[Battle] In the dark of the night
User Image
Dear Diary:

Can't believe I tried to kill a boy today! Mind you, he did ambush me first.. but he couldn't have been much older nor taller than my younger brother! He was really too thin too... I guess I gotta be careful on Sodoul, there's more Oblivionite's there who hate my people than I've encountered elsewhere.

Aftermath: win!

Master Growth Quest

Am I more than you bargained for yet?
Everyone in their life experiences a point where someone or something is in their way, underestimating them, judging them unfairly, holding them back. Whatever form it takes, it leaves a lasting impression, and even after massive achievements, these kinds of things can still linger at the back of a person's mind. Who has wronged your character in the past? Who does your character most feel they still have something to prove to, if only to rub their successes in this person's face?

RP your character looking back on the successes and pains of their life to date, considering their relationships in full and what they need to do to move on from their past regrets or - if appropriate - exact a little much-deserved revenge. Do you go seeking an encounter out? Or perhaps your character simply runs into this person who has never valued or judged them adequately - how do you cope, and what helps your character to move on from the injustices of their younger years to the poise and power befitting of a true master of their art?

Kadryn was set back after that ambush by the young Oblivionite. It gave her cause to think, as this was the first Oblivionite who acted really hostile towards her. Sighing to herself, she unfurled her wings and flew into the canopy of the dark forest. It was night time, and the cool night breeze smelled of spring. High above her a full moon shone in a cloudless sky. Its pale light illuminated Kadryn as she sat on a large branch of a tree that towered over the forest about her. Her mind was sent back to her childhood, to her old teacher, Krelsiarla Lorin. She hadn’t thought about her for a while but now she did: an Oblivionite who actually acted like an Oblivionite should... if you believed what Kral had taught. Cruel people who attacked from the dark and gave no quarter. Kadryn hadn’t believed it back then, and she didn’t believe it now. They were just people. Kral also hadn’t thought Kadryn was ready to go hunting when she was younger... hadn’t thought she’d really amount to anything since Kadryn had been such a poor student.
From there Kadryn let her mind wander in the past, looking at all she’d seen and gone through. Finding out about her berserk side in the fights against dragons, the surprise of killing a Kiandri when she’d gotten lost flying to Ayr and ended up at Eowyn instead. Meeting many people, fighting so many dragons of so many varying strengths. Fighting other people, meeting Khehora’s; nice and mean. Getting hurt, having fun, falling in love. So much had happened and she had proven to herself that she was a strong person, capable and able to follow her dreams. And then there’d been that problem in the Citadel. She frowned as she remembered that idiot who’d wanted to ‘spar’ with her… and had taunted her into a berserk rage in front of all his classmates. She’d done her best to kill him.. what had been his name? She couldn’t remember it, but she could still remember those insults he’d tossed at her; still remembered his fearful face as she’d done her best to kill him. Why was she thinking of these things? She sighed and shook her head. Probably because that Oblivionite boy had called up thoughts on her past by acting like her old teacher had claimed they acted..

Her mind returned to that long ago event. Why did thinking about that stupid boy she’d tried to kill still piss her off? Hadn’t she gotten over it? Or maybe she felt this way since she’d tried to kill one of her own people. Was she trying to justify her actions on that day, make herself feel like she was not in the wrong? She leaned back against the tree trunk and grumbled. Okay, so trying to kill him was not a good thing and it was no excuse that she’d been berserk. True she’d spent months out in the wild, learning control her rage, but maybe it wasn’t enough, maybe it could happen again. I’ll just have to keep that event in my heart to remind myself of the potential consequences my rage can have. She vowed to herself she would not allow such an event to happen again.

Why am I thinking about these dark things! I may have only a few people who weren’t the nicest people, but I have so many more good friends! Eanah, Maslin, Grrel, my family, Smilira, and Kirosh; all of who I know care about me. I have done far more good than that one bad event so I shouldn’t be dwelling on what happened years ago!

As she’d been thinking on this, she’d been spotted by another Orderite. She was, after all, in a tall tree in the open sitting in the moon light. Quite easy to spot and this one decided to come and talk to her. After all, Orderites in the Oblivionite land were rare.

Kadryn turned around at the sound of someone landing on a branch near her. Her mind, still thinking back to her past, recognized the man. He was older, but he still resembled that boy she’d tried to kill those few years ago. Uh oh, she thought, what’s gonna happen now?

“Ah hello, there-- You!” The man said, at first all friendly then his face twisted in rage as he recognized her and his hand gripped his sword hilt.
Welp, he recognized me. Guess it’s as hard for him to forget that day as it is for me. Kadryn thought with wry amusement.

“Hi.” She said in a dry voice, neither welcoming nor hostile. If he tried to start something, she’d end it. Not permanently, but just knock him out. She made no hostile move, her mace still lay in it’s thong on her back. If a fight came, she’d fight with her fists. That way she wouldn’t kill him. I hope he’s not an arrogant p***k like he was back then, she thought with very little hope that it’d be true.

