Turning to R'than as the meeting came to a close, Lyveana offered him a wan smile and motioned with a smooth motion of her hand for him to seat himself near her at the table she had been sitting at before the wing had arrived. After A'ras had left, most of the others had drifted away, but Lyveana wouldn't have minded all that much of others chose to remain nearby to listen in. "R'than, it is good to meet you in person, would you care to have a seat with me so we can discuss some things?"

His silent support after the bluerider's display of temper had helped with the sudden dropping of her stomach, as had the staunch support of the other riders. If nothing else, she could count on most of the men and women she had met today on trying their damnedest because that was just the kind of riders they were. Good group, overall! But she had to know where R'than stood. She hadn't missed the expressions that did manage to cross his grave features, but she couldn't draw concrete conclusions from them either.

R'than inclined his head slightly in agreement and sat down on the bench. All in all he supposed the meeting could have gone worse. That blue rider was going to be trouble, but whatever their reasons might be, it seemed the others were going to do as they were told. A green wingleader. His wingleader. He owed her his absoloute, unquestioning support, and he would give it. To a green wingleader. Was this some kind of sick joke? If only. This was for real. This was actaully for real, and he had to make the best of it.

"What would you like to discuss, Lyveanna?" he asked after a moment keeping his voice respectful but, he hoped, not too tense. He had to make this work, failing was not an option. Maybe if he was really lucky there wouldbe a reshuffle of wings soon, and he would be assigned elsewhere. A decent bronze rider to support, that was all he wanted. They didn't have to be the most stellar leader ever just not this woman who rode a green, and had begun her acquaintance with her new wing with a shocking display of inconsistency.

As Lyveana was still operating under the general impression that R'than was taking this, mostly, in stride, had she known how chaotic and outraged his thoughts were, she would have waited for him to settle down before speaking to him. His reputation among the Weyrfolk was a good one, and labeled him as an honest, hard-working rider with the dignified air of class A experience. She had no reason to suspect that he had taken such a bigoted dislike of her solely because she rode a green.

He was giving nothing away with his expression either, and while he did seem a bit tense, it was nothing that couldn't be chalked up to the weight of new responsibility or meeting new people. Faranth knew she was nervous! So when Lyveana did speak again, it was with the tone of someone speaking too an experienced rider, not a Wingleader asking her Wingsecond's opinion. No matter what foolish notions the brownrider had cooked up in his head, she was not the type of woman who steamrolled over her comrades. She would always do what she had to do, just as she had already said to the Wing. If it meant insulting or consoling them, she was more then ready to do it, but she would not abuse them for her own selfish gains.

"The basics. You have been in a Wing before, as have I. We both know what the leadership must do in order to maintain order within a fighting unit and I would like to discuss what our plan will be." She said, sitting down across from him. "I hope to avoid mistakes due to miscommunication, and to let you know that above all else, I value honesty. If for any reason you, personally, think what I am doing is wrong... I need to know whether you'll feel comfortable enough to tell me." The last was hard to say, though not because she had any stupid attachment to power. Lyveana would be the first to admit that she had an ego, and she had just set herself up as a walking target for criticism by accepting this position. Criticism was a hard pill for anyone to swallow, but Lyv would do her best to take as much of the political burden as she could, hopefully freeing her Wing from the windfall. To do so, however, she needed to know that R'than would be upfront and honest with her, since she valued his experience as a long time dragonrider. If he had no complaints about her abilities, she could deal with the rest.

"My former Wingleader was a good man, and I hope I can emulate him in many ways. He would have never allowed a display of temper like that bluerider, but then again, I doubt he would have taken a green being chosen as a Wingleader in stride either. " Her smile was rueful, but not regretful. A'ras, despite his foul tongue, had aired valid points and she had had to address them. "He also had an open ledge policy with his Wingseconds, wherein they could come to him at any time with questions or concerns. That policy is one I wish to have with you as well."

