Kali's bright red hair stood out against the snow, as did her bright green jacket, and black pants. The black stood out particularily well; black always stood out against the snow.
Unfortunately, Luka didn't seem to want to follow this rule.
She had somehow been suckered into bringing him to the park. She really wasn't sure how. Something about eyes...
Whatever.
The problem now was that Luka was missing. She didn't understand how! He was black. Pitch black, with bright green eyes. He should have been the easiest thing to SEE in the park, aside from her.
Unbeknownst to Kali, Luka was invisible because he was not there. He was across the hill, behind some trees, and watching a fascinating ritual happening between a bunch of humans. One would lift snow in his hands, pack it down, and throw it as hard as he could against another one. They looked like they were having fun!
But what, he wondered, was this called...?

Moving quickly like a ninja--er, wizard, Howl darted out from behind the tree he had used as a haven. He was bundled up in warm though fancy clothing; naturally. His jacket had buttons of bronze today.
He threw a snowball in Kali's direction before darting back behind the tree. This would be fun. He had promised his apprentice a lesson; and perhaps she would still get one. Maybe he would teach her to make flavored snowballs.
Puff was following a wobbling Leyla; who in turn, was being supervised by Vate. "Pu pu!" he called, making a sound that suspiciously like giggling as vapor came from his breath.
He loved winter.

"Luka! Where aaare you? Come on, Luka, I'm CO-"
PAK.
Kali ducked forward as something very, very cold hit her in the back of her head, slowly sliding down her neck. She shrieked and swiped it away, whirling with eyes that swore death for whoever had done that. She caught sight of a whip of blonde hair disappearing behind a tree, and had to wrack her brain to think of who that could be. Katia? No, she was at home, practicing for her dance recital. Besides, her hair was longer, and whiter than that. That blonde had been pretty...golden.
And she only knew one person with pretty golden hair. Pretty, golden, shiny; it was enough to make anyone vain.
So Howl was hiding behind a tree.
He'd regret that.
Huffing, she crouched, scooping snow up and packing it into a ball. She examined it loftily, making sure it had no rocks in it. Then, she made another, and another. All the while she kept an eye on the tree; oh, if only Dimitri were here. HE would get Howl for her. But then there wouldn't be the sweet satisfaction of burying his cocky a** in snowballs and VENGEANCE.
She was so petty. But it was so fun.
Beaming, almost cruelly, the snoballs she had made each flared to life, wiggling and hovering into the air. The spell she used when she was too lazy to cross the room and grab something; she was pretty positive it worked to SEND things elsewhere, too.
She would just have to wait until she got a clear view of him.
Luka heard Kali shriek and turned, zipping back to where he had been. What was up with her? And what was she doing?
He trilled in delight as he saw that SHE was participating in the strange snow ritual as well, and with none other than Howl. He beamed and waved at the wizard, looking around. If Howl was here, surely Puff was too.
"Lu? Lu~!" He smiled when he spotted the other shadow, zipping over to stumble to a stop in front of him.
"Lu!"

Howl snickered from behind his tree, clearly he thought Kali would never catch him. He darted forward, having quickly made a snowball. He prepared to throw it at his apprentice when he spotted the snowballs in front of her. He gulped and quickly muttered a spell.
A wall of snow appeared in front of him. Who knew what snow could do to one's good looks, after all? It might have made his face all red and his nose runny. There was a flaw in his defensive plan, however. There were no walls to the sides of him. "Kali," his voice was still hitting pitches he had once thought impossible. "You're cheating."
Puff looked over at Luka for a moment, before picking up a snowball. He looked around to make sure no one was watching before throwing it at his fellow shadow. "Pu pu!" the shadow giggled. "Pu pu uff!"

"All's fair in love and war, Howl." Kali grinned, twitching her fingers. The snowballs whirled, zipping around to either side of the wall, hovering for about half a second. Then, they flew at Howl. Kali was positively gleeful as she waited for the PAK and the inevitable whining. Oh, but it would be worth it. Vengeance was sweet.
Luka fell back as the snowball hit him, and he laughed, wigglling in the snow until he managed to get a handful of it. Giggling, he threw it at Puff, darted into the air, and flew away. This was great! He could play too!

"Kali!" Howl wailed. She was definitely cheating; he didn't know that spell. And now he was cold and wet. "What spell are you using?" he demanded, moving out from behind the wall he'd made. "Temporary truce?" he asked hopefully, waving a white flag he'd summoned. "Have you seen my dad?" he asked, glancing around. "I brought someone I wanted you to meet."
He was sure Kali was one of those types who adored children.
Puff attempted to catch the snow in his mouth, and giggled. He seemed oblivious to Luka's flight; until he noticed his friend wasn't in front of him. "Uff?" he asked, forming a snowball. "Pu pu!" No fair! He couldn't fly yet!

|"It's a summoning spell, mixed with a levitation spell. I use it to bring things to me from across the room. I just had to tweak it a bit to make it send things at someone else." She grinned, quite like the cheshire cat. "Why? Don't you know it?" She giggled. Yes, she knew teasing Howl wasn't nice, exactly...but she also didn't much care.
"Oh, did you? Who did you bring?" She blinked. looking around. She didn't see anyone else. Not even Puff. Where was Howl's little shadow?
Luka turned mid-air, cocking his head to the side. Then he remembered that normal Shadows couldn't fly. Him, Kouki, and Cain could, but Puff couldn't. Which wasn't fair...but Luka never walked. so while he knew the polite thing would be to stop flying, he didn't. Instead, he zipped over and tackled Puff, snuggling him into the snow and laughing again.