Larmes stood with his hand on his hilt, eyes narrowed and jaw clenched. This was the person who had tried to kill him. He inhaled and forced himself to relax. Standing there ready to fight when the other was relaxing on the branch made him seem foolish.
“Are you not going to say anything?” He said in a tight voice. Kadryn sighed; she could hear the anger. Guess he still hasn’t gotten over it.
“Why should I say anything? You were the one who came over here.” She said in that same dry voice. Not hostile, but not friendly. She did not want to deal with him. His eyes narrowed and he straightened up proudly and crossed his arms across his chest as he looked down his nose at the smaller woman.

“You tried to kill me-”

“You insulted and goaded a barbarian into a berserk rage. What’d you expect?”

“That does not excuse--”

“And your actions excuse you?” Kadryn interrupted again. Her eyes narrowed in anger. “You think that because you had better skill at the sword you could insult and humiliate others in battle? But when someone fights back and snaps because you went too far, you are innocent?” She stood up and walked up to him, glaring at the taller man as she poked him in the chest with her finger as she snarled at him. “Yes, I should have tried to control myself better. But you shouldn’t have pushed so hard. I was there to spar. Not be humiliated like you did to others. I do not agree humiliating others. Treat others with respect and try your best and do not look down upon those weaker than you. That is what I do. You should be doing the same.”

“I do!” Was the indignant response.

“Oh really? You mean after I almost killed you? Or before? Because I heard a different story from Smil!”

“You have no right--”

“Yes I do. As the one who tried to kill you, as the one who felt guilty for doing so, as the one who was afraid of myself, I have the right. I have the rage inside me still. It’s there always, and I must always think before I act now. I must always be careful of who I spar with, of who I fight. I can never lose myself in battle against another again because I will always be afraid of what I can do. I do not want people to ever be afraid of me, I do not want to see the look in their eyes like I saw that day I tried to kill you while in a rage. I have every right to say this. I had to change how I acted after that fight, did you?”

He looked away nervously and Kadryn gave a harsh laugh. “Thought not. You just sat on your pedestal and bewailed how cruel and dangerous I was right? You didn’t learn anything, or try to change did you? I bet you still pick on others and try to humiliate them. I do not want to deal with you. Leave before you send me into yet another rage. Except this time, there won’t be a Smilira around to save you be calming me down. Remember that you arrogant little p***k. You would be dead if not for the kindness of others.”
Kadryn glared at him and he back off. As he flared his wings he glared back over at her;

“I won’t forgive you. You are a menace to society. You and every barbarian with your senseless rages! You are all dangers to others!”

Kadryn gave a harsh laugh. “Believe that if you will. Unlike you, we ‘senseless raging barbarians’ as you call us, have far more control than you ever will. We have to control ourselves at all times. And yet despite all of us and our rages, you’re still alive aren’t you? If I was truly that uncontrollable, I’d have grabbed my mace already. But no. I have learned control, to keep calm and not give in to the rage. What have you learned since then? I have learned to love myself, rage and all. To know that it is not all of me, just a part. You? I think you have not learned anything. You are still a child. Now get out of my sight you spineless b*****d. Go and think on what I have said.. though from what I have seen, you’ll just complain and bemoan how mean I am….” He left in a huff, not wanting to see her mace up close and personal again. Kadryn sighed and slumped once he had gone.

After a bit she heard a voice from below.

“Well, that was interesting.”

Looking down she gave Kirosh a tired smile. He was leaning against the trunk looking up at her.

“Today hasn’t been my day. Some poor Oblivionite boy tried to ambush me and almost got killed and then I had to meet that idiot again.”
Kirosh smiled sadly and straightened, holding his arms out to her.

“Come down here, love; you look like you’re in need of a hug.”

Kadryn glided down on her soft silent wings, and clung to Kirosh, taking comfort in his closeness and the fact that he loved her despite her berserk side.

“Why do people only see the rage and not the control we exert to keep it under control?”

“Because they are blind and see only what they want too. To see your control would mean to give up something to feel superior about. Because you are a threat to them, your control over yourself means that you are better than they.” Kirosh said as he laid his cheek against her tousled blue hair. Kadryn squeezed Kirosh slightly before pulling back and giving him a warm smile.

“You always know what to say to make me feel better. Let’s get back to tracking the notbajovin. I’ll think on today’s events later when we aren’t in the middle of hostile territory.”

The Last Tasks, part 3
User Image
Kadryn stalked the notbajovin. It was night time and she was beginning to think she’d finally found a notbajovin on its way towards that glade she was supposed to find. Looking about she saw yet more tracks. Notbajovin usually left little to no tracks, hence her difficulties. But the sheer amount of the felines passing by here meant that she saw more tracks. Now all she had to do was get to the glade, grab that flower and then get out without killing anything. Which was going to be just as hard as finding and tracking a notbajovin was! I wonder if he gave me hard tasks cause eh wanted to spend more time with me, she thought with a smile. The Gaili task had been easy. The other one, finding her way through that evil maze? That had taken a while. And it’d been over a year since they’d set out. Mostly cause Kadryn and Kirosh got sidetracked and went exploring. Plus she’d been in no real hurry to complete them!

