Hot. He ought to be used to Ista's heatwaves by now but they had never been comfortable to him and never would be. Still, he saw very few people running around full of energy when it got this bad; probably tolerance of it was inborn in only a select few. He wished he'd been one of those lucky sorts. Sighing slightly, R'than stepped out of the shade of the Weyr and into the bowl. Up on the ledge of their weyr, he could feel Garith alseep. Well that wasn't helpful. He gave the brown's mind a nudge; he didn't know where he planned to head next, but it would require his lifemate's presence... Just back up to the weyr? Down to the beach? Humm.
As he came to a halt, still pondering what to do until it was time for drills, he spotted a young man looking up. Instinctively, he turned his head to see what might be so interesting. Overhead there were dragons, most sunning on ledges, one or two soaring. As yet Garith was not one of those in the air, so he moved closer to the tough looking teen for something to do... He didn't look especially happy.
Some paces away, R'than cleared his throat softly so as not to surprise the youth. "You alright there?" he asked with a slight smile. "It's a little hot to be standing out in the sun for long, isn't it?" Perhaps this lad was one of those enviable sorts who was mostly unaffected by heat... Still, something was bothering the young man; he was awfully tense.

Sweat rolled slowly down his jaw to suspend itself dangerously for a beat or two before it rolled down his thick throat and disappeared into the folds of his clothing. Impulse commanded he drop his gaze, but he clamped down and fought with the urge, ignoring the way his fists trembled lightly. The soft sound was all it took to shatter his concentration, and Goran jerked away from the source as though it had been a blow. He managed to quickly regain steady feet, turning with half a mind to clobber whoever had snuck up on him.
...Course, he hadn't been expecting a dragonrider to be the one questioning his well being. His jaw slackened slightly before he ruefully straightened himself up, silent, but as respectful as he knew how to be. Confusion threatened to give way to wariness; he didn't think a dragonrider would bother trifling with someone who wasn't among their ranks, much less a Candidate.
"Didn't notice it much." He eventually said, the words slow. "Was lookin' up," A rough jerk at his head towards the ledges, "...fer the height." Probably wouldn't make much sense to the other, but Goran decided that'd be all right. He didn't feel like explaining his own weaknesses.

...Well, this lad seemed like a bit of an odd one. Respectful though, that couldn't be denied even though he was rather stoic. "Wish I could avoid noticing it," R'than said with a soft chuckle and a shake of his head, "never did cope well with extreme heat. Better than extreme cold though I suppose... I'm R'than by the way, of brown Garith. Might I ask your name?" Was he another candidate? It seemed likely enough to R'than; most of the teens around the Weyr were, and there were far too many of them for him to keep track these days. There had been a time when he had made the effort to know all of their names, but over the last few turns that had become impossible... Was Garith actually coming? He gave the brown another mental nudge, and this time he was rewarded by a sleepy mental query; what did he want?
"A lift old brown, not sure where too yet but it will involve flying. No great hurry to get down here though, I've found somebody to talk to in the meantime."
Garith responded with a feeling of assent, and R'than felt him yawn and begin to rouse himself from sun-soaked sleep.

He wasn't too sure what to say about that, shifted long and large arms awkwardly as though debating folding them across his chest. Eventually, they were left to themselves, fingers twitching occasionally with slight unease. Extreme cold... Like Between? But the man soon confirmed his status, and Goran tipped his head respectfully for the brownrider, eyes fixed on his toes for a moment.
"Goran. A Candidate, here..." And one that finally felt like he knew what he was doing here. That was why he was putting himself through this and looking like a fool, not daring to risk rejection because the creatures could sense his fear. He debated with himself for a moment more, not one to ask questions, but figured the worst that could happen would be the rider would dismiss him as a shallow-brained wherry.
"...D'the dragons just... pick who they want?" He ventured slowly, lifting his gaze to fix it on the older man once more. He'd obviously been with His for quite some time, and that was the only reason Goran didn't feel like a sharding wherry for asking. It was easier to respect someone older instead a rider his age--or worse, even younger.

