Main Ingredient(s): Knife and a raven Original Spell: To create a nocturnal graveyard sentry, to protect important graves from plundering. What went wrong: The blade of the knife was supposed to be anointed with the blood of a human who had been dead three days. The witch who cast the spell instead used the blood from the raven, which had been dead a week.
Full Story: The night was bitterly cold, the icy wind howling through the graveyard. The cloudless sky was spangled with brilliant stars, giving the world a dull silver sheen. The inky black new moon hung in the heavens, holding dark vigil over the silent cemetary.
CRASH!
"@$!"
Well, mostly silent, anyway.
Aubrey stooped down to gather up her spell ingredients, stuffing them violently back into the cracked iron cauldron. The decaying raven gave off an awesome stink as she picked it up gingerly, placing it delicately on top of the bleached hanged man's skull, various evil-smelling herbs, the vials of blood, and the peculiarly bright knife.
Fighting off a wave of nausea as she got a faceful of the dead bird's powerful odor, the young witch lurched under the cauldrons immense weight as she made her way to the last patch of virgin earth in the graveyard. Setting the cauldron down with a muttered curse, she pulled a bit of tattered parchment out of her pocket.
"A spell of magick moste wycked," she read aloud, stumbling over the Ye Olde English pronunciations. With a shrug, Aubrey stuffed the parchment back in her pocket and prepared the magic circle. After an hour of irritated mumblings, curses, and hastily cast enchantments of protection and security, Aubrey had at last finished casting the circle and prepared the cauldron. In the middle of the circle, the herb and blood filled cauldron bubbled and frothed, sending a dark grey smoke permeating into the air.
With a deep breath and a squirm of revulsion in her stomach, Aubrey picked up the dead raven and dropped it into the cauldron, and threw in the skull quickly after it. Holding up the blood-anointed knife and reading in a stilted tone from the parchment, she recited the incantation. She paused occasionally, trying to pronounce the oddly-spelled words.
"On the nyghte of the blacke moon, By the bloode of the Carrion-Byrde, I do summone a guard frome the depths of the Earthe, to obey and protecte.
Awake, creature of bone and bloode! Come forthe from thy secret places in the grounde! Let thine spirite form thy new body, and bow to my command!"
Aubrey paused for a minute, squinting at the parchment. The instructions were brief - recite the incantation five times, throw in the knife, and run for cover, as the cauldron would explode once the guardian creature fully formed. With a long sigh, she spoke the incantation four more times boredly, tossed in the bloody knife, and bolted for cover behind a crumbling grave marker.
The cauldron smoked and bubbled, the foul potion within slowly boiling the dead bird and dried herbs. The knife floated up to the surface, its brilliant blade shining white. Aubrey crouched behind the grave marker, watching the process with bored curiosity. Covering her nose as the stink of the potion wafted towards her, she settled behind the gravestone and waited impatiently for the process to finish.
The cauldron's contents slopped over the sides, blackening the grass and turning the soil a parched yellow. The cauldron itself vibrated violently, ringing like a deep-voiced bell. The knife tossed and turned on top of the foam, its blade shining painfully bright. As the cauldron's bell-like ringing grew to its apex, suddenly the fire sputtered out and the boiling ceased. A wispy lick of smoke drifte upwards, vaguely shaped like a bird with upstretched wings.
Aubrey dared to peek out at the cauldron again, biting her lower lip. Where was the explosion? She crept towards the cauldron, wringing her hands nervously. The vaguely bird-shaped plume of smoke rose higher into the air, gray wings pointing to the sky. The fire Aubrey had lit under the cauldron was dead, the ashes cold. Muttering to herself in confusion, she gingerly brushed a fingertip against the side of the cauldron. The metal was cold. It was as though there hadn't been something blistering hot boiling within it only seconds before.
Aubrey kicked the cauldron angrily, ignoring the bell-like ring that resulted. Muttering curses and gathering her things, Aubrey gathered up the leftover materials from the spell and pitched them into the cauldron. She gave a sharp gasp as a loud shriek emanated from the cauldron, followed by noisy crying.
"That... that sounds like a baby," she said to herself in astonishment. Peering into the cauldron, she gave a scream as she saw a pale, black-haired baby waving chubby bladed arms and kicking wildly, screaming and crying inconsolably. Aubrey stared at the child in shock, her mind reeling.
"Uh-oh."