She straightened up and quickly moved onwards. She was as quiet as she could be, but eventually she gave up trying to move silently and took to the skies. Her wings were like owl wings, with large feathers meant for flying swiftly and silently. She glided from tree to tree, tailing the notbajovin she saw. There were more and she made certain that she was high in the tree boughs to hide from them. Finally the land dipped down, forming an odd valley in the forest. A stream slid through the valley, filing it with soft burbling as it ran over rocks towards the large deep pond in the center of the valley.
Kadryn sat and looked about her, it was beautiful here. The trees were tall and covered in twisting vines that had pale flowers blooming, putting out a sweet scent into the air. There were only a few bushes; mostly it was grass, tall dark green grass that covered the entire area. The pond was made of clear waters and it reflected the half full moon. Around the edges of the pond were cattails and tall elegant plants with unopened flower buds on them. Only one of these plants had a flower; pale lavender with a deep black at the base of the long soft petals. Kadryn knew this was the flower she had to get.
She climbed up into the tree and unfurled her wings. She wasn’t going to even try to creep through the grass! It was probably hiding ay too many Notbajoivns. So instead, she’d dive from the sky! She flew up high into the night sky before turning around and looking downwards. The pond was visible through the trees that lined its edges.
Diving in the quiet way that only those with the soft feathers like she had could do, Kadryn angled herself towards the open flower. Her hand reached out to pluck the flower as she banked her wings and skimmed over the pond surface. Loud hissing and screeches came from the grass all around. Kadyrn whistled; she’d been right to do it this way! There were many more notbajovin’s here than she’d thought! In her hand lay the flower, its roots still intact. The speed from her dive carried her over the pond and back into the trees. Chuckling to herself, she flew back towards her camp.
After about a year or so she’d finally done it! All her tasks were done. Kirosh was waiting for her at the camp. She offered him the flower and a kiss.

Kadryn and Kirosh were on their way to the Sodoul Tribe’s camp after she’d completed her tasks. She was now a member of the Wild Tribe, but they had to make it official by reporting it to a Chief. They stopped as night fell and made camp. Kirosh said they were close enough to reach the camp if they pushed on, but neither was really in that much of a hurry.
Kadryn set to cooking dinner while Kirosh set up the rest of the camp. It was part of the deal since Kirosh couldn’t cook; an even distribution of work, each doing what they were best at. He finished gathering wood and tossed down a dead Magbit adult with a grin.
“I got a lucky shot so we can add that to whatever you’re cooking tonight.”

Kadryn smiled up at him and teased, “Only a lucky sot? So modest these days!”

“No need to do my best and embellish to impress you.” He said as he leaned down to kiss her cheek. “I have other ways of impressing you and demonstrating my affection now.”

She blushed lightly, he had certainly gotten far more touchy feely lately true… They hadn’t gone further than kissing yet. But she had found herself wondering what it’d be like to do more, what all the aching hot feelings she had would lead to. She’d never done anything nor felt anything like this before meeting Kirosh, so she didn’t know what to do or expect. She hadn’t even really talked too much about what boys and girls did together… she’d always tuned out when her parents had tried to talk to her about it so she had only the barest scraps of understanding about it.
I should have listened a bit more, she thought ruefully. I know it leads to babies and is pleasurable, but not much else! Kirosh sat down next to her and began to help skin the magbit.

“What’re you thinking about so hard?”
He asked.
Kadryn looked at him then back down to her hands, blushing slightly.

“Uh… nothing much” She muttered. He smiled in a way that made her insides twist with desire.

“Really?” He said but didn’t ask further. It was one of the things she loved about him, he didn’t press too much and waited for he to be ready to talk.

After dinner, he slid over to her and wrapped an arm about her waist, pulling her closer to him. Kadryn leaned into his shoulder, heart beating slightly faster. Cuddling was something she’d come to enjoy quite a bit. She looked up at him and hesitantly caressed his cheek with a hand.

“Kirosh, what’s it like to… you know… uh…” She blushed furiously as she blurted out her thoughts. He grinned rakishly, an eyebrow twitching upwards.

“Is that what you’ve been thinking about so hard?” He murmured as he sent the hand on her waist up her back, slipping it under her shirt. Her heart skipped a beat again as shivers went down her back.
He leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips, the other hand going to join the other at her waist. Pulling back he gave her a gentle yet eager smile.

“If you’re curious, I can show you, love.”

Kadryn, her lips still warm from his, blushed harder, her cheeks stained purple with embarrassment and longing. Her body was hot and starting to ache with longing. She swallowed as her heart sped up, “I … can you?” She asked in a husky voice, not sure what could happen but wanting something, wanting him.

“Mmmm,” Kirosh said as he pulled her into his arms, and kissed her with a hot passion. His hands began to wander, touching her where she had never known she wanted him to, leaving her hot yet shivering. “Gladly.”

After wards, Kirosh pushed himself onto one arm, his dark brown skin still dotted with sweat. Kadryn looked up at him and gave him a tired yet happy smile

“Don’t know what I was thinking it’d be like, but… mmm.” She sighed contentedly and reached up and ran a hand from his cheek down his chest, feeling the hard muscles beneath his skin. She'd wanted to touch him like this for some time. Why was I so nervous to reach out before? She wondered.

