Another day, another new batch of stares and mutters following the pair as they pass by. Nellath was as close to sulking as the broody green could get, with A'li at her side showing much the same expression on his face. Would they ever just keep their sharding opinions to themselves? Hm. Probably not, but at least where they were headed it was much less crowded, and quieter. Nellath did so enjoy the hot springs for those facts, then the fact that the warm water felt good to her hide was just a bonus.

They are making me angrier, A'limine. They talk as if we can't hear it! A hand makes its way over to scratch his companion's eye ridges. "I know Nellath, try to ignore it though. We're almost to our spot."

For Jasrai Impression had been everything she expected and more. She had known when she stood that none of the eggs contained gold dragons, and that would mean she Impressed a fighting dragon if she Impressed at all. A turn spent in Telgar had told her exactly how well that would go over with the weyrfolk, but she had decided to defy their conventions and stand anyway. She'd promised herself one last chance.

And you got me. Aren't you lucky? Roseth interjected, twitching her tail so that water would splash Jasrai. The pair were at the edge of one of the hot springs, Jasrai sitting on the ledge that had been carved by someone industrious some time ago and leaning her head against Roseth's side while Roseth lay on the edge of the pool, trailing her tail and one foreclaw in the heated water.

"I think I am," Jasrai said, reaching up to grasp her dragon's tail before more splashing could happen. Roseth moved much too quickly for her attempts to succeed, and knowing that pleased the light green dragonet, who liked to be superlative.

I think one of my clutchmates is coming, Roseth announced. Nellath.

"Thanks." The hot springs were fairly empty at this time of day, when everyone else went to meals, and so Jasrai had felt safe soaking in the altogether, but if there were going to be people she'd rather be clothed. No one should have to look at her pale, puffy body. Which is why she brought some clothes she could change into quickly at need.

I wish you wouldn't think things like that, Roseth remarked as she nudged a long tunic toward Jasrai's questing hand. I am a superior dragon, and I chose a superior bondmate. When you criticize yourself you criticize my choice. I didn't make a mistake.

"Of course," Jasrai agreed absently. "Where are my shorts?"

I may be sitting on them. Do I have to move? I'm very comfortable.

"Yes you have to move!"

Grumbling, Roseth stood up and revealed the shorts her bondmate sought with a disdainful chuff. She did, however, keep watch as Jasrai pulled them on. Considering how her human felt about people seeing her body - not that she was embarrassed to be exposed as much as she didn't think her body was something people would want to see - Roseth decided it would be best not to tell Jasrai that Nellath and her human had arrived several seconds ago.

Nellath, Roseth said, ask your human to pretend to just be arriving now.

The sight in the distance of her sister had Nellath's mood suddenly lifted. Her attention turned to A'li when they were mere feet away, broadcasting this change immediately. I want to go to Roseth, mine. Of course she doesn't give much room for agreement, or argument as she heads straight for the other green and rider pair.

A'li grins to himself and trails behind her a bit. Well, this was nice. Just recently they'd had a meeting with the other pair in their small group, now a chance to speak with Roseth's rider away from all those stares as well. The day was certainly looking up indeed. He slows his pace when Nellath pauses though, and before asking she sends on Roseth's little message. Of course sister.

A light bugle is sent in greeting to the pair not two seconds after, and Nellath starts walking towards them again with A'li at her side. "Hello! Company we wouldn't mind having." Not at all.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:54 pm

Jasrai turned quickly, her brown eyes wide as she was caught by surprise. Yes, Roseth had mentioned her that A'li and Nellath were approaching, but she hadn't implied that they would arrive so soon. Her cheeks were flushed at the thought that A'li might have seen her nude, though she supposed she could dismiss that condition as a result of the heated spring she occupied. Awkwardly she raised one hand in salutation.

"Hello, A'li," she greeted the younger weyrling. She wasn't quite lying when she continued, "I wouldn't mind your company either."

