A Father's Concern

Orpheus
I am starting to wonder what is going on in the head of my oldest son, hes spending more time with only Vorel and that time isn't being spent around D-Corp or around his friends. He seems to leave early in the day and come home late at night, I have no idea where hes been going and given Baroness and Ter have no way of following since the wyvern can't fly they aren't of help in figuring it out. I am getting worried...

Orpheus looked down at the paper before him before he closed the notebook, stuffing it into the desk and rose to his feet. He was the father here, he couldn't just sit around and worry. He had to figure it out, where his son was going and stop him from doing whatever foolishness he was up too. Despite the fact that Ligeia looked all cute and innocent when it came down to it he was still a teenager. Teens were nothing but trouble because of all the things going on with their bodies and minds at such an age... HE couldn't let such things drive his son to do something stupid!

He rose to his feet, he would figure it out today. Where his son was going and what it was that he was up too.

A Difficult Letter

Ligeia was sitting in his room, quiet as he starred at a piece of paper that would change a lot for him... well in a technical sense at least. This felt as if it were something that were a long time in coming, after all when was the last time he'd seen the newt? He found himself glancing out his bedroom window. It was warm now, the sun was up, and it stayed light pretty late into the night... the last time he'd seen Chath there was still cold in the air from Winter. So much had happened after they parted ways, he'd thrown himself head long into relearning flying, getting through the pain in his wings because it had been so long since he'd flown, the ache as he relearned the skill and now he seemed to fly more then ever after having to experience what it was like to have the sky taken away from him.

In a similar fashion he'd then thrown himself into his magic and that had been worse, he couldn't recall how many nights he'd collapsed short of the hammock he slept on and ended up sleeping on the floor with Vorel because he'd exhausted himself completely. What he wanted though he was slowly, painfully beginning to be able to do. To be able to control his magic once more and keep it from reacting as violently as it had been when he tried to channel it. It had been as if his power were growing a rate faster then he'd been able to keep up with. His fault to spacing off his training, running around and doing all sorts of playing he thought to himself as he chewed on the end of his pen. He had been able to play all his wanted when he was younger but he was a teenager now, should learn to be more responsible, to work on important things like maintaining his skills and not slacking off.

He popped the cap off the pen, chewing on it as he started to write. It was hard, he kept pausing every few lines to stare at the words. They seemed so hard to get through, hard to figure out the wording to, hard just to put on paper because Chath would see the words and it would become permanent. He couldn't be selfish and cling to a title like 'boyfriend' when it wasn't one he deserved. He hadn't tried to contact the newt any harder then Chath had tried to contact him, they were both busy with their own healing, their own training, there was a lot he was sure that Chath was dealing with that was harder then what he had dealt with. His injuries were something that would heal, something less traumatic then what the newt had gone through, to have an arm ripped from him.

He shook his head and forced the memories away, crushing them down as his pen started to move and his teeth worked more on the pen cap chewing it up and he spit it out onto the floor when it was pretty mangled beyond use.

"Ligeia?" The familiar, somewhat hesitant voice that belonged to the only other one in his room at the moment. His Frost Dragon partner Vorel who was laying next to his cot, starring up at him with huge blue eyes. He wasn't the smartest dragon in the world but Vorel always knew when something was troubling his owl, "What is hurting you?"

"Time." He said simply, writing down a few more words. He signed the letter and lifted his hand up to stare at the bracelet that he was currently wearing, something he rarely took off unless he was showering as he didn't want to risk it tarnishing. He looked over at the dragon, "I thought that maybe Chath and I needed space, needed to be our own people again."

Vorel starred at him and didn't seem to quite understand what that meant, his head cocking to one side. He pushed up to his feet, stepping closer, "Space? But... You are not close." He said, looking around the room. In fact he hadn't seen the newt or his partner Keir for a long while, why would they need space if they were never in the same space? Didn't that mean that they had plenty of space between them?

Ligeia reached out to scratch the dragon under his chin, "That is the problem, we aren't close." He murmured then wrote a quick thing at the bottom of the letter before rising to his feet, "So I need to set him free. Kinda like a bird, let him fly."

