It inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob," "gang," or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats at a time, but some superfamilies have had 50 or more. Meerkats have an average life span of 12-14 years.

"Meerkat" is a loanword from Afrikaans. The name has a Dutch origin but by misidentification. Dutch meerkat refers to the "guenon", a monkey of the Cercopithecus genus. The word "meerkat" is Dutch for "lake cat", but the suricata is not in the cat family, and neither suricatas nor guenons are attracted to lakes; the word possibly started as a Dutch adaptation of a derivative of Sanskrit markaţa मर्कट = "monkey", perhaps in Africa via an Indian sailor onboard a Dutch East India Company ship. The traders of the Dutch East India Company were likely familiar with monkeys, but the Dutch settlers attached the name to the wrong animal at the Cape. The suricata is called stokstaartje = "little stick-tail" in Dutch.
According to African popular belief (mainly in the Zambian/Zimbabwean region), the meerkat is also known as the sun angel, as it protects villages from the moon devil or the werewolf which is believed to attack stray cattle or lone tribesmen.

The meerkat is a small diurnal herpestid (mongoose) weighing on average about 731 grams (1.61 pounds) for males and 720 grams (1.58 pounds) for females. Its long slender body and limbs give it a body length of 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inches) and an added tail length of 17 to 25 cm (7 to 10 inches). Its tail is not bushy like all other mongoose species, but is rather long and thin and tapers to a black or reddish colored pointed tip. The meerkat uses its tail to balance when standing upright. Its face tapers, coming to a point at the nose, which is brown. The eyes always have black patches around them, which help deflect the sun's glare. The meerkat has small black crescent-shaped ears that can close when digging to keep sand out. Like cats, meerkats have binocular vision, a large peripheral range, depth perception, and eyes on the front of their faces.
At the end of each of a meerkat's "fingers" is a non-retractable, strong, 2 cm (0.8 inches) long, curved claw used for digging underground burrows and digging for prey. Claws are also used with muscular hindlegs to help climb the occasional tree. They have four toes on each foot and long slender limbs. The coat is usually fawn-colored peppered with gray, tan, or brown with a silver tint. They have short parallel stripes across their backs, extending from the base of the tail to the shoulders. The patterns of stripes are unique to each meerkat. The underside of the meerkat has no markings but the belly has a patch which is only sparsely covered with hair and shows the black skin underneath. The meerkat uses this area to absorb heat while standing on its rear legs, usually early in the morning after cold desert nights.

Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, plants, eggs, small mammals, millipedes, centipedes and, more rarely, small birds. They are partially immune to certain venoms; they are immune to the very strong venom of the scorpions of the Kalahari Desert, unlike humans. They have no excess body fat stores, so foraging for food is a daily need.
Meerkats forage in a group with one "sentry" on guard watching for predators while the others search for food. Sentry duty is usually approximately an hour long. Baby meerkats do not start foraging for food until they are about 1 month old, and do so by following an older member of the group who acts as the pup's tutor. The meerkat standing guard makes peeping sounds when all is well. If the meerkat spots danger, it barks loudly or whistles.Will likely been condensed when I have time

 Femi's FS preview! That's only a hint at how pretty she'll become!  Tube!Femi! Still lovely. Really!  Out of her tube! ; ; And the cutest thing ever! Very shy though.  A child and still so shy! She was so quiet! Doesn't she have the sweetest smile, though?  She just keeps getting prettier! Who knew the shy little meerkat girl would be so breathtaking!  ; ; heart