In reality, she was not entirely comfortable being the only girl to Impress at the last hatching, and being the oldest of the group by several turns made things more awkward for her. Also, she just wasn't comfortable around strangers, and before they Impressed Jasrai had never had much cause to associate with either of the young men who Impressed with her. It wasn't as though male and female candidates were encouraged to interact, and even if they had been, Jasrai was extremely bad at making new friends. She often worried that she had made all her friends in her youth and had since lost the ability, thus being removed from her youthful setting she would never make any friends again. At least she had Roseth.

Roseth trotted over to her clutchmate, her eyes a deep cobalt blue. She was pleased to see Nellath. Unlike many of the dragons in the weyr, she was not derogatory when she observed the figure of her bulky sister. She knew her Jasrai tended to think of herself as unattractive, like many people thought of Nellath, and that made her more sympathetic to the darker green. Not to mention she liked that she was effortlessly more attractive and graceful than Nellath.

It's always a pleasure to see you, Nellath, Roseth said, stopping just short of her sister. You and your human will stay, won't you?

A'li bears a much more relaxed grin for Jasrai than he would for their fellow rider, stepping closer with his own wave. "Are you here enjoying the quiet away from all of those.. people in the Weyr?" His grin drops for a moment on the word people but it doesn't last long. No, no need to ruin the nice mood that was building up. "Have you been enjoying the water, your hair looks wet." There we go, no hints at all that they may have been sooner than anticipated.

Once close enough he lets Nellath walk on ahead of him while he searches for a good place to sit. Nope, not getting too close to the water where there was a small threat of falling in and drenching himself. Nice and warm or not.

Nellath gives another rumbled greeting for her sister and walks up to meet her with eyes swirling a very content dull blue shade. Always a pleasure to see you as well sister. You and Yours. She gives a slow nod, sitting right where she is for the moment. Yes we will stay. It is nice here, quiet, away from those who look down on us, and the warm water is soothing. Have you been enjoying it? Your hide looks well shined. Yes, always compliment her sister. Keep their moods both nice and friendly.

"You've got it in one," Jasrai answered with a not-nice twist of a smile. She knew A'li and Y'kar had it hard, that people made their lives difficult, but she guessed that would wear off eventually. At least they were male.

Yes. Our plight is worst, Roseth said feelingly and only for her human's ears. But I am worth some difficulty, am I not?

Jasrai answered her dragon with a feeling of love that left nothing in question. Roseth was more important to her than anything else in her life. Meanwhile she watched A'li try to find a place to sit. At least she didn't have to worry about him joining her, though she had absolutely no intention of getting out of the water. One thing she loved about the hot springs was that water concealed a multitude of physical flaws. It made a person practically weightless, it distorted their appearance so that it was difficult to tell how large or small they really were when they were beneath the surface, and best of all it was warm. Getting out would mean that her clothes would cling unflatteringly to her and she would be cold.

"Um. Yes, I've been enjoying the water. It's warm." Which was possibly the stupidest answer she could have given, but it was the truth. Jasrai was one of those people who always seemed to be cold, and she had a profound appreciation for the warmth of the hot springs. "You don't seem particularly interested in them at the moment, however, so what brings you this way?"

I have not been in today. Today I have been pretending to be a pillow, Roseth answered her sister. Being a pillow is fairly boring, since pillows aren't supposed to talk. I'm probably the worst pillow on Pern.

The last part of her statement didn't seem to bother her particularly. In fact, she said it with a certain relish. She didn't respond to her sister's mention of those who look down on them. It wasn't something she liked to think about, really, and when she did think about it, she always spun it so that she and her rider were notorious. It was far better to be notorious than an object of derision.

A'li gives a light nod to that, and once he finds a rock that looks comfortable enough, takes his seat as well. "Nice and quiet here. That water does look warm, but I'm not in any hurry to get wet and walk back to the Weyr dripping." He grins lightly at her before sending a small nod towards Nellath. "She wanted to come to the quiet. She won't admit it either but swimming looks interesting to try. Can Roseth swim yet?"

