Physical Description:
5'9" and still growing; he is a muscular tawny boy with already a small six pack from many years of working on the farm. His hair is a rich and dark chestnut brown that flows in waves over his shoulders and down his back kept in place by a tight braid. His eyes are a blue-grey like the sky turning towards a storm with lashes that are long and full. He could be quite a heartbreaker if he cleaned up more often but most of the time he is covered with the daily dirty of the farm and field not really caring much for his appearance otherwise.
Personality:
Veyes is a boy with two states of being...the face he shows those in the Hold...an average, quiet, hold boy that works hard for his father...and the face that he shows his mother; the energetic creative creature that has dreams of his future and longs to follow them.
Veyes seems to be the distant aloof type to many people that know him mostly because he has lived with a father who is an abusively strict man. Since he works out on the farm so much, opportunities to make friends have been few and far between. His father doesn't promote much of a social life for him so he rarely interacts with outsiders. Most Adults think of him as the obedient, good boy not knowing his troubled home life; while most Kids might find him...odd and distracted. But overall, this act has been to protect himself and his mother from his father's hand and to hide the misfortune of his home life.
But...when Veyes is with his "friends in the barn" or with his mother alone, he is a bright, creative person that's is an actor and a daring doer of a boy. He'd probably be quite popular if he showed this side to others. In these moments, he imaginative mind is filled with ideas on how to change the world and invent new things. If challenged in this environment, he wouldn't back down; taking on the most difficult task with the determination to succeed.
UPDATE: Personality Changes (Weyr Life) 7/09/09
After a turn in the Weyr, Veyes has changed from the aloof boy that had difficult times in crowds to someone who can actually can stand in groups, be social and enjoy the company of others without thinking much about it anymore. Mostly due to the tighter quarters and situations this change was inevitable.
Veyes is growing up a bit more after several setbacks from incidents in the Weyr. One of his bigger turning points came from the "Anti Feast" where he learned a few valuable lessons about thinking before acting. Realizing the consequences of his actions...and how they affect others around him. While he is still the vivid dreamer, its a tempered more so by the actual "thinking" of how to achieve the dreams rather than a complete wing and a pray.
He has a few friends and since the "Anti Feast" is more interested in their well being than he might have been prior. He actively communicates and attempts to feel out relationships which is a big change from when he first arrived. Although, he regrets the loss of his good friend Conomor (C'mor) due to the Anti Feast. They are not friends anymore and haven't spoken since the occasion. But Veyes wants to compete with C'mor one day an prove to him that he's worth more than Thread. Although, C'mor is a bronze rider now and he's not sure how he'd ever achieve this goal at this point. But some day he swears to make C'mor notice...
His determination nowadays is more obvious/directed than before slowly becoming -goal-oriented. But having a mentor to guide him has made things easier to remain focused. With L'thor's guidance and outgoing personality, Veyes has become very aggressive about learning dragon rider skills in any and all free time...long before he ever gets a dragon. Even though he cannot be certain he will ever impress; he plans on proving he can be better than the labels some folks have placed on him since his "wineskin mistake".
Sometimes he has found his imagination leaning towards the actual issues revolving around the Weyr, things he thinks need or should be changed. He's still trying to learn how change would be best put forth and wonders what he would do if he were the man in charge of the Weyr. He is unsure if he could fill shoes like that because he's still learning how to fill the current ones. Even without a dragon that would make most of the decision of his direction in Weyr life, he can't help but wonder where things could go. Basically, he's had a broadening of personality as he thinks more about how to help others than just himself.
In the end, he still is following the dream...still believe his imagination can shape the future in his mind but the vision has to be wrought into reality by his own hands.
History:
Veyes' world revolved around a few things in life, working on the farm and imagining that he was some place else; anywhere but in the Hold.
In the Real World.. his life has been a part of Ruatha Hold, his father, a tough farmer and his mother a busy drudge to the Lord Holder's household. For Veyes, there was little opportunity to be anything else but...another lowly farmer. His older brother, had all the luck, and by chance caught the attention of a Masterherder who pressed Veyes' father to let the boy go at an early age to to start learning about Runnerbeasts, one of the more valuable assets of Ruatha Hold. His parents were proud of his older brother's accomplishments but Veyes could only feel the pains of jealous each time the subject came up at the dinner table.
