Name: Tideal
Age: 17
Sex: Male (heterosexual)
Craft: Glass Smithing
Rank: Glass-smith Apprentice
Physical Description: While somewhat tall at 6’0”, Tideal isn't much in the way of masculine. Built thin and lanky and, while he doesn't lack in strength, hardly muscular. He boasts a tangle of wavy blond hair that more than often won’t settle for anything less than messy and looks almost white after being heavily bleached under the Ista sun. His platinum blond mop makes for a nice coupling with piercing, frosty green eyes set as handsome almonds in his gaunt face. His look, while pretty, could pass for imposing if not for his thinness. At an age between being and adult and a boy, he’s yet to grow into the finely squared shoulders and fuller build his father was said to have in his youth.
Personality: Not exactly softspoken, Tideal is quick to temper. Clever with an apt sense of humor, he can be generally classified as moody. Though he prefers quiet to the general bustle of hold life he’s not unwilling to socialize if the feeling strikes him. Ambitious and quite determined to prove himself, he's gained a fear of failure for the same reasons- both showing up his siblings and living up to his late parent's expectations. His attention to detail leads him to be somewhat aloof, but he makes it a point to never be far behind what is going on.
Tideal had insisted that he’d be named journeyman any day and would readily turn his temper on anyone who said otherwise. He has no reservations demonstrating his exasperation at people who annoy him, even over something stupid. Tideal holds many doubts about his future he tries his hardest not to make known, but his overall attitude seems determined to quash that hope.
What he considers one of his most treasured attributes is his unwavering resolve, which had yet to be swayed. Proving himself strong of mind and of will, his key goal still being achieving more than his parents asked of him. While he's keen to continue on that track, he sometimes wonders why he should care, and doubts all he's done. Sure he just needs to try harder, he always puts his all into whatever he does.
History: Born and raised at Ista Hold, the young glass-smith is from a large family, with his sister the eldest and two elder brothers. The sister is a well accomplished journeywoman, 10 years his senior and a glass-smith as well. The sister, Flornja, following their parents death has taken it upon herself to bring up her younger brother. She often instilled in him a high respect for their parents, who he never knew, and this leads him to a great desire to live up to the same expectations they had placed on his sister. Tideal’s older brothers, never much for high status, were quick to settle down and raise families of their own away from Ista. One pursued mining and the other a simple life fishing in Southern. Brins and Kolerr, respectively, never took much interest in their siblings at Ista.
Tideal’s childhood was relatively normal, growing up in beaches and sun. He was always gangly and awkward, but grew quickly. He joined the glass-smith craft following his sister. She’d always say how much their parents would expect of him, hoping to help him on his was to a happy, successful life. This only made him resentful when he deduced his failure at his chosen craft. He refused to tell her, or to give up, and developed a heated mind-set, even though this didn’t stop him from admiring Flornja.
After about a year learning about different sands and temperatures, fires and kilns, a dragon arrived at Ista Hold. They were one of the first holds to be searched for the latest clutch at the Weyr being only just south of the Weyr. Tideal, though of age, wasn’t quick to step up without his sister’s encouragement. She loved him, but she really wanted him to go somewhere in life, as well as leave her free to travel and work to attain her mastery. His sister always swore he just needed something monumental to help turn him around.
The magnificent green and her rider, a brawny and wizened old man, were swift to spirit away the pertinent youth to the Weyr. Flornja was overjoyed as she hugged Tideal goodbye. When he reached the Weyr, Tideal was slow to adjust, but with his foot in the door to living up to, even surpassing his parents, he’d go to any length to persevere. Resolved, he began spending more time wandering the much larger Weyr. Investigating and wondering whats what about being a dragonrider, and why its so ‘special’.
