This weyr is shared with Z’ven and green Tiarenth
The weyr is small, but meticulously clean, and one side in particular is perfectly in order. A comfortable sleeping couch with a thin soft looking blanket plus pillow is neatly made, two wooden chests presumably for clothes and possessions are closed and well polished. The riding gear has the soft sheen of well cared for leather, and hangs dead straight on its peg. There is a small writing desk, again well polished, with a straight-backed wooden chair before it; no papers are visible. Less regimented are the comfortable day couch and pair of wicker chairs set to look out over the Weyrbowl. Though they are not untidy, they give what could otherwise be a somewhat austere place a welcoming, friendly feel. Close to the mouth of the weyr there is a large stone couch, currently unoccupied, for one of the resident dragons.
The other side, however, is a great deal less rigid and tidy. The bed is covered with an assortment of blankets and rugs, mostly unfinished, but it's obvious that the bed isn't slept in. Near it hangs a hammock with several blankets and pillows carelessly tossed in; obviously the rider prefers to sleep here. Next to the unoccupied bed is a long wooden box, filled with clothes and other items. A shelf cut into the rock nearby houses a variety of items, namely two or three large jugs of oil and the same number of wine bottles. Near the front of the weyr is a dragon's bed cut into the rock and covered with fine sand, with two or three empty buckets next to it. How everything is organized on this side gives the impression that the inhabitant is too busy with other things to spend as much time organizing and cleaning as his roommate, but at least attempts to keep his half of the weyr tidy.

R'than Name: R’than Age: 49 Sex: male Orientation: hetrosexual
Physical Description Height: 6'1" Build: Lean, well trained Skin: Tanned, somewhat lined with age Hair: Grey, short, straight Eyes: Brownish hazel Manner of dress: Always smart but practical and comfortable Detailed description: Tall and tanned, wide-shouldered and well toned for his years; R’than looks the perfect image of a dragonrider. Alright, perhaps his face is kind rather than handsome, there are lines on his face, and admittedly his hair is already fully grey rather than deep brown or gleaming gold, but it would still be hard to mistake him for anything other than what he is; a dragonman. He walks with confidence, holds himself tall and straight with all the pride that befits a rider. He smiles too, however, and all height and upright bearing aside he looks approachable, trustworthy, reliable, and unshakable as stone.
Personality Likes: Intelligent conversation, flying, people with standards, intelligent women. Dislikes: Laziness, drunkenness, rudeness, too much change. Strengths: Intelligent, friendly and approachable, bold, logical, cool-headed, quick thinker in a crisis. Weaknesses: Uncomfortable with big changes and very gay men, overprotective of his wing, unbending, fear of deep water, stiff finger and knee joints. Key words: Calm, competent, dignified, level-headed, kind, unbending, restrained, loyal, protective.
Detailed personality: R’than is very much the charming but kind older gentleman. He can relate an amusing anecdote, or listen to one told by another with rapt attention. He is an experienced, savvy man, and is happy to share his wisdom with anyone who wants a bit of advice. He also has a habit of offering advice where it might not be wanted, but luckily he has enough sense to realize when his input isn’t going down well and back off. He is unflappable no matter what the situation, and seems to think faster under pressure than he does in day to day life. He has never been and will never be a sharp wit; even if he was capable of thinking up clever comments on the spot, his restrained nature would keep him from uttering them.
He is very protective of the other members of his wing, and will have hard words with anyone who treats a rider or a dragon badly. If he has to go and shout at a bronze for pushing around a dragon on his wing, have no doubt that he will do it without hesitation. He’ll have a go at the rider of the bronze too if he needs too, no matter what the man’s position might be. As well as being willing to go and shout on their behalf, he is more than happy to listen to any problems other riders in his wing have. If he can do anything to help them solve the problem he will, if not he will offer sympathy and hugs as required.
R’than is extremely hard working, and expects everyone in his wing to be the same. If they fail to meet his standards he will gravely tell them that he is very disappointed in them, and then work with them to get whatever it is that they have neglected done as quickly as possible. Though he believes it ought to be them picking up their own slack, the good name of his wing is very important to him, and he will do whatever he must to preserve it, even if that means helping some idiot tidy up his or her disgracefully untidy weyr.
He is far from an ‘all work no play’ kind of person, but will never join in with rowdy behavior, and doesn’t like to play dice or cards if heavy betting is involved. If he finds a member of his wing - or anyone at all actually - who is rather too drunk for their own good (in his opinion), he will give them a firm talking to about standards and attempt to steer them up to their weyr to sleep it off. Having a bit of fun is one thing, he says, but debauchery is quite another; as riders it is their duty to conduct themselves with honor and restraint at all times. His disapproval of people drinking more than a couple of goblets of wine at once has earned him a reputation as a bit of a bore among many riders, but R’than would rather be thought of as a bore than as a wild party animal in any case.
Though he does not engage in many of the stereotypical vices of riders, R’than cannot deny an eye for the ladies. He prefers female riders to other women, but any woman he goes to bed with must be able to share intelligent conversation with him; he has no interest in pretty young things with no grace or culture. Despite his many years at Ista Weyr, R’than is still somewhat unnerved by excessively foppish or feminine men. It isn’t that he believes that homosexuality is wrong, he just feels slightly uncomfortable around gay men who makes a big show of their preferences. He can overcome his unease if he gets to know an individual well, but given his discomfort around extremely gay men it is probable that he will only mange it for members of his wing.

