I decided to take the "wife" to homecoming this weekend and found everything...out of proportion. The music was a collection of ghetto hip hop and overplayed techno, but the guy cranking it all out of the stereo system looked like a Quaker (what?). The theme was "A Night In Hollywood", and after about two hours, the wall decoration of the Hollywood hills collapsed upon itself. When the DJ started to play Sand Storm by DJ Darude, and the dance floor turned into an adolescent rape pit, we decided to leave with a few friends and go to Chili's. The resulting trip proved to be much more fun in the end, as we blasted Rick Roll and an underground techno station we found along the way on the car stereo. Now I'm debating on whether or not we should go to school dances in the future. rolleyes

I went to three proms in high school, one in eight grade, as well as several 'sock hops' (dances following sporting events). With all of them, the music was identical to what you described. I once requested a song from... err... late 80s early 90s? The 'DJ' gave me an 'Are you kidding?' look.
Mostly, my friends and I just stood around and criticized the preps and jocks attire. Our night's enjoyment was the dinner before, or fining a haunt after. I really don't know WHY I kept going back to the dances, wasting money on tickets and attire.
Since those events spanned five-ten years ago, I really don't think future events will change. Ever considered hosting an alternative? An event that will feature music you and your friends like?

Yah I went to homecoming last year. I didn't like it very much. Almost ALL of the songs I requested were denied, and Sitting down watching everyone else grind wasn't that great either.
Its kinda like when I went to a 24 hour skate the dj straight up told me "The crowd is mostly African American, we cant play music other than rap."
Talk about stereotyping.
I just don't find rape from the front very fun... sweatdrop

Yeah... I went to a lot of dances in high school. Never really danced at them, either, unless my boyfriend and I felt like slow dancing to (God Bless the) Broken Road, You're the Inspiration(which we always requested from junior year on), or whatever slow song came up; or if it was something we could line dance or two-step to. xD Yes I come from a hick town!
But yeah. We mostly stood around and watched our friends make fools of themselves in the mosh pit that would gather around the DJ station.
Least fun dance experience: First homecoming of sophomore year, my first date with my as-of-that-night-to-now boyfriend. Got asked to dance to some rap "song" by the least attractive, not exactly the best-mannered, kid in school. My boyfriend refused for me (I looked to him for help), then he and I immediately relocated. Call it snobbish if you want, but I would think that you leave a girl alone when it's obvious that she's with another guy. :/

I must confess I didn't go to anything in highschool, but I went to every dance in 7th and 8th grade....I had one decent moment in 7th grade on Valentine's day. Me and this guy, Bobby (who turned out to be a jerk) made fun of the preps and headbanged to "Mmmbop". We got a bunch of people nearby to join us. It was hilarious...other than that it was all fairly miserable. But when you're the new kid, you gotta meet everybody to see who's worth your time.
I skipped my senior prom to help my ex-girlfriend's mom cook a dinner (we started dating after tickets were sold out...but she already knew I had no intention on showing up). That was some TERRIBLE FOOD!! That woman is the nicest person in the world, but damn she uses too much salt.

I go to most of my school dances. I love being with friends, having fun, and being part of the clutter of hormone driven teenagers, called the dance floor. X3

I went to one or two dances in Middle School, and they sucked. ._. Hardly anybody danced and all the dj's played were the same over-played songs that are on the radio every .5 seconds. Pizza was served and all that but I could have sat at home and relaxed instead of wasting my money on going to a bad dance. I'm a sophomore now, and I didn't go to any dances last year. I'm thinking that the things are just as bad now as they were then. neutral

Everything I did was cool. Although there is one embarrassing moment for me. One Valentine's Dance my mom came in. Now this in itself is fine. There were some parents there. But she got down on the dance floor and started dancing. I mean like...wow. Like the kids were doing. Very embarrassing. Even more so because the entire night my feet never touched the dance floor. I was in the corner selling stuff for the dance. The kids loved her. But seeing her dance like that was embarrassing. And yet she was basically my prom date. I had been sick that year and really didn't have a date and she had never had a prom so... This time it wasn't embarrassing. She was a sub at my school this time around (about 2 years later in fact) so everyone knew her and it was cool. Going back in time to jr. high. Yet another cool tiime. We were at a dance and 2 cools things happened. At one point during the dance they played The Electric Slide and everyone started dancing to it. Then at another time (I don't remember how it happened) a giant conga line formed. Fun times. Fun times. Oh. Another memory. Lucky you. Going back in time a year. 6th grade, which in my school district was the last year of elementary school. The good 6th graders got invited to special seasonal dances. We had Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's, and End of School. Lucky me . I got to go to all of them. The memory I want to say is...for the Valentine's Dance (and basically all day at school) I decided to dress up as Eros, or Cupid. Everyone loved it. I had little paper wings on my back. I ever made a bow with some arrows that I shot at people during the day, which they tried to avoid. I guess no one wants to be in love. Okay. Long post. I'll let you rest your eyes now. But my point is...my school events were great.

I've been to a few dances...I hate it, but I tend to get out of control by the end of the night, since my mind pretty much goes 'f*ck this, let's dance!', and looses grip upon reality due to intense headache, loathing, and nervousness.
I really want to go to Prom with my boyfriend next year, just for the sake of going to Prom together heart I don't expect the music or the dancing to be good XD

Never really cared much for these events, dancing and such. The Valentines marathon was cute, and Secret Santa's Dance events had alot of stalkers.
