Practice was over, but Jasrai and Roseth were still working. The green was practicing launching herself into the air and gaining lift before gliding to the ground. Jasrai was on the ground, forcing herself through repetitions of the physical work-out the human weyrlings were subjected to daily. She was doing her forty sixth push-up, and her entire body was shaking with the effort. Jasrai had never been particularly fit, and a turn as a candidate had done nothing to get rid of the fat that had settled around her stomach, hips, and thighs. As a new weyrling, she had been badly out of shape, and it had been an effort to keep up with A'li and Y'kar. She could keep up now, and she had lost a significant amount of weight in the past half turn since Impressing Roseth, but she couldn't see it in herself. She still considered herself slow and heavy, and so she defied her basically lazy nature and worked. Hard.
Sinking to the ground to begin her forty seventh push-up, Jasrai watched the shadow of a dragon flying overhead. She didn't know if it was Roseth or some other dragon, but she hoped it was Roseth. She hated to work out in front of others. It embarrassed her to be the fat woman greenrider. One of the young men who hadn't Impressed at the last hatching asked Jasrai how she expected a green dragon to get off the ground with a sow like her on her back. The comment had stuck in her mind. She conjured it in moments like this one, when her body threatened to give out on her and she pushed herself up once more. Three more, and then fifty sit-ups, and then a lap around the bowl, and then she could go to the hot springs.
Her pair of firelizards lay on the ground beside her, curled around each other in sleep. It was a chilly day, and the pair were too loyal to her to retreat indoors as long as she was outdoors, but they were neither of them interested in freezing. Every so often the younger of the pair, Satish, would poke her head out from under Flynxerrat's bronze wing and warble a query at Jasrai, projecting hopeful thoughts of food and warmth to her human. Her concentration on that one awful moment broken, Jasrai's arms gave out on her and she collapsed into the dust of the weyrbowl, sobbing in frustration.
Flynx and Sati were there immediately, both trying to burrow into the space between her chin and her chest, and Roseth landed with an admirable alacrity for one who had not yet perfected her flying technique. All three draconic creatures wanted to know what was wrong with their human.

Mine, one of the little greens is practicing. And Hers is working out as well- the one with the girl rider. Did you want to say hello? I know you were interested in meeting one of them when you had the time. Feylith crooned a greeting to the female dragon below.
Sure, Feymine. It'll be nice. Tethis teased her dragon with the nickname, and felt the rumble under her which signaled his amusement. And then he was diving (showoff!) towards the girl- just in time to see her arms give out. Before Feylith even landed, Tethis was springing off of him, landing roughly on the ground and hurrying over to the other woman. She looked up at Roseth, gave the green a nod, and knelt down next to the other girl.
Jasrai and her Roseth. Feylith supplied helpfully. He had a good memory for other dragons. Tethis thanked him mentally.
"Jasrai, right?" she asked finally. "And Yours is Roseth?" her voice was soft, and only after she'd spoken did she reach out to touch the other woman on the shoulder. Wave, her bronze, chirped to the other firelizards, and green Camo followed suit. "Are you okay?" she pretended not to notice the sobs, squatting next to the other woman.

