Howl hated being ignored. He was the greatest wizard in all Ingary. He was the greatest wizard anywhere. Sophie even said so, and she never complimented him. The horrible, heartless wizard Howl hated being ignored.
He was handsome, he was perfect. He was god's gift to girls. Obviously.

Sure he was dishonest. Sure he had flaws. That should have been enough for those people. Why was he being ignored? Why didn't Lance like him? He hadn't done anything wrong. Well, not much. Unless you counted going on a date with Lance's girlfriend. It hadn't even been a real date. Just a practice one. To practice for a real one with Sophie. Sophie was the one who was important. Even though Kali was beautiful, she wasn't as beautiful as Sophie was. Sophie's beauty surpassed all others. At least in Howl's opinion. With her strangely starlight colored hair and mysteriously brown eyes, the wizard found her as irresistable as he had in Ingary.

And he was heartless.

He was heartless, and felt an attraction that could not be denied. He loved her. How was it possible? He had never been able to love without his heart before.

He loved her. Without a heart, he loved her.

Maybe a heart was a symbol of love, rather than a cause. He could only vaguely remember saving Sophie from the Witch of the Waste. Had he had a heart then?

No. No, he hadn't. He had saved her without his heart. He had cared about her enough to risk his life for her, though he was a coward, and couldn't see himself doing the same thing now.

He could love without a heart.

He loved her.

Howl was a perfect gentleman--a boy who simply was not interested in having sex and a movie. Even if he had been interested, he wouldn't have known the first thing about how to go about it. Although he hated anyone to know it, he was quite innocent in many things. Ladies were for courting with songs and poems and the wonder of your clothing and the sheen of one's hair, not for doing things like that with.

After all, he was from a children's book.

In many ways, Howl was still a child, despite having grown seemingly overnight. He simply did not possess the mind of the average teenage boy. A large gap in his memory was still missing--a rather important gap, at least, when it came to reproducing. Oh, he could do kissing; he fancied himself to be quite an expert at it. Certainly, he was Gaia's greatest when it came to snuggling, and hand holding went without saying.

Things beyond that were--well, beyond Howl. He did not think of them, for he knew nothing of them. He knew he had a son, he just didn't know how Morgan had come into existance. Which might have appeared bothersome--if the teenager had remembered that he had forgotten something. And though remembering that he had forgotten something would have made his story much easier (and less interesting), the teenage wizard did not.

He was positively oblivious. Happily so, even. His magic, like his height, had returned to him in the night. No more would he struggle to perform spells he had been able to do in Ingary. No more would he have to relearn things from books. No longer would he stumble over words when courting the ladies. He knew what to say, and when to say it. He knew when to remain silent and act mysterious, and when to compliment a woman's looks. He knew precisely the way to look at a girl; whether they were single or not. He knew how to look interested about something when he was being bored.

Despite everything that had come back to him, however, Howl did not feel entirely complete. Perhaps it was that he was two inches shorter than he would have been as a thirty year old man. Perhaps it was that he was thinner than he ever remembered being. Perhaps it was because he had not yet regained his sophisticated air. Or maybe it was something different all together.

(To be continued--Thali just didn't want to forget to save.)

Disiplinary Measures

Howl's behavior has changed drastically. His principal and several of his teachers are concerned.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:28 am

Howl was trying and failing to write neatly. He was bent over his desk, an expression of absolute determination on his face. One didn't have to be a wizard--or a genius to realize he was writing a love letter. What else would the great wizard Howl be working on so dilligently? The letter seemed to be asking questions; though if one read between the lines, one might have realized the wizard meant far more than what he was saying.

He paused from his writing for only a brief moment, to study a small, square, velvet covered box. He had gone through this process before--infact, with the very same person he was writing to.

Dear Sophie,

You see, there's this fairly important holiday for couples coming up in Febuary, and I was wondering if we could spend it together. It wouldn't be nearly as fun if we had to spend it alone; and I have missed spending as much time with you as I feel I should.

I have a present for you. I do hope you'll like it. Calcifer said that you would when I showed it to him. Of course, he said he would have given you something far better--

There was another pause, in which Howl took the box and opened it. Inside was not gold, but a silver ring. Two stands of beautiful silver enbedded with diamonds twined together. A larger stone had been carefully set in the center. The silver's intricate design spoke of a master's work. It was clear that Howl, though he claimed to be greedy, believed Sophie to be worth more than any amount of Gaian gold.

If we do meet up, Sophie dear, Valentines Day might be a good time to--you know. Ask Calcifer how to get my heart back. Hearts are often a symbol of the holiday, and I thought--well, it would be rather romantic, wouldn't it?