General Stuff
Full name: Lenore Ligeia Adyamaur (formerly Alecto, apparently) Nickname: Len, Songbird, Raven Date of Emergence: August 3, 2005 Status: Taken! Likes: Crow, night, stars, cemeteries, scary things, dramatic music, thunderstorms, dark colors, dinosaurs Dislikes: Bright light, cats, pink, shoes Quote: "...."
Physical Stuff
Age: Teen Gender: Female Hair: Black Skin: Ashen gray Eyes: Green Special features: Razor-sharp metal feathered wings that sprout from her arms, and a tail of feathers. She has very spindly fingers, and bird-like, digitigrade feet. Powers: She has powers over shadow and air, and uses both in a rather flippant fashion. She prefers Shadow a bit more than Air, and has grown a bit skilled manipulating shadows, insofar as to even making small 'pieces' turn solid. She has recently developed an interest in her air-related powers, and uses them to make music.
Once, and only once, when she was very young, Lenore shifted form into a bird made of nothing but shadow. She has not yet attempted to transform again since, simply because she can't remember how she managed to do it in the first place.
The Bird. Lenore is of a dark and slightly twisted mindset. She has little sense of humor in the normal sense, and delights in dark, frightening things. She is intensely curious, and asks questions constantly - which often leads to awkward social situations that require a bit of tact. She is also highly protective of her family, possessions, and personal space, and woe to he that harms any of them.
Though she doesn't understand the concept of friendship too well, she's fond of most of the people she meets and will try hard to get along with them. She's prone to giving small gifts - most often dulled razor feathers she views as a kind of token of acceptance.
She's naturally taciturn and rarely reveals her true thoughts or feelings. She does smile a bit often, but she rarely has the emotional backing behind them to make them sincere. She simply isn't happy very often - cheerful, yes, but happiness just isn't her thing. She isn't one to pick fights, and almost never raises her voice in anger. If something rubs her the wrong way for too long, though, she's apt to explode in a flurry of rather unwisely unexpressed emotion.
Currently
For Birvan's reference benefit
- Still has Sadako with her everywhere. - Abandoning colored clothing in favor of black. She wears black dresses with ragged edges and spiderweb patterns. When not in dresses, she likes t-shirts with band names and capri pants with straps. She still hates shoes and refuses to wear them. - She wears this jewelry at all times: the blood vial pendant, a black beaded bracelet, an onyx raven pendant, and a carved ivory rose pendant (reference here) -She has bright red streaks in her hair, which has been roughly cut into a new style. (to be introduced ICly soon, w/reference).

  General Stuff
Full name: Crow Ezili Adyamaur, formerly Sarah Haedermann. Birth name is Nahalethe - "forgotten". Nickname: Lethe (call her that, though, and risk painful death.) Nationality: Rijani (Ulathae) Gender: Female Birthday: February 22nd Status: Taken?! Likes: Reading, friends, theological philosphy, anything and everything World War II-related, her family, Liam Dislikes: Her parents (they don't count as family), isolation for too long, glass doors Quote: "Ah, crap."
Physical Stuff
Age: 19 Height: 5 foot, 3 inches Weight: A lady never tells. Gender: Female Hair: Used to be dark brown, now black. Skin: Fair. Eyes: Golden yellow, formerly green.
The Girl. Crow's an odd sort - she's got a sordid past that would no doubt make an excellent Lifetime movie, a soul that's been sold to eldritch talking fire, a demonically-altered body hidden by what she fondly calls "magic tattoos of doom", and has the amazing ability to walk headlong into glass sliding doors over five times in a row without even trying. She's good natured and usually pretty easy going, and has a penchant for being very random and making little sense. When her temper is riled though, she's rather dangerous - she won't hesistate to try to claw someone's eyes out if they make her mad. She's very insecure about herself "being good enough" when it comes to people she loves, and has a slightly debilitating phobia of physical relationships, be it making out or.... otherwise. That could be because she killed her last boyfriend, but one never knows. Because she is no longer physically capable of bearing children, a condition that she privately mourns over, she overcompensates by adopting animals and orphaned creatures to excess. Though she often complains about the lack of room and how they mooch off her, she adores her family and goes to great lengths to make them happy.