Femi's first kiss! Noah South Gable enters glancing about for Femi Kaitaia Femi; *her eyes widen as she spots Gable, and she quickly drops her hand from her mouth* Gable! Noah South Gable grins and waves at Femi when she notices him and makes his way over. Hello there, you look particularly lovely tonight...of course I'm hard pressed to think of a time when you don't look particularly lovely..... He trails a smile quirking the corner of his mouth. Kaitaia Femi; *her smile was wide as he made his way over to her, she was positively beaming up at him* Oh,.I'm so glad to see you! *her cheeks flushed a bit at his compliment and she looked down at her self, self consciously* Noah South Gable returns Femi's smile fondly and gives her a warm hug in greeting. It's been too long since we last saw one another...I think we've the worst luck when it comes to being in the same place at the same time....A small frown forms on Gable's face as he ponders the troubling possibility of some sort of higher power trying to keep him away from his favorite meerkat. Then dismisses the tangent his attention refocusing on Femi any remnants of aforementioned frown evaporating. So.....how have you been? He asks brushing a stray strand of Femi's hair out of her face, smoothing it carefully down smiling as he studies her face. Kaitaia She continue to smile up at him, nuzzling against his hand. "It really seems like we do," she murmured, her eyes sad for a moment. She really did wish that she got to see more of him. When he asked how she was however, she brightened up again. "I've been well," she said with a nod. "Studying hard and taking care of my garden. How have you been?" Her eyes said words she didn't, I've missed you. Noah South Gable inwardly flinched seeing the tinge of sadness in her jewel like eyes. I really want nothing more than to make you happy.... You started your garden? Inwardly he reproached himself for not being about to have a hand in it, recalling the discussion of it during their first date. How is it doing? What sort of flowers have you planted...aside from daisies. He added with a lopsided grin recalling Femi's fondness for that particular brand of flora. Kaitaia She nodded. "Mhm!" she said, and proceeded to tell him about the different flowers she had planted. "I started it just a week or so ago, so everything is still mostly sprouts." As she spoke about her garden, her face just lit up and she became open and animated. "I'm not actually sure what I planted... I asked for a variety of seeds," she laughed. "But of course there's daisies!" She was pleased he remembered. Noah South Gable smiles enjoying seeing Femi happy. I can't wait to see it in bloom.....I've never worked in a garden before....now when I was a kid I destroyed a few of them...He recalled a distant look on his face looking mildly pleased with himself. Ahhh...one time I thought I could parachute off of Jules's roof with a plastic grocery store bag...it didn't end well for me...or her petunias...He grimaced and then shook himself out of his reverie and grinned at Femi. I promise I'll be extra careful around your flowers...He tacked on looking a bit worried hoping Femi didn't think he'd ever hurt her flowers. My flower destroying days are over, scout's honor! Kaitaia Her eyes widened a bit as he spoke of his reckless garden smashing ways. She'd always loved flowers. Gable had always been adventurous though, she remembered Jules and Quincey telling of his exploits. "Oh, I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself too badly!" she said, looking a bit worried. "And I'm also very glad to hear your flower destroying days are over." Taking his hand, she looked up at him shyly. "I'd like to have you in my garden. Its better if you won't destroy the flowers!" Noah South I promise my garden destroying days ended a long time ago. He says solemnly squeezing her hand reassuringly. And I wasn't hurt...I'm pretty resilient! He grins refusing to admit weakness especially in front of Femi. Now when I parachute, it's with a real parachute...and I've yet to land in flowers since I started doing that....I did land in a cornfield once...but that was a mistake.... all silly stories aside, I promise to treat your flowers with the utmost of care. He looks her in the eyes trying to express what he couldn't find words for, he'd never destroy anything she cared about, rather he would, without care for his own well being, protect it til his last breath. Kaitaia Parachuting? That sounded dangerous. Femi wasn't very fond of heights. She smiled up at him, reaching up to touch his cheek with her gentle fingers, her way of saying she understood what he was really trying to say. "Thank you." Thank you for coming back to me. Thank you for caring for me. Noah South Ahhh...parachuting...it's not that dangerous and I don't do it too often anymore kinda gets old after a while...after you've jumped out of one plane you've jumped out of them all. He shrugs nonchalantly catching her fingers in his hand and kissing them softly letting her know he'd always come back, no matter how far from home he ventured. Kaitaia She laughed a bit, her cheeks tinged pink from the attention the lion was giving her. "I'll have to take your word on that, I don't think I'll be jumping out of a plane any time soon." She looked up at him, that smile still on her face. "Is that what you've been doing? Off jumping out of planes?" Noah South Gable hesitates thoughtfully before responding. I would never ask you to...jump out of a plane that is. He says smiling. I...I've mostly crammed as much living into my life as possible...if that doesn't sound too stupid....I worry that if I stay still for too long my life will be over before it started and...it's hard to explain... Gable looked unsure of how to explain his need for adventure and adrenaline. Though...meeting you..being around you is more exhilarating than any of these things I've done. All of these past experiences the rush and adrenaline...they pale in comparison to how you make me feel. The lion finishes having obviously spoken from the heart. Kaitaia She listened carefully as he spoke, wanting to understand why that was important to him. If you really thought about it, they were so different. She preferred the peacefulness of her own home, where she could spend the days reading, gardening, or spending time with friends. Gable wanted to get out there, experience the world. He was different than her, but she loved that about him.
As the topic turned to her, her eyes widened a bit and her cheeks reddened all the more. However, even though she now cast her eyes downward, there was a smile on her lips. "Oh, Gable," she murmured, her voice soft. "I feel the same for you." Noah South Gable smiles fondly at Femi having admired her contented peaceful nature- seeing in her something lacking in himself. He leaned his face close to hers his nose gently brushing her cheek. You are the biggest adventure I could ever hope for. He breathed softly placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Kaitaia For a moment, she thought her heart stopped, but then it was jolted back to life, and she could swear she could hear it pounding in her ears. Very slowly, hesitantly--not because she didn't want this, no! She was simply nervous--she lifted her head to meet his kiss, a shaky hand reaching up to rest on his cheek. Noah South Gable turned his face into her palm and nuzzled it then returned his gaze to her face and smiled softly.