For some moments R'than was quiet, pondering the woman's words. "Yes," he said eventually, finding a small smile from somewhere, "I shall be sure to tell you if I think you're doing something foolish. My job is to support you, and telling you when I think you're about to make a massive mistake is part of that... I think we may sturggle with A'ras in the long term too. He think's he's too good to obey your orders, and he's just waiting for a chance to show you up, possibly even to get the wing disbanded if he can. His dragon of course doesn't help; famed for his low opinion of females that one, thinks they're all incompetant and need him to come to the rescue."

She valued honesty, eh? He wasn't sure how much of that he was able to give. On professional matters of course he wouldn't hold his opinions back but... Her knowing how he felt about her appointment would do no good. Why her? Why any untried rider? Why not a wingsecond who had been waiting for a promotion, deserving one. Throwing any rider in as a wingleader just like that was daft. To throw in a green rider... He just couldn't get his head around it. The world was changing, but he wasn't. That was just life though, he supposed, it never did stand still, and sometimes the ways it moved and shifted weren't ways you liked.

"Personally I'd ask for him, A'ras, to be removed right away if I could," R'than sighed after a moment, shaking his head. "All he's going to do is act up, and try to spread dissent. At least everyone else seemed willing to behave. The only one I know personally is Z'ven, moved into my weyr about half a turn ago; he at least I know is a good one, very hard working." Would he have been happier with Z'ven as a wingleader?... No, it wasn't that Lyveanna was female, it was the green thing. It just... it didn't work like that, it never had. He wished he knew why she had been put above so many worthy bronze riders, knowing might make the whole affair easier to swallow.

Somehow, Lyveana was not surprised by R'than's outline of A'ras and his blue dragon's vices. That rider struck her as the type who wouldn't know what to do in a really tough situation the moment his tongue failed him, even if someone were holding a sign pointing out the escape route. Still, she disagreed about getting rid of him as soon as possible. She was fond of the adage, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. In the Wing, she could at least monitor his actions, and the optimist in her hoped that given time, he might come around to a tolerable working relationship. The man was a dragonrider after all!

"Perhaps I am naive for thinking that this thing with A'ras will eventually work itself out one way or the other. But I strongly feel that if I made a move to silence him by removing him from the wing, that would only serve to spread dissent among the riders who are at least willing to give this a go." She replied, speaking aloud her thoughts once R'than had said he would be honest with her. "Of course, I will not tolerate any more if his disrespect. He is welcome to air his troubles with me in a civilized manner, but I think you and I can rest assured that the Leadership will not listen to the words of one disgruntled bluerider." Well, she hoped so anyway. There were still some things she was herself uneasy about. The bad blood between the Senior and Junior Weyrwomen was well known, and while Lyveana knew she had Helirra supporting her, she wasn't entirely sure how long such protection would last. "And Ruinnth is more then capable of handling Cavaruth." She added, her confidence in her green obvious and without a trace of worry.

"Two mornings from now I am going to call everyone together again for a simple V formation drill. It should give us a better chance to assess our riders abilities so we can place them better within the different formations. I'll have some hidework due to D'tai soon about where we will best be suited in the Flight as well." She paused, half turning to reach behind her back where a scroll tube was tucked into her belt. Retrieving the thin writing hide that had been rolled up within, she stretched it out between herself and R'than, setting some empty mugs at the corners to keep it in place. "The few training grounds available to the Weyr are being used for Weyrling training and for three other Wings who had their bid in long before ours was even formed. So here on this map are a few likely spots where either I personally know the Holders, or someone in the Weyr does. These two here," And she stopped to indicate one bluff located about three miles north-west of the Weyr and had the name 'Bianne' scribbled in tiny script next to it, and another flat area due south-south-west with no name. "were places another Wingleader told me about that may be used for practice if we bespeak the Holders. Are you familiar with either?"

Depressingly she was right. Throwing A'ras out was the last thing they ought to do, the man would have wonderful fun trying to sully the name of the wing, and people would be all too quick to notice who the wing with the green leader couldn't handle one self-satisfied idiot. Still, he'd be happier with the man in another wing, another Weyr! He didn't fancy having to count on that one to work as part of the wing during Threadfall. He'd probably think he had a better idea and ruin a whole formation, possibly getting decent riders hurt or killed.