Another pause. The wizard dripped his quill into his ink bottle and snapped the small, velvet covered box shut. He wasn't sure Sophie would like the ring, even. His wife had always preferred the simple things. Perhaps he would do better with a ring with less complexities? Perhaps a ring with just one diamond, rather than the many the one he had already purchased bore. No matter; if worse came to worse, and Sophie did not like the ring, he would simply transform it and give it to her again.

Quill hit paper, and the wizard began to write with a renewed vigor.

I have an important question to ask you when we meet up, and I do hope you will say yes. You see, the question is quite important to our futures. The answer to said question is even more so. When I get to asking you that question, you should say yes. Our happily ever after depends on it, you see. If you are to say no, we cannot possibly live to have a happily ever after; or at least, I won't.

You may, however. Please say yes? Please, please, please say yes?

Please?

I suppose you can't say yes if you don't know what the question I'm going to ask you is. Unfortunately for you (and perhaps me) I am not going to tell you. You will have to guess until then. I think you will be able to guess the question I have for you; you being the clever, nosy witch I married. And will marry again, of course.

In case anyone but you happens to get their hands on this letter, I hope that Adrian knows I hold him in the highest form of admiration.

Lie.

I needn't go on about how much I admire him, for surely it is clear to him that I do.

Lie. Lie. Lie.

As long as he doesn't plan to make me one of his meals; which I am sure, are well refined and--not at all unrespectable like myself. I daresay he would find me rather tasteless. Assure him of that, won't you Sophie?

I have good news for you, as well. Calcifer's been dropping more hints. It seems Morgan will soon be joining us. If that witch of a--no offense darling, I should say Witch of a girl even attempts to get her hands on him, she'll find herself a warty, speckled toad. Or perhaps something even more disgusting. Do you have any suggestions on how to rid Gaia of that trouble maker? Honestly, I ask about Morgan and she goes deaf. You'd think I'd asked about the end of the world or something.

No matter. I have decided; as soon as Morgan as returned to us, that girl, and her entire family (except Jaella, I'm rather fond of the girl), are being turned into toads. On that note, I think it is time for me to say goodnight. If all goes well, this letter will come to you in the morning.

I love you,

Howl

Howl was determined that every girl he knew got something for Valentines day, so he was starting early. He knew quite a few girls, and didn't want even one of them to go without some kind of Valentine card, gift, or letter. The teenager had swept his black hair behind his ears and was bent over his desk, writing quickly. The letter he was working on was for a good friend of his; Kali. She would undoubtedly receive gifts and all kinds of things from Lance, but Howl wanted to tease her anyway.

After all, what fun was Valentines Day without some romantic pranks?

Dear Kali,

Yesterday, today and tomorrow hold no meaning when it comes to magic. I loved you then, I love you now, and I will love you. I will love you for always; whether or not Lance decides to kill me tomorrow, or you come murder me with a flower pot later this evening. Point given, I will love you until the day I die. I suggest not having Lance read this, or I will end up dying sooner than I would like.

Sometimes love grows, and sometimes love dies. Sometimes it fades altogether, but not my love for you. Never will it fade; never will my love die. No matter how long you and Lance make me wait, no matter how old I get--though I assure you that I will never become gray haired or wrinkled--my love will be there for you.

Remember Kali, I am a wizard who gets what he wants. I know what I want, but more importantly, I know what I will want, for the rest of my life. Love is patient, Kali, and--well. I'm not very patient, as you know, but I will wait for you. Even if my love goes unnoticed for all eternity, I will always love you.

Unfortunately for you, you aren't the one I want; or will want, for that matter. My heart belongs--quite literally, to Sophie. Did you enjoy my letter? Oh Kali, if you fell for it... You know I think of you as an older sister, don't you? Did it bother you? Please don't have Lance read this letter, Kali. I would really prefer not to die. I have a wife and family, you know. Anyway, happy Valentines Day! I hope this reminded you that you are loved--and not just by Lance.

Love you sister,

Howl

The wizard folded up the letter and placed it in an envelope. He closed it and placed a heart shaped sticker to close it. With a wave of the hand, the envelope addressed itself and took off. Yes, he was sure Kali would enjoy the letter he'd written her; after she raged and plotted on killing him.

Howl was busily writing another letter to Sophie; she seemed to be his focus lately. He was absolutely determined to make sure she knew he loved her--or perhaps it was the other way around, and he was convincing himself that he loved her. It was almost Febuary after all; almost Valentines. The most important romantic day of the year with the exception of anniverseries.

Howl had decided his and Sophie's would happen on May first, if all went well. They would get married on May first in honor of the day they had met--as long as Sophie agreed to the date--and accepted his proposal, naturally.