Roseth eyed both the blue and his rider. She wasn't particularly keen on allowing either one of them near her Jasrai when her human was feeling so vulnerable, but she was able - vaguely - to recall her last interaction with a blue dragon and she didn't think Jasrai would thank her for getting into another altercation so soon. Besides, this blue had greeted her pleasantly a little earlier, and she was inclined to feel kindly toward him for that. Unless or until he did something to lose her goodwill. She had learned to be wary in the last half turn.
Jasrai, there's a person coming, Roseth warned, not sure if her rider had noticed Tethis and Feylith landing.
"Nngh," Jasrai growled, curling her tired and sore arms around the firelizards that were crowding her. I suppose I should consider sitting up, then?
That might be a good idea, yes, Roseth replied after several moments' consideration. By the time Roseth came to her conclusion, Tethis had already reached her, so the process was begun too late. It wasn't as though it was a speedy process. Sitting up involved pushing herself up again, which was exactly what her arms had given up on doing moments earlier. They weren't enthusiastic about doing it again.
Jasrai groaned softly and pretended not to notice Tethis crouching beside her. Likewise, she resisted the urge to shrug off her hand. She reminded herself that the woman was trying to be friendly, and considering how rare that was at Telgar, she shouldn't do anything to antagonize her. With an effort she sat up, releasing her loose hold on her firelizards. Her hands free, Jasrai rubbed her face with both hands, pushing her fingers through her hair and using the heels of her hands to wipe away her tears. She doubted she was fooling anyone, but honor was satisfied.
Flynx saved her from prolonged contact by taking up his usual place on her shoulder and making it clear that he would do so whether or not Tethis left her hand there. Satish fluttered into Jasrai's lap and looked at Camo and Wave without much interest. If anything, she felt a little suspicious of Camo. That other green better not try to take Fynx's attention away from her, Sati, who should be the only green in his life besides Roseth.
"Yes," she said with a hiccuping sigh. "I'm Jasrai and that's Roseth. And I'm fine. Out of shape, but fine." Belatedly she remembered that manners wouldn't go amiss. "Thank you."

Tethis removed her hand when the flit moved for his companion's shoulder. "Tethis, and Feylith." the blue gave a croon to Jasrai, his eyes flashing a blue-green as he rested his large head briefly atop Tethis' own. Out of shape? She looked the other female over. "You're welcome, not that I did anything to thank me for."
Annoyance, as Camo went for her braid, digging her claws into the hair and tugging her head back with the extra weight. "So, the two of you were getting in some extra practice?" she looked over at Roseth again, taking in the long limbs of the almost-grown green. "I could see her working. She was taking off well. And you looked to be doing well- good form, but I was high enough up that it was hard to see." Tethis herself looked fairly muscular and her skin was richly tanned. "I've got to admit I was impressed." more impressed than she thought she would be by the kind of person who had Impressed one of the three green hellions.

Jasrai sent a mental impression of approval to Flynx. She was perfectly fine with him doing that. She didn't really want people touching her even at the best of times for fear that they would be repulsed by her fleshiness, but when she was sweaty and covered in dust from the weyrbowl she really didn't want to be touched. In response, the bronze nuzzled her chin. He paid no mind to Camo or Sati, who was giving her the stinkeye. He had pleased his Jasrai. All was well in his world.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Bluerider," Jasrai said, her manners returning to her. "I thank you for deigning to talk to me and evincing an interest in my well-being." Well. Somewhat.
Rather than move and have her muscles protest some more, Jasrai remained in the kneeling position she'd adopted when she sat up. It meant Sati got to keep her lap and Jasrai was only minimally uncomfortable. Just the same, if this conversation was to be long, Tethis would either have to sit down or Jasrai would have to stand up. Privately, Jasrai was hoping for the former. She was so tired she didn't even want to think about standing up. And she still had three more push-ups, fifty sit-ups and a lap of the bowl to run, she reminded herself.
I'm going to be better at diving than you when I'm older, Roseth informed Feylith matter-of-factly, having determined that Jasrai was all right. She was just out of sorts. Maybe it was that time of month. Not that Roseth could remember last time, but a quick peek into Jasrai's mind told her that she correct in supposing that the human would be grouchy if it was that time of month.
"Yes. If I want to keep up with the others in my weyrling group I have to put in extra time. I'm too heavy and out of shape to be much good at most strenuous physical activities. Shells, most physical activities that are only moderately strenuous leave me out of breath. I'm glad you approve." And she really was glad to have someone's approval. To her knowledge the weyrlingmaster neither knew nor cared about her extra practice sessions, so having anyone express approval was a welcome thing. A part of her wanted to preen like Roseth when she was freshly oiled.
"Roseth is far better at our lessons than I. She puts in the extra time to humor me," Jasrai explained. Roseth's eyes were blue with contentment. She liked when Jasrai acknowledged her superiority. So often Jasrai was modest and self-effacing for the both of them.

