him on principle. It does bother her a little that no matter how unpleasant she is to him, he won't be terrorized. - Satish - Kit despises Sati because she feels that Sati is the favorite green. She hates Sati because Flynx protects her. She hates Sati because she is Sati. She doesn't need a reason. It isn't even that she views Sati as a rival, really. She simply hates her. o Sirsi - Kit appreciates Sir's appreciation for her and secretly enjoys it, though she often rebuffs his friendly overtures. However, his constant need to touch her drives her absolute nuts and will often as not result in her chasing him off with claws and teeth.
Moraket + Flynxerrat - Mora thinks Flynx is great, and would be very proud to say that they're related if flits had any concept of such things. He enjoys spending time with the bronze and even competing with him, though he rarely wins. + Hourem - Mora treats Rem like a project. He tries to convince the brown to experiment and try new things and to join him in his adventures, but he sometimes becomes frustrated with him and gives up for a time. Nevertheless, he protects Rem from Kit's torments when he can. o Kitterin - Mora thinks Kit has issues and prefers to stay away from her as much as possible. The only reason he interferes with her games is that he hates to see Rem made miserable. Still, he doesn't openly oppose her so much as distract her in a non-confrontational way. + Satish - Mora genuinely likes Sati. He likes her very, very much. Aside from Flynx, Sati is his favorite 'lizard. He thinks that she's beautiful and very clever for a green, and deserves the position of honor Jasrai affords her. He will make a complete fool of himself for her, always. + Sirsi - Mora approves of Sir's attitude toward the world, but like Flynx he would prefer that Sir be affectionate from a distance. He really doesn't want to cuddle with the blue for extended periods of time. He does like Sir, however, and thinks that he's fun otherwise.
Satish + Flynxerrat - Sati adores Flynxerrat. He is her favorite 'lizard, and she would spend every moment with him if she could, waking or sleeping. In fact, she usually manages to arrange it so that they are sleeping curled together on Jasrai or her pillow. She is jealous of attention he pays other female 'lizards. o Hourem - Sati mostly ignores Rem. She doesn't dislike him, but she's not impressed with him. They actually agree that he should be more like Flynx. She will, however, defend him from Kit, but only because she dislikes Kit, and not for his own sake, really. - Kitterin - Sati hates Kit. She thinks that she's a lazy, mean-spirited bully. It is one of her greatest fears that Flynx will fly Kit, which would undoubtedly break her heart. Kit also brings out Sati's violent side, and if the younger green tries to start something, Sati's up for it. + Moraket - Sati likes Mora's adulation. She can't help it, particularly in those instances when Flynx comes back from flying another female, Mora is a good comfort to her. She considers him a very good friend and is more or less oblivious to his feelings for her. + Sirsi - Sati likes Sirsi. He's not Flynx, but it's hard to dislike someone whose attitude toward the world is unconditional love. She'll cuddle with him willingly enough because it makes Kit angry and she hopes it makes Flynx jealous, but she also simply enjoys cuddling with him.
Sirsi + Flynxerrat - Sir admires Flynx, but he thinks the bronze is entirely too serious. He also thinks Flynx gets too much of the others' attention and adoration, and has a tendency to show off in his presence in an attempt to attract attention and maybe get Flynx to show some kind of approval for him. + Hourem - Sir sees in Rem a ready-made audience and someone who will always need him. In all ways, the perfect companion. He knows that whatever affection he bestows upon the blue will be much-appreciated and that he can more or less have his way with him, which tickles him. + Kitterin - Sir views Kit as a special challenge and has made it his goal in life to convince her to cuddle with him. Ideally, he'd like her to initiate contact, but he'd be fine if she just tolerated it when he initiated it. In the mean time, he makes many gifts of stolen paper to her. + Moraket - Sir doesn't think much about Mora except as another friend and person to cuddle with. As far as he's concerned, the brown is too self-assured to need him like Rem does, but tolerant of his affections, and that's really all he cares about. + Satish - Sir likes the challenge Sati presents, though he doesn't always understand why she seems to run hot and cold toward him. He loves her like he loves everyone, but when she sometimes lets him cuddle with her he thinks maybe she likes him more than she does.

Letter Home /////Mum and Da, /////It looks like I won't be coming home after all. I know I said I'd stay for just one more hatching, and if I didn't Impress, I'd come home. But circumstances have changed somewhat and I really think that I need to be here. In fact, I'm not certain they'd let me leave even if I tried. (Have you guessed what I'm talking about yet?) Remember the last time I wrote you I told you about Shaith's flight? It's turned out to be her last flight. The others have forced her to relinquish her title as Weyrwoman. They say that if all her dragon can produce are four small eggs, she's no longer fit to lead the Weyr. But I'm getting off the point and you've already heard about the clutch with four small eggs and all that, so let me tell you about the hatching.
/////There were only four eggs, and as it turns out they all produced greens. The first to hatch was a pale green with wing membranes that alternated between darker and lighter shades of green. Her front toes do the same thing. The second to hatch had something wrong with her, we think, because she just stumbled around the sands knocking into people and becoming more and more frenzied until she finally disappeared between. I didn't see her go between, thank goodness. I don't think I could have borne that. The next two dragons were darker. The darkest hatched third. She had some even darker markings. The last to hatch was a solid green.
/////And really that's about all I can tell you about the hatching's events, because I really stopped noticing what was going on with the people and dragons on the sands after the first dragon to hatch, the pale one, knocked me over and claimed me. Actually, she demanded that I look at her. She's like that, Roseth. She has to be the center of attention at all times and she has to be the best. Well. She's already certain that she's the best, but she likes other to acknowledge it. So...that's the big news. I Impressed!
/////My dragon's name is Roseth. Her sisters' names are Nellath and Kannaroth. Nellath is the darkest and the largest. She Impressed to a younger man named Alirien who's taken the honorific A'li. Kannaroth Impressed to a smallish young man named Yisenkar who's taken the honorific Y'kar. I won't be shortening my name. It seems unnecessary. Besides, J'rai just sounds silly.
/////I hope you'll share this letter with Grandda. I know he'll want to know. I love you all lots, and I'll try to keep you up to date with Roseth.
/////Yours, /////Jasrai