R'than nodded confirmation. "Yes, they do. We don't know how they decide really, but it all seems to be down to compatible personalities. Similar, complimentary, some similar traits and some different; any of those, even personalities that can sometimes frustrate one another." He wished he did know how it worked, just out of curiosity really. "All the dragons ever say," he went on with a shrug, "is something like 'I chose you because you are Mine'. Some have slightly more concrete reasons, such as saying a candidate's strength or gentleness attracted them but they don't explain more than that... I suppose there's no more to be said." Why look for complex reasons when there were simple ones? Dragons chose the rider that was right for them, no more, no less.
"Ah," R'than looked up, shielding his eyes from the sun with one hand, "here comes Garith." Indeed, a large dark shape was circling down towards them in an unhurried manner. The brown landed a short way away from his rider and the candidate so as not to buffet them with the wind of his landing. Once he had folded his wings by his sides, his padded over and bowed his head slowly to Goran, rumbling deep in his chest as he did so.
"He says he is glad to meet you," R'than passed on, "and he wishes you good fortune at the upcoming hatching." He could feel his lifemate striving to commit the young man's name to memory; he always did try hard, and for a dragon he had fairly good success, being able to recall part of the names of many people he - R'than - regularly spoke to. He was getting close to perfect at remembering the riders on their wing, too, and the old rider couldn't help being proud of his dragon for that.

Though his features remained hard, Goran was listening slowly and carefully to what R'than had to say, taking in that knowledge. He wasn't sure how it could help him, but it made him feel a little more secure--at least like maybe he could predict what to expect. That was laughable too, but he shrugged that notion off when the man spoke of the dragons themselves speaking of why they made their choices. "Mm." He grunted, rubbing at the back of his neck. Guess that made sense... He wasn't particularly sure if he wanted to know why a dragon had picked him, especially when many people had made it known that they thought there was plenty wrong with him.
That was about the time the rider announced his dragon was coming. His jaw instinctively went slack at the dark, enormous shape dropping down towards them both. The landing was graceful, and the beast moved to approach them, surprising the man with a bow. Awkwardly, his spine curved in turn towards the dragon, short, but genuine.
"T...Thank you." He stuttered gruffly with surprise. He'd heard of dragon intelligence, of course, but it was different to experience it firsthand. He took a small step back, stiff, but doing his best to be polite. "...Didn't mean to slow you down." It was clear they were going somewhere, and though he fully intended to let them go, his eyes remained locked on Garith with an awed expression that was more fitting for another boy in his shoes--the shoes of a Candidate.

R'than frowned thoughtfully. "Yes, we were going somewhere... I hadn't quite decided where yet though." He'd been feeling oddly listless lately, not really tired as such, but he couldn't seem to want to do anything. He blamed the bad food, the crowds, and that blasted woman Lyveana, it was all wearing him down, sucking the life out of him.
"I can decide for us if you wish," Garith said with a soft rumble, "given that we are not otherwise gainfully occupied we could offer this candidate a brief fly. He did seem to be looking up quite intently, perhaps that was because he wished to be up there... Though he did look tense."
R'than shrugged internally, there was only one way to find out what the boy wanted. "I'm not doing anything important right now," he said after a few moments, "would you care to take a brief fly with myself and Garith?" Most candidates would jump at the chance, he knew he had when he'd been in that position and it seemed only fair to him that he do for candidates today what had been done for him by riders with a bit of spare time and a friendly disposition do long ago.

He wasn't sure what to say to that, and decided that silence was the best answer for now. Had he forgotten? But the dragon unexpectedly rumbled, and drew his attention back to his magnificent form again. Shards, he could hardly believe the size and power of the creature, but he reflexively swallowed when he glanced all the way up to where the rider would sit.
Then the question hit him like a ton of bricks.
"F-Fly?" He barely choked out a whisper, swallowed to try and wet his suddenly-dry throat and felt his hands go clammy. Fly... He needed to learn how, to handle that fear eventually, but it was enough that his knees were threatening to shake. "...I'll... I'll go." He managed to force himself to say, lips feeling rather wooden. Faranth, he knew he couldn't say no, but could he even get up on Garith's back without losing his nerve?

...Ahhh, that explained the tension. He was afraid either of heights, or flying itself, or maybe even dragons. What a position for a candidate to be in. R'than gave Goran and reassuring smile, and stepped up to straddle Garith's neck as the brown dipped his shoulder and extended a foreleg. Once he had secured himself to the flying harness, he looked down at the jittery young man and gave hims another smile.
"Right, take hold of my hand and I'll help you up behind me," R'than said, holding his hand down to Goran. "Once you're up I'll fasten the straps for you and we'll take a little turn around the bowl. Garith's not given to doing anything flashy, but I'll warn you if he does decide to turn sharply or anything." He very much doubted the brown would, there would be no call to try any stunts, but he felt he ought to give the assurance anyway.
"It must be difficult to be afraid of something you want," Garith said soberly to his rider. "I hope we can help him at least a little; fear in the back of his mind might make the hatching that is perfect for him look past and choose another."