Nellath observes Jasrai for a lingering moment before her attention is fully on her sister again. Then will you join me in the warm water? Mine will stay on the rocks, but I would like to soak. And possibly try that swimming thing in the deeper water. She gives a thoughtful look to Roseth about being the worst pillow.. and makes a light, content sound. I am sure you would be, sister. Are you the best swimmer yet?
PostPosted: Tue Oct 27, 2009 7:58 am

Jasrai glanced over her shoulder at Roseth, who was behaving better with Nellath than she did with any other dragon, possibly even Kannorath. She wondered if it was because Nellath probably wouldn't have a problem sitting on Roseth if the slighter dragon was as difficult with her as she was with other dragons. Or maybe Roseth liked Nellath better. Jasrai wasn't going to ask. She figured Roseth deserved some level of privacy.

"There is that," Jasrai agreed. "But that's why I brought something to towel off with and a set of dry clothes. There's no way you'll catch me wandering through the Weyr in my bathing clothes. Not sober, anyway."

She grinned as she began to relax once more. A'li must not have seen her bathing in naught but her skin. Surely he would have said something, or Nellath would have mentioned it to Roseth. She turned around on the ledge and folded her arms on the edge of the spring, using her laced fingers as a chin rest so that she could actually look at A'li when he spoke.

"I'm not sure," Jasrai said, giving Roseth a speculative look. "I'm pretty good at it, but I'm fairly sure the skill doesn't transfer."

I could swim, Roseth announced to the assemblage. Then, lest anyone think she was just talking, she settled the matter by adding, And I will.

With that declarative statement, she padded toward the spring. She gave just the barest hesitation before sliding into the water fairly gracefully, creating relatively few ripples. At least until she began to flail about in an effort to stay afloat. She had never actually gone in the water before.

Need help? Jasrai asked. She was watching carefully, and ready to intercede whether or not her dragon wanted the assistance if she thought there was a chance of Roseth drowning. She wasn't entirely sure the prideful green would think to call for help if she needed it.

No! I can do it. Sure enough, a few moments later she'd coordinated her limbs and was doing something like a dog paddle. It wasn't the swanlike float the older dragons used at the lake, but it was serviceable. See?

A'li divides his attention between the two greens, and Jasrai. The content feeling he was getting from Nellath assured him enough that there was nothing at all to worry about with her sister. He grins at Jasrai and nods.

"Yeah, well I didn't think ahead enough for that I guess. Something my older sisters would probably try to tease me about before pushing me in the water to get wet anyway." The tiniest pang of homesickness springs up, but is very promptly chased away by Nellath sending him nothing but confidence and that he didn't need them anymore, not with her and her sisters. "Aa, I'll take your word though. I've not seen anyone not sober yet, but Nellath does think it would be amusing to watch and have a laugh at if they do anything foolish." More so if it was any of those stuck-up metallics' riders.

He gives another nod and glances over to the dragons as well. "I wouldn't say I'm a great swimmer myself, but I can keep my head up and I guess that's all that matters."

Nellath's eyes take on a combination of blue and green, swirling quickly as she watches her sister test out swimming. She doesn't take a single step forward when it seems Roseth may be having trouble, and merely glances from her sister to her rider, assessing the moment before relaxing again. No, Hers would look much more worried if Roseth couldn't do it, and her sister was as prideful as any Bronze. Probably more so, and that gets a draconic grin. She gives a rumble as Roseth seems to master the skill, and stretches a wing. My sister is a good swimmer.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:38 pm

Jasrai shrugged. "I don't really drink. And you know as well as I that weyrlings are forbidden. I'm willing to bend some rules and stretch others, but I think I'll leave that one alone. It seems to be more for the dragons' sake than ours, and I don't want to do anything that might endanger Roseth."

Roseth, hearing her name, chanced a look over her shoulder at her bondmate as she paddled through the water. Nothing interesting there, she decided, and returned her attention to the act of swimming. Her version bore little resemblance to what Jasrai called swimming, but Jasrai had two fewer limbs to manage. It put her at a distinct advantage, Roseth felt, and she allowed that to be her excuse.

