Judges' results for the House Holiday Decorating Contest:

LadyHealingHands first wrote to Oralinde, whose profile is worth a visit to any and all Lord of the Rings Fans.
Oralinde became judge #1.

Next, came Starshine, a talented art judge chosen for our second judge. Starshine ended up turning in her vote first, BUT what followed was a bit of a snafu, you see Starshine was attracted to, applied to and was accepted to our Guild! Luckily I spotted her name before she was accepted and sorted. So I wrote her and proposed that she fulfill her judging agreement first so she would be unbiased, then we would sort her, which is what happened. However, when I posted that we were closing the Decorating contest so the voting could take place, Slytherin asked for more time. So I decided to nullify Starshine's vote and seek another objective judge I was decidedly lucky to have Mr. Norell, (now name changed to Simon Wells) accept.

Here is Starshine's original vote:

Quote:
Lady Healing Hands: Would you write a short statement about what you liked about your favorites?
And after you're sorted, head back to the subforums and put your wishes in the Erised thread so we can start gifting you!!

Starshine: The reason I choose Ravenclaw is that it had an excellent balance of graphics and textual content. All the information was laid out in a clear and easy to read fashion. It introduced all the relevant Ravenclaw characters with both graphic and caption. The entire room had a fun and up lifting feel, perfectly suited to the festive season icon_biggrin.gif

Hufflepuff shared many of the same good points as Ravenclaw, it was bright and cheerful, although the text might be a shade too bright as I had to highlight the text to read it (but since yellow is its house colour I can't really fault that). It also had a good mix of graphics and content.

I ended up being sorted into Ravenclaw! I guess I'll have to work hard on not being too much of an air head from now on!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next came Judge #1, Oralinde's vote: I thought Slytherin's was the best (even though was never my favorite house...)
The decorations were organized neatly and were very creative. Also, it would have taken a LONG time to find or draw all of the pictures of the characters. The description beside each character's pictures were very neat also!

Ravenclaw's common room would be 2nd on my list. I like their use of house colors, and they did a really good job of demonstrating the special features of the house, and the decorations really shows what type of people were in the House. It would have been really hard to decorate a House that was not mentioned often, and that'll take a lot of imagination. They did a very nice job of putting the pictures, drawings, and decorations together!

Simon Wells of the marvelous Friends of English Magic Guild, judge #2:

Everything about the Slytherin house entry has the feel of a polished presentation. Excellent choice of graphics and very easy and pleasing to read through. The research was well written and topics well chosen. Footnotes giving credit to sources, while not as thorough as it could have been, were nevertheless present and well done. They lost points for not to having done any digital or freehand art or writing for the event, but still remained the clear winner in my opinion.

I can't come up with a second choice. The other three were all tied for second place. Hufflepuff (the common room with member avis) and Gryffindor (The Sleigh Ride filk was wonderful!!) had excellent original art and writing, Ravenclaw had the best research and footnotes and also some wonderful digital edits and creations.

And so the winner of the Decorating Contest is

First place: Slytherin - Congratulations to Garnet17th!
Second place: Ravenclaw -Congratulations to Orna

And really, Congratulations also to SuperKoolPartyGirl and March Hare`- all 4 of you were tied for spectacular in my book--LHH

2007 Yule Volunteers List

1. Orna
2. Garnet17th
3. March_Hare`
4. turayza
5. Rakada
6. paraphernalia_101

I would like to have a representative or two from each House. Right now 3 of our volunteers are Ravenclaws, and while I love you all, I may need to do a raffle if we get more volunteers (Both turayza and paraphernalia said they'll be part time).

Here is the gist of Yule ideas proposed so far, all from the Comments and Suggestions sticky. Your thoughts and ideas on them are wanted! What sounds like most fun? Any other ideas?

SUGGESTIONS

*pokes head in*

Is this open yet?? (If it isn't I'll delete this post!!)

I'm volunteering - I know that I'll be available at minimum an hour or two a day - some days more (this is dependent on me finding a job, currently I'm pretty much available whenever, but I'm job searching right now!). Also - I definitely want to help out with the Mirror of Erised gifting. smile

I LOVE the holidays!