“Always glad to oblige, sweetling.”
He said with a grin as his gazed down at the small woman who’d become so important to him over the past year. He leaned down and kissed her again, soft and gentle now that the body’s passion had been cooled.

Do you want a baby?
User Image
words: 598

Kadryn found her thoughts turning to family more and more these days. She had a new little sister, her younger brother was courting some girl, and she herself had finally fallen in love with (in her mind) the perfect partner. Traveling around with Kirosh was fun… but it’d been so nice to have him meet her family and be apart of that aspect of her life as well.
It was dawn and she was awake before Kirosh again. They were, as usual, wandering about the place and exploring, simply enjoying each other and the wilderness. She looked at his sleeping face and smiled as she propped her head on her arm. I wonder if he wants a family? Children. She knew she wanted them, but how would her lover feel about it?
She reached a hand up to brush away some hair that’d fallen away from his face.
Kirosh opened an eyelid and gave her a sleepy smile as he tightened his arms about her and pulled her in for a kiss.

“How do you always wake up so early?” he said after he’d pulled back. Kadryn rested her head on his chest.

“Country folk have to wake up early to get to work, so I just got into the habit as a child. Kirosh, do you want to have a baby?” She asked, figuring she might as well just ask him point blank.

Kirosh became wide a wake and looked at her, “A… baby? Dear gods, I got you pregnant didn’t I?!”

She snorted with amusement, “No! Not yet anyways.”

“Ah.. good.” He said as he hugged her. Kadryn felt a little disappointed, did that mean he didn’t want children. She pulled back and sat up.

“Does that mean you don’t want children?”
Kirosh paused and saw she was serious. Well, she had a happy family so … guess family was far more important to her than it had been for him growing up.
“Um… not… not quite. I… I’m not sure Kadryn.” He said with a sigh. “It never occurred to me to want them I guess. Do you want them?”

She nodded and looked down at him with big sad eyes. Kirosh groaned and rubbed his face with his hands.
“Argh. Children…. Do I want children?” He muttered to himself. Kadryn, yes; he wanted her, wanted to be by her side. Kids though… He’d never had any younger siblings, and he hadn’t really interacted with young people before as the Wild tribe tended to be mostly adults. How did one want kids? Or treat them? Raise them?
He reached up and pulled Kadryn back down to him and gave her a hug. “Well, I don’t have any bad thoughts on the matter of children… But if it’s with you, I think it’ll be okay.”

Kadryn gave him a happy smile and kissed him. So he wasn’t predisposed against the idea!! “I think you’ll be a good father. Besides, we don’t have to start a family now if you aren’t ready. Just... maybe one day? ”

“Sure,” he smiled. “Why not? ‘Sides, if it’s your child, how could I not love it?” He grinned and nuzzled her neck.

“Our child, Kirosh; not mine. Ours.” Kadryn said as she felt a shiver go down her back at his touch.

“Ours, eh? I like the sound of that.” He murmured as he ran his hands along her back, leaving trails of shivering heat behind. Kadryn gasped slightly. “You’ll need to convince me more though.” He murmured huskily as he began to kiss her neck and move slowly down wards.

Telling the Parents
User Image
words: 1223

Kirosh leaned against the fence of his father’s ranch and watched his old man exercise some Hastars. He’d come here to talk to his father about Kadryn. While he disliked most of the people in this village, his father he still cared for and respected and Kirosh wanted to share this happier part of his life with Larson, his father. Though he was nervous, what if he disapproved and reacted badly? Kirosh did not want to lose his only remaining family member. He sighed and straightened up as he saw his small and bald father finish the exercises and release the Hastars to return to the herd. Time to get this over with.

Larson looked over at his son and smiled. “So you came back finally. Enjoy the outside world?” He asked in his soft and surprisingly deep voice.

“Yeah. Lots more fun than sticking around here.” Kirosh said with a grin.

“Come to take over the ranch?” Larson asked, though he knew the answer and knew his boy had come back for another reason.

“Psssh! Course not!”

“Good, cause the villagers wouldn’t buy from you. Burning the town hall down burnt more than just the building.”

Kirosh gave a lazy shrug and held his arms out, “Who me? No clue what you’re talking about Pops.”

Larson chuckled and shook his head. “Rascal. Please tell me you caused trouble for others?”

“I’m as innocent as one can be!” Kirosh batted his eyelids in mock innocence.

“Ha! Tell that to one who did not see you born lad! Or grown. You're mischief. What brings you back here? If you get caught again, I won’t help this time.”

“Well.” Kirosh shifted nervously. “There’s a girl….”

“Ohhh... Another one?”

“Pops!” Kirosh looked offended.

“What? Some Tribe members stop by and gossip with me. I give them discounts cause they’re your new family.”

“Uhhhg.” Kiross ran a hand through his Mohawk, “Stupid gossip mongers! No. This one’s different Pops, this one is… permanent. We… we’re wanting to get married.”

Larson looked over at Kirosh and gave him a gentle smile. “Good. Bout time you found someone special.”

“No questions?” Kirosh asked, a little shocked at his father’s quick acceptance.

