Introduction

Welcome visitor, to Gion Baraen, one of Gaia's finest Hanamachi. If you are interested in learning more about Geisha and Japan's Ancient Hanamachi lifestyle, you have come to the right place.

If you are already familliar with the Geisha lifestyle, and would like to participate in it, either as a Geisha or as a pantron, please feel free to select from the following links.


The Akiyama Okiya (if you are interested in becoming a Geisha, working for the Okiya, or other Okiya-type help);


The Kawayanagi Ochaya (id you are interested in becoming a waitress or other Ochaya-like help)


Or

The Hanafubuki School of Geisha Arts (if you are interested in teaching or other school-like help).

Common Japanese Terms
These are common Japanese terms you may find in our RPG. It would be a good idea to familliarize yourself with them!

Suffixes
-chan Polite suffix to use to address a person you know well or is younger than or the same age as you
-kun Cute way to address a male, usually one who is young
-sama Usually this refers to someone you highly revere, like a god, goddess, or master
-san Polite suffix to use to address a person you just met or a person who is older than you


People


Geiko Geisha of Kyoto
Maiko Apprentice geisha (in Tokyo they were called hangyoku)
Atotori Ther woman or girl who the okaasan chooses to run the okiya after her.
Imoutochan, Imouto-chan, Imouto-san Little sister.
Okaasan, Okaa-san, Okkasan, Okka-san The title given to the owner of an Okiya, usually translated to 'Mother' or 'Madame'
Okamisan, Okami The owner of an ochaya.
One-san, Oneesan Big sister.
Otokosu Geisha dresser
Danna Geisha's "Husband", a sponsor.



Places


Hanamachi "Flower Town" (hana = flower, machi = town), the name used to refer to geisha districts.
Okiya House where the Geisha and Maiko live.
Ochaya A teahouse where geishas attent ozashikis.

Ozashiki Teaparty.
Goshugi Tip given to Geiko by clients


Clothes

Kimono A Japanese Style dress
Obi A belt used in combination with the Kimono
Zori Thick souled sandals with a 'v' shaped thong
Geta A sandal which has two blocks of wood under it to raise it off the ground
Sensu Folding fan


Furniture


Fusuma Sliding door
Futon Traditional Japanese bed
Tatami Floor mats
Tokonoma A niche in the wall containing ikebana or kakemono (hanging roll).