Jasrai looked tired. Tethis remained squatting next to the greenrider, while Feylith turned an eye to Roseth. I'm sure you will be. he agreed easily. You'll give your pursuers a fine chase when you are fully grown. You're well on your way to being lovely. Not that you aren't lovely for your age, of course. Then his eyes drifted back to His. Mine, the greenrider looks tired. Don't you still have some fruit in your pack?
Smart boy. Tethis pushed up, moving over to her blue. A few moments later and she was on her way back, a mildly fresh fruit in each hand. "Feylith and I spend a lot of time at the beach when we can." she said finally, mildly. "Fruit is a healthy snack. It'll help you keep up your energy for your practice." she wouldn't deny the girl's size- not that, in her eyes, it was as bad as Jasrai seemed to think. "If you work too hard without feeding your body, you'll burn out." She gave the other rider a smile. "And trust me, that won't get you anywhere." Glancing over at Roseth, she nodded appreciatively. "She's got good form. You take good care of her. She'll be a beauty when she grows into herself."
She dropped into a full sit near Jasrai. "I'm sorry if I'm invading uninvited, it has just been a while since I've gotten to spend much time with another female rider. There are a lot of men in the Weyr, and I'm the only female in my Wing. If I'm bothering you, tell me." her teal eyes were bright, a certain resignation in them that Jasrai may have recognized from her own.

Roseth preened visibly at Feylith's compliment. Yes! That was what people were supposed to say. They were supposed to agree with her. Because wasn't she right all the time? And of course she would be the best at everything. How could she not? She was Roseth the Great. If she had been a cat, she might have purred. Instead, she stretched luxuriously to show off her physique so that Feylith could fully admire it and then settled back into a crouch with her forked tail wrapped around her claws.
That's true, Roseth said, accepting the compliments as her due.
She was old enough to know what Feylith was talking about when he spoke of pursuers, though she hadn't been feeling any inclinations toward flight of that sort. She had no plans of making that kind of flight unless it would give her a chance to show off her skills. She knew she was good, but she wasn't yet in peak form. With the equivalent of a casual shrug, she said, You might give chase, since you're so impressed by me.
Jasrai was not having such an easy time dealing with the human half of the pair. She wasn't quite sure what to make of Tethis's pronouncement that she and her dragon spent a lot of time at the beach. Herself Jasrai didn't really swim and was more than content to float in the hot springs, providing she could do so in perfect privacy. Maybe it was to explain how she had fruit in Telgar's chilly season? Jasrai was not at her best when tired.
Shortly thereafter, when it seemed Tethis was actually offering her one of the pieces of fruit, rather than simply expounding on the virtues of fruit as a food group Jasrai's found the interaction more difficult. She would have loved to accept the fruit. It was definitely a treat in this Weyr. But she couldn't eat it. She was very careful about monitoring how much she ate, and when, and if she ate now that would throw off her schedule. Maybe she could just take the fruit and save it for later? It would mean eating less at dinner, if she had dinner at all, but the fruit would be a treat...
"You're right," Jasrai agreed mildly. Personally, she had different views on the care and feeding of her body, and obviously Tethis had never been fat. People who had never been fat were always full of "helpful" advice. The only thing Jasrai had ever found helpful in losing weight was simply not eating and being as active as she could stand to be. The problem was that she lacked the willpower to keep it up. She'd broken her regime several times since Roseth hatched.
It was easier to talk about Roseth. "I try to take good care of her. She's only the most important thing in my life. As she frequently reminds me. And you're certainly welcome. Despite my firelizards' deplorable lack of manners, I'm actually glad to see you. Simply being reminded that it's possible to make it as a woman on a fighting dragon is a kindness. And you ride a blue."
The firelizards Jasrai had mentioned were settling. Flynx had his tail wrapped loosely around her throat like a necklace and Sati had stretched out across Jasrai's knees and was stealing body heat as efficiently as she could. She had decided Camo wouldn't try anything.