Veyes wanted the same opportunity to be like his brother but his father had other plans and expected him and his younger brother to take over the farm one day. His father told him that the best he could hope for was the local education that most hold children received and the promise of a pretty wife at his side. However, Veyes couldn't accept that on the inside even if he nodded and said "Yes" to his father just to avoid a beating.
Toiling on the farm covered in his own sweat could have worn his soul away if it weren’t for his loving mother. She always told him that it was ok to dream; even if life seemed to be going nowhere, he always had his dreams. At times, it was strange hearing that from a woman who did some of the foulest jobs in the Hold. But every time she came home, she would tell Veyes the most creative stories...of worlds that never ceased to amaze him. He wondered how she could be happy with her lot in life; he doubted she really was happy on the inside but there was nothing a boy his age could do to change it.
So during the hot days, he had to work very hard to appease his demanding father and avoid a possible beating for being lazy then later he would sneak off to his special place; a place no one could set foot in....his Dream World.
When he was alone, his dreams became his personal reality. These were the times he'd scamper to stables under the pretense of checking the animals and "play out his dreams". Sometimes he would imagine he was an arrogant Hold Lord...even use the draft runner beast as his great stead ridding the land of tyranny. Of course, the same draft beast was his fanciful dragon and he was the best rider on the planet; fighting the bravest of battles against impossible odds....A lone rider versus all the thread in the sky. Yes....here, in the confines of stable, he never doubted himself.
With those dreams, came many homemade items created out of the various things that were useless to others. A thread worn robe once worn by someone in the Lord Holder's house was cut down by his mother so he could make a cape to tie at his throat. One time, he actually saw a dragon rider and his dragon that came to call as a messenger. And while the men were busy, all he could do was stare at the dragon and the riding straps.
It was later, after many sketches in the dirt and a lot of scrounging, that he finally crafted himself a makeshift riding rig and straps out of scrapes of hides and leather. It may not have been anywhere close to the real thing but his imagination could fill any gaps and it sort of fit the draft runner beast.
Sometimes his mother would ask about that world he made for himself while she washed clothes and he would tell her great stories of his exploits, victories and acts of heroism. She'd laugh and tug on his nose telling him that she was so proud of his accomplishments then filled his arms with wet laundry to hang. When she smiled so vividly, he felt like he could be anyone...do anything.
But if his father happened to hear them, he 'd ruin these tender moments; shoving Veyes back to the harsh reality with a open-handed slap or a solid belt to the backside telling him that he'd never be anything more than what he saw around him. It was during these times his parents would "fiercely argue" and he would slip away to the small room he shared with his younger brother to hide in the sheets wishing he could disappear. The bruises his mother had by covered up in the morning were the ones she took for him and his dreams.
Over the years, Veyes' mother's stories diminished to whispers said late at night after father had gone to bed. She had lost her vibrancy from the daily labor and the "arguments" but still she said fervently that Veyes should never stop dreaming. Veyes wondered if he would become like her one day and it was then he realized; his dreams would only in his mind if he never acted upon them. Maybe that had been the problem all along...while he had dreamt of a new world, he never found a way to change the one he lived in. One late night, as he looked up into his mother's strained face, he finally heard the answer in her unspoken words throughout the years gone by...the truth she would never verbally expressed...He couldn't stay here, he had to leave....somehow.
In the past few days, he has pondered his possibilities...none of them look promising on the surface but anything had to be better than this...right??
Journal with Linked List of RPs from Searched to Life at the Weyr
Pets: None (expect the ones that fill his imaginary world)
Other/Talents:
Veyes is very good storyteller, which has helped him when he actually has had to lie or weasel his way out of things. He is quite creative and will find ways to make things he needs out of what others discard or items he has on hand through the use of various tools from around the farm.
He can cook and do a variety of traditionally woman's work just because there are no other girls on the farm to do the jobs that need to be done so he helps his mother out if she is not back from her job.
Veyes has learned the various skills that any farmer would know about the lands and how to make a living off of it. He has skills in riding and driving a cart/draftrunner beast combination.
