Layn had squeezed her way into the secluded spot that many young candidates use to spy on the queen's clutch, a basket of spiced rolls in hand. The early morning gave her an excuse to reflect and day dream on what is and what could be. On those sands she was sure, even if it was just a hunch like all other candidates had that her counterpart was waiting to hatch and become hers. It was wishful thinking of course she was older and only by some fluke, she was not willing to admit, was she even going to stand on the sands for this clutch. "You'll be too old after the next clutch, so who ever your dragon is better be out there," Layn settled down to look at all of the large gleaming eggs, and the enormous queen. Layn was like any other weyrbrat hoping that her destiny would come and she would be let into mysterious world of dragons. Growing up around them she did not fear them but respected and revered those who held such a strong bond. Taking a bite of a spiced roll Layn sighed.

"You never know..." Rayale whispered, from nearby. He'd had a while, living with some troublesome siblings, to learn to be quiet even though he was alarmingly short and square. "Maybe you'll get lucky." He grinned from ear to ear as he said it, amused to have caught someone sneaking a peek at the eggs, though he hoped they weren't caught by one of the full riders...or by the mother Gold. That would be downright terrifying.

Tideal nerves had been jumbled lately. The second queen was still on the sands and, having not stood for the one previous, he was a bit apprehensive. After wasting the day meandering the halls doing nothing- he was keen to something else to do. What he had in mind was to see the eggs. The sad thing was, he hadn't the slightest idea where to find the viewing spot he'd been told about. Tideal frowned but, after a bit of walking, located the general area of said vantage point. The young man looked around a bit dejectedly until he saw another candidate disappear around the corner. Pausing a moment to consider, Tideal followed. In a moment he found himself facing an awesome view of the golden queen where she and her clutch were settled. It was only the second or third time he'd seen a dragon besides the one that searched him, and he swore to himself that he'd never get tired of the sight. After the quite huge distraction, he remembered the woman that was there and, feeling a moment of annoyance at his gaping, clapped his mouth shut and turned to glare at her. To his surprise, he saw another guy the same age as himself who looked as though he'd just spoken. Frowning at the excess company and his own embarrassment he sat in a far corner.

"Shards!" Layn nearly jumped out of her skin, she turned to look at the short male laughing, "I..I was just.." why did she have to justify what she was doing, he looked like he was doing the same thing. "I've lived her my entire life and watching a queen stand over her eggs still makes my heart pound." She smiled warmly. Silly to say out loud, it probably made everyone hold and weyr bred excited and hopeful to see the future born.
"I'm Layn, I don't believe we've met," she lifted the basket offering one, "Snitched a few while they were still warm, want one?"
"Anyone else out there want a roll?" she joked, not taking her eyes off of the young man who had disturbed her. For priding herself on being observant Layn was not doing a very good job.

Tideal held a laugh as Layn jumped, and remained quiet till she addressed him with a very stale joke. "No." He retorted plainly, examining the two with a glance and internally glad he was sitting. They were both exceptionally short. "I'm Tideal. Anyone out there have a name?" He said dryly, albeit slightly sarcastic. Tideal turned his eyes back to the sands, where the queen had shifted a bit, and spent a moment examining them- which helped to lighten his mood, at the same time his heart gave a quiver of anxiety and excitement.

"I'm Rayale." He explained, still grinning. "Nice to meet you." He included a look to the other boy, who seemed displeased to see them both. Perhaps he had thought he was the only one to have heard about this chance to sneak a look at the eggs. "Ooh." He added, with distinct interest at the hot rolls. "I'd love one! Thank you!" He glanced at the queen and nodded, adding quietly. "...I don't know the Queen's name. either of them. They're huge though...."

(I've asked/haven't gotten an answer on the queen's names. I assumed Layn'd have the answer. :-s)
"Pleasure to meet you, Tideal, Rayale," she bobbed her head in answer and stuffed the rest of the roll into her mouth. The queens are huge, Layn's light brown eyes shifted to the queen in question acknowledging that fact. "She's the most wonderful thing I've ever seen, the biggest and most wonderful. It is so hard to imagine that the small queen that just hatched will be that big."
"Are you both candidates? Where are you from?"