Vorel gave a chuckle, "But... Newts can't fly. Last I saw Keir couldn't fly well either on his own. Couldn't fly with Chath." At least last he knew which meant that he didn't think that he could do now either since the dragon's mind was simple and the time didn't mean anything to him.

The owl looked over at him then stepped closer, leaning against the Frost for a moment, nuzzling against his mane, "I love you Vorel." He said, then started towards the door, "Come on, come with me to put this in the mailbox? I... would like to deliver it in person but I don't think I have the resolve to do that. I guess I am still a bit weak in that aspect."

Vorel nodded before he fell into step behind his boy, neither seemed to notice the door across the hall or the fact that it was cracked slightly open. They missed the two yellow eyes peeking out as well one that belonged to Ter the other belonging to Baroness, the door quickly closed quietly as the two within mulled over the new information their eavesdropping gave to them. Interesting...

Chath_Emehud
I don't know what spurred this letter, nor do I wish to ask. Apparently I am too young for you...and will remain ever so in your eyes. Is this is what you want then though it may crush my soul then fine.

Keep the presents...I doubt I could bare to look at them now.

~Chath

(you would notice the scawl seems to have been written quickly and messily as if the newt had done it while still emotional)

It was about what he'd been expecting, the letter was a bit crumpled, the writing was quickly done from the looks of it, but when done in an emotional state it would be more true then if Chath waited and thought it over.

He gave a little sighing sound, walking back to his room. This was an instance where while he wanted to feel bad he wasn't going to allow it. This was his doing, he wasn't allowed to feel bad when he broke up with Chath and in the process 'crushed the newt's soul' as Chath put it. It was the one who had gotten broke up with that was allowed to be angry, sad, or upset. As the one who did the breaking up he couldn't... at least he was sure that was how it should work.

He stopped at his dresser, gazing at the folded up purple scarf that sat there and opened his top drawer. He tossed the letter into the drawer with his socks and underwear before he took the scarf off the top of his dresser, starring at it. Purple wasn't his color but he loved the scarf because of where it came from, not because of the color. He gave a sighing sound as he took the bracelet off his wrist for the first time in a long time and wrapped it in the scarf putting it in the drawer with the letter.

Chath had it right, as much as he wanted to hold onto the bracelet, cling to it, it was really hard to even look at it. The drawer was closed and he started out of the house, "Come on Vorel! We need to fly!" He called as he headed out the door leaving the Frost to scramble to keep up.

A Chat Between Brothers

(( The ending is different then with Ter's version. ))

Ter was curled up in a mass of coils and appeared to be watching television with his wyvern. Of course this was only cover, all spies needed cover after all. What he was really doing at the moment was watching and waiting, his brother was sitting on the couch reading one of his many boring tomes and he seemed... the same. It made no sense to him at all, why was it that the owl could seem the same as he always had after what all had occurred? He shifted so that he could roll his top half so he was laying on his stomach and set to watching once more. He was always so very calm and it annoyed the ever living hell out of the snake. Ter's tail tip started to twitch and his tongue flicked out rapidly.

Ligeia lifted his gaze from the book he was reading to stare at his brother, ear tufts twitching, "What?" He asked when his brother remained unblinking for an extended period of time.

The snake pushed to sitting up, watching him again for a long moment before saying, "You seem awfully laid back."

The owl blinked before returning his gaze to the pages that were open before him, "And I am not supposed to be?" He asked, careful to keep his voice and tone even.

The snake gave a snort, "I would think so, shouldn't you be... I don't know, upset or something?" This was strange, you would think a girly boy like Ligeia would be off crying over how terrible it was that he and Chath had broken up. He had to be missing something here, the letter had sounded a bit like it were all Ligeia's fault which made no sense. Hadn't the owl been all hearts and stuff over the newt? As weird as it was.

"What do you know?" He asked, lifting his gaze again to stare at the snack. Ter had to know something or he wouldn't keep asking questions like the ones he was asking.

"Not much, what I over heard and read in your little boyfriends letter." He said in full honestly.

Ligeia was on his feet in an instant and the book that was in his lap hit the ground with a dull thud, "What?! You read it? Ter that was none of your business and... wait you dug around through my dresser?"

Ter gave a snort as he pushed up on his coils so that he could meet his brother's gaze, "So what? I read it and I went digging around, not like you'd tell me what was going on if I were to ask."