Garith Physical Description Length: 32'8" Height: 9'2" to the shoulder Build: Muscular Detailed description: Garith may be leaving his prime, but he is still a powerfully built dragon. He is an average-sized brown, but often seems quite large as he always holds himself in an upright, dignified manner. Anger, frustration, and even hunger seldom change the colour of his eyes; he always gives the impression that he is completely in control of himself, and of his situation. All this said however it is clear that he is not a young dragon; faint hints of grey an be seen around his muzzle, and his neckridges have a distinctly weathered appearance. A careful observer might even notice a slight stiffness to his movements on cold mornings, though he usually moves slowly at the start of a day to hide what he sees as a weakness in himself.
Personality Likes: Intelligent conversation, flying, sunning, swimming, people with standards. Dislikes: Breaches of etiquette and tradition Strengths: Intelligent, powerful, good stamina, excellent memory for a dragon. Weaknesses: Uncomfortable with big changes, not a very agile flier, slow to catch on with jokes. Key words: Dignified, reserved, polite, kind, unbending, loyal, reliable, grave
Detailed personality: Garith is an older dragon, and possesses a good deal of wisdom as a consequence. He has always been a gentle and patient creature, more of a gentleman than a dragon. Distinguished is a good word to describe him, and it is very important to this brown that every action he makes is done with honor. Those who treat him politely will be treated warmly, and those that are rude, well... Garith will be civil, no matter what. It is impossible to rouse his temper or ruffle him--everything is taken with a grain of salt. Grave has sometimes been used to describe him as well, for as easy-going as he is, Garith doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor.
When it comes to rules and regulations, Garith will follow them without question or doubt. He often reminds the others to do the same if they are acting out of line, though he never means to come off as arrogant or condescending. He is loyal, through and through, to both his Weyr and his rider. The big brown is very intelligent; he takes it upon himself to valiantly try to remember every name offered to him, and can actually remember most of his wing by their riders' names.
Garith chooses to chase only after greens during Flights, believing that to be his proper place. It is the bronze dragons that will fly the queen--not browns! Perhaps he's a bit old-fashioned with his thinking, but this brown will never be anything less than rock-solid and steady.