I'm volunteering as well. Currently, I'm a little busy, but I'm sure I'll be back and active within a week, so count me in.

Oh, I just can't wait for the Yule ball. It's going to be a blast. whee

*Jumps up and down.* Me me! I actually have a good amount of time off between this time. I love helping and I'm sorry that I couldn't help more last time. I suggest a christmas fan fic contest. Possibly a one shot fan fic.
Or maybe a secret santa? You number all who enter and we roll the dice with the correct number of side and you have to give a gift of no less than 500 gold to the person that you rolled the number of. I think those sound like some good ideas. I can probably come up with some more ideas. What do you guys think?

Can I post here?
Secret Santa sounds like a great idea! I think it would be easiest to do it within houses (otherwise there will be a lottttt of people to match) and a person from each house (or multiple) could divide up the names and make a chain of names...Only works if a lot of people participate though. What day/days would the actuall exchange occur on? Also, around holiday season people are usually a bit busier than usual...
Is something special going to happen for the Yule Ball?
Fanfiction takes a long time to write though...would there be a page limit (min/max)? I don't think you should limit it just to Christmas, would a holiday theme work?
Lol, I love the youtube vid =]
Can I volunteer?

Well that's why I would want it through all the houses that way it creates house unity and as long as there is an even number who cares? I mean I wouldn't mind being the number keeper for all who signed up we would have to have like a week long or something for people to sign up then we would have the dice rolling or random number guessing. Then you would be pm'ed with the person you are to be the secret santa for. I mean I see how it could work. Also for a one shot it wouldn't have to be very long...It could be like a couple hundred word ''one shot'' fic. Just about the holiday. I've seen quite a few like that on fan fic . net.

I can probably volunteer a few hours at a time...maybe we should have judges for the fanfiction contest? (even though, there probably is going to be some one already doing that!)

Here's the suggestion that I posted in the suggestion thread (mentioned in the second post):

Here, here! I was just discussing this with another Haven member.. I LOVE secret santas! There are two options - it can be inside the houses or Haven-wide.

What I was thinking was creating a thread in the Event subforum asking for all those interested in participating to post with their name and house [the key thing is to have a cut-off date to post with their names, that way there isn't any last minute members upset that they didn't get a match]. Have a reminder to update their wishlist - including some fairly affordable items (for those who might not be Gaia-rich).

After the cut-off date you can have a volunteer go through the names and match them. They will PM the person the name of their secret santa (making sure that everyone isn't matched up with the person who has their name), along with a reminder to keep the name of their giftee for later on. Maybe after Christmas we can have the members post in the thread who they were (or not) to let them know who their secret santa was.

It doesn't actually need to be pairs...
ie. ...errrr people A, B, C, D, E. A could be B's santa, B could be C's, C could be D's...E could be A's...etc.
This is fun =D
When is "Yule Time" ?
If the fanfic competition is going to be set up (and judged before...whatever date is set) then notice should be given pretty early so people have a chance to think of ideas and write their stories out.
Thanksgiving is in about a week. o__O Whoa that's fast...
There should be probably 2 people doing the PMing so they can participate too...
Would the art contest be just like the previous art contests?

I'd love to help if it's possible. The next two weeks I'll be insanely busy because our show opens then. I don't really know what's happening after that yet. I don't think I can be fully on the list until I know, but I'll try to find out.

I never stated that there would be pairs - it would be a random matching. You simply needed to have everyone on a list and randomly match (1 with 18, 2 with 7, 15 with 9, etc). I don't mind not participating in the secret santa - that is why I volunteered. [I'd rather make sure that others have fun than have fun myself - besides it would be fun to work on it!]

On the other hand, it would be beneficial to start getting names soon that way we can have a cut-off date that would allow people to save/purchase gifts for their matches. Within a week or two I think.. What do you think LHH and others??

Lol, you're right. This will be interesting...If there's anything I can do to help, I'd love to!