"How do you know? You never bothered to ask!"

"Have you told anyone? Or is Chath the only one to know that you dumped him?" He snapped out.

Ligeia jerked back as if Ter had sucker punched him before shaking his head, "You don't know anything about it so why don't you drop it and go back to your cartoons." He said taking a step back, looking as if he were going to flee.

The snake boy didn't see as if he were gonna have that, taking a lunge forward and grabbed hold of his brother's wrists, "Where are you going? We aren't done talking."

"I am done... Ter is none of your business and even if it were what do you want me to say?" He asked, looking up at his brother and hating for a moment that Ter could be as tall as he wanted and that he himself would always be so short.

"Tell me whats going on? As sickeningly sweet as it was you seemed happy with your little boyfriend." He said, releasing him though he made no move to back off figuring that the moment he did the owl would bolt.

Ligeia gave a sigh, plopping back down in his seat and leaned forward to retreive his book, "I couldn't do it anymore." He murmured, lifting the tome up and hugged it to his chest, "I was... lonely and... It was all wrong. I just thought that it would be best you know, if I was the adult about it."

Ter drew his coils over and sat back on them, "All wrong?" He asked, curiously.

"Hes younger then I am Ter, a lot younger... I feel... felt guilty. He shouldn't be bound to me, I mean look at me. I'm not exactly an ideal mate, I am not even the right gender. Best I break up with him now and he find someone he can be happier with then have him come to resent me later." He said, looking at his feet, "There are times I wish I were a girl, at least I wouldn't be so strange."

Ter gave a sighing sound... ah crud... here was that stuff Damaris was going on about. Walking in another shoes, seeing things from their perspective, and all that.

"Geez... your an idiot Ligeia..." He said, a little surprised to see that Ligeia was doing his best to keep from showing emotion, "What are you holding back for? Why aren't you raging? Crying? Something? If you were really as girly as I tease you about being you'd be crying or something."

"Why? I mean... I can't cry or be upset, I was the one who broke up with him Ter. Hes the one allowed to be..."

"That is such total s**t!" Ter snapped, "I saw what he wrote to you, anyone could be upset over it even if they were the one who started the break up!"

Ligeia leaned forward to rest his forehead against his brother's shoulder, shaking his head, "Its alright, I am glad. He can be mad at me if it helps him to move on... and... I will be fine I have Vorel and dad and you... and its okay." He murmured, sounding less and less in control of his emotions but the shaking in his voice said he was still holding as firm a grip on them as he could.

Ter sighed and lifted his scaled hands up to lay them on his brother's head, "You act way to grown up, remind me never to act like you do." He muttered.

Ligeia gave a little nod of his head, "I will, don't worry." He murmured quietly, eyes closing.

"What are you going to do now?" He asked, "I mean... he meant a lot to you right? Are you gonna find someone else or..."

"No! Ahh... no... not right now, its to new. Even if we didn't talk for a while the break up is still new. I don't want to start dating again." He said, drawing back away from Ter and rose to his feet, "I think I am gonna go and fly some with Vorel... thanks Ter... I know it was a weirdly round about way or you showing your concern. Next time though please don't dig through my dresser."

"Yeah, yeah. Don't worry, digging through your drawers is a one time deal." He said, watching as Ligeia set his book aside and left the apartment with dragon. The snake gave a bit of a sigh, it was to weird.

Ligeia looked at Vorel before he crawled up onto the Frost Dragon's back upon them leaving the building, "Lets fly somewhere Vorel, really far. I don't want to land for as long as possible, okay?"

The Frost nodded before taking to the air, carrying the owl away from the ground and hopefully away from all that was hurting him.

A Understanding

Taking to the air always made him feel better, it was a feeling of absolute freedom when one got to be so far away from the ground that everything on it looked like specs. The air was much cooler up here as well which was a bonus. He wasn't exactly sure how far from home they were at the moment, they'd flown over Barton and decided to go North as he'd heard there was supposed to be a place to go fishing. Not like he exactly liked fishing up Vorel would appreciate it and Ligeia himself needed to land, his wings starting to feel a little tired.