The smile made his insides shrivel some, forcing the big man to drop his eyes with shame. He was about to shame himself, and there was nothing he could do. How else could he overcome this if he didn't face it head on? He tried to watch how the other easily mounted the brown, and slightly trembling fingers reached up when the rider said it was okay to do so.
He was surprised he managed to haul himself up with R'than's help, the sound of his own shallow breathing almost deafening. He missed the last bit of the other's instructions, thick muscles twitching all over as he did his best to not shake like a leaf. The ground seemed miles away now, and his hands splayed themselves clumsily across Garith as though the dragon would help steady his quivering nerves. Not even the warm, surprisingly soft hide could help him now, however.
Quelling the nausea that was quickly beginning to roil in his stomach, Goran sat very stiffly and simply tried to focus on getting enough air into his lungs. He'd squeezed his eyes shut without realizing it, the dizzying height almost too much to handle. And they weren't even off the sharding ground yet.

R'than buckled the young man into the harness carefully, wondering if this was such a good idea after all... Well it wasn't a nice idea but he still felt it would help Goran in the end. Hoped it would anyway. "Hold on to me," the grey-haired rider suggested after a moment, "it'll be easier for you to feel which way we're heading by how I move." Hopefully having something to hang onto would be some vague reassurance too. "An easy take off please Garith, I know you will but I thought I'd ask anyway."
"Of course," the large brown affirmed, "you need to be sure of thing that matter; I shall make it as smooth as I can."
Good; that was all he could ask, and all he could do. "We're going to take off now," R'than said as he patted his lifemate's neck in gratitude. "Won't be anything too sudden, a few paces along the ground, and then we'll rise slowly, alright?" He couldn't imagine being afraid of heights, it must be a terrible feeling, really terrible; he knew how much he hated murky deep water but he could avoid that without issue. Goran was not so lucky; if he was to become a rider, he would have to face his fear and overcome it. No fun at all.
((Feel free to describe Garith taking off ^^))

There were several obliging shifts to better help the dragonrider do what he needed to so he wouldn't fall off... and oh Shards, just the thought was enough to make his throat close off. His eyes flicked up to the other's face at the suggestion, clearly loathe to grasp at the other man... but he didn't think he could handle this with his arms hanging loosely. So, awkwardly, he gripped at R'than's back and tried to make sense of the other's words, sucking in a deep breath and jerking his head stiffly in what was supposed to be a nod.
Then every single muscle in the dragon tensed, an almost rocking motion as Garith must have stepped forward, and a leap that almost had him bite through his own tongue. His stomach felt like it'd been left back on the ground, and he daringly shot a glance over the side of the dragon to stare with horror at the shrinking ground below them.
It was probably lucky that the dragonrider had to wear such thick leather to protect against Between--Goran was gripping so tightly that his fingers had gone white. He wasn't dying though, wasn't plummeting or falling, and he chanted that silently through his thoughts even as he desperately wished for it to end. Each flap of Garith's wings sent them bobbing a little, and he could only hope the broad back of the beast wouldn't suddenly dive out from under him.

Garith gave a deep, quiet rumble which he hoped would reassure the boy on his back. It would be best not to climb too high, he decided collectively with R'than, half way up the bowl would be quite high enough for today. One they reached said height, the brown began to circle slowly above the weyrbowl. It was good to be up in the air, but he was less happy about the unhappy person on his back; it was never pleasant to be frightening someone, even when you were doing it to try and help them.
R'than agreed with that, and wished he could somehow reassure Goran that he was safe; it was hard to persuade somebody who was really truly frightened that they were alright. "Garith can fly for candlemarks on end like this," he said eventually, "we're not a flashy pair, but we can keep going, and unlike some riders and dragons who love to pull stunts we're sure of getting to wherever we're going safely." That seemed like a pretty reassuring thing to say, though it might put Goran off riding with anyone who was prone to sudden loops and dives. Still, no doubt if he ever did Impress he would trust his own lifemate and take to the skies in the end, it might just take him a bit longer than other weyrlings, unless of course he got some practice now, and said practice actually helped. Sometimes no amount of exposure to a fear made it less intense. He hoped it wouldn't be like that for Goran.

It would take several moments before the death grip on R'than would loosen just a little. All he could do was try to focus on how things had evened out, how there was a pattern to the subtle rise and fall that matched up with Garith's great wings. Of course, his stomach lurched whenever he peered down at the bowl, and soon found himself shuddering while he tried to keep his breathing more even.
"Not--you--I don't--trust." He managed thickly, fingers gripping a bit more firmly at the mere thought of loops and dives and what-have you. But also, he didn't want R'than and Garith to feel bad about this, not when he was trying to figure out how he could make himself...stop feeling this badly. It was irrational fear, and Goran finally had to screw his eyes shut once more to keep his wits about him.