Tethis could feel Feylith's amusement and pleasure tapping on her mind. Amusement because the green was so young and feisty; pleasure in His getting interaction that didn't drive them off. I might, he agreed easily. Then again, I might not. He stretched out his wings- a hefty wingspan he had, being huge for a blue dragon- then resettled himself. I guess we will see when the time comes.
Tethis hid her frown. She'd never had too much of a problem with her weight, she had always lived a very active lifestyle. Then she easily shrugged it off. It was Jasrai's body, it was Jasrai's decision how to treat it. And then her tanned, rough face broke into a smile. "Are you only trying to drop weight, or build hard muscle?" she asked curiously. "As for Feylith," she glanced over at her lifemate, who crooned softly to Tethis, "It was his decision to Choose me, it's Telgar's choice to either suck it up, or transfer me." she gave a wry smile. "I'm a bluerider, I'm a woman on a Sharding fighting dragon, and I'm here to fight Thread." she shrugged. "It's a hard life, and it is hard to be accepted. Frankly I think it might be harder for you, being on a green. Not that I would know." she had never met a female greenrider, just another female bluerider. "I've never gotten to sit down with one in a Wing. I can say that my Wingleader, I'dan, is very open-minded and fair. He expects everyone to work hard though- especially me- I don't see you having a problem with that, however." Tethis nodded. "If you ever need a workout partner, feel free to ask. I might not be good for much, but I can help a little."
Then Tethis turned her attentions back to Roseth. "It's good of you to remind Yours of your proper place in her life." blue-green eyes were amused. "I have to do the same to Feylith all the time."
You do not! he cried, startled enough to allow Jasrai to hear him. His eyes whirled yellow for a moment, thinking she was serious, and then he felt the love pouring from His. You know you are Mine, Mine. he nudged her hard with his nose, catching her right in the stomach and knocking her over. His wouldn't be hurt by the rough play, though she might have a bruise. You take that back right now! The yellow was already fading from his eyes, easily reassured of the love His bore for him.
"Alright, alright, I give." As Tethis pushed herself back up, she kissed the tip of Feylith's large nose. Feylithmine, are you having fun? She settled herself back in her sitting position, one leg atop the other in a masculine pose.
You know I like spending time with greens. Even young ones, as they will get big someday, and then I will chase them. I would have more fun if you didn't tease me so, Mine! Feylith was composed enough now to keep his mind-voice private, just for the two of them. He allowed Camo to settle on his headknob, the green chittering at him for knocking over her Person- Camo had been in her hair! The little green was sending out waves to he and Roseth of a squished green mass- dramatically reenacted and enlarged.