History and Writing R’than, born Resenthan, had an uneventful childhood along with his elder brother and two younger sisters in a tiny cothold on the west coast of Ista. When he was twelve, a searchrider arrived and picked out Resenthan and another youth to come to the Weyr. His parents was less than thrilled with the idea of him leaving, especially to go to a Weyr of all places! They did not believe that the Thread would ever return, and hated the idea of their son being exposed to the reputedly lewd behavior of dragonmen. Nevertheless, no matter how much they resented the tradition of giving up sons and daughters to the Weyr, they saw it as their duty to let him go. Resenthan and the other boy, named Voeni, left for Ista Weyr before sundown.
Resenthan was shocked by the lifestyle he found there: the open acceptance of homosexuality, the casual nature of relationships and so on were utterly alien to him. He did his best to adapt, but spent the first turn and a half feeling like a fish out of water. Eventually he settled into Weyr life and more or less got used to all of its ideals, though the men who giggled and made much of liking other men still made him edgy, and for some turns he did his best to avoid such people all together. When not busy with chores, he spent time finding out all he could about being a dragonman from mature riders, and fixed several ideals of what one should be in his mind.
Resenthan stood for many hatchings, but did not Impress until he was nearly seventeen turns old. When he finally did meet his lifemate, Garith, they made a pact with one another to always behave as they believed a rider and dragon ought to. Since that day, both have worked tirelessly to keep up their promise; honor, dignity, patience, discipline, and loyalty to one another, their wing, and their Weyr. The only thing that will stop this pair from living up to their own and one another’s standards is the cold void of death itself.

R'than's desk Updates June 15th 2009: Entered wing contest for FS dragon brown Garith. June 21st 2009: Winners announced, received Garith's cert, weyr set up. July 16th 2009: Wing officially named Hurricane Wing. August 23rd 2009: Applied to move to 'Favan's' Weyr. August 30th 2009: New Weyr location revealed to be Igen! September 11th 2009: New rank confirmed as wingrider.
R'than's updates
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ Today, a new wing is to be formed. I am to be the wingsecond, and Lyveana of green Ruinnth is our wingleader. Below is a list of all the riders on this wing, and the locations of their weyrs.
Green Ruinnth, LT Lyveana (WL) Brown Garith, LT R’than (WS) Bronze Niyath, LT T’loa Bronze Sigranth, LT A’dan Blue Cavaruth, LT A’ras Blue Cresth, LT Mella Blue Erevuth, LT N’ron Blue Iawanth, LT P’ree Green Briaranth, LT R’lus Green Futarith, LT V’eema Green Hallianth, LT I’ver Green Tiaranth, LT Z’ven
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ I'm moving on. A strange thought, but I believe it is for the best. Ista has plenty of competent riders, too many in fact; the new Weyr, Favan's Weyr, might not. It seems I'm going to be just about the only really experienced rider going with her. Ista has been my home, our home, for a long time, but it is time for Garith and myself to move on. I will not deny that the situation with my wing wasn't a factor in my final decision, but even if it were not an issue I think I would have chosen to leave. Wherever our duty takes us, Garith and I will go. It is worth noting however that two other members of Hurricane wing have also opted to leave. With Z'ven it might be coincidence, but I know well why A'ras has made this decision. I might not like his attitude, but I certainly can't blame the man.
I look forward to this move with anticipation, and it has to be said a little trepidation. The sooner I know more the happier I will be.

Acquaintances Humans
Lyveanna Agh. she's an awful leader, and shouldn't have been given the post to begin with. I don't like her in the least, but for now I have no choice but to obey and support her. Indeed. We do what we must, no matter how unpleasant.
A'ras Brash, rude, foolish. He has the right ideas, bu he goes about them all wrong. He is a foolish young man, I doubt he will do any good with his rantings.
Z'ven Sane, hardworking, pretty good company. He's messy, but that's the worst I have to say about him; a good man, a good friend even. He is pleasant to live with, even if he is untidy. I am glad he is one our wing.
Weiwin Nice lass, always good to meet someone who lets you talk. Honestly I was half asleep, I got little impression of her.
A'dan Laid back, thank goodness, we need some sanity on the wing. Yes, he seems like a good man to me, I like him.
Uuni Very interesting young woman. Maybe a bit irreverent, but that's almost refreshing; at least she's honest. She seems good at relaxing you, and so I like her.ArolonNice lad, very enthusiastic and optimistic. If he ever finds his dragon, he'll be a worthy rider. Yes, I liked him. he was respectful, but not afraid. He would do well by a dragonet.

