They are connected to a character's soul, their essence, giving each of them unique abilities and usually directly influencing the Reiatsu level of its wielder. In general, for the sake of standardizing at least some system in WCHB, they have two release stages. A description of what each race have as spirit weapon and the information needed to strengthen those weapons.

Shinigami who are still in training - those who do not yet belong to any of the Gotei 13 - and Shinigami who are unable to communicate with their Zanpakutō all wield generic Zanpakutō. "Shallow hit" refers to the grossly reduced power of a Zanpakutō whose wielder cannot connect with it properly. This way of thinking is partly inaccurate.
Asauchi are actually the ultimate Zanpakutō, for they have the potential to become anything. All who are training to join the Gotei 13 are loaned one of these nameless Zanpakutō, and this same blade is officially given to them upon joining a division. All Shinigami must spend every waking moment with their own Asauchi, and as they progress in their training, their Shinigami powers will slowly and methodically imprint the essence of their soul into their Asauchi. This is how they guide and mold their own unique Zanpakutō.
As an Asauchi, the resident spirit takes on a Hollow-like appearance while the blade itself forged by melding a multitude of Shinigami souls together. The knowledge behind the creation of Asauchi was given to the Gotei 13 by the Royal Guards as a parting gift to better help them accomplish their task in the Soul King's stead. Due to the potential of each Asauchi, this secret is strictly guarded and only passed on to a select few each generation. These individuals are also closely monitored to ensure that these dangerous weapons won't fall in the wrong hands. It also oftentimes bring up moral and ethical issues so all authorities see it in their best interest to keep the secret a secret.
All unseated Shinigami start with an Asauchi.
Zanpakutō (斬魄刀, Soul-Cutter Sword; Viz "Soul Slayer")
The preferred Shinigami weapon, its shape is typically similar to a Japanese katana, but may take on a wide variety of shapes and form, each unique to their wielder. A Zanpakutō is oftentimes known as the physical manifestation of a Shinigami's powers concentrated into a blade. One may only tap into the weapon's true powers by learning its release incantation and the weapon's name after communicating with their zanpakuto spirit in their inner world. Shikai, the ability is called, but it is only a preliminary for Bankai, the final release where a Shinigami truly becomes one with their weapon. Upon releasing Shikai and Bankai, the zanpakuto usually changes shape and form without changing the physical composition or body of its wielder. A zanpakuto that changes the clothing of its wielder is not unheard.
A broken zanpakuto, let it be a Shinigami or an Arrancar's zanpakuto, can heal over time through the owner's willpower and Reiryoku so long as it was only broken in its sealed state without any damage done to the resident spirit. Otherwise, the twelfth division's help would be needed, but they may only do so if the hilt is intact and it was not broken in Bankai or Segunda Etapa form. Should that not be the case, a Bankai or Segunda Etapa form will never be fully restored unless with the intervention of someone capable of forging Asauchis. Currently, the only individual capable of doing so is the Kenpachi of Gotei 13, Mukade.

Arrancar Zanpakuto differ greatly from Shinigami Zanpakuto. In fact, it can be said that only their sealed form is comparable to a Shinigami's Zanpakuto. An Arrancar's Zanpakuto is created when they lose their Hollow mask and successfully evolves into an Arrancar. Their Hollow, beastly form is sealed in the form of a zanpakuto. In a way, it could be said that by turning into an Arrancar, a Hollow gained incredible power while losing the ability to remain in their original form in permanence. Instead, their original form, at least one similar to their original form, will only manifest itself when they go full out, entering what is called Resurrección
While Resurrección can be used instinctively by Arrancars, Segunda Etapa, a form even stronger than Resurrección, isn't and may only be achieved once an Arrancar has been pushed past their limit. This can be said to be the true apex of Hollow Evolution.

Traditionally, the weapon takes the shape of a bow, but more 'modern' Quincies are known to use firearms instead of bows. Whatever the shape the weapon takes, its mastered form cannot change easily as it reflects the type of weapon the wielder is most comfortable and proficient with.
Unlike the spirit weapons of all other races, Quincy Cross do not grant any special abilities and may only be efficiently used with Bukijutsu while being powered by Taijutsu.

This affinity can be defined by one’s love for the object in question, or simply by an overall fondness of it. As such, this power is usually awakened through a strong emotion associated with the object, such as pride. Using this affinity, Fullbringers pull out the object’s soul and boost it with their own, transforming it in the process. While Fullbringers typically have an affinity with one such object, it is possible to have many, but the Fullbringer will no longer have the ability to steal powers from others and will be reduced to [1] ability per object. Obtaining more object will work the same way as stealing more powers from NPCs.
Once a Fullbringer has fully realized this power, its abilities cannot and do not change through growth. However, Fullbringers must progress to a certain level before they can use their unique abilities to their fullest. As such, a Fullbring's various developmental stages can look radically different from its final form, and most of them can thus be considered “incomplete.” When the Fullbring's potential is fully realized and it progresses to its final form, it releases a violent burst of energy that can potentially damage its user’s body. Because of this, another Fullbringer is typically required to oversee the process, and to prevent the recently completed Fullbring from injuring its user by suppressing the explosion. In addition, a Fullbringer's growth can be promoted by exposure to the atmosphere of Hueco Mundo, as a result of its Hollow nature.
A Fullbringer's unique power largely depends on the object that is used as a focus. In addition to souls, material objects also possess memories. As its holder experiences various events, the object experiences them as well; the memories are engraved onto its soul each time it is touched. Because of this, Fullbringers who had a considerable amount of battle experience prior to awakening their power have stronger Fullbrings.