Roseth settled her wings and flopped onto her side with a "whuff" of a sigh. Her sides deflated all at once, but reinflated quickly with her next breath. She didn't care one way or the other if Feylith chased her when she finally took flight. She was certain that there would be any number of dragons giving chase, and she had no intention of being caught by anyone less than a bronze. She was the best green - the best dragon - in the Weyr, and deserved to be caught by no one less than the second best. Feylith seemed nice, but he was a blue, and if there was one thing Roseth understood well, it was the Weyr hierarchy. No. It would have to be a bronze.
I suppose we will, Roseth agreed affably. He was certainly a large blue, she noted. It was a source of irritation to her that she would neither be the largest nor the smallest green in the Weyr. Out of curiosity she asked him, Are you the largest blue in the Weyr?
"Um. I'd rather lose the weight first and then build muscle, but I do have to have muscle to get through training. We can't always get what we want, I suppose." That seemed like something safe to say. The reason, of course, for wanting to lose the weight and then build muscle was that she hoped if she could just get herself down to a slim base state she could choose how and where to develop her muscles. It was a nice idea, anyway, though she didn't expect things to work out that way.
One corner of her mouth pulled up briefly. "Funny. I always figured it was my choice to either suck it up or request a transfer. There are other Weyrs on Pern, and not all of them feel about riders in our position as Telgar does. Or so I'm told. Maybe when Roseth's old enough, I'll put in for a transfer."
It would be running away, and the very wide prideful streak that ran through Jasrai hated the thought, but the prideful streak wasn't the part of her that most often had to deal with people telling her she didn't deserve her dragon and that they'd be failures anyway. Well. She always tried to stand up for Roseth, but mostly the green didn't need it. Her confidence was unshakable.
I do not want to run away. I want to show them that I'm the best, Roseth said privately. That we are the best. We can do it, you know. If you keep working hard, and I do the same.
Roseth was out of reach physically, but Jasrai extended a feeling of warmth and appreciation for the support. It was welcome, but she tried not to rely on Roseth to bolster her confidence. she knew that if she was ever to be truly all right, she couldn't use Roseth as a crutch. She would have to find something in herself to be proud of. Something that was all hers. Which was far easier said than done, particularly when everyone else seemed keen on telling her that there was nothing about her worth taking pride in.
"I can't see why it should be any more difficult for a greenrider. At least my dragon's female, like a gold. I'm just going to end up with everyone assuming I'm an easy lay." Not that anyone would be interested, she figured. She couldn't wait for Roseth's first flight and then waking up to see the horrified face of her partner when he realized who it was he'd bedded. Oh, wouldn't that be fun.
She was about to say something about maybe she'd get lucky and assigned to I'dan's wing when Roseth was fully grown when Feylith's outburst startled her. Roseth had a habit of talking to A'li and Y'kar, but she otherwise limited her communication to Jasrai in terms of human contact. It was a very rare thing for either Kannaroth or Nellath to reciprocate by addressing Jasrai. Hearing Feylith was startling. Watching him bowl his rider over was not. Roseth had done something similar to her at the hatching and it was still one of her favorite ways of capturing Jasrai's complete attention.
Roseth watched Feylith's antics without moving. She would never do that to her Jasrai when there were people around. They would yell at Jasrai for not being able to control her dragon. Even though this Tethis didn't seem like she would, a dragon couldn't be too careful.

Not the largest, I don't think, but one of them, The blue didn't sound proud or puffed up, just matter-of-fact. And not one of the fastest, but I have more stamina than any other blue I've met. he stretched out his neck lazily. Mine needs friends. he watched Tethis and Jasrai interacting with blue eyes.
Tethis gave Jasrai a big grin. "Feylith is a Telgar dragon. This is his home, his people, his family. I will stay and fight for them. In my mind it is up to them to drive me away or make peace with me. In truth, they ignore what displeases them, so I haven't had too much a problem so far. It's not like they have been deliberately antagonistic." She bit into her own piece of fruit, looking thoughtful. "But then again..." she didn't really pay much attention to the old farts around Telgar. "I spend most of my time with the people willing to accept a little diversity." Which was why she could be achingly lonely sometimes.
She patted Feylith's head, tossed him the last part of her fruit as he sent her a longing thought for a taste of it. He snapped it up easily, not even needing to swallow. He crooned at her and leaned his head lightly against her. Would you be up for some practice of your own, Roseth? Like Mine, I may not be the most proficient, but I do have some actual training in a Wing that you may find useful for practices?