Today, we were made wingseconds. I was proud of Garith and myself, and excited until I found out who is going to be leading us. Not a bronze I think incapable, not a brown whose morals I question; a green. A green. A green. No matter how many times I think it, it makes no sense, seems unreal. This has to be a joke, I cannot believe anyone would actually make a greenrider a wingleader. How she proposes to carry out her duties I am sure I have no idea. I must support her though, no matter how much I hate this. She was made wingleader, and I have to live with that. As her wingsecond, I will have to quell any unrest among the rest of the wing, will have to tell people to ignore the very concerns I myself feel.
I almost turned the position down once I found out, but I was given this task and I will see it through no matter what my personal feelings. Lyvenana is my wingleader. A greenrider is my wingleader. It cannot be real. As if we didn't have enough problems with the crowding and the unrest of some Holders... Yes, crowding. Soon enough, we will no longer be able to cope with the numbers here, a new Weyr will be created. I love Ista, but if I get the chance to leave this wing and help establish a new Weyr I will do it. I am sure I would be of more use that way in any case; all Weyrs need experienced riders, but few experienced riders will be willing to leave a Weyr they have served for so many turns... Of course I suppose my wing might decide to move to a new Weyr as well. If that happens then... then... I don't know.
I hate this more than I can express, it feels as wrong as calling a watch-wher a dragon. I have to do it. I have been assigned to this wing, and I will do whatever I must to see that it is a good one, a respected one, a reliable one. No matter who is named our leader, I will not allow us to fail. Whatever must be done I will do. I do not see that I have any choice in the matter.

It was supposed to be my wing. Not a good decision, it should have been a bronze with experience as a wingsecond, but K'em chose me, and Lyveana as wingsecond. Again, a bad choice, but better than making her wingleader. K'em passed his recommendations to Helirra and D'tai. One of them changed our names around. I went to see D'tai, and he said it was none of my business why he had chosen to put a green rider in a position she is clearly incapable of fulfilling. The fact of the matter is, one Ista's space problems are solved wings would need to fly an entire Threadfall again. Hurricane Wing, as we are to be known, won't be able to do that. Lyveana will drop out a third of the way through, and then what? I am to be both leader and second? I can't believe a man of D'tai's experience could be so foolish.
Unpleasantly, that leads me to conclude that she - Lyveana - either bribed or blackmailed him into giving he the post. What other explanation is there? It makes my skin crawl, wondering what she did. Thinking of how D'tai reacted to me isn't too comforting either. No right? I have no right to wonder why he is putting the lives of twelve good riders at risk? I have no right to wonder if he's lost his mind? This place... it's changing, and I can't do anything about it, can't change with it either. All I can do is follow Lyveana, support her however I can until an honorable chance to leave comes along. If it turns out that I can best do my duty by backing her up for the rest of my days... so be it. No matter what happens around us, Garith and I do our duty.

Today, two dragons died. More accurately, one died and one was never even born. Let me go back a time, to when a pretty young candidate too big for her britches touched Cheoth's eggs. Before the Touching. While they were soft. Why she was suffered to remain after that display I have no idea. After today, surely she must be sent away.
The hatching was one of the most violent and tragic I have ever seen. Candidates were maimed left right and center, and just when it seemed everything was returning to normal, that blue hatched. His egg was so large everyone was sure he had to be brown or bronze, but he was not. He was not even sane. I don't think I've ever heard a dragonet scream like that. It almost put me in mind of that horrible cry a dragon gives just before it betweens on the death of its rider. That thought could have been a premonition. It seemed as though the blue was trying to take off, to fly away, but he couldn't and then... then he was gone.
I have seen a couple of hatchlings go between before, but this time was more horrible than ever. We know why the poor creature couldn't find His. That girl's violation of his soft egg damaged him. Maybe she's to blame for that little egg that never even moved too; eggs that don't hatch are more common, but still tragic. Garith is devastated, every dragons is. I might not think too much of Favan and Cheoth, but I feel for them. To have such a tragedy occur to your clutch at all must be heartrending, but for it to happen to your first? Maybe in time Cheoth will forget, but Favan will not. I will not. Nobody who was there will. That girl, that despicable girl. She must be punished.