Letter Home /////Grandda, /////I know I should have written you as soon as I received the egg, but considering how long post takes, even between the Weyr and High Telgar, I thought it would be all right if I waited to write you until after the egg hatched. It hatched last night, by the way (which won't mean much to you except that I have a very young firelizard sleeping on my left arm right now). But everything went smoothly, and the firelizard you sent is a perfect little bronze. Yes, I know you said in your letter that you wanted to give me a gold, but I actually think it's better that the firelizard ended up being a bronze. I don't think Roseth would have liked it too much if I Impressed a gold anything. She's developed a little thing about golds lately.
/////But I can write more about Roseth later. I'm sure you're anxious (or at least more interested in) about the bronze. I'd been keeping his jar beside the hearth in the weyrling barracks, since it's always stoked and warm, even though we who use it are the lowest of the low. I'd been checking on it twice daily for the past sevenday and when I came back from lessons I noticed that the jar was doing a bit of shaking. I probably looked like a fool running to the kitchens to beg some meat to feed the hatchling, but they didn't say anything. They probably thought Roseth was hungry.
/////When I got back I took the egg out just as a little head broke through the shell and was followed by two foreclaws. The bronze pushed his way out of the hole, widening it as he went, and fell into my lap. I held him and fed him and talked to him while thinking warm, loving thoughts, which is actually much more difficult than you would think. Particularly with a young dragon in your head demanding to know what's going on. It was probably a good thing that it took so long for the egg to reach me, or I mightn't have had the training to keep Roseth from distracting me completely.
/////Eventually the little thing was sated and fell asleep. I didn't want to leave him, but I had chores to go to since all this took place during lunch and I couldn't take him with me. It turned out all right, though, because Roseth had to stay behind, too, and she said he didn't wake once while I was doing my chores. When I went to sleep he curled up next to me on my pillow. He's been more or less attached to me ever since. Whenever I'm at liberty, he's on me, either balancing on my shoulder or sleeping in my lap or (as now) draped over one hand so that the other can pet him.
/////Convincing him to stay in the barracks during lessons was an interesting challenge. Firelizards don't think in words like dragons. They think in ideas and emotions mostly, which makes it very difficult to convey something like Stay Here. I'll get better at it. I learned to speak to Roseth mind-to-mind, and I'll learn to communicate with Flynxerrat, too. That's what I've decided to call him. Flynxxerat. Flynx for short.
/////Anyway, I love him. Thank you so very, very much. He's probably the best gift I've ever gotten. Please tell Mum and Da about him, so that I can mention him in my letters. I really don't like hiding things from them.
/////Lots of love, /////Jasrai

Letter Home /////Mum and Da, /////I just got the egg you sent me. I'm told it could either be a blue or a green inside, and honestly I'd be thrilled with either. I think Flynxerrat, the bronze Grandda gave me, would prefer a green, but he doesn't get a say in this. I hope you don't get the impression that I'll like this little one any less because it's not a metallic dragon. After all, I've Impressed a dragon whose hide is green, and I think she might take large bites out of me if I professed any preference for any other color.
/////But even without the threat of draconic violence, I really am overjoyed to receive this egg. Please, please don't worry that Grandda's egg reached me first or contained a metallic firelizard. We all know how he got ahold of it, and although it doesn't make me love Flynx any less, I do know that different methods produce different results. I can't wait until this firelizard hatches, no matter what color it is. Roseth says she wants it to be a blue, as I only need one green in my life. Guess who she means? Obviously, we can't decide what we want more. Roseth does promise, however, that she'll be nice to it no matter what color it is.
/////In other news, I'm doing well. Roseth continues to grow like a weed, and she has the most forceful personality I've encountered in any dragon to date. In my vast experience. Actually, I am having experiences, but I still wouldn't consider myself any great expert on dragon personalities. Just Roseth and her sisters, and mostly only Roseth. Well and good, as far as I'm concerned, and as Roseth points out, I don't need to be well-acquainted with more than one dragon.
/////I know you think she sounds like a tyrant, but she really isn't, you know. She's just possessive. That said, I'm not sure how she'd feel about meeting you. I do plan to make that introduction as soon as she's allowed to fly with a rider - I don't have to go between to get home, after all - but I can't guarantee she'll be anything more than polite. I'm afraid she views the two of you and Grandda as rivals for my affection, the silly.
/////I love you both very, very much, /////Jasrai
