Band was something I always wanted to do ever since I first heard a band and when I had the chance to finally choose my instrument in 4th grade; it was a no brainier that I wanted to be a percussionist and I haven't looked back since biggrin

Marching band was the same way. Whenever I saw the high school band march down the street I would just watch in awe. I love how the looked and sounded, especially the drumline. I thought they were the coolest people in the world (even cooler then pokemon and the power rangers xp ). Joining the marching band has been one of the best decisions I've ever made!

If I wasn't in band, I'd probably be 300 lbs of lazyness haha. I might be on the tennis team or something. I really don't know what I'd do without band and I can't see me playing anything else other then the drums. Maybe the clarinet or sax, but I would have probably given up on those long ago. I would be as passionate with any other instrument then I am with percussion.

What about the rest of you?

Why did you join band?
Why did you pick the instrument that you did?
What do you think you would be doing if you didn't join the band?
What instrument, if any, would you play if you didn't pick the one you did?

Well my sister joined band in 6th grade, when I was in third grade. I never payed any attention at the concerts and dreaded when they came around because we had to go to the middle school.
I didn't even want to be in band.

Then I saw her freshman year show and I was completely sure I was gonna do trumpet because there was an awesome trumpet solo in it.

Then 6th grade came around and I joined band, still sure I wanted to play trumpet. Then just about everyone played wanted to do trumpet so I wanted to do percussion like my sister because I wanted to march snare.
Then 9 people wanted to do percussion so I went to saxophone. Then like 6 other people wanted to do saxophone, so, because there was about 5 of everything and one member of low brass, I went to trombone.
Best decision of my life.
I love it so much and we're already planning what we're going to wear to our Christmas Concert.
(We (my group of friends, mostly percussion and low brass but also a flute and a sax) all going to dress alike and me and my friend are going to bring fedoras for everyone to where on stage.

The band needed Flutes...
I told my band director that I wanted to play Oboe, he said no, so I chose flute. I love band now. And I can't wait for Marching band.
And I was also interested in music so...yep.

I really wanted to play the Tuba... but my dad said no, so I decided to play the trumpet.

When I was in 4th grade, the music teacher at our school told all the 4th graders about band. I saw a picture of the clarinet and was like, "that thing looks funny. I'm going to play it."

And I've been playing since 5th grade and always enjoy playing the clarinet. biggrin

your band director is a crazy man
you get scholarships and whatnot handed to you
as long as you can make a noise from a double reed instrument...

My friend made me join band (its been a good experience thus far).
My father used to play Alto Sax, so I picked it. My same friend also had one, so I could st art practicing.
I would be in PE (ugh).
Clarinet probably.

I joined band in 4th grade and I played trumpet, I did this just to prove to my family that I could play trumpet longer then they could, and I hated band, I couldn't play the music well and the BDs didn't make it fun at all, until 7th grade when the BD suggested I switch to Euphonium, best thing I ever did, ever since 7th grade I don't see how I could live without band

Why did you join band?
-- Because everyone on both sides of my family had been in band at some point in life. And the HS band looked awesome marching down teh street. xD

Why did you pick the instrument that you did?
-- They ran out of school saxes.
x3
So I picked flute, since there was only one other one (who dropped after a month)

What do you think you would be doing if you didn't join the band?
-- Erm...piano.
xD
Still would be playing music.
Or drama...

What instrument, if any, would you play if you didn't pick the one you did?
-- Alto sax, trumpet, piccolo.
xD
I'm not allowed to play the piccolo. It hurts my parent's ears.

My brother was going to be a senior as I entered my freshman year. He had been big about the marching band for all of his high school years, so one day, the summer before I went to high school, he came up to me and asked me to join color guard. There were two main reasons why.

First of all, there were hardly any girls in color guard, and if it weren't for me, there would only have been four people that year instead of five.

Second of all, I never did any school-related activities. Yes, I did do dance outside of school, but I stopped in fifth grade because it was too much to handle, and the girls were mean, and the eye makeup was painful. So since I was activity-less, my mom was desperate to get me to do something (she thinks I'm fat and lazy, despite how much she denies it).

But I'm glad. So my brother said that he always was able to see me doing Guard, because of all my years of dance, and I said, "Fine, I'll give it a shot." I may have wanted to quit the second day of band camp, but here it is, my second year, and I'm loving guard more than ever.

I went to a couple of assemblies in elementary school where they try to get people to join band and orchestra. I thought that band sounded more interesting, so I decided to go for it.