"We are going to land now!" He called over to Vorel in Draconic, after his coversation with Ter he figured he should start talking more in dragon tongue then English, only dragons knew it and that way there was less a chance of people eavesdropping.

The Frost glanced over at his boy before they started to descend towards the ground in large circles before they touched down near to a dock. He gave a flutter of his wings before closing them against his back and turned to Vorel, "We got pretty far today, thank you." He murmured, reaching a hand out to pet Vorel's mane. He then turned to walk on the dock toward the water, "Its starting to cool off a bit." Mostly because they were near to water and the sun was starting to get lower in the sky.

Vorel walked alongside him, not on the dock but sliding into the water. He moved to the end of the dock and waited, watching as his boy sat down. The owl removed his sandals and put his fluffy feet in the water to help cool off. As he did so the Frost was silent, mulling things over before he finally got up the courage to say, "Chath is... gone now." He was a bit slow on the uptake, it took a lot of explaining or a lot of information coming his way before the Frost really understood things. This was one of those things that had gone completely over his head until he listened to the conversation between his boy and Terpsichore... something was wrong with the owl that he knew, he was hurting but Vorel hadn't known why. Until now.

Ligeia lifted his gaze to look over at the dragon before nodding his head, "Chath is gone."

Vorel shook his head, "He was... your mate, why gone?" He asked, laying his head on the dock next to his boy while the rest of the dragon enjoyed the cool water.

"Naw, not my mate but... someone close to me. We weren't together long enough for us to be considered mates." He explained to the Frost Dragon, a hard thing to do as it was somewhat akin to talking with a child in some aspects. Vorel was sweet and innocent, so kind...

Vorel lifted his head then asked in a slow, almost pained tone, "Then... Keir is gone as well...?" The dragon's heart ached a little, the idea that he wouldn't see the Black dragon again hurting him. How would he know if Keir ever figured out flying? He had hoped that he could go flying and hunting with his friend again. Keir never looked down on him either even though he was a Frost and Keir was a Black. They were very different breeds but seemed to get along... without the bond between Ligeia and Chath though... there was nothing that would keep them together. Given his temperament he couldn't see Keir coming to visit and were he to visit that meant visiting Chath and betraying his boy.

Ligeia leaned over to snuggled against his dragon's neck, "I'm sorry Vorel."

"Vorel has Ligeia and Ligeia has Vorel... will all be alright." He told him before drawing his head back, "Time for fishing now." He wanted to help his boy to perk up and to smile, to do so he couldn't mourn over the loss of his friend. As they grew most dragons became solitary creatures, Vorel was certain that Keir and himself would have been no different. They were both growing males and would want their own territories and one didn't share territory with another male dragon. It just wasn't done.

Ligeia gave a smile as he watched his dragon sink under the water, paddling off toward where the fish were at. His dragon was such a kind creature, which made him feel a little bit more guilty. He'd hurt Vorel without even thinking about it, hadn't thought about his friendship with Keir. At least he seemed to be alright, back to his normal state of being which gave Ligeia hope that everything would be able to return to normal soon enough as well.

A Heavy Burden, Lifted

Orpheus had grown used to Ter coming home with all manner of bumps, bruises, scrapes, and scratches, he was used to it and didn't really even bother to worry as he seemed good enough at taking care of himself in a fight and after a fight. To see Ligeia come home with a bruise was far different, the man was starring in wide eyed shock as his eldest son starred right back at him.

It was Ligeia that blinked first, his dark eyes closing and then as they opened he looked off to the side, seeming to be quite embarrassed over his injury, "Its... nothing. I just need to get an ice pack." He murmured, his cheeks going red.

Orpheus reached a hand out to catch hold of his son's chin, tilting it so he could better look at the angry bruise that darkened his face, "Ligeia... what happened?"

The owl drew back and gave a smile, "It was just an argument. Its hard to deal with people like that, ones that won't seem things from any perspective but there own but seriously I am alright... Besides I deserved it."

The red head didn't look in anyway convinced, in fact he looked unamused but turned to head to the tiny kitchenette of their apartment. He dug around in the freezer and got out an ice pack, bringing it over to Ligeia, "Do you want to talk about it? Talk about anything? I know that there has been a lot on your mind of late and I haven't been around to help out."