Roseth considered. Feylith was not the largest blue in the Weyr. That was too bad for him. But it did place them in the same position of being neither the largest nor the smallest. Roseth wasn't sure how she felt about that, or if she should feel anything about it at all. She decided it didn't mean anything, and somehow managed to rationalize it so that Feylith came off as average and she remained superlative.
Mine needs friends, too, Roseth said. I will always be the best of her friends, but she should have others.
"Roseth's not too keen on the idea of leaving either. She thinks it sounds like running away," Jasrai said truthfully. What she didn't say was that she would have killed to simply be ignored, and that if she had to continue enduring what she did now, it wouldn't make a difference to her what Roseth wanted. Roseth was a dragon with a three-day memory span. She would barely remember Telgar in a few months.
"I can't say I've noticed too many people willing to accept diversity around here. But then, I lead a restricted life." She smiled to make it sound less like she was whining. She wasn't really. She was fully aware that there were people who lived harder lives than hers and many who lived easier lives who would trade places with her in an instant. "At least that part eases up, right?"
Roseth watched the interaction between Feylith and Tethis. A part of her wanted to do something similar to show that she and Jasrai had a close relationship like that, but to be honest, she and Jasrai didn't have that kind of relationship. Touch was not as vital to their bond as it seemed to be for the blue and his human. Instantly she convinced herself that it was a sign her bond was stronger than theirs, and therefore had no need for tactile reassurances.
Arching her neck, Roseth replied, I don't see how it could hurt if I practiced with you.

"It is running away." Tethis agreed. She didn't bother to soften that agreement. "Something I've never really done. I was a Fishcraft Apprentice before I came here; hard work is something I am used to." she ducked her head, hiding her face for just a moment. "But those first few months after Feylith and I bonded were the hardest in my life. I was so idealistic, thinking this would be a winnable battle. We'd be the best, and charm people into thinking my boy and I were a good team. A turn later, when we joined our Wing... well, it wasn't winnable, but you can call it a draw." her lips twisted wryly.
After another moment, Tethis stretched out her legs. "As for it getting easier? Yeah, once you are in a wing, they pretty much consider you free to do as you need to. You're an adult. Don't get caught doing anything stupid and the people are just as forgetful as a dragon. At least, that's worked for me." It was fairly obvious, probably to both of them, that Tethis' experiences would be different from Jasrai's own. After all, Tethis was an abomination to be ignored. Jasrai was an abomination that would have some sexual appeal to other blueriders and brownriders. She was a woman, on a dragon that theirs would want to fly. "I figure people look at you differently because of what happened at the Hatching. I figure they will until they're adults, and just another dragon in a wing."
Mine, Roseth said she would practice with me. Do you mind staying here a bit longer while I show her some things? Feylith interrupted the serious conversation.
No, my love. Have fun. the blonde woman turned. "Feylith said he wants to show Roseth some things. Apparently he likes her." her teal eyes were amused. "But then, Feylith likes ladies."
Feylith's blue head swung towards Roseth. Want to show Yours some fancy moves now, then?

Thanks, b***h. Way to be motivational, Jasrai couldn't help thinking. We can't all be thin little slips who grew up with hard work.
That's not nice, Roseth chastised her human. What if she heard you?
She can't. And unless you tell Feylith, there's no way she'll know. Mind your own business, would you?
She wasn't really in the best of moods, and she didn't really need it confirmed for her that her favorite option for the future was taking the easy way out and running away. She hadn't discussed it with anyone but Roseth, and now she recalled why. Y'kar and A'li would only be disappointed, if not disgusted that she'd even consider it. Truth be told, she didn't much care. Their dragons were close, but she'd never really grown that close to either of the riders. They were too young, and had too little in common besides their dragons. She wouldn't be heartbroken to leave them.
"Who gives a damn about what happened at the hatching? Two idiots didn't get out of the way. It happens all the time. They're just looking for excuses to be rotten. I can't wait until one of the stupid golds flies. Then they'll have something new to gossip about." Yes, Jasrai's mood was definitely taking a downward turn for no good reason.
"How nice for him," Jasrai said, trying not to sound as bitter as she still felt. "Sorry. Don't mind me. I appreciate that he's willing to help her, regardless of his motivation."
Why not? Roseth replied to Feylith, the image of nonchalance. Maybe it will put her out of her sour mood.