The cowardly wizard still worried that his wife would reject it entirely; perhaps Adrian had tricked her? Perhaps the evil, vile vampire that was her guardian would force her to refuse the proposal? No matter, Howl was determined to woo and win his wife over. And he would do so. Quite grandly.

Dear Sophie,

People say that love hurts, but the only pain I'm feeling is the pain of not being with you. When I'm with you, there are no clouds, even on the darkest of days. The hours I spend with you are enchanted--quite literally.

Your beauty has always outshone those around you, but now even more so. If I were to wish for the most beautiful woman on Gaia, you would undoubtedly appear in my room. Words cannot describe how I feel about you; at least, none in English.

You are my sun; my beautiful, nosy, constantly cleaning Sophie. No light can match the sun's radiance, no matter how hard they try. You are my sun. The most dazzling star in the sky. The light that makes everything look better. The light that when let in, reveals the dust in the air. It reveals flaws, and then compliments them.

If you reply to this letter saying which flaws you have, I will not hesitate to remind you that together, we are perfect. Apart, we are terribly flawed, like a puzzle that is missing pieces. We fit each other perfectly; as if we were made for each other. Maybe we were. If that is in fact that case, all the more reason for me to marvel at my wonderful, beautiful, opinionated wife.

I still wonder at the transformation you went through before we were married. When we first met, you were so timid--my little gray mouse. As soon as you came to my castle, you became a fierce cleaning lady. And even after that, you became someone I fell for quite willingly.

Continuing my previous thoughts, if you are the sun, I am the sea. Unpredictable, dangerous and beautiful. Cunning and constantly moving. In my current state, Sophie love, I may not be the most devoted; but I assure you that I will always be yours. Just as the sun always rests on the waves as it sets.

I love you,

Howl

Letter to Liesel
Fairest Liesel,

Princess of my heart, my dear Liesel, I reserve my deepest affections for you. Your hair is like soft gold, your eyes like the rarest sapphires. Dear princess; if only I were a prince--and younger! Your beauty would have undoubtedly charmed me. Your intelligence and sheer boldness--declaring my love for you, however, is not the purpose of my letter. Valentines Day is coming up; I don’t know whether you would have celebrated it in your world or not. It is a day when men strive to make sure women feel loved. Oh, ignore the pink and the hearts if you aren’t fond of that sort of thing.

You are wonderfully brave and independent; like my Sophie. Though I only met you briefly Princess, your intelligence was obvious. Your prince will soon come; and you will undoubtedly brave things that are currently unimaginable. Believe in happily ever afters, but not in peace. Happily ever after isn’t a promise that there will not be troubles. Honestly, I doubt someone could be happy if they didn’t have some kind of adventure together.

I look forward to yours, little Princess. I have already had many of my own, of course. Love is the greatest of all--the adventure never ends. The excitement is beyond defeating a Witch or fighting a djinn; even more so than finding a long lost treasure.

So as you embark on your journey towards your happily ever after, stay strong. You are loved. In this world, people like us are rare; we believe in happily ever afters. We’ve seen them happen. We’ve had our own. Keep believing, Liesel.

Shine your light for all, and soon a prince will see your heart for the treasure it is. Treasure it always, Princess. Don’t give it to just anyone. Protect it, and avoid falling stars. If you do end up meeting one, inform me immediately. It’s extremely important, little Princess. I shan’t let you be hurt. By Witch, demon, or even star.

Your Royal Wizard,

Howl

Letter to Demi
Dearest Demi,

With the understanding that you may not be able to read this, I write confessing my love for you. They often say that a kiss can tell you a lot about a person, Princess. It gave me the answers I was seeking.

You little princess, though graced with a single kiss from my lips, are under a spell. I could not remove it. Perhaps the spark of magic that passed through us, wonderful though it was, simply was not what you needed. Perhaps if I were a prince, I could break your enchantment and then you would be able to grace everyone by allowing them to view your beautiful eyes. There is no doubt in my mind that you will soon find the one meant to break the spell.

He may have to fight dragons, travel through thorns and face enchantments, but nothing will be able to keep him from you. Not if he’s the one who will break that spell. Only that man, that boy, is worthy of winning your heart, Princess. So you see, even though I would love to have your presence light up my life--I have already found my queen and am currently working on rebuilding our castle.

You and I are unique, Princess. We can be certain of our futures; and though we do not live according to a script, we know naturally what our futures hold. We don’t have to worry about whether or not we will have a happily ever after. We know our stories.

So the only advice I can really give you is to be patient. Sleeping Beauty slept one hundred years waiting for her prince to come. It’s my experience, Princess, that Witches only curse those they are jealous of. Never doubt your beauty. Never doubt that you are loved.

Your loving Royal Wizard,

Howl
