Shinigami (死神, death god(s); Viz "Soul Reaper(s)")
When souls with exceptional spiritual energy train their bodies, they reach the level of Shinigami, spiritual beings visible only to other spiritual beings or humans with high spiritual energy. Their trademark is a katana known as a zanpakutō, a weapon unique to each of them. They are also capable of superhuman feats depending on how strong their spiritual power is. These variant of human souls travel between the afterlife known as Soul Society and the world of the living to help souls of the newly deceased also known as 'Pluses' move on to the afterlife and protect them from Hollows, beasts that feed on these souls. They must do so to manage the number souls in both realm and maintain the balance between worlds.

The Gotei 13, presided by Central 46 council and the mysterious Soul King, is the military organization in charge of monitoring the balance of the world and the passage of Plus souls from the Human World to Soul Society. All members are Shinigamis as they are the only ones capable of producing the zanpakutō, trademark of Shinigamis. Souls are drafted from the Rukongai or the Four Noble Houses of Seireitei should their spiritual energy and spiritual pressure qualify them for military service. Unpolished gems are trained in the Shinō Academy, founded for the sole purpose of rearing aspiring Shinigami. The Gotei 13 also monitors the activity of Rukongai where normal souls reside. Rukongai is split into four sections: north, west, east and south. Each have 80 districts and surround Seireitei, the Gotei's base of operation shielded by Sekkisekki barrier.
Base: Seireitei, Soul Society Presided by: Jighthigh Race(s): Shinigami Purpose: Manage the passage of souls to maintain the balance between worlds. History:
Birth
[G1300]Founded two millenniums ago under the Royal Guard's guidance and under the orders of an entity that had called itself the Soul King, the Gotei had been nothing more than thirteen factions lead by powerful warlords that had threatened to rip Soul Society apart with perpetual war. Getting them to submit to a higher, invisible power had not been an easy task and had required more bloodshed than any of the involved parties would have liked. These warlords were given the titles of Captains, and the strongest one would be the Head Commander. They came from all corners of Soul Society, a chaotic and lawless world at the time, and each had ruled over their own dominion with an iron fist before being united under a single banner. Thirteen warlords, thirteen divisions, that had been the start of the Gotei thirteen. [G1301]Thirteen unruly men and women forced to work together for a cause imposed upon them, but to reward their efforts and tolerance, the Royal Guards gifted them with the knowledge of forging Asauchi blades, the source of the Royal Guards' strength. Many were startled when they learned that the Asauchis were empty shells of notorious beasts that ravaged Soul Society on a regular basis. 'Hollows' they were called and, though many were reticent about cooperating with what was once their natural enemies, thirst for power eventually overpowered repulsion. This move on the Royal Guards' part was to show the Gotei their gratitude and a proof that they acknowledged the warlords' contribution to the Soul King's rule as it granted the Asauchi-wielders the potential to, one day, join the Royal Guards in the realm of the Soul King. Of course, not everyone could truly unlock their potential and the Royal Guards left without any further explanation as to how a seemingly normal katana would help the warriors obtain tremendous power.
[G1302]Seven decades passed before the first warrior finally heard the name of the mysterious being in its dream claiming to be its Asauchi. Upon speaking the being's name and the incantation that accompanied it, the warrior attained unimaginable power. 'Kai' for 'release', the phenomenon had been called. For centuries, the warriors of the Gotei trained long and hard to earn the cooperation of their companion, [G1303]but another surprise awaited them five centuries after the creation of the Gotei 13: a second stage of release. It was upon the discovery of this new form that the initial 'Kai' was renamed 'Shikai' for 'Initial Release' while this new stage was named 'Bankai' for 'Final Release.' Bankai offered even greater power and, for a brief moment, the few who had mastered it thought themselves to be Gods, something that was quickly rectified by the return of the Royals Guards. The powerful servants of the Soul King had, fortunately, not reappeared in response to the Gotei 13's slight slip in behavior. They had descended for something much more worrisome.
Baptism
[G1304]Though peace had settled upon Soul Society, the same could not be said of the Soul King's realm. The Royal Guards would notice upon their return that their King had started losing interest in its task of maintaining the balance between worlds. Slowly, it would distance itself from the happenings of both the Human Realm and Soul Society and, though the Royal Guards did their best to carry on their King's duties, they were no transcendent beings. The delicate equilibrium of Souls would soon be shattered, Soul Society threatening to spill into the Human Realm. The Royal Guards had had no choice, but to appear before the Gotei once more. These warriors that they had united... it had been time to give them a bigger purpose. This time, the Royal Guards came with another gift: the knowledge needed to travel between worlds, the knowledge to open Senkaimons that connected the Human Realm with Soul Society. In exchange, the Gotei 13 would take up their King's duty; they would travel between worlds so as to reap manage the passing of Souls. Crossing to the Human Realm was not a safe thing as the Dangai, the precipice between worlds, was full of dangers. Only the highest ranking officers had the speed and strength to travel back and forth between worlds, but, fortunately, they had been numerous enough to restore the balance of both worlds. This new task assigned to them granted the warriors of the Gotei 13 a new name: the title of Shinigamis, Reapers of Souls.