"It does happen. From what I can tell, and I am no politician, you three got caught up in the politics of the thing. One last ditch at staying on top, and every failure and every issue is going to pointed out again and again." She was apparently making the other girl angry, judging by the slighty snippish words. "As for the Rising, it will happen soon, and it does make me nervous."
Who would become Weyrleader? She had a few votes as to who would be good leaders, but they all left the future of women in the Weyrs up in the air, in her mind. Kaya of blue Rumath was in a wing belonging to one of the potential leaders, and she was in another. Whether their wingleaders would stand by them, and what sort of pressure would be on them, weighed on her heavily. "Do you have any ideas on who will fly first, or who will catch them?" That should be a safe enough topic.
Feylith looked over at Roseth. Then up in the air, my pretty lady, and we shall practice. Our flight shall soothe the minds of Ours. I will show mine that I am strong enough to do her proud, and you will give yours a fine show of your grace. the last part of his statement was rife with challenge. Now, follow me! And with that, he started showing Roseth a few simple maneuvers. Nothing heavy, not on the first session.

Jasrai bit the inside of her cheek as Tethis spoke, reminding herself of what Tofir had said to her, and the fact that there were only two females riding fighting dragons at Telgar besides herself, and she couldn't really afford to alienate either one. It was a different trio that she belonged to in that respect, but she was definitely the least of that trio. In Weyr hierarchy, blues ranked above greens, and even if that wasn't the case their dragons were older and they were both assigned to wings. She was outranked, and couldn't help feeling basically inferior. They were thin and not unattractive and people at least seemed to think they were good for something. It must be nice.
She bit the inside of her cheek harder. Those weren't the thoughts she was supposed to be having. She was supposed to be trying to learn from these women and maybe even befriend them. Which meant going through the stupid motions of introductory courtesy and not snapping at people for being blithe. And Tethis mentioned a good point. There was a lot of political fall-out surrounding Roseth's hatching that Jasrai and the others had no control over. Just the same, there wasn't any good reason she could see for the dragons who hatched then to be viewed with so much hostility. At least they'd all hatched, even if one did go between. Dragons went between from other clutches, too, Jasrai remembered.
Roseth climbed to her feet more or less gracefully. Her limbs were still a little too long for the rest of her and her wings didn't always feel like they were proportionate either, but at least when she was in the air that wasn't so much of a bother. She loved flying. She knew one day she would be the fastest and the most difficult to out-perform in the air, and she was actually content to set her sights on someday. After all, someday was a very vague notion of time. It could be tomorrow. It wouldn't surprise her if it was, in fact.
Jasrai is always impressed with my grace, she retorted, joining Feylith in the air. After that she had to concentrate on following him. The lessons she was doing with her clutchmates were different. Less challenging. Less interesting too.
A new topic. Probably a good thing, Jasrai thought. She was getting herself too worked up. She didn't have to do that. She shouldn't do that. It served no purpose except to make herself look bad, and there were so many other things people could criticise her for, she really didn't need to add to the list.
"Hm...I don't know. I suppose it would be nice if Kaveth flew, simply because her rider seems a little less...power crazed? Can I say that without people jumping out of the walls to drag me away to a dark place where I'll never be heard from again?" She cracked her neck and rolled her shoulders before stiffness could set in, as she could feel it trying to do.
"I don't really have a preference as to catching them, though I suppose if I'dan's bronze won the flight that would put you in the Weyrleader's wing."
Jasrai, look at me! Roseth demanded, distracting her rider as she executed one of the maneuvers Feylith had shown her. Am I not wonderful?
You are. Absolutely, Jasrai agreed, stroking Flynx's bronze head and Sati's green body. Too many creatures, not enough hands.