Igen. Not one of the Weyrs I've visited before, but it's as impressive as any. I think Garith and I shall be happy here. He'll miss swimming of course, but I think all that hot stand to scrub his skin in might make up for it. Not like we can't go and find water when he fancies a splash about in any case. I haven't found my weyr yet, or been told what my duties and wing will be but I expect that will be sorted out in short order. Chances are there won't be a wing hanging around without a second, so I shall probably return to being a wingrider but that doesn't matter to us. So long as we are useful and doing our duty, we shall be happy. So long as our wingleader doesn't turn out to be a green.
At the minute we're going back and forward collecting our things, mostly my things that is, from Ista. I wonder if I shall have a Weyr to myself. I think I might actually miss living with Z'ven if so. He might be messy, but he's a good man and over the last few months I feel we've really become friends. It would be nice to have a space that is just Garith's and mine again in some ways, but in others it wouldn't. Always having company around is rather nice, someone to talk to... Not that Garith and I don't talk, but it's good to have a human to talk to about human things too. Still, I shan't concern myself with what might be while there is still work to be done; there are crafters and candidates to take to Igen as well as my belongings, and some of the crafters have quite a lot of their own possessions. At least the candidates only have a bag or two each, all this betweening is getting tiring, and the sooner it's all done the better. Garith will need a good oiling after this, and I have a feeling I'll need a glass or two of wine!

Igen is not what we expected. We don't regret coming though, I'm gladder than ever I made this choice. They have very strange ideas, odd ways of doing things. I understand bronzes as wingleaders, that makes perfect sense, but I don't see why they should get all the positions of power. If another rider would make a better weyrlingmaster, put him or her in the position. Except it would never be a woman here. There are so few, and those that there are seem... seem almost to be outcasts. It is most peculiar indeed.
Then there's the candidate gangs. There are three main ones, and it seems if you're not part of one, you're a nobody, as much of an outcast as they make their female blue riders. That's really why I'm glad we came; somebody needs to keep an eye on the transferred candidates. Though I'm a bit of an outsider myself I can still look out for them until they find their places here. I feel sorry for the female candidates who came, it looks like unless there's a gold egg on the sands they won't be too welcome at hatchings. There's a lot of potential that will be wasted if they're kept away from greens and blues.
Maybe Favan will change things; it's early days yet, I don't even have my wing assignment. It's possible she will start a revolution, get rid of this strange set up, the prejudice against females on fighting dragons, but I don't hold out too much hope there. She'll be working to secure her position first, and then she'll probably decide to use this system to put the people she likes at the top. I wonder if she will favour those of us who came with her from Ista, or if she will seek out new allies among the current power bases. Time will tell I suppose, but no matter what she does, I'm going to do what I can for the candidates.

We've received our wing assignments; wingriders. It's a step down I suppose but not one I really mind. I was competent, I quite enjoyed the responsibility and I'll admit the extra marks are nice but in the end I'll go wherever I'm most useful. We don't know the way around here yet, it would have been foolish to drop us straight into a position of authority. All things considered, how ranks are given out here, we'll probably not be made seconds again. It's something to work towards though, even if the system is against us. For now though it's a good thing in the end; more free time gives me more time to watch out for the transferred candidates, and crafters and riders to a lesser degree.
It's the candidates I worry most about though; such a huge change for them, and then having to become part of a gang on top of it. No doubt friendships will be split up by this necessity. I must admit, the system makes no more sense now I've been here a few days than it did when I first arrived. Why divide people like that? It can't make for a stronger Weyr, surely. I suppose it at least encourages people to strive to better themselves, if only to get one over on other factions, other bronzerider families. It looks like I'm going to have to ally myself with a family soon, I'm trying to find out as much as I can about them so I can make a good choice. I couldn't stand to support dishonorable men.