The owl starred up at his father for a long moment, before he moved to sit on the couch, "Long story." He said, holding a gloved hand out for the ice pack.

Orpheus starred at the hand a moment before he sat down with his son, "Do you still clip your nails and wear these gloves for the same reason I think you do?" He asked, placing the ice pack in the out stretched hand.

Ligeia nodded as he placed the cold pack against his aching cheek.

"I think at times that you take on more then you should, worries, responsibilities, stress." He said, lifting a hand to take off his glasses and set to cleaning them off on his shirt, "You are only young once you know."

The owl gave a laugh, "That's what she said before she ended up pegging me."

"She? Ligeia... your getting in fights with girls?" He asked, lifting an eyebrow.

The owl shook his head rapidly, "No! No, I didn't do anything back. She gave me a punch and a kick but I took it like a man and didn't retaliate."

"Should have let me defend you." Came a muttered voice off to the side, one that belonged to Vorel. The Frost still wasn't amused by the fact that he had to stand by and allow the mantis girl to hurt his child... he had only done so because Ligeia had asked him to stay out of it.

The owl reached a hand out to pat the Frost Dragon's glassy scales in a soothing manner before looking over at his father, "I... some of what she said got to me and I raised my voice, I feel guilty about it... but I didn't once lift a hand against her."

The red head nodded, "I believe you Ligeia."

The owl slumped to the side against the arm of the couch and let the ice pack rest on his cheek, "I just... I thought that what I had done was for the best you know? I thought that maybe if I did it the way that I did it the Chath would be happier... I think I messed up. She said I was being to grown up, that I needed to act my age but... what does that mean?" He looked to his father for instruction, "I'm learning battle techniques, magic, helping Vorel learn to fight... I am helping out in classes, looking after the younger kids, I don't want to act like a child I want to be able to help you, help others..."

"Ligeia..." Orpheus found himself feeling a little guilty for having drug Ligeia to so many classes to help out in them, equally guilty for having put a babysitting job or two on his plate as well, "You can have interests outside of all of your work. Your brother has his piercing thing and his cartoons... you can have stuff like that as well."

Ligeia's dark eyes sank half closed, "Sitting around playing won't help... I won't be strong enough that way."

"Strong... enough?" The man asked of his son.

The owl nodded, "I don't want to see anyone else get hurt in front of me again and be helpless to stop it... All that happened when I tried to protect Chath was that I got myself banged up and broken! If I had been able to help him maybe we'd still... maybe..." He let his eyes close completely, "I don't like that I always think 'maybes' and 'what ifs'..."

Realization started to piece itself together for the man, so many little clues and yet he'd still missed what was going on in Ligeia's life, "I'm sorry Ligeia, I should have tried harder to help you... I missed it, that you were in need of a hand."

The owl sat up quickly, "No! No, please don't worry about it! Its not your fault!"

Orpheus reached a hand out to brush back a strand of hair away from Ligeia's face, "And what happened that day with the dragons wasn't your fault. It was something that had been building for a very long time and you and Chath and the others were just unlucky enough to be there when they finally had enough."

"But I... I should have..."

"No. They should have been able to do more, the ones in charge instead of thinking sending in children would be a good idea." He said, rising to his feet, "I don't want you thinking for another moment that you should have come up with magic words that would have been able to stop what happened. I was told what happened, what you did, that you stood up against the Black dragon when she grabbed Chath. It was very brave, you could do nothing more then that."

Ligeia blinked a couple times starring at his father then lowered his head to hide his eyes as they had suddenly gone watery. It was strange, such simple words and he felt as if a heavy weight was lifted off his chest.

"You should take your ice pack and your dragon to your room and rest, I will order out for dinner. Anything you want in particular?" He asked.

The owl gave a smile, rising to his feet and scrubbed at his eyes with a gloved hand, "Anything is good... though some Chinese would be best. Those noodles things I like and some terriyaki chicken." He requested.

"Alright, I will bring it to you when it gets here." He told his son, smiling as he watched the boy head for his room with Vorel following after him. The man sat down on the couch heavily, giving a sighing sound. It was hard some days this whole parenting thing... but being able to help from time to time did make it easier. The man reached over to grab the phone and the stack of take out menus that sat with it, digging through the for Chinese Food Menu.