It's not as if dragons are meant to be water animals. We fly through the air, the dragonet remarked to no one in particular.

That's true, Jasrai agreed. And it's very clever of you to master three forms of movement.

I can't fly yet. It's only two, Roseth corrected. But soon it will be three. I plan to be the first from my clutch to fly. She said the last confidentially, so that only Jasrai could hear it.

"My parents were both good swimmers and felt it was an important skill for me to have, even though High Telgar is mostly landlocked. I have no idea where they learned, but I'm glad of it." She shrugged again. "No knowledge is wasted and all that."

Roseth risked dividing her attention again to address her sister, Won't you come in? My Jasrai is talking to your A'li, but it's not very interesting, I think. We could talk about more interesting things.

"Forbidden yeah, but as much as the Weyrleader drinks I wonder if they'd even notice if one or two drinks were had by a weyrling. But they probably wait for us to do something wrong for more to talk about.." Not that he would though, just mentioning it was for their dragons' sakes sealed that deal.

"Well, that helps it then. Neither of my parents, that I know of could swim. My older sisters bragged that they could, but we never had any water around to prove it. I think they were just lying though, they were only ever home practicing our mother's craft and baking breads and sweet cakes." A'li grins a little bit at the little memory. "I never wanted to get into that craft. What about you? Did you practice any craft before coming here?"

Nellath contents herself with watching Roseth and her 'swimming', not sparing a glance at their riders. The invitation is all she needs to join her sister, and she walks down to step into the water, as deep as she can stand in it without having to attempt at swimming. She wasn't as slight as Roseth after all, it would be more tricky to manage. And what would you talk about sister? Mine and I recently spoke with Kannaroth and hers, of plans and ideas.

"If you had to deal with those two goldriders, wouldn't you take to drinking, too?" Jasrai pointed out. As a female candidate, she'd been subjected to her share of lectures regarding the privilege afforded her, to be allowed to try to Impress a gold, and the responsibilities that went with that privilege. Everyone had been, though, so it wasn't as though she'd been singled out.

"But you're right. It would be just one more thing if we broke the rule." Even so, there were days when Jasrai would have liked nothing better than to down a glass of wine to make sleep come more easily. When her muscles were too sore to sleep, or when she couldn't make herself stop wondering and worrying about the future. "I don't see why everyone is so keen on catching us in error. We're the ones the dragons chose, and there's nothing they can do about it."

She rolled her shoulders surreptitiously as she listened to A'li talk about baking. She wasn't bad at baking, actually. It was just that she tended to lose interest in the process after the dough or batter went into the oven, and then it burned. That was her problem with meal preparation, in general. When it no longer required her active participation, it no longer held Jasrai's interest and she tended to forget that there was still one more step in its preparation - taking it away from the heat at the appropriate time.

"I didn't. My grandparents on both sides were miners and my parents holders. I learned a few skills from my grandfather on my mother's side, but he was always adamant that I not follow in his footsteps." Of course, the skills she learned had been ones that pertained to thievery, but it wasn't exactly something she crowed about.

"Would you have stayed on at the Weyr if you didn't Impress Nellath?" she asked, changing the topic before he could ask more about what skills, exactly, she'd learned from her grandfather.

I don't know, Roseth admitted. You could tell me about your day. Or about the plans and ideas you spoke of with Kannaroth. She always has lots of those, doesn't she?

"I probably would, to be honest. I can't help but be a bit worried when I think about which one of them could rise first. Hard to see which is a lesser evil.' He shrugs a bit, brushing that thought away for another time. Easier to not have to stress over could bes anyway.

"They want to find us doing something wrong so they have somebody else to be mad at with a reason. Right now they can only be mad at us because we have our greens. But our greens are better than any of theirs, they survived." And they would be making quite a name for themselves despite all of the ill will set against them too.

He gives an absent nod to the talk of her parents and their crafts. "Well at least he taught you some things? It's better than not being taught anything, at least I think it is." Huh, was it? He'd be no worse off if he never learned anything at all about baking.