Howl crossed his arms. He was certain he had known that very spell at one point. She wasn't being very nice, was she? "I was going to teach you a spell," he muttered under his breath. "I brought my younger sister," he added, pointing a ways away; in the field. "Leyla, you know. She's not a wi--she's not a mage, though."
In the direction the wizard had pointed, two forms were attempting (and failing) to build a snowman. It was clear neither of them had done this before.
"Pu!" Puff gave a delighted trill, cuddling Luka. His wings did seem workable--though the dragon shadow wasn't sure how to use them. He patted snow on top of Luka and giggled.

Luka shook the snow off himself and cocked his head to the side. Puff had wings. So why couldn't he fly?
"Lu?" He asked, leaning over and poking one. "Ja?"
"You have a sister?" Kali had been completely oblivious to this. She forgot all about Howl's mutter, which she had been intending to demand that he voice louder, when she spotted the adorable little girl.
"Oh, she's adorabl- what are they trying to do?" Really, it looked like they were attacking a pile of snow. Was that some...weird, elf tradition?

"Several really," Howl admitted. "This one's the only one that lives with me, though. The others live with mom. Don't know how that's going to work out though, since she acts like Tiger Woods. Haven't actually seen her in months." He looked wistful for a moment before shaking his head.
"Hm? Oh, they're making a snowman. Dad's never made one before. Want to help them?" he asked. "After, I'll take you to get hot chocolate. I have something I want to teach you, too."

Tiger woods, she wondered, raising an eyebrow. He was an enormous cheating whore.
So...what did that make Howl's mother?
Really, she couldn't imagine anyone cheating on Vate; he seemed nice, if a bit prone to jerkish jokes, and he wasn't bad looking. And she wasn't about to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. She didn't even know Stasia, but she didn't approve of cheating in the slightest. For a moment, her eyes went dark, but the sparkle in them quickly returned as she laughed at the dismal example of a snowman that Vate and Leyla were currently constructing.
"Well someone has to show them how it's done, don't you think? Let's go give them a lesson in snowman building." She giggled. She knew very well that being taken out for hot chocolate by Howl meant that she would have to pay for it, in some round about way. But that was alright. She supposed she owed him for bombarding him with snowballs.

Howl didn't seem the least bit bothered about having insulted his mother. He beamed at Kali and nodded. "Right," he said, offering her his mittened hand. "Dad really sucks at it." He smirked, and studied her for a moment. "No magic?" he challenged. "I bet I could make a better one."
And naturally, he would find some loophole in the rule he had just made.
Puff flapped his wings gently, tilting his head at Luka. "Pu?" he asked, craning his neck to get a good look at his wings. He shook his head. "Uff." No, he couldn't fly. He wanted to; he wanted to fly like Luka. Then they could play all sorts of cames. "Pupu..." The tiny dragon-like shadow pouted. It wasn't fair!

"Fine." Kali agreed, grinning at Howl. "But no loopholes either, Howl." She poked him on the nose before taking his hand, following him over to Vate and Leyla.
"Ja, lu." Luka turned, pointing at his own wings. He waited until he was sure that Puff was looking to flutter them, lifting himself a few inches above the snow. Couldn't Puff see? That was how they worked. He turned his head, smiled, and landed before fluttering again. Just like that. It wasn't hard!

Howl crossed his arms and pouted. "That's not fair," he started, before regaining composure. "Of course not," he said, giving Kali his sunniest smile. "That would be cheating." Of course, the great wizard Howl would never cheat. It ruined the fun of winning honestly--or did it?
"Howl's got a new girlfriend?" Leyla observed, studying Kali. "She's pretty." Howl sighed. He had almost forgotten how well Leyla spoke. The infant left the pile of snow she and her father had been attempting to fashion into a snowman and wobbled over Kali. She hugged her around her knees. "I like you. You belong to Leyla."
Puff attempted to mimic Luka, pushing himself off of the ground and flapping his wings. He ended up floating for a brief moment before falling onto his backside. "Uff!" The shadow said as he fell into the snow. "Pupu," he added in what sounded like a suspiciously whiny tone.
Someone had been spending too much time with their host.

"You're cute, Howl." Kali grinned, though it quickly went away when the little girl, Leyla, suggested she was Howl's girlfriend.
"No, Leyla, I'm not Howl's girlfriend. But I /am/ pretty." she giggled, adoring the cute little girl. She didn't quite understand what belonging to Leyla entailed, but that was alright. She was only, like, three. How big of a threat could she be?
"Howl and I came to build snow men with you." She giggled. "Is that okay?"
Luka frowned, cocking his head to the side.
"Lu." He gave Puff a very uncaring Kali-like look, pointing at the sky. He should try again. And no whining; it wasn't hard, so it wasn't like he would never be able to do it.
"Ja, ka." He tugged at Puff, fluttering his wings again.
"U-up." He struggled with the one syllable word, one that Katia had managed to teach him. "Up!"