Hardened Wings
[G1305]Even with a purpose and the means to accomplish it, the Gotei was still too young to properly function autonomously. Though they were great warriors and rulers, warlords turned captains oftentimes neglected their people and were at lost as to what to do during times of peace. One of the Royal Guards decided to stay in Soul Society to oversee their activities. This individual would be the founder of Central 46, a group of politicians and diplomats handpicked for their administrative skills and worldly experiences and for many years, they ran the Gotei well enough for their founder to retire and vanish. If the Gotei was the brawn, Central 46 would be the brains.
Taking Flight
[G1306]In the late VII century, a young captain, one that was part of the second generation of captains, would discover Jigokuchōs and their ability to cross through the Dangai unperturbed and unharmed despite their frail body. No one knew where they had come from, but it was a welcomed godsend as the little critters allowed even the slowest of Shinigamis to use the Senkaimon safely. Shinigamis would become much more active in the realm of the living, learning and adapting new discoveries they would stumble upon. It would mark an age of discovery and scientific development for the Shinigamis. [G1307]A century later, a colleague would discover Kido. [G1308]By then, the majority of the original captains had retired after helping build a peaceful and prosperous world. [G1310]It took another century before Kaido was born at the hands of a promising lieutenant that had been both skilled in the art of Kido and extremely knowledgeable of a Soul's anatomy. [G1309]Rukongai had also been divided into a multitude of districts by then, but it had only developed as far as the thirtieth districts. [G1311] Confident and and increasingly daring, the Shinigami experimented more and more until, by accident, a new world would be discovered: Hueco Mundo.
A Brave New World
[G1312]The twelfth division was pleased beyond belief: they had finally located the home of their natural enemies, the Hollows. The Shinigamis could finally get their hands on even more samples to dissect and study, perhaps even wipe out the nest! But they had not stumbled into any normal nest, it was a hornet's nest. Underneath the endless sea of white sands lay the Menos Grandes. Gillians, Adjuchas, Vasto Lorde, all were a threat to even Bankai wielders, but the Shinigamis were bold, persisting in their efforts to annihilate their enemies. It was one crusade they were not willing to give up on, that is, until their presence became unwanted by all, even the most reclusive inhabitants of Hueco Mundo. This would be the Shinigami's first encounter with the race known as Arrancars. Imperfect as they may have been at the time by today's standards, they were powerful enough to discourage all further attempts to explore the land of Hollows and spark interest in Hollowfication. [G1313]The twelfth division was given the task to build a weapon capable of rivaling the Arrancars they had encountered in Hueco Mundo, but the project was extremely short-lived and cost lives of numerous of the Gotei's high-ranking officers. The project would eventually be swiped under the rug, all materials destroyed and all witness either dead or incarcerated. Or so Central 46 had thought.
First Blood
[G1314]Centuries went by, second-generation captains making way for their successors as old age, decease or combat bested them, but peace never lasted and another major event struck the Shinigamis. [G1315]The balance of the worlds had been threatened again, but not for a lack of diligence when it came to purging Hollows and performing Konso. It was the living, the Quincies, more precisely. Fear the might of Sharkeisha. They were spiritually aware humans that would destroy souls instead of purifying them with their spiritual powers. They needed to be stopped, but weren't they doing the same thing as Shinigamis? Or even acting out of self-defense? This sparked dissension among the Shinigami ranks. One side argued that the Quincy, humans that could even pose a threat to Shinigamis in terms of spiritual power, should be annihilated while others argued that the Shinigamis and Quincies were intelligent and civilized beings capable of finding a peaceful solution to all this.
[G1316]Negotiations resulted in a complete failure, however, and, in the 1380's, the Shinigamis could only carry out their plan to exterminate all the Quincies so as to remove this unexpected threat to the balance of the worlds. Simply killing their mortal bodies weren't enough, it was actually the easy part because it simply freed them from their physical bodies. The Quincies souls would move on to Soul Society where they would need to be hunted and killed without mercy as soon as possible due to the Reishi density of the spirit realms. The Shinigami caught on to it a bit too late, and the Quincies got the upper-hand, having had the time to regroup, but the Gotei countered with the use of forbidden Kido spells that could completely incinerate the souls of a living being, essentially doing to the Quincies what the Quincies had been doing to the Hollows.