“What? About the fact that she’s an Orderite? You’ve been seeing her for over a year now… met her family….Went on long romantic hunts with her, she’s a good cook, and her name’s Kadryn….” Larson grinned at Kirosh’s shocked expression. “I told you. Members come to me and gossip! Plus you know, her Uncle happens to be the main contact for smugglers in the Tribe. All sorts of information comes from him. Bet ya didn’t know that!” Kirosh opened his mouth… and then shut it without a word as he thought. Well, it certainly explained Tarlon’s quick acceptance and the way he seemed to already know some things that he shouldn’t have. After a bit he folded his arms and glared at his father.

“You’ve known all this time?”

“Sure did. Wondered when you’d show up and tell me yourself.”

“Uhg. Pops, you’re irritating you knew that?”

“Course I am. When and where are you going to settle down?”

“Settle?”

“Yeah. She’s a family girl. Gonna want kids. For that, you’ll need a home. Why do you think I gave up traveling and trading when your mother had you?”

“Uh….”

“Haven’t thought about it have you kid?” Larson laughed and waved his son into the house. “Start thinking boy. Start thinking.”
~~~
Kadryn was also facing a similar situation back on Serenia. She was going to let her mother know about her relationship with Kirosh. The rest of her family are knew and either approved or didn’t mind… but they were leaving it up to her to break the news. For which Kadryn was most unhappy. Yes she knew she was supposed to be the one telling her mother, but it was still nerve wracking! Running her hands through her hair, she pushed open the door to the family kitchen and looked in. Her mother was preparing dinner and was alone. At least I won’t have to do this in front of an audience she thought as she walked in. Laasya looked up and smiled.
“Kadryn! Nice to see you again. Here to help me with dinner?”
Kadryn shifted from foot to foot. “Uh... Sure. I… I came to talk to you actually.” She said hesitantly.
“Oh? About what?” Laasya put down the spoon she’d been stirring the soup with. Kadryn looked nervous and uncertain. Something she hadn’t seen on her grown up daughter’s facer in several years!
“About… About Kirosh.” Kadryn said and paused looking up before looking back down at her feet. Laasya’s eye’s narrowed. The Oblivionite? She waited to hear what Kadryn was going to say. What happened to make her daughter so nervous?
“Um… Well...He’s..” Kadryn stumbled and stuttered before sighing and rubbing her hands over her face and taking a deep breath. “We want to get married.” Laasya stiffened.
“Married?”
“..Yeah.”
“To an… Oblivionite?”
“… Yeah.”
She turned back to the pot and blindly stirred it as her mind raced. Well… he was a nice person… but an Oblivionite? That meant banishment if it was found out! Her oldest child would be forever banned from the Orderite society! And… well, it was nice Kadryn had finally found someone, but did it have to be someone so unsuitable? Not only an Oblivionite, but a wild tribe member too! Of course Kadryn was also a Tribe member…
Kadryn’s heart sank as her mother turned away and didn’t speak for a minute. She didn’t approve. Kadryn felt a sharp pain, she wanted her mother to approve! To be happy for her!
“Ma?” She asked in a small voice, “Are you… disappointed? Is… It’s okay right? You don’t mind if I marry him? Please?” She whispered. Kadryn was very much a family person, she loved her parents and wanted them to be there for her and any children she had in the future. Laasya sighed and turned back to Kadryn, walking over to wrap her arms about her.
“Oh sweetling, don’t worry. I’ll come around soon. It’s just... An oblivionite….”She sighed and pulled back. “I’ll still love you, and stand by you, if you do this. I wish you had found someone more… appropriate but if you’re happy…”
"Really?” Kadryn looked across at her mother, who was slightly taller than her.
“Really. You are my daughter and I’ll love any grandchildren you give me. It will be hard though. You may get banished if it gets out, you won’t be able to live here that’s for sure. The town’s growing, more people every day are moving in and not all are as open-minded as those you grew up with.”
“That’s fine.” Kadryn smiled, “So long as you’ll be there for me.”
“Just me? Have you told your father or anyone else?” Laasya asked curiously and with relief as she saw the pain in her daughter’s eyes go away.
“They already know. Da, Aunt, and Uncle figured it out when Kirosh was with us at the Star festival.”
“What? How come no one told me back then?!” Laasya said with a pout as she gave her daughter another hug before returning to fixing up dinner. Kadryn smiled as she joined her mother, relieved and happy to know her family would be there by her side.
Reunion
Kadryn was sitting on a rock watching the ferry dock in a small cove in the wilderness. Her uncle had brought her here, told her that this was one place where the Smugglers came and dropped off stuff. She smiled at the memory of that conversation. Apparently her uncle was a smuggler for the Tribe… and the whole thing with the Tribe wrecking his Café had been done deliberately… they’d done so to make it look like the chief contact for smuggling was not one of them… It’d worked too, no one had found Tarlon and his smuggling ring yet! He and his wife had been upset about the break in (he’d gone and broken some heads over it too) but he’d realized why so he hadn’t been too mad.