Julian
Full name: Julian Adyamaur, alternatively Nahalthes Pakuwo Haderka. (see why he changed it to Julian?) Nickname: Nahal, Yeh'alo Nationality: Rijani (pure bred) Gender: Male Status: Taken! Likes: Family, Rabid, horror novels Dislikes: Conversation, private parts of the past, daytime television Quote: "You're kidding, right? Right?"
Physical Stuff
Age: Mentally/physically 22, chronologically 17. Hair: Dark brown Skin: Tan Eyes: Dark blue
The Brother. Julian is a creature of impulse with a knack for speaking and acting before he thinks things through. More than once he's jumped to a wrong conclusion by reacting as he hears or sees something, but with these mistakes he's also learned to bounce back from his error and try to set things right. He's devoted to Crow and feels the need he must always look out for her, and has proven he will willingly do anything to keep her safe.
Ethan
Full name: Ethan Cebcharik-Adyamaur, alternatively Kristof Cebcharik. Nickname: N/A (prefers to go by Ethan) Nationality: Slovak Gender: Male Status: Single Likes: Food, reading, loud music Dislikes: Dwelling on the past. Quote: "Aké?"
Physical Stuff
Age: 19 Hair: Brown Skin: Fair Eyes: Brown
The Foreigner. Ethan is from an alternative reality, as he likes to put it. Before being captured and brought to Gaia against his will, Ethan was called Kristof, a college student scraping a living in Germany. He dislikes talking about his past because of the terrible homesickness it dredges up, and speaks little about himself. He refuses to speak about the time he spent in Jean Michel's gang, called the Brigade, quickly changing the subject or pretending he doesn't understand what was said. His English is carefully spoken and rather eloquent, though he is prone to tripping over words.
{image forthcoming}
Doll
Full name: Doll Nickname: N/A Nationality: N/A Gender: Physical appearance is female, technically genderless. Status: Single Likes: Crow, baby animals, playing, murder, Disney movies Dislikes: Vacuums Quote: "How lovely!"
Physical Stuff
Age: 14, mentally around 6-7. Hair: Gray Skin: Dead white Eyes: Yellow
The Toy. Doll is a funny little creature. Made by Crow to keep her company in her isolation in the Haderka household, Doll has the mentality of a child in the roughly sewn together body of a six foot tall woman. She is basically a living toy - she delights in playing pretend or dress up, and loves to laugh and joke. She's perpetually oblivious to why people seem nervous or twitchy around her, mostly due to her slighty frightening appearance.
And evidently, because of her habit of murdering people.

Lincoln
Full name: Lincoln Adyamaur Nickname: Link Nationality: Zoombini Gender: Male Status: Single Likes: Food, things involving food, cooking Dislikes: Being hungry. Talk about a one-track mind... Quote: "*burp*"
Physical Stuff
Age: Permanently teen. Hair: White/Blue Skin: White (fur) Eyes: Blue
The Surprise. Lincoln is the unofficial second child of the Adyamaur household. He's friendly to an extent but his personality can be capricious, especially if he's stuck in a group. He likes trying to impress people he finds important to build relationships with, and will shun people he deems unworthy of his time.

Others
We-Who-Watch
An amalgamation of evil Julian was forced to serve as a slave. Not much is known right now about this ancient entity, except that it has used Crow's family as its line of "avatars" for a very, very long time. It has no solid body, persay, and embodies its consciousness in the form of ice-cold white fire.
One-Who-Is-Many
?!
The Piper
A drug pusher, pimp, and all-around nasty guy who took Crow in and made her a messenger, delivery girl, and professional leg-breaker shortly after her arrival in Gaia at age eleven. He's still fond of her in a non-homicidal kind of way, but for the sake of her family, Crow tries to steer clear of anyone from her deliquent past.
Jean-Michel
The right b*****d who tried to kill Crow no less than four times, Jean Michel met quite a messy end at the hands of his former rival. His bones now serves as a weapon Lenore treasures - karma's a b***h, isn't it?
Sureiko Aballah
A royal pain in the a** to the highest degree, Sureiko's the cliche rich, spoiled brat. The fact that she considers herself above rules and has an awful habit of getting away with everything doesn't help matters. Throw one rather human-intolerant Raven girl into the mix, and things will start turning ugly fast....

The room is basically a shelter for every vagrant and stray that crosses Crow's path. There are animals, robots, and the occasional chatty skull that mooch off the girl, making ungodly noise into the wee hours of the morning and not paying rent.
Trophies from Crow's days as a professional thug and thief for the Piper are strewn from one end of the place to the other - from Coatl, an Aztec Tezcatlipoca skull that really doesn't know the meaning of tact, to an expansive collection of ivory hairpins (whose use Crow has never discerned - she thinks they're chopsticks). Seeing as Crow's a total packrat out of hard-learned habit, there's scarcely any breathing room anywhere.
Lenore's corner of the room, by the overpacked bookcases, is organized within an inch of its life. She's pilfered a fair number of things herself, and hoardes them in a box under her camp bed. Cole guards the horde jealously, and will cheerfully rip the fingers off anyone poking around where they shouldn't be.