[G1317]It was a grim war known to the Shinigamis as the Great Purge or the Hundred Years Killing to surviving Quincies. It was a war that cost the lives of many captains, but in the end, the Shinigamis were victorious. Centuries would pass before the events would finally be buried away in a restricted corner of the archives, forgotten by all but those that had been directly involved in it. It was a dark blotch in the history of a gathering of warriors that had been tasked with the duty of protecting souls and one that many were eager to forget.
Convalescence
[G1318]The large amount of Shinigami casualties forced them to start actively scouting for recruits. The Shino Academy was founded at that time at the end of the XV century by a seated officer who would later on become a captain. It served to recruit and train volunteers while the officers scouted Rukongai for seasoned warriors so as to replace the Shinigamis that had fallen in battle. Years went on in relative peace, with nothing more than occasional spikes in Hollow activities in the Human Realm, but the Hollows had learned their lesson and fled the sight of humanoids in black robes. This gave the Gotei time to rebuild itself after its costly war and rethink their policies.
Ghosts of the Past
[G1319]In the XVIII century, anomalies in the traffic of souls from the Human Realm to Soul Societies was brought to the Head Commander and Central 46. [G1319] In an effort to better manage Souls, the Gotei converted the wildlands of Soul Society into Rukongai, expanding the territories under their protection up until the 80th district. Even then, however, it wasn't enough; souls still went missing. [G1320]An investigation led to a startling sighting in the late XIX century: Quincies much to the dismay of the few surviving third-generation captains. This brought back the old moral debate as to what to do with the Quincies. Should the Shinigamis pursue with their initial plan and double their efforts to annihilate the Quincies or should they learn to tolerate the Quincy's presence, keeping their heads down and working harder to maintain the balance of the worlds they had been assigned to protect? Protocol sent the Gotei into a war frenzy, hunting the humans down once more to erase their miraculous existence, but the Quincies had learned from the past and were much more organized this time around. They had had the time to regroup and build themselves into a considerable force while hiding in the shadows. Try as they may, the Gotei could not locate their headquarter let alone kill them all.
To make matters worse, Hollows have become emboldened, even going as far as attacking lone Shinigamis in groups. It forced the Gotei's attention off of the Quincies, if only temporarily, in favor or protecting their own people and re-establishing their dominance over the greedy beasts. The Quincies had not made any offensive move so they would be pushed back on the list of priorities the Gotei had to deal with. Whether or not it is a wise choice, only time will tell.
Hierarchy: Just below the Central 46 Council is the Head Commander that is in charge of Division 1. Twelve other captains are tasked with governing the twelve other divisions of the Gotei 13 and each are to report to the Head Commander. The Onmitsukidō and the Kidō Corps, two organizations that had been created independently of the Gotei 13 have been absorbed into two separate divisions of the Gotei 13.
Each captain work with a lieutenant to run their division that consists of a large number of unseated Shinigami and twenty seated officers, themselves included.
The Gotei 13 may also be influenced by the 4 major noble families of Seireitei. Though not all of them are Shinigami, they possess much political and financial influence.
Four gatekeepers also exist. They each guard one of Seireitei's gates to prevent intruders from crossing the Sekkisekki barrier. They each possess immense natural strength that could put them on par with lieutenants as it is a requirement to be able to lift the four gates without the help of any Reiatsu due to the Reiryoku sapping property of the gates and barrier.

-Amatoki Family by Feiyimei
Emblem: [Pic] History: The Amatokis rose to power when the Gotei 13 was still young and inexperienced. Travels between Soul Society and the World of the Living were extremely dangerous due to the Dangai's natural defenses. Only the best and fastest Shinigami would make it out of a Senkaimon alive and the Gotei would lose large amount of resources and soldiers in their struggle to oversee the passing of souls. It was by pure luck that the head of the Amatokis took notice of strange butterflies fluttering around Senkaimons and areas where Senkaimons had been setup even days after it had been closed. The woman, an officer of the twelfth division at the time, captured a handful and took on the task to observe them in her spare time. Thus, the Jigokuchu's ability to travel through worlds, unperturbed by the Dangai was discovered. This was such a large contribution to the Gotei that her family was granted the status of a Noble family. She would soon retire to give birth to twins, but even then, she could not bear to be separated from the small critters. She had become infatuated by them after spending so much time with them and stole a few to keep in her estate, a crime at the time due to how rare Jigokuchus had been. She cared little, however, neglecting her family to secretly study these Godsends. Her instincts told her that there was more to them than what they had discovered so far and, true enough, she found out they could transmit messages and had enough intelligence to be trained to obey the will of spiritual beings. This new discovery acquitted her of all charges pressed against her for the theft of the precious creatures. It was then that she offered to breed and train Hell Butterflies for the Gotei 13. She would hatch their eggs, raise their larvae and train them to understand and obey the words of spiritual creatures and recognize spiritual signatures and, only then, she will hand them over to the Gotei 13. The Shinigami did not oppose to it as she had been the authority in that field, even surpassing the twelfth division at the time. However, as an act of good faith or as a form of insurance, for each generation, at least one child of the Amatoki's main branch must join the Gotei 13, effectively binding the fate of the family to the Gotei 13.