Now she waited here for Kirosh to land, her Borgnah mount sitting behind her and snoozing. She was slightly nervous as to hear what his father’s reaction had been. She’d never met the man, though Kirosh had told her some information about his past and family. But she wanted to meet him one of these days, she knew that he lived too deep into Oblivionite territory to try and meet him, but perhaps he wouldn’t mind traveling to meet her? She smiled and those thoughts left as she spotted Kirosh walking off the ferry. She couldn’t help the happy feelings she got when she saw him. The lonely feeling she’d had after he’d left vanished and she had to force herself to hold still and not run down there to attack him with hugs and kisses. Kirosh spotted her in the distance and grinned, he turned to say something to the ferry men as he mounted up and waved farewell to them.
Once he was close, she flared her wings and flew to him, a huge smile on her face. Kirosh slid off his Hastar and held out his arms to catch her in a hard hug.
“Missed you,” he murmured as he buried his face in her hair, feeling something inside of him relax. He’d never been so attached to someone before that a prolonged absence actually hurt. Kadryn pulled back and smiled up at him before leaning up on her tip toes to kiss him warmly on the lips.
“Missed you too.”
Leirs, the Borgnah, skittered up on the rock just vacated and sat perched, watching the odd display his master was making. Face-eating? How weird… faces weren’t nutritious at all! There were better things to eat than faces….. And washer face getting eaten or was she eating? Leirs could not figure it out.
Kirosh pulled back slightly, leaving a breathless Kadryn to smile up at him. Running a hand through her hair with a gentle smile, he shook his head.
“Well, that went easier than Expected. My father already knew all about you…apparently your uncle...” he paused and wondered if he should actually mention it. Maybe Tarlon didn't want his family to be aware of his illegal activities.
“Is a smuggler for the Tribe.” Kadryn sighed and shook her head. “I wonder if he’s told Aunty yet? I’ve certainly never got wind of that! But… so he already knew? Can I meet him?” She asked, snuggling into his arms for more kisses and hugs.
Kirosh chuckled and kissed her again, “I think he’s going to come out whenever we get a house…” The Hastar beside him snorted and pawed at the ground, it’d just noticed the huge hairy spider staring at them. Kirosh looked up at the Hastars sign of warning and spotted Leirs as well; he muttered an oath and pulled away from Kadryn to grab his bow.
Kadryn laughed, she knew what's caught their attention. “That’s Leirs! He’s my mount! I caught and trained it while you were away,” She said with a grin, proud of her accomplishment even if she'd had lots of help. “You mentioned a house… do you want one?” She asked, hopefully. It’d be nice to have a place to call her own that wasn’t in the attic of her parent’s house!
Kirosh looked at the borgnah and back to Kadryn. Trained it? Well, that was a story he wanted her to tail in more depth! But apparently Kadryn had different priorities.
“Ah... yeah. House. Um.. Well, you mentioned wanting to start a family.. so … I thought maybe I could sort of ease into the whole settled family thing…” He said as he put his bow back down and ran a hand through his hair. He still was nervous about settling down and what it might mean.
Kadryn threw her arms around his shoulders and gave him another kiss ecstatically, “Yay! Don’t worry Kirosh, even if we have kids, it’s not like we can’t let a Tribe member take care of them for a week and go explore some wild place and just be us two gain for a little bit. Or my family could look after them while we do that. It’s not like we have to completely abandon our lives as they are now. Changes will happen yes, but not all at once and not to something completely different.” She said with a gentle smile; she figured he was most worried about losing his freedom, which she could understand!
Kirosh looked at her, “Really? I... I’m not sure I can stand living in one place for years on end…”
“Really. I have no problem taking any child we have with us when they’re a little older. I think I’d want to show them some of the beautiful places we’ve been to, teach them how to survive in the wild, show them the world…. though I may be a bit over protective,” She said as she ran a finger down his jaw line. “I was that way with my baby brother…”
Kirosh chuckled and caught her hand to give it a kiss. “Well, that’s a relief. I’m really nervous with this whole settling down idea. But… I did find a nice place on Ayr I think you’ll like… Since we can’t live in any Orderite or Oblivionite town, I went looking and asking around in the Wild Tribe. There’s this nice canyon on Ayr, fairly hidden, has running water with fish in it, greenery about the place, deep enough so the wind isn't always blowing, and it’s near one of the Tribe’s camps…. So somewhat safe, but not civilized.”
“Sounds lovely.” If he was actively looking for a place, than maybe he was looking forward to it a bit… plus if he found a place he liked, that meant a better chance at him being happy! Kadryn thought as she pulled Kirosh over to Leirs. "When do you want to take me there to see it?"
"Hmm, soon I guess." Kirosh looked at Kadryn, she looked happy, which meant her mother hadn't reacted too badly nor had rejected her. "How'd it go with your mother?"
"Um.. Okay? Ma will.. take a while to come around. She's a little upset that you're ...not 'appropriate,' is how she phrased it. She said you're nice, and that she'll support my choice, but to give her time to get used to it." Kadryn sighed. "I wished that people wouldn't banish others over things like this.. I think that's what she's really worried about. The banishment and how if she wants to see me, she'll have to come to me. That I wont be welcome back in the towns."
Kirosh nodded glumly. He knew that not being able to openly bring him to her family's house hurt Kadryn, but what could they do? Their peoples had been enemies for so long, that it would take something drastic to change their traditional views.