"Yes," he sighed, "we're stuck with him. I hope he comes around but I don't expect it. Maybe once he realizes nobody else is throwing a tantrum, he'll stop it." It was worth hoping for, it would be good to have the whole win behind them. They would need that support; while everyone save A'ras within the wing seemed willing to tolerate Lyveanna, he was certain that people out the outside would be waiting with bated breath for them to make a mistake so they could laugh and denounce them all. He would not allow that to happen. He would not be made laughing stock, and he wouldn't let that happen to the rest of the wing either.

As Lyveanna spread out the scroll, R'than frowned thoughtfully and peered at it. The light in the dininghall was none to good, making it difficult to make out the details but the outlines were obvious at least. As Lyveanna described the features he nodded. "Yes, I've drilled over both in the past, more often at the bluff. Nothing to complain about there, the other spot is decent as well from what I recall but it's been turns since I drilled there last." It was easier to deal with her whilst talking wing business, much easier, easier to think of her as 'wingleader' rather than 'green wingleader'. At least she had a brain in her head, that was something to be glad of.

"Nothing to complain about is a good sign." Lyveana replied, attempting at some light humor for a moment before subsiding back regarding the charts intently. "I'll fly over both with Ruinnth early tomorrow and check the currents, but with such a simple formation I'm not going to be terribly picky about it, just so long as we won't encounter any gust-ups of wild air." In the back of her mind she heard Ruinnth rumble something about having a place to land as well.

"Ah yes, another limiting factor. Having adequate open space for twelve dragons to land knocks out most of the places I know..." She added after the pause to confer with Ruinnth. Truly, she'd have to make sure she could secure one of the few conference rooms for subsequent pre-flight meetings. Having to narrow her options based on landing space was a terrible way to start things off, but unavoidable at the moment.

"Do you remember if that bluff could host twelve? It looks like it could from this map, but I'd sooner trust your eyes then the mapmaker." She offered, glancing up at R'than with a slight softening of her expression.

R'than rubbed his chin thoughtfully, peering down at the map as if to focus his memory of the place. "Yes," he said eventually with a nod, "that shouldn't be a problem at all. My last wing drilled there when there weren't other options available to us; it was a tight squeeze, but we managed and we were twenty strong. The twelve of us would have plenty of room for take off and landing." Presumably soon enough their wing would grow in size to match the others, but for the time being the bluff would be comfortable for them where it was cramped for most other wings. All in all, a pretty good choice.

Nodding as he spoke, her eyes fastened back on the map, pondering a moment before she released a gusty sigh. "Aye it'll do for now. Thank you for your input R'than, I really do appreciate your help." She said, sitting up to regard him critically for a moment. "I'll draft up the orders and submit them to D'tai, you can expect them in your hands sometime tomorrow. The rest of the wing will receive them in a similar fashion, and I will make sure Ruinnth verifies with their dragons that everyone knows what is going on." She paused only to stand, deciding abruptly that she wanted to eat by herself this evening.

"Until then, I hope you enjoy your dinner, and give my best to Garith." She added, rolling the map back up.

R'than nodded and rose to his feet again before saluting his wingleader. "Thank you, I'll be sure to read over them as soon as I receive them. I hope the rest of your evening is enjoyable, my regards to Ruinnth."

With a final nod to the green rider - green rider! - R'than turned and made his way slowly to the serving hatch, lost in thought. His wingleader. How was this ever going to work? At first, while endurance didn't matter thanks to their overcrowding he suppose from a practical standpoint it wasn't too great an issue. It would be another matter entirely once those issues were resolved. He accepted a bowl of stew reflexively and mumbled vague thanks, hardly noticing that the food was of better quality than usual tonight. All he could think about was the future. It did not look especially bright.

"Oh Garith. What are we going to do?"