Current State of Affair: They are still managing the Gotei 13's Hell Butterflies, but have managed to create a new breed out of them and developed a form of Kido that could control the critters, all of which are unknown to the Gotei 13. Half of the members of the family were part of the Gotei in some form or another, but the majority of them are from minor branches or distant relatives of the Amatokis. The main house had lost interest in all Shinigami affairs a long time ago, completely forgetting the importance of overseeing the passage of souls across realms. To them, Soul Society was their world and the realm of the living was nothing more than an annoyance, a burden that they were glad to rid themselves of by dumping the responsibility in the hands of the Gotei 13 and Central 46. All members of the main family still received Shinigami training, but few actually make use of it. Needless to say that more than one feather were ruffled when their heir enlisted into the Gotei 13, a task that was usually given to the cadet. Their animosity towards the Gotei 13 is at its breaking point, however, ever since Amatoki Nagisa's, their heir's, apparent death. Active Characters:
Nagisa Amatoki (Feiyimei) - Deceased heir that is living as a human in Karakura. Nagato Amatoki (NPC) - Current head of the Amatoki family. Paternal grandfather of Nagisa Amatoki. Has a stick up his butt and is ruthless when angered. Mostly a diplomat and, though boasting an impressive Reiatsu level, has little to no combat experience. Yuki Amatoki (NPC) - Wife of Nagato. Born in a minor noble family. Appears to be a gentle old woman, but is actually a scheming minx that isn't afraid of using underhand tactics to get what she wants. She had been an officer of the fourth and twelfth division once upon a time and is extremely skilled in Kido. Aiki Amatoki (NPC) - Born in a lesser branch. Attendant of the clan head. A middle-aged zanjutsu master that had served time as a Shinigami. More to come depending on the course of the mini event I'm planning.
Duties: Rearing of Jigokuchos for the Gotei 13 Influence: Very influential among the older Shinigamis and Central 46 members, but they are mainly riding on their family's past glory. They do not possess much military strength even if most of them are qualified to be a lower seated officer in terms of fighting capabilities. They are extremely wealthy, however, and have monopolized all Jigokuchos. Specialty:
Albino Jigokuchu: They are a special breed that only the Amatokis or close friends of the family possess. They are rare and cannibalistic, willing to eat anything with an ounce of Reiryoku. They are larger than normal Jigokuchus, around twice their size, and are known to be very aggressive, but are sturdier and stronger. Though they have no jaws like all other butterflies and moths, their tube-like tongue (proboscis) are extremely sharp and sturdy and they are known to inject flesh melting poison into their targets so that they may suck out the melted flesh through their tongue. It is not lethal to large individuals unless injected in fatal area, but it is very painful. They still possess the same abilities as the normal Jigokuchu, but their size and strength makes them harder to eliminate and usable as distraction in skirmishes. Apart from that, they are a symbol of status because not all from the Amatoki family may possess one for their personal use. They are reserved to the main house and those who have proven their worth. It is a great honor to be gifted such a creature, but they are known to be quite hard to tame due to their moodiness and voracious appetite so they can also be seen as a curse. Amatoki Kido These are spells used to manipulate Jigokuchus and known only by Nagisa's family. They are kept secret and are not meant to be shown in public because it would imply that the Gotei did not have as much control on the critters as they believed they did
-Shōkan Cast by igniting the tip of one's finger with a violet ember of Reiatsu and saying the name of the spell. This sends out a silent signal to all Jigokus within a mile radius. It will summon them and subjugate them to the caster's will. This cannot be traced and one of the main reasons the spells must be kept a secret because it implies that the Amatokis may intercept messages, erase them or modify them without leaving any traces behind. -Kokoronome Cast by touching one's forehead with a Jigokuchu with one's eyes closed and saying the spell's name. This allows the caster to see through the eyes of a Hell Butterfly, but they cannot move while doing so else the connection will be severed. While in this state, the caster will not be able to see, hear, smell or sense another presence and may only be forcefully jolted out of this state by a physical touch. -More to come in the future.