"Well, at least she'll stay by your side," he said. "And they can always come visit us right? Which is another reason for a house I guess. It gives your family, and mine I guess, a place to come and find us, some place to stay that isn't a tent." He grinned, "Somehow I don't think your mother likes camping too much!"
"She doesn't!" Kadryn giggled, "Picnics yes, but sleeping outside? She really hates it, something about bugs, sticks poking her in the back, too cold." She reached Leirs and held out her hand from him to bump into for pets. "So I told you this was Leirs..." She and Kirosh spent the rest of the afternoon getting the Borgnah and Hastar to tolerate each other. Difficult going since both looked upon the other as a food source or enemy!
House!
words: 1969
Kirosh and Kadryn took the Wild Tribe’s smuggling ferry to Ayr. There was no other way she’d be able to take Leirs, her borgnah mount, with her otherwise, and her mother had made it quite clear that she would not tolerate the large spider near her house! Not that Kadryn wanted to leave him behind, not if she and Kirosh were going to build a house and settle down a bit!
Kirosh was slightly infected with Kadryn’s happy mood. Seeing her so excited about a house put some of his unease to rest. And it wasn’t like they were going to be living in a village! Instead they’d have a small house in a semi wild area that the Wild tribe would stop by during winter…. Which meant he wouldn’t have to give up his hunting and exploring!
After leaving the ship behind, Kadryn and Kirosh mounted up and rode inland.
“Do you know how to build a house?” Kadryn asked him. She didn’t, in fact, she wasn’t very craft orientated unless it was cooking and some art.
He laughed, “Me? Ha! I avoided all things chores when a kid and haven’t changed much.” He grinned, “But we’ll be meeting a few friends of mine in a week or so and they’ll help us.”
They talked about what they wanted for the house and finally agreed on a basic outline. Four rooms, one for guests, one for them, one for a storage place for their stuff, and one for a future child. A good kitchen, Kadryn wanted a nice large one with all the tools and supplies that she’d grown up with. She also wanted to start a garden, and maybe have a small coop for farm animals, something that made eggs. She smiled, she knew that Kirosh loved to hunt, so why not get him to capture wild animals and domesticate them? Plus hunting for food and keeping the area clear of predators would give both of them stuff to do outside of house work. I’ll just have to keep thinking up ideas to keep him happy, if he’s willing to give up some of his freedom for me, I’ve gotta do the same for him.
“Kirosh, what about food? Hunting get us meat, but the other stuff? Do you want to trade for those, or maybe have some creatures here? We’ll have to trade for grains and a lot of the fruits until we can get some of the plants grown anyways….”
He thought for a moment and then nodded. “We can have a small barn I guess. Though it’ll attract predators.”
“Well, then we can have fun defending them and hunting down the predators," Kadryn said with a smile. Kirosh tossed her a grin before replying;
“And a small garden would be okay, there is a fairly nice sized stream in the valley. Know how to grow things?”
“Not really! I bought a book on one to help though.”
“Hmm, what were you thinking of growing?”
“Some vegetables like tomatoes, onions, garlic. Try for a fruit tree or two. I was thinking we’d go around and gather up some plants that grew wild about Ayr and put those in too.”
“That should work. Though we’ll have to trade for most of them.”
“I’m fine with that.” She smiled, “We can hunt down some of the harder to get animals for trade goods, which I’m sure you’ll enjoy.”
“I will. Now that we’re talking about this, it doesn’t seem too bad. I’ll still be wandering about and hunting, but instead of a camp I have a house to return too.”
Kadryn just smiled, she was happy Kirosh was coming around and knew that it wouldn’t be too bad.
“Ah,” he said as he paused and looked around, “we’re getting near!” Kadryn had no idea how he kept track of where they were or how he remembered all the little landmarks and random things. To her, it looked similar to all the rest of Ayr!
He led her down into a misted valley, in the distance she could hear the bubbling of the stream. After a few minutes of heading down, the mist started to lessen and the wind grew softer. All around small trees and greenery began to spring up.
“This is a deep valley,” she noted, “It’s nice that it keeps the wind out, I’m not sure I could sleep all the time with the wind howling.”
“That and the water are one reason I picked this spot.” Kirosh said I’ll show you several spots that I liked. One of my friends is a Gaili, so he can always carve us a house in the valley wall if we need too.”
She nodded in acknowledgement as she looked around. It was a nice valley, there was grass and quite a bit of bushes and trees now.
“There’s going to be quite a bit of wild animals… Good thing the Hastars and Leirs are trained to guard,” she remarked dryly, “Otherwise I’m sure we’ll lose a lot of the animals we bring here.”
Kirosh chuckled. “Leirs will do nicely for keeping away the pests! Though I’m thinking of trying to tame one of the larger animals as a guard. Having multiple would be nice.”
“You just want a Rajsha or Arrical!” Kadryn laughed.
“Well, that would be nice yes.” He drawled, “Though having multiple guards is still a good idea! Especially when we have to leave the house to go trade or hunt.”
