I wouldn't worry about age too much -- one of my first characters Impressed at 17.

Name: Rayale
Age: 17

Physical Description: Short, at five foot five and not seeming to be getting any taller, just broader, Rayale is heavy, but not fat. His breadth comes from mostly bone and an growing amount of muscle, which makes him look, and feel, clumsy and awkward, though he's not as slow as one might first think. Still he's not bound to win any competitions in personal delicacy. An somewhat awkward youth, Rayale will most likely grow into his looks with age, and become more comfortable with himself as well. His eyes are dark brown, and also his hair, worn moderately long and with part of it pulled back in a short tail to keep it out of his eyes.
Personality: Although he has in his time been one of the bullies, helping his two older brothers (a red haired pair inevitably referred to as 'The Twins'. annoy his younger siblings and relations, his failure to grow into his hefty build brought him under their attentions, and he's lost his taste for bullying in the face of being bullied. He still has somewhat of a brusque sense of humor and can sometimes cause offense without meaning to, though all in all he has a warm sense of humor and enjoys a good time, especially if there's singing involved, though his own voice is more toward 'loud' than 'on key'.
Although he doesn't usually discuss it, he's jealous of those of more slender frame and greater height, and would prefer to be a bit more graceful, since his only really 'graceful' moments are when he's in the water, swimming.
History: Rayale grew up as part of a large family in a Fisher-Hold, and as a middle child, spent the usual amount of time feeling that his younger and older siblings were getting way too much attention, lashing out accordingly and helping the Twin's reign their unique brand of 'terror' on the others. When he finally outgrew this, he found himself considered mostly in light of his strength, not his brains, and he embraced the idea of being a Fisherman's apprentice for two reasons. One because he loves to be around the water, the only time he feels as though he's even remotely graceful, and because it's a profession where both his intelligence and strength can work hand in hand. Before he was unexpectedly searched, he thought that it would be probably the best thing he could do with his life, though he hopes, somewhat desperately, that he might actually impress.
Pets: Rayale has a blue flitt (one of the two SS's) that he has vaguely trained to try and help him retrieve things from places he can't reach, an answer to The Twins taking his things and putting them in locations out of his arms length. This works out moderately well, though Rikk isn't the brightest flit on Pern, and doesn't always retrieve things that belong to Rayale...
So far Rayale has apologetically begun to consider this a very awkward sort of icebreaker.
--update: Due to an incident at the gather, Rayale now has two blue flits:
Rikk and Skyborn
Other/Talents: Rayale has some slight degree of baking skills, from some time spent working with his mother to avoid The Twins, but he doesn't consider it sufficient to even approach apprenticeship.