Minor Clans
Fallen Clans
The Yukimori Family by Ubiquitouch
Emblem: The insignia of the 11th Division is derived from the Yukimori clan emblem - a common yarrow. History: The Yukimori's are believed to have been the first Shinigami, guarding Soul Society against Hollows even before the creation of the Gotei 13. The Yukimori's have always been members of the 11th Division, preferring straight-forward melee combat above all other fighting styles. Unfortunately, 400 years ago, the entire Yukimori clan, save Shizuko, the youngest daughter, were slaughtered in a ploy for power. Current State of Affair: Deceased. Active Character:Shizuko Yukimori Duties: The Yukimori clan was the core of the 11th Division. As such, their duties were very similar to those of the 11th Division - they were the melee vanguard of the Gotei 13. Influence: While the Yukimori's were very highly respected, they stayed out of politics, believing that such matters were below warriors. They lived and died to fight, nothing less. Specialty: The Yukimori's were well known for their berserker-style combat, disregarding any injuries to themselves, only focusing on damaging their enemies.
House Of The Raven by Lady Apple White
Emblem:Link History: The clan was once a noble and powerful family as they had reached such a status due to their age and history within the Soul Society along with their cut throat and dark nature that landed them with such power. Almost like a family of assassins but on a much tamer side. One could never prove the clans involvement with certain affairs when special people started to show up 'dead' or 'missing' but it never vanished as a possibility simply due to their nature. The Clan often being watched and under some sort of supervision. Current State of Affair: Fallen - Deceased. Active Character:Astria Leos Duties: The Raven Clan worked along side with the Second Division as many members in the past have either been apart of this Division or the Eleventh. Their own duties very similar to the Division they worked along side with, being track. Doing so in whatever means needed. Influence: None - The clan only having one member left living. Specialty: Melee Combat: Swordsmanship.

Gikon are souls, designed by Shinigami scientists, which separate a Shinigami's spirit from a Gigai, should they be inhabiting one, or evict stubborn spirits from their corpses if necessary. The core theory behind Gikon is to inject foreign Reiatsu into one's body, and for the individual to turn that power into their own. Artificial souls are used by ingesting a Gikongan (義魂丸, Artificial Soul Pill). The pill forces the soul out of the body and allows the artificial soul to take control of it, operating in a pre-programmed manner until removed by the Shinigami. They can be used on a body which has no soul, such as a corpse, or even an inanimate object, such as a stuffed animal. These artificial souls possess their own personalities, which can be specially designed to fit one's specifications
Gigai(義骸, Faux Body)
Gigais are artificial bodies which are used for a variety of reasons by Shinigami within the World of the Living. When the Gigai is hosted by a Shinigami, it assumes the appearance of its host, who can now be seen by normal Humans they happen to be around while residing in the Gigai. The Gigai does not take on the clothes its Shinigami host is wearing, and thus, they must acquire modern clothes in order to blend in with the Humans. Souls can leave Gigais by a variety of methods, but the fastest appears to be using a Gikongan to replace the soul within, allowing it to freely leave the Gigai; in the case of a Shinigami, this is done so they may fight at their full strength while ordering the replacement soul to keep the Gigai out of harm's way.It seems leaving the Gigai without this method can be troublesome for a Shinigami.
Reiatsu Concealing Gigai This Gigai was developed a long time ago and is capable of completely erasing the presence of Shinigami, making it particularly useful for rogues. Production of these Gigai has been banned by Gotei 13 for this very reason.
Inflatable Gigai This Gigai is to be used as a decoy in battle. It starts as nothing more than a small, black marble, but can be turned into a good imitation of a living being should one inflate it. Like all Gigais, it must be created and modified beforehand to take on the appearance of an existing individual.
Jigokuchō(地獄蝶, Hell Butterfly)
Jigokuchō are black butterflies used by Shinigami to serve a variety of purposes. The bodies and wings of Jigokuchō are completely black, except for a small outline of maroon on their lower wings. They guide the Shinigami through the Senkaimon when traveling between Soul Society and the Human World, thereby saving them from the inconvenience of passing through the Dangai. Jigokuchō are also used as messengers among Shinigami, often carrying important orders. Hell Butterflies are taken care of by Shinigami in Seireitei, this task usually being carried out by new and inexperienced members of the Gotei 13. Jigokuchō, like the Shinigami themselves, are only visible to spiritually aware beings. Currently, the Jigokucho are being bread by the Amatoki Family.