For the next two days, they wandered over the valley, checking out places where a house could fit, near enough the water to be able to access it, but far enough away no not have to worry about flooding. They also cleared out and checked for ay dens of animals. There weren’t any occupied right now, but they filled them in just in case.
Other than that, they enjoyed a relaxing few days of rest and fun as they waited for Kirosh’s friends to find them.
When they finally arrived, it was to see Kadryn and Kirosh sitting by the stream and not really fishing. The fishing pole was there, but it was obvious the bait had been eaten and neither of them had replaced it. Instead, Kirosh was laying with his head in Kadryn’s lap as they talked. He waved lazily to the small group of Dovaa and Oblivionites as they approached. There was one Gaili, quite obvious by his huge curled horns and stone like scales, one Ysali with pale green hair and tattoos of vines mixing with his green scales and one Peisio Dovaa with a teal coloration and long flowing hair and horns. The two Oblivionites looked to be archers like Kirosh. One grinned and shook his head.
“You look absolutely lazy right now Kirosh.”
“Is cause I am.” Kirosh responded with a lazy grin. “Been doing nothing but laze about the last few days. This is Kadryn. Guys; introduce yourselves.”
“Milan’s my name,” the first one to speak said, “Pelorn is my brother here. Nemish is the Ysali, Orlon the Gaili and Zares the Peisio.”
“Nice to me you,” Kadryn said with a smile, “I’d get up and shake your hands but lazy butt here refuses to budge.”
“It’s comfy here.”
Orlon shook his head. “Never thought you’d settle down. But seeing you now, guess it’s true.” He turned and looked at Kadryn. “You’ve gotta be a keeper if you managed to get him even thinking about settling.”
Kirosh glared at him, “I am perfectly able to settle down whenever I want.”
“Ha.” Kadryn said, “You almost freaked when I asked you if you wanted a family! Settle down whenever indeed!” She bopped him on the nose, grinning.
The others chuckled while Kirosh muttered things under his breath.
“So. House.” Pelorn said. “I can build it for you… well. Direct Orlon and Nemish to build it than we can help make furniture.” He said abruptly, an eager gleam in his eye. “No one in the Tribe likes houses so I don’t get to build them often!”
Kirosh sat up with a sigh and motioned for them to sit down. “Here’s what we want and here’s what’s in this valley.” He said, the next hour they all discussed various ways of doing it and the pros and cons of the sites. Kadryn left them to go and make lunch, much to their delight as bachelors that they were none of them were excellent cooks.
By night fall they had an idea for what they wanted. The next day they set about building it.
“Ah, the joys of Galis,” Kirosh said with a grin as Orlon flattened the ground and used his powers to craft seamless walls. Zares was busy making a well, knowing that ground water was cleaner than the stream. Pelorn and Milan were working with Kirosh and Nemish to carve furniture. Kadryn was on standby as she had absolutely no skill in building. Instead she fished and made snacks for them, as well as clearing an area by hand for the garden and transplanting some root vegetables she’d found in the upper end of the valley.
The house was larger than they’d planned on, the first floor held a family room with an arch way leading into a half kitchen half dining room on one end and a hallway on the other. The hallway had three rooms; storage and two bedrooms for guests or children. At the back were stairs leading to the second floor, which had a peaked ceiling. There was her and Kirosh’s room and study.
The rough basic furniture was placed inside before Orlon put in the last wall. With a sigh they all sat around the new table to relax for a bit.
“Well, the basics are there. Now you just have to fill it up.” Milan said.
“I have a stash of rugs and bedding that I had sent over to the Ayralan tribe from the Aiskalan one. Should be there.” Kirosh said.
“My uncle said he’d come here with the gifts from my family,” Kadryn said. “Mostly my cooking gear and whatever Ma thinks we need.”
Milan shook his head, “Lucky you, Kirosh, for finding the one girl who's family supports her choice.” He said with some jealousy. Kadryn looked questioningly at him. “I was courting an Orderite girl a few years back. Her parents didn’t agree and she left me rather than face banishment or being disowned by her family.” He said with a shrug. Pelorn patted his brother on the back.
Orlon changed the topic, in a very obvious ‘let’s not talk about that’ way. “The Tribe wants to set up a smithy here if you don’t mind. The mist keeps rusting and hurting their metal items so once a smith is found, would you mind having them live near you?”
“Sure,” Kadryn and Kirosh both said. She smiled and motioned for him to continue. “Having a neighbor would be nice. Plus it means extra security.”
"My younger brother Fallon is training to be a smith." Kadryn said, "I'm sure he'd love to come out and stay here for a while."
“Tomorrow, I’ll show you some gardening tricks and go over some plants and what you need to do with them,” Nemish said in his soft voice. “And some of the animals.”
“We’ll come back and build the barn once you have animals.” Orlon said. Kirosh nodded.
“I should have enough set by to pay for some. What about you Kadryn?”
“I know some farmers, I can probably get a good price and I’ve got some Dragon Orbs I can trade.”
“Good. Looks like you two are set for a while.” Oron said with a smile, “I’ll send my sister to you to help make the walls look a bit prettier than the bland ones I threw up.”
“Thank you,” Kadryn said with a smile. “When you do, you should all come back cause by then I’ll have my cooking supplies and can make you a feast as thanks!”