The Country
Rijan is located on the small continent of Altheia, approximately halfway across the world from Gaia. It is a sectioned-off territory of the larger country of Fisk, bordered by that country on three sides and on one side by the Hurlaen Sea.
It has a parliament government controlled by the higher classes, known as Constructs. Common-breds hold three seats in Parliament, while the higher classes hold forty eight.
Rijan has a caste system of sorts - Constructs and Pure-Breds compose the higher classes, while foreigners, Common-Breds, and non-Constructs compose the lower. Native pure-bred Rijani non-Constructs, called Ulathae (OO-lah-THAY) are considered the lowest of the low, the Untouchables of Rijan.
Rijani Caste
Pure-Breds: Rijani people of unbroken native bloodline. A grand total of fifteen pure-bred families exist in Rijani to date - they keep their lines pure through in-breeding that has resulted in unique features in their offspring. Some features include a mental defect called Ourobat (OO-row-bat), a congenital inability to inhibit psychokinetic outbursts when provoked.
Constructs: The Constructs are a class of pre-designed humans. Their genes have been written and coded to a canon of perfection, covering both physical and mental traits. Constructs are not born naturally, but are conceived, go through gestation, and eventually are born through the use of biomechanical technology. It is taboo for the higher classes to sire children any other way but as Constructs. To use "the natural path" is believed to taint pure-bred flesh, because of the chance of birth defects and other imperfections due to naturally coded genetics.
Common-Breds: The middle class of Rijan. Common-breds are those of the native Rijani descent that have been sired in breach of taboo, and those of mixed bloodlines. They make up about half of the country's population.
Foreigners: Mostly immigrants from Fisk and Gurga, foreigners are considered common-bred offshoots. They receive the same rights and treatment, but are considered by most in the higher classes to be unclean because of their foreign, imperfect genetics.
Ulathae: This is the class Crow is a member of. These are the Forbidden, the results of the breach of taboo in the higher classes. Ulathae are pure-breds with unwritten genetic codes, non-Constructs who bear noble bloodlines. In the early years of Rijan's history, Ulathae and the parents who sired them were exiled into the strip of desert that borders Rijan, stripped of their power, wealth, and disowned by their House and family. It is considered the highest crime in Rijani gentry to be of pure bloodlines but non-Constructed. The word ulathae, meaning unclean, is tattooed on the face of Ulathae children on the first anniversary of their birth. Crow herself did not escape this cruel practice, though she refuses to say why she doesn't bear the mark of it now.
Religion
The most widely practiced religion, called Iritia (ear-ih-TEA-ah), is polytheistic. The mainly worshiped deity, called the Faerhen, is an androgynous creator figure credited with making the first Constructs.
There are numerous other minor deities that all defer to the Faerhen. Most dreaded among them is Ur, whose name means Cruelty. According to Rijani tradition, when the first Constructs "grew wild and arrogant in the power gifted them, Ur raised Her hand and struck them with a plague of the mind, to lose control of their power and cause great harm to what they sought to dominate". This, of course, is referring to Ourobat - The Punishment of Ur.
Machines also play a large role in religion. There are megolithic structures scattered around Rijan - gigantic, ancient machines half-buried in random parts of the country, made of ivory and decayed iron. No one knows who built the machines are what they were meant for, but the skeletal remains of the constructions are built vaguely like the biomechanical artificial wombs used in Construct gestation. Because of this, it is believed that the machines are what the Faerhen used to create the other gods in the pantheon; they are sacred places, revered above all others.
Notable Gods
The Faerhen - creator figure. Benevolent, gender-neutral but leans towards the female aspect.
Ur - Called 'Cruelty'. Goddess ruling over pain and punishment in her positive aspect, with her dark aspect in charge of war and violent death.
Utri - Ur's polar opposite, 'Compassion'. She is Ur's sister and her keeper, preventing her from waging war against the human populace by keeping her chained under Mount Ur'Vri, a currently inactive volcano situated on the Rijan/Fisk western border. She is a healer-god.
The Vehilii
Biomechanical transports with the ability to "jump" through dimensions to different locations in a matter of minutes, the Vehilii are among the strangest of Rijan's bizarre wildlife. Their origins are unknown, untraceable and shrouded in Iritian myth. Their evolution can take two fascinating turns- machines capable of shedding their mechanical parts and evolving into organic creatures, or living creatures that eventually become robotic, lifeless transports. They have independant wills and minds of their own, and have the ability to roughly communicate with the pilots.
Domesticated Vehilii have been bred, built, designed and altered to fit the advanced technology of Rijan. The 'ferals' of the species roam free, organic creatures that have long since evolved away from their biomechanical state.
The ability to "jump" is thought to have once been used to escape predators, a kind of teleportation away from harm. The Vehilii move in-between dimensions - ours, and the myriad pocket dimensions that open and close as phenomena called 'windows', invisible and harmless pin-point openings in reality. A Vehilii has the ability to open these windows to enormous sizes and travel through them, moving into the new dimension and forcing through a window on the other side of a set path.
Vehilii that are captive-bred come in three varieties - common, special, and luxury species. The Vehilii stolen by Crow to escape from Rijan is of the luxury breed, a black carapace male model Lenore christened Thestral.