"If I didn't Impress Nellath? I would have gone back home to make sure my sisters are kept out of trouble. I'm their only brother, and I wasn't really thrilled to be dragged away from keeping an eye on them to be here. But now, I could never leave. Nellath and her sisters are my sisters now." He gives a firm nod to that, already set in that path even though they really don't know each other as riders, or dragons yet aside from their own.

Nellath gives a low, contented hum. Kannoroth and hers have many plans. We will make a name for ourselves. Practice and create new flight patterns to prove ourselves better than any others in any wing they will put us in. They won't be able to point out anything bad about us when we do it.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 30, 2009 11:06 am

Jasrai nodded and rolled her eyes very slightly. It wasn't the most mature of gestures, but Jasrai was already an unsatisfactory rider in the general opinion of the Weyr, and she wasn't about to change her habits for their approval. They could change theirs first. As she thought this, Jasrai could sense Roseth's approval for her thought process. The light green dragonet would like that line of thinking. It was the sort of attitude Roseth herself seemed to demonstrate most of the time.

"Honestly, I'm fairly certain neither of them likes me, though they mostly tend to dismiss me as a greenrider. If I could manage to escape their notice completely, I would care who it was. They're almost as bad as the skulking Weyrwoman whose gold conceived our greens. She's scary. Despite the heat, Jasrai shivered. She'd occasionally encountered the woman, both before and after Impressing Roseth, and none of the encounters had gone well.

"Oh, it's useful enough to know, I suppose. In theory. I don't really have any reason to practice the stuff, though." She shrugged and dismissed it. It always gave her a secret thrill to talk around her grandfather's occupation without giving away what he really did. Even so, she was glad when he accepted the new topic.

"What's it like to have siblings?" she asked. She'd heard all sorts of things from different people when she asked that and come to the conclusion she was fortunate to be an only child. "You seem attached to yours."

Kannaroth always has plans, doesn't she? Does she know how to make flight patterns?

A'li spares a grin for that, nodding. "I doubt they much like any of the three of us. Fine by me really. I can't really hate a girl, but they're pushing my limits very close." Very close. Of course, Nellath would indeed love for him to hate them like she did. It was being worked on. Another nod at the thought of the former Weyrwoman. "I've been lucky to not come into her company, but I can agree. She's pretty frightening." And he really didn't like the thought that they might owe her, some small bit of gratitude for their dragons, in a way.

Another nod and A'li looks over at their dragons again. "Ah, but at least you have the talent there then. I guess I could have tried to learn my mother's craft, but it just didn't seem necessary. Who else would look after my sisters if I was busy learning to bake?" A crooked smile takes up its place as he thinks back. "Having siblings was nice. I doubt I'd care much for a brother, but I could make an exception in our case. It was always me and my sisters at home though. My elder sister wasn't very pleased that I was so protective, she liked the boys. My younger sisters enjoyed my company though. I kept them out of trouble and entertained, and safe. They liked to braid flowers in my hair sometimes, I guess that's why I haven't cropped it shorter yet while I'm here. It's a nice memory."

Watching the dragons seem to enjoy the water, A'li finds himself relaxing into the topic. "I was attached to them until they shipped me off here. That rider showing up at home really messed up all of my plans. But she at least didn't take my sisters away, so they're still home and safe. Now I have a new sister in Nellath, and her clutchmates. And by default you and Kannaroth's rider too I suppose. Even if Hers is a guy. Still getting used to that one."

Sparing a look over to their riders for a moment, and sending very firm affirmations of the bond to A'li, Nellath returns her gaze to Roseth with a nod. She does, which makes her and Hers all the more interesting when the plans are mentioned. I don't know if she knows how to make flight patterns or not, but we will make them, and they will be better than anything those so-called leaders would ever hope to have in their heads, and we will show them all for the worthless fools they are! A light trumpet follows that little boast as she takes a deeper step into the water, still not deep enough to try this swimming thing yet.
